ou may have noticed giant palm trees popping up in downtown Abbotsford — that’s because the historic city core is being transformed into a ‘Christmas in Miami’ set for an upcoming made-for-TV movie Holiday Spin. Shooting started yesterday and will take place for three more days, wrap-

ping up Sunday morning at 4 a.m. Ralph ‘Karate Kid’ Macchio is the lead, playing a father who runs a dance studio (to be shot inside the National Training Centre on Montrose Avenue) which has fallen on hard times. In these scenes he’ll prepare star students for the annual Christmas Eve ballroom dance competition. “It’s kind of exciting to have [the movie] happening in the downtown,”

said Tina Stewart, executive director of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association. “It can be pretty exciting to watch it happening. Folks are encouraged to come down and watch; they can stand right across the street from the shoot.” She added that businesses will remain open, as will Montrose Avenue for traffic flow. “Stuff like this happens downtown, it doesn’t close the downtown, and

businesses are still available.” Holiday Spin is a sequel to another movie shot in downtown Abbotsford two years ago called On Strike for Christmas. Garrett Clayton from the Disney Channel’s Teen Beach Musical is also in the film, scheduled to be broadcast next fall just before Christmas. Several local business are involved see MOVIE, page A6

Royal Canadian 861 Silverfox Air Cadets muster for the squadron’s 34th annual ceremonial review on June 2 in the Ag-Rec Building at Abbotsford’s Exhibition Park. Top brass dignitaries included Maj. Dave Timms, Pacific Region, and reviewing officer, retired Col. Tarlochan S. Rai, VSM, from India.

n Abbotsford man busted with several thousand dollars worth of drugs, guns and ammunition was sentenced to 30 days time served in Chilliwack Supreme Court last Thursday. David Marcel Chubb, 32, was charged with three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking and two weapons charges after the Abbotsford police gang suppression unit and the emergency response team raided an apartment in the 2700 block of Fairlane Street on June 16, 2010. A revolver, a semi-automatic handgun, a silencer, ammunition, two pounds of marijuana, and a large quantity of OxyContin tablets and cocaine were seized. Chubb – well known to police with more than 40 interactions with Lower Mainland law enforcement since 2005 – was a gang associate, according to the APD. The quality of the OxyContin captured suggested Chubb wasn’t a “street-level” gangster but rather “high up on the food chain,” said Const. Ian MacDonald at the time. Chubb pleaded guilty to the drug possession charges and was ordered to pay an additional fine of $300. However, the charges of unauthorized possession of a firearm and possession of a prohibited weapon without a licence have been stayed. – WITH A FILE FROM THE PROVINCE
