t may not have been a typical school day, but thousands of Abbotsford Senior and Collegiate alumni packed their alma mater Saturday to pay tribute to their old stomping grounds.

Students and staff, past and present, gathered at an open house at Abbotsford Collegiate, formerly Abbotsford Senior, to prowl the home of the Panthers one last time.

The remains of the 51-year-old school will be torn down to make way for a newly constructed $45-million facility set to open in the fall.

Principal Lance McDonald, who is a 1985 Abby Senior graduate, said as many as 3,000 visitors

gathered to catch up with classmates or teachers, purchase and view school memorabilia, and pour over grad photos and yearbooks.

“There have been so many graduation classes here that it made sense that many people wanted to walk the halls one last time,” said McDonald.

“It was exciting . . . the visual of young and old, and seeing people showing their own children or grandchildren where they went to school.”

It wasn’t only parents and children sharing memories but couples too, said McDonald.

“A lot of high school sweethearts met at Abby,” he said.

Former students who took part in alumni basketball, football and rugby games had one last time to run the fields or play in the school gym, known affectionately as the “The Pit.”

“We had ages right from the old timers to young bucks,” said McDonald.

The day ended with a traditional school dance in The Pit, which saw 400 people, young and old, attend the sold-out affair.

“There were 70-year-olds and people in their 20s, all reminiscing about their years at Abby,” said McDonald.

The new school, which will house a new public library and act as a hub for the community, opens its doors in September, 2012. The new facility will be built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold standards, featuring water efficiency and energy conservation systems and recycled or renewable materials.

esidents of Bradner, the self-proclaimed ‘Daffodil Capital of Canada,’ will have to decide if they want to hang on to their bucolic country community, or welcome an industrial complex that proponents say will bring $4.5 billion in “economic benefits” to the region.

The proposal is to remove 275 acres of farmland from the Agricultural Land Reserve to accommodate a 125-acre logistics park and possibly a new access to the freeway at Lefeuvre Road.

To date, 22 properties up for exclusion from the ALR were listed in ads that ran in the Abbotsford-Mission Times on May 17 and 24, but a map indicates that another 12 properties could be absorbed by the project if it went ahead.

The site would extend the 700-acre Gloucester Industrial Estates, which reaches east from 264th Street to the Langley-Abbotsford border and south from 56th Avenue or Roberts Road, along Lefeuvre Road to the TransCanada Highway.

The film titled Operation X includes the experiences and heartbreak of the family and friends of victims who died after ingesting the street drug.

The APD decided to make the video following a series of fatalities in Abbotsford and the Lower Mainland due to the drug, including the deaths of Abbotsford residents 17-year-old Cheryl McCormack and Tyler Miller, 20.

Bee queen stung by ‘macropodid’ M

ignon Tsai, Abbotsford’s queen of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, was eliminated in the semi-finals on Thursday.

The 12-year-old Chief Dan George student aced a set of difficult words in the famous spelling contest finals before being eliminated.

Braving national TV cameras, Tsai nailed words such as ‘hyacinth’, ‘leegte’ and ‘oxyacetylene’ before falling prey to the word ‘macropodid’, a member of the family Macropodidae, which includes kangaroos and wallabies.

The other Canadian to make to the semi-finals, Jennifer Mong of St. John’s, N.L., was eliminated in the following round after tripping up on the word ‘vellon’.

Tsai was among the 50 competitors to make it into the semifinals following two days of tense competition that saw the Scripps’ officials challenge the students with increasingly difficult words.

In the end, the contest winner was 14-year-old Snigdha Nandipati, a Grade 8 student from Francis Parker School, San Diego, Calif.

She walked away with a $30,000 cash prize and an engraved trophy from Scripps, a $2,500 U.S. savings bond, a complete reference library from Merriam-Webster and a $5,000 scholarship from Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation.

Canadians have had a strong presence at the international competition over the years, including Tsai’s older sister, Grace, who participated in the Scripps bee in 2008.

Students not just from the U.S. and Canada, but also from the Bahamas, China, Ghana, Jamaica, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea competed at the prestigious competition this year.

Developer claims 4,750 jobs are possible ALR, from page A1 development firm specializing in industrial and commercial projects, is leading the proposal. In a May 17 letter to the Bradner Community Club its president, Ron Emerson, wrote that the industrial enclave is expected to “produce in the range of 4,750 jobs and approximately $4.5 billion in economic benefit to the City of Abbotsford and the region.”

The north end of the development would accommodate a 125-acre “logistics park” to be served by Southern Rail of B.C. Land south of the park to Townshipline Road would accommodate smaller industrial uses, while land from Townshipline to the freeway would be “higher end industrial with a higher percentage of office space,” wrote Emerson.

But many Bradner residents will oppose the plan because it would remove viable farmland from the ALR, said Pat Brady, who lives on 56th Avenue.

“It’s certainly against the spirit of the Agricultural Land Reserve Act . . . which is to preserve farmland, and this is clearly farmland,” Brady said. “Our family has been on this property since the 1930s and during that time, this area has been used for farming.

Any attempt to take it out of the ALR should be denied.”

Ultimately, residents will have to decide if they want the area to be “The Daffodil Capital of Canada or The Warehouse Capital of Canada,” Lynda Richard wrote in a recent edition of the local newsletter, the Bradner Barker.

The farming families don’t want to see any more truck and commuter traffic on the

already over-taxed, narrow country roads, or the noise and hazards that are part of it, she said in a phone interview. The proposal may include freeway access at Lefeuvre Road or at 272nd Street, she noted.

There is also a fear the “industrialization” will erode the closely-knit rural community and its lifestyle.

“One concern is Bradner Elementary. Enrolment keeps dropping and these industrial owners won’t be sending kids to the school; they won’t be a part of the community,” Richard said.

The 100-year-old farming neighbourhood fought off a similar proposal in 2004, when the City of Abbotsford wanted to include the area in its City in the Country farmland exemption plan, but pulled it out due to public opposition. “We put up quite a stink back then,” Richard said.

Notices regarding the current proposal say people must submit written comments by June 7, but the city will take comments well beyond that date, said Abbotsford’s economic development general manager, Jay Teichroeb.

Abbotsford just received the proposal as one comprehensive application and city planners have yet to review it, he said Monday.

City planners will compile a report for the council, then hold public consultation meetings into the summer and fall before the council decides whether or not to support the plan, said Teichroeb. It would go to the Agriculture Land Commission after that.

I

f you’re injured in a car crash, caused by the fault of another, you could suffer many losses. One loss may be work-related – you may be forced to find an easier but lower-paying job and be unable to earn as much income as before the accident. Lawyers call this loss “diminished earning capacity.” It’s often part of a compensation claim by personal injury plaintiffs.

But what if your earnings don’t go down after the accident? Can you still win damages for “diminished earning capacity”? After all, you might think that because your income didn’t decrease, your ability to earn hasn’t been diminished. Not true.

A recent BC case illustrates that this approach is too simplistic and can be unfair to the injured person.

The plaintiff (Colleen), 46, was injured in two car accidents (one right after the other). She hurt her neck, shoulder and upper back, resulting in chronic widespread pain later diagnosed as fibromyalgia. Before the accidents, she was a highly energetic and motivated individual. She had a fast-paced job as an executive secretary to the president of a large organization, which she loved and was ideally suited for.

All that changed. Because of her chronic pain – which was only controlled or made endurable by large amounts of pain killers and antiinflammatory medications – she could no longer handle the demands of her job, nor the three-hour (both ways) commute it involved.

Colleen sold her house to move to a smaller home with fewer stairs. Because of her injuries, she also found a new, less demanding job that only involved a 20-minute commute. Having to switch jobs “was a huge blow” and it “was far less rewarding in terms of job satisfaction,” said

Still, her lawyers were able to prove that she suffered a reduction in her capacity to earn, a finding upheld on appeal.

The circle of secretarial or administrative positions that she could compete for in future had narrowed because of the limitations imposed by her injuries. In short, she became less marketable as an employee and less capable overall of taking advantage of all employment opportunities that might come her way.

As well, the trial judge concluded that there was a real and substantial possibility that Colleen would have moved up in her organization’s hierarchy to a director position had she been able to stay there – at an increased salary and with improved health and pension benefits. (This particular finding was over-turned on appeal as speculative only, reducing her compensation award somewhat.)

And there was a real possibility that because of her injuries (which had plateaued or possibly could even worsen), her working career would likely end earlier than it would have if the accident hadn’t occurred.

Overall, she proved that she had suffered a loss in her capacity to earn future income, as confirmed by the appeal court. The BC Court of Appeal ultimately awarded Colleen $275,000 for diminished earning capacity.

Intervenor status for van Dongen

ormer Liberal MLA John van Dongen has been granted intervenor status in the application by B.C.’s auditor-general to review the controversial deal to waive the legal fees of two former Liberal aides convicted of political corruption.

B.C Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Bauman, after hearing submissions last week, granted van Dongen intervenor status in the BasiVirk indemnity review.

The judge said the Abbotsford South MLA had a unique perspective as a now Conservative MLA and former solicitor general of B.C. “My involvement as an intervenor will be to present a perspective that is a little bit different from the auditorgeneral in that – I’m a legislator representing the interest if British Columbians,” van Dongen said outside court after the ruling.

“Part of my submission as an intervenor was that I had always expressed concerns about that particular file,” he told reporters outside the Vancouver Law Courts.

Van Dongen left Premier Christy Clark’s government last March and now sits as a member of the upstart B.C. Conservative Party.

He said then when he quit the B.C. Liberal Party that there were still unanswered questions regarding the writing-off of $6 million in legal fees in the BC Rail case.

The long-running political corruption trial came to a surprise ending in October 2010 when Dave Basi and Bob Virk entered guilty pleas to breach of trust and accepting bribes for confidential information supplied to representatives of one of the bidders for the controversial BC Rail sale in 2003. The provincial government had promised not to sell BC Rail in the previous election campaign but then put the publicly-owned railway up for bids, accepting $1 billion from CN Rail.

The auditor-general has applied in court for documents in the Basi-Virk case that have not been disclosed by the government.

The matter is expected to be back in court June 18 but it could be adjourned until September.

At the time the two Liberal aides accepted bribes, Basi was the top political aide to the finance minister and Basi had the same role for the transportation minister.

Deadly number meets its day

ne hundred eighty-six thousand seems a rather inconspicuous sort of number at first glance, but it is actually a truly remarkable string of digits that has two sciency things in common. In terms of physics, it is the number of miles that light travels in a single second, and sets the upper limit of speed at which anything can travel.

In medicine, 186,000 is the number of potentially lethal cancer diagnoses expected in Canada in a single year.

There’s another number that is even more remarkable than the medically significant 186,000, and that’s 4,700,000 – the number of Canadians who still smoke cigarettes, knowing that smoking puts them in the highest risk bracket for becoming one of the 186,000.

In fact, smoking is a huge risk factor for lung cancer, which remains among the most lethal of cancers, and continues to claim more fatalities each year than any other cancer. But cigarettes are not tobacco’s only paving stones on the road to cancer. Cigars and pipes are also major factors in lung cancer, not to mention lip, tongue and throat cancers, plus a host of other cancers for which connections aren’t as readily obvious.

And it’s not just cancer – tobacco is implicated in emphysema and a host of respiratory and other lethal or debilitating illnesses. May 31 was World No Tobacco Day – a day of awareness and recognition of the part that tobacco will play in many of the 186,000 lives that will be impacted this year by a cancer diagnosis in Canada, along with millions of others throughout the world.

Quite unlike the blink-of-an-eye speed of light, the speed of tobacco-related cancers is often a relentlessly slow, laborious, and painful trek towards death.

The days and weeks following World No Tobacco Day are an opportunity for millions of smokers around the world to join with each other and move towards longer living and a healthier lifestyle.

C4D ride was a shining example T

he second annual Cycling4Diversity journey from Mission to Victoria has been successfully completed. The C4D team left May 22 and arrived into Victoria on May 25.

The four-day journey saw the team travel 200 km, visiting nine cities with 40 presentations relaying the message to thousands of people. The team was welcomed by students, government officials and the public during “Cycling4Diversity Week” in British Columbia from May 20-26.

Cycling4Diversity was created last year when I decided to form a team to spread the message that we need to not only speak about diversity but also take a look at whether we are celebrating it.

Over the last several years, I have received feedback from readers that show there are some growing issues that need to be addressed.

Many people supported the concept of C4D last year on how we delivered a message in a unique way that captured the imagination of many British Columbians.

I was encouraged to do it again this year and in the process the initiative has grown tremendously. C4D is reflected by a team of individuals who believe in the message of diversity, culture and the need to address issues regarding racism.

This year the team received eight proclamations from local

On the edge governments and the province of British Columbia.

What’s encouraging about the C4D story is that level of support was strong in all the communities we were welcomed in: Mission, Abbotsford, Langley, Surrey, New Westminster, Burnaby, Vancouver, Richmond and Victoria.

A number of students along the way asked, “How long have you all known each other?” The riders responded that many of us only met the morning of the ride.

This proves that in order to work together to accomplish something positive, people don‘t have to know one another.

There were seven core cyclists and many people who joined in on their bikes and supported the team in delivering the message.

The team that traveled to Victoria included: Vince Hartmann, Abbotsford Deputy Police Chief Rick Lucy, Abbotsford City Coun. Bill MacGregor, Sukhi Dhami, Harpreet Singh and Raj Patara.

Kulwinder Singh Dhillon also joined our group of cyclists with his motorcycle, riding the entire way. We were a small team in numbers, but with a big, powerful message.

Diversity is about working as a team, and I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to work with such fine individuals who are passionate about building a vibrant, multicultural society.

Sarina Di Martino Derksen, C4D executive coordinator, who worked extremely hard to make this second annual event a success, is already busy planning for the C4D ride next May. Her vision and commitment took it to a new level and we’re looking forward to next year. Di Martino Derksen said: “We only had a couple of short months to plan this entire ride and I’m thrilled with the success of it.

“The support from local service providers and sponsors were incredible. I was deeply moved to see how many people believed in this important message that we were honoured to carry throughout our communities.”

Behind the scenes were our incredible camera crew, who consisted of Dwayne De Sousa, co-owner of Kapish New Media Inc., Sheldon Carvalho, Netzah Garcia, owner of Simply Silly Studios and Deesh Sekhon, owner of Deesh Photography.

The C4D initiative is committed to celebrating diversity and discussing related issues throughout the year, and to building bridges of dialogue, one city at a time.

We have an army of people in this city ready to help addicts that genuinely want to stop taking drugs.

There may be a little pain up front during detox but many hundreds in our city can attest that it first real step into a brighter tomorrow.

Budgets reveal our true priorities Editor, the Times:

Abbotsford city council has $1.73 million to subsidize entertainment and sports.

Abbotsford city council has an additional $1.1 million to subsidize the

ownership of a professional hockey team.

Abbotsford city council has another $115,000 to subsidize golf plus clubhouse food and beverage services.

And Abbotsford city council has $0 to keep the Warm Zone open.

Council has $2.945 million for frivolous pursuits and $0 for saving, reclaiming and transforming lives.

A budget – spending – reflects the values and ethics of council, our city and its people. But $3 million to subsidize amusing ourselves and $0 to reach out to those in our city in desperate need of love and caring reflects a council, a city, a people who are not simply ethically challenged, but suffering a critical ethical deficit.

Not that this is the first time a city, a people, have suffered a critical ethical deficit. And . . . Abbotsford council does have its Coliseum, a group of disposable people and just down the road – the lions at the Greater Vancouver Zoo. As Alexander Solzhenitsyn said, “Even the most rational approach to ethics is defenceless if there isn’t the will to do what is right.”

Careful not to rock the ship of fools Editor, the Times:

Turning to his favourite topic (himself ) and thinking with his emotion of self-pity, Robert Rock laments his emotional sinking feeling and of how he must be on a Ship of Fools (Times. May 31). If he is truly on this ship, then what must he himself be?

With his low level thinking, Rock rails against some vague unspecified “fundamentalist thinking” but is not rational enough to quote any of it verbatim.

Instead, he indulges in a con game of stereotypes and emotionally imagines some vague, unnamed “bible thumper pulpits.”

Rock turns to a comic book picture of the supposedly “illiterate religious.”

His accusative emotions leave him incapable of thinking honestly.

With pompous emotion of snobbery, Rock bombastically smears his fellow Canadians as “fiveyear olds.”

His arbitrary number of “five” has no scientific basis and was chosen with his emotion of capriciousness.

Those bible thumpers and five-year-olds look more moderate than an accusative extremist like Rock.

I read Ms. Baker’s article (May 29, ‘Lining up to raise points on reduction’) with interest. It seems that our little city in the country has irked the well-funded pharmaceutical industry.

The harm reduction cronies have come into town to bash a few heads at the city council for the audacity of saying that “harm reduction” is bad public policy.

Indeed our city is leading the way in excellent public policy by helping people out of addiction, not through giving out free needles, but through real help such as found in recovery and treatment centers.

It costs an addict only $0.49 for a needle and only $0.29 for a replacement needle tip. These can be purchased at the local pharmacy 24 hours a day without a prescription.

The argument that a free needle exchange is vital to public health and reducing the incidence of disease is ridiculous. Addicts spend hundreds of dollars feeding their habit. It would cost them more time and money to get to a publicly funded needle exchange then it would cost to buy a clean needle at the local pharmacy.

Addiction can only be solved by dealing with the underlying issues within a person that leads them to self-medicate through drugs (legal and illegal).

RUSKIN DAM AND POWERHOUSE UPGRADE PROJECT ROAD AND RECREATION CLOSURES The British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC) has given BC Hydro the green light to proceed with upgrades to the Ruskin Powerhouse and Dam that will improve the seismic safety and reliability of the 82-year-old facility. The decision means BC Hydro may now begin construction on this important project.

To ensure the safety of the public and workers, several facilities will be closed until the project is completed in 2018. $ Hayward Street over Ruskin Dam will continue to be closed to all motor vehicles, bicycles and pedestrian traffic.

new holiday in February meant to give B.C. families a break may actually be a burden to the family business, say critics of Family Day. The new statutory holiday, to start next year on Feb. 11, was announced last week by Premier Christy Clark.

The declaration fulfills a campaign promise Clark made when she was running for the B.C. Liberal Party leadership last year.

“Having our own unique day in B.C. creates distinctive opportunities for families and local businesses. British Columbians will be able to enjoy all kinds of local attractions with fewer lineups and less out-of-town traffic,” Clark said in the announcement.

But the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce eyes the new holiday with skepticism.

“There are mixed feelings. A lot of people are anticipating a day in the bleak February period but it certainly comes with a price,” said Allan Asaph, the executive director for the ACC. The B.C. wing of the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses estimates the average cost to a small business, defined as having five or fewer employees, will be $1,135. Overall, it estimates the holiday will cost small and medium B.C. businesses $42 million in wages alone for the day.

The Chamber also takes issue

with timing of the holiday, which will be on the second Monday of February. Asaph said it would have made better business sense to align B.C.’s Family Day with similar days in Alberta and Ontario, and President’s Day in Washington state, all of which fall on the third Monday in February.

Tradex and Tourism Abbotsford executive director Dan Stefanson agrees. Tradex has 24 to 26 “sellable” weekends in the year that are suitable for consumer shows, and four of those were in February, he said.

Typically, long weekends are not very profitable because people go on vacations or stay home with family, so the trade sector avoids booking events on those dates.

“It takes another weekend out of our calendar. Every weekend in February was sellable, although the third weekend was slightly compromised [because of President’s Day in Washington]. So Family Day takes away a weekend that has been very valuable to us,” he said Friday.

He noted the Pacific Agriculture Show moved their date from February to January because they were impacted by Washington’s President’s Day. Tradex has a contract with the Fraser Valley Home Show for that weekend in 2013, he said, but that may change in the future.

Quality of life rises with temperatures

Plenty of work and reward lies ahead of us

A

s I write this article, we have just enjoyed one of the sunniest weeks of the spring, and I’m looking forward to what I hope will be a long hot summer!

You will never hear me complain about it being too hot. And while more than our share of wet weather is always going to be something we will need to put up with, along with visitors joking about our webbed feet, we do live in one of the finest places on earth.

I don’t just say that because it’s my job to spread a positive message about our city; I really believe it. I could run my business from pretty much anywhere in the Lower Mainland but my family chooses to stay here based on quality of life choices.

That leads me to what I have decided to write about this month. As we began to work on the Mayor’s Task Force for Economic Prosperity, one of the first exercises the group went through was

listing Abbotsford’s unique assets and then making a list of how we, as a community, could potentially leverage them to increase economic activity leading to more good paying jobs.

The small focus group I participated in for this exercise looked at our institutional facilities, such as the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre and the University of the Fraser Valley. As we discussed just these two facilities, it became apparent the potential was staggering in scope and surprisingly overlapped. Here are a couple of examples.

UFV has intentionally decided that one of its areas of focus is agricultural business and science in order to play to our regional strengths. One idea our small group discussed was to team up university research within a preventative health strategy from the health care perspective, potentially leading to new and improved food products our local producers and

processors could then take to market.

Another potential strategy was to find an educational curriculum niche in the health care field that UFV could teach to help the ARH become further specialized in that specific area, leading to more wellpaid, local jobs being created.

The other two focus groups worked in other areas of our city, which I hope to share on in future articles. Suffice it to say, for now, that the potential vision could positively affect the next generation and beyond.

Of course, good ideas are one thing, but getting the strategy down to the street

level through well thought out policy and incentives will be things the task force will look at in the next number of meetings.

In the meantime, I’m interested to hear from you, our members, on the economic development strategies we may employ here in Abbotsford.

I encourage you to think about the kind of jobs your children and grandkids could build a future with. What might these jobs pay? Would it be enough to support a family? How might these jobs affect the environment? What sort of made-in-Abbotsford solutions and innovations could we deliver to the world in the next 25 to 50 years?

You can be assured that the goal of the task force is to set the stage for specialized jobs that command higher than average incomes, thereby, supporting a healthy standard of living.

The planning for this starts now, and I would be happy to take your suggestions to the task force table to form part of our discussion there. In the meantime, I’m going to go out and enjoy some more of this lovely spring weather!

recently attended the 2012 Annual General Meeting of the BC Chamber of Commerce together with our president Patrick Giesbrecht and vice-president Mike Welte. The BC Chamber represents over 120 Chambers of Commerce and 32,000 businesses of every size, sector and region of the province.

Never has the need for being more informed on critical matters affecting the commercial and industrial activities of the present, and the activities of future generations, been more acute, and never has the opportunity for the business community to provide significant inputs to those policy decisions our governments now face been more prevalent.

And that’s where we, the BC Chamber of Commerce, representing the business community, come in. Because whether it is policy statements flowing directly from our long standing

and reputable policy development process, or input provided in concert with like-minded organizations facing similar challenges, the voice of chamber members throughout the province is being heard.

For many years now, we have been advocating to both levels of senior government for more and better resolutions to the ongoing land use issues driven by aboriginal claims in this province, the one province in Canada practically devoid of treaties.

Certainty, a term somewhat overused in many contexts, is a condition required to attract

financial and human capital.

And for a province so dependent on its land base, not having the required degree of certainty has a significant cost for us all.

Recent major announcements illustrate how fragile the element of certainty is.

Our commitment to the Asia Pacific strategy is being challenged by pushback for continued port development; confusion over whether or not there are First Nations vetoes in effect; whether or not there is a real or imagined moratorium on coastal tanker traffic; a four-year process of review for a pipeline designed to gain market access for a land-locked natural resource in a market timely fashion; LNG opportunities which need quick response to become a reality, and which will surely test the system; the opening of a major transportation arterial infrastructure that is causing a possible re-think of government tolling policy and road manage-

ment strategies in the Lower Mainland; governance models for key transportation operations in the face of increased demand for taxation revenues, and a voting public that is annoyed at what is perceived to be over taxation and under spending by governments.

The chamber will continue to focus its efforts on that protection, whether it’s maintaining our competitive corporate and small business tax rates; our flexible employment standards, or even our much improved labour code.

We are part of the largest and most broadly based business organization in Canada, an organization with the ear of governments at all three levels, a competitive advantage that is clearly sustainable. We will continue to leverage this advantage to ensure success.”

Yale’s Desch claims bronze at provincials

hantel Desch was the shining light of the Yale track team, bringing home not one but two bronze medals from the B.C. Track and Field Championships last weekend at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby.

The Grade 12 runner captured bronze in the 400m and 200m finals, making her the first female athlete from Yale Secondary to win an individual medal at the track provincials.

“She’s the star runner this year,” said head track coach Trevor Wight. “She’s the best game day performer that I’ve ever coached. She did exceedingly well on the main stage.”

Yale sent only three athletes to the championship, due in part to the teachers’ ongoing job action. “[We had] a very committed core group of kids who went the distance. It was a silver lining to what had been a tough season,” added Wight.

Other results from local athletes: Hailey Gibson of W.J. Mouat placed fifth in 100m final (12.67); Kayla Lennea of Hatzic finished fifth in women’s 800m final (2:19.23); Alex Siemens of WJM finished sixth in 1,500m final (4:42.29) and fifth in 3,000m final (10:15.33).

Sarya Ross of WJM was 16th (11:15.56) and Evangeline Kesteven of MEI was 19th (11:37.41) in 1,500m final.

Abbotsford Christian’s 4x400m relay team of Janelle Hay, Stephanie Kies, Jordyn Visser and Chelsea Jenner finished fifth in the final with a time of 4:06.91, followed by W.J. Mouat’s team of Jory Smallenberg, Sarya Ross, Alex Siemens and Francesca Jackman in sixth (4:08.11).

Abbotsford Collegiate’s Manpreet Grewal placed fifth in the women’s discus (33.17m) and 10th in hammer throw (34.36m); Evangeline Kesteven of MEI was 15th in 1,500m steeplechase (5:53.44); Catherine Taekema of Abby Christian was seventh in pole vault (2.40m) and Rachel Choboter of SJB was eighth (2.10m). Nicola Hiller of MEI was 12th in women’s long jump (4.80) and Casey De Jong of Abby Christian was 18th (4.37m).

Briefly UFV golfers are 10th The University of the Fraser Valley men’s golf team finished 10th at the 2012 Canadian University Canadian College golf tournament in Victoria.

“In a tournament where only the top 20 teams in Canada get invited, to finish 10th is pretty decent,” said head coach Chris Bertram. “I’d be lying though if I didn’t say we could have been better. But that’s the way it is in golf.”

The Cascades team score was 1,192; their best day was Wednesday (Day 2) when they shot 293.

The Cascades were led by their All-Canadian Aaron Pauls who finished with a four-day total of 289, good for 18th place out of 103 student athletes.

“The final day was a little disappointing but I feel like I learned a lot this week. All in all, this season was a success and we are all excited to get back at it in the fall,” said Pauls.

Scott Benstead had a four day total of 300, Mitch Lock and Darren Whitehouse each had a final score of 304 and Scott McArthur shot 310.

Olympian debuts in Abby Ruky Abdulai will make her season’s debut Wednesday evening at the Lafarge High Performance meet at Rotary Stadium.

Jarid Vaughan, one of Canada’s most dependable sprinters and a former NCAA competitor for a university in Texas will run in the men’s 100m on Wednesday. With a best time in the 100m of 10.51 seconds, Vaughan is a favourite to win the short sprint on.

Jared Mortensen threw eight shutout innings for his top-seeded LSU Shreveport (La.) Pilots as they beat No. 4 ranked Tennessee Wesleyan 7-3 in the Avista-NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho Wednesday night.

Mortensen, a senior righthander from Abbotsford, allowed only three hits and no runs through the first eight innings as the Pilots, 54-5 overall, stayed alive in the 10-team doubleelimination tournament.

Although he gave up four hits and three r uns in the bottom of the ninth, Mortensen finished the game with nine strikeouts and three walks.

Thursday the Pilots lost to Wesleyan 17-10 to end their season and finish in third place. The Pilots had a great run in 2012 as they set a new single season record with 54 wins as well as being ranked No. 1 in the NAIA for six straight weeks.
