Citizen group forms to oppose pipeline plan

There’s a new group of Burnaby residents coalescing to oppose the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion.

The group has roughly 18 members,

and they are calling themselves BROKE – Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion. Some are residents whose homes were affected by the 2007 pipeline rupture, while others have concerns about the environment. The group has had a couple of meeting so far, and the next is scheduled for tonight.

“We come from lots of different backgrounds, and we barely know each other.

concerned about climate change,” said Karl Perrin, group member and UniverCity resident. “Our objective is to continue with things as they are in terms of the foreshore in Burnaby, and we have a relatively clean ocean out there. We don’t want more tankers; we don’t want a tanker every day going in the inlet. … People in Vancouver don’t want it either. There are tons of people that don’t want it. … Of course Kinder Morgan has lots of money to make it happen. It’s not an easy fight.”

Kinder Morgan is the third largest energy company in North America and is valued at roughly $100 billion. The company operates the Trans Mountain pipeline, which has been running oil from Alberta to Burnaby since the ‘50s. Kinder Morgan would like to twin the line, more than doubling capacity from 300,000 barrels a day to 750,000 to meet rising demand for Canadian crude in Asia. atch any episode of CSI and you’d think the police process, collect, analyze and reach conclusions about crime evidence in an hour – with coffee breaks and commercial breaks thrown in.

But the reality is evidence is often dirty, cumbersome, incomplete ON MY BEAT and may need to be Alfie Lau stored for years, if not decades.

The Burnaby RCMP’s evidence and exhibits area is one of the most tightly controlled areas in the main detachment.

From the moment an officer brings in evidence and places it in a locker to the time exhibit staff process, label and store the evidence, cameras are capturing every move.

The Burnaby NOW was recently given a tour of the Burnaby RCMP’s evidence and exhibits area by Chief Supt. Dave Critchley, and it was hard not to marvel at how extensive and comprehensive the infrastructure surrounding the evidence is.

There are actually four separate areas where evidence is maintained, and the chain of custody must remain unbroken at all times so that the evidence can be presented properly in court.

We start in the exhibit office, where all evidence collected by police is logged in. Officers can come in at any time and put their evidence in one of 50-plus secure lockers. Larger items, including cars or any items using gasoline, are secured in a downstairs garage.

After officers fill out their appropriate paperwork, exhibit staff start processing the evidence.

Const. Kuljinder Sidhu is dropping off a passport and some identification that is immediately logged in by Const. Jessica Simons. The evidence is put in a clear plastic sealed bag with a label, and Sidhu signs off on the paperwork for this evidence.

Simons is one of several employees working in the area, with the most senior person having three decades of service.

Simons can’t help but laugh when asked what the most unusual item brought in recently.

“Check this out,” said Simons as she brings out an umbrella.

What makes the umbrella a public safety risk is that the handle is a replica of the butt of a rifle, meaning a quick glance at the umbrella and you might think you’re seeing something a bit more nefarious.

“The officer who brought this in has cited this as a public safety risk,” said Simons. “He’s asked for it to be destroyed. We’ll process it and let it go through the process.”

It’s not usually that easy for the exhibit staff because in a normal year, they may be asked to process anywhere between 12,000 and 60,000 exhibits. And while an umbrella looking like a rifle is rather compact, one exhibit can be as complex as a whole truckfull of stolen tools or an entire basement of grow-op equipment, marijuana plants or crystal meth.

With so many items coming in, you’d think the police would run out of room to store everything, but each month, approximately 1,000 items are destroyed

or returned to their rightful owners.

“Either we don’t need them any more, or in the case of stolen property items, we get them back to the original owners,” said Critchley.

And then there’s the bloodstained items.

Critchley said evidence stained with blood or other biological hazards are often important in court cases and unlike on television, where a CSI does the lab work in a state-of-the-art police facility, the work is farmed out to a secure local lab.

But the storage of items is still the work of the exhibits staff, and that’s why drying racks and secure refrigeration areas are needed.

From the main exhibits office, we are taken to the room where larger items or items that need to be dried are stored. The room is non-descript, but there are cameras that cover every inch of the room.

From this area, we’re led into another locked room, perhaps the most secure place in the entire building.

“This is where we store seized firearms, ammunition and knives,” said Critchley as Const. Melissa Wutke shows off some of the items in the room.

Knives are stored in separate lockboxes, right beside the rifles and handguns, which are all individually stored in labelled bags.

In the corner are more lockboxes in which ammunition is stored.

It all looks pretty innocent because the guns, knives and ammunition are covered, but look in the rolling locked cage, and you’ll see the items that are scheduled for destruction.

“These guns are headed for the crusher,” said Wutke. “Every couple of months, or when the cage gets full, two officers take the cage to the crusher, and they personally watch it get destroyed.”

Wutke then makes a small circle with her fingers to show how small the end pieces from the crusher are.

From this room, we head into the main storage area, where literally thousands of exhibits, boxed or bagged, are stored on shelves according to year.

The sticky note with the oldest date is 1985, but the oldest evidentiary items in the Burnaby evidence area go back to an unsolved homicide from 1969.

“That’s the thing with evidence,” said Critchley, “you have to keep holding on to it because you might need it. ... It’s not like Wal-Mart where you order in an item, and you sell it and then you order in more items. ... Plus, what we do get in can be anything. It might be dirty, it might be bloody, it might be broken glass or it might be a whole grow op. We have to process every piece and account for it so that the

custody chain is never broken.”

The detachment recently received approximately $100,000 to upgrade its evidence facilities and that money has been put to good use. A new refrigeration unit goes beside the older unit and the shelving can all be manipulated with a crank of a wheel.

As our tour continues, we pass by the locked room where cold case homicide files and evidence are stored.

According to Wutke, the files and evidence in that room can be kept for 99 years.

Our last stop is the garage, where cars, lawnmowers, bikes and motorcycles are stored.

“Anything that uses gas, we have to store in a safe place and for employee health and safety,” said Critchley.

In one corner of the garage is a locked cage where tools, bikes, computer hard drives and everything in between is stored.

“Those tools in the corner, they’re all part of the same theft or group of thefts,” said Wutke. “Once we process all of it and we don’t need it any more, hopefully, we’ll get it back to their original owners.”

Critchley is immensely proud of the work the exhibits staff do.

“This is hard work,” he said. “It’s dirty, you’re dealing with blood, you’re dealing with sometimes incomplete items. ... And you have to make sure the continuity chain is never broken and that somebody can always account for where that piece (of evidence) is. It’s hard, challenging work, and I believe our team is one of the best.”

As we head back to the main office for the end of our tour, Simons has brought out the proverbial kitchen sink, another piece of evidence in a case.

Dear Editor:

Re: Women’s soccer ref wrong, Letters to the editor, Burnaby NOW, Aug. 15.

I was disappointed to read Garth Evans’ letter in the Aug. 15 issue of the Burnaby NOW. Without giving a single example to back up his, what might best be called a rant, he chastises the referee at the London Olympics women’s soccer semi-final as being “incompetent.”

Putting aside the emotion, which Mr. Evans appears to be swept-up in, it is my opinion the two crucial calls the referee made that had such an impact on the outcome were perfectly legitimate under the rules of soccer:

Penalizing the Canadian goalkeeper for carrying the ball for more than six seconds: The keeper herself acknowledged she was earlier verbally warned by the referee for doing this during the game; so when she did it again – for 13 seconds – she was justifiably penalized.

The handball call on the ensuing free kick: The ball struck the Canadian player on the forearm while it was headed for the Canadian goal, a penalty kick is the prescribed result.

Of course it was unfortunate, emotional and disappointing, but let’s at least be fair. What was of more concern to me was the emotional intemperate remarks by some of the Canadian players at the end of the match. It was reported one of our

I would hope, in future, all our representatives are cautioned with respect to outbursts such as this. As it is, FIFA, the international soccer body, is investigating this matter, and discipline may follow. We have the women’s World Cup for soccer here in 2015, again the world will be watching, quickly followed by the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Let’s resolve to do better. Congratulations to all our athletes who competed in London, well done!

Re: “Old, white guys’ at Conservative helm,” In my opinion, Keith Baldrey, Burnaby NOW, Aug. 15.

Keith Baldrey is bang on in the way he describes the makeup of the B.C. Conservative Party. For the most part, anyway. Being a conservative, old white guy, I have often thought about the missing young faces in our ranks, though.

Because I am concerned about it I had to take a trip to the mirror. Where was I at a younger age? Missing in action! The old cliche comes to mind: anyone under 30 who is not a socialist has no heart. And, anyone over 30 who is still a Socialist has

no brain!

Then reality sets in: certain students at university are required to be involved in grassroots politics in order to be taken seriously. They do have a choice which party they wish to work with. Really? The artificial climate at university has stunted the growth of most professors who have retained their left leanings even way past the age of 30.

If, as a student, you then show to prefer the right, you actually tell your professor that, in your opinion, s/he does not know what s/he is talking about. Not a smart move! Right there it explains in part why the left sees more young helpers than we do.

The matter of “social conservatism” has to be taken a bit more seriously. There are so many areas where we conservatives can do better: smaller government, education, law and order, bankrolling of political parties, the environment or the economy, including the building of pipelines! Social conservatism seems of importance only to the media because a candidate may have expressed leanings which could hurt him at the polls if blown out of proportion.

Reporters will do their utmost to trip the candidate to do just that.

These leanings would, however, never ever make a difference in government, as demonstrated by Mr. Harper, because there are more important messes to be cleaned up. Social conservatism, if it ever comes up in my circles, is like expressing a preference for Chinese or Indian food. I happen to like both. After all is said, who cares?

The trouble is that China wants raw materials from its trading partners, not refined ones. It wants to do its own refining, for a variety of reasons.

Of course, if the refinery and pipeline did indeed proceed (perhaps tied together by the joint review panel examining the Enbridge proposal), it may force China to change its policy if taking refined oil became their only access to the tar sands (keep in mind China has also invested billions of dollars buying up the companies mining the oil sands, a factor that could play a role in this debate).

Another potential obstacle to Black’s plan is the party that could form the government in this

province next spring.

The NDP’s energy critic says the refinery does not change his party’s opposition to the Enbridge pipeline. John Horgan, who may very well be B.C.’s energy minister by the time Black’s environmental permit application is heard, says he’s not opposed to a refinery per se, but he says Kitimat is the wrong location for it.

As for the Clark government, it is a big backer of liquefied natural gas plants and pipelines in the Kitimat region, but a refinery may not answer its stated concerns about B.C. bearing all the risk from the Enbridge pipeline.

Finally, a refinery doesn’t appear to have lessened opposition to the Northern Gateway project among

First Nations. Stewart Phillip, the president of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs, has dismissed the refinery as a non-starter.

So Black has a big job ahead of him for this project to succeed, and the odds appear to be stacked against him.

Boil it all down, and his refinery is tied to a pipeline project that appears to be going nowhere fast.

But he’s added a new element to the debate on the most contentious megaproject this province has seen in decades.

And a guy who wants to invest $13 billion and create thousands of jobs shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand.

Man stabbed Alfie Lau

A man is in hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries after he was stabbed on the street outside a condo complex in the 4800-block of Brentwood Drive on Monday evening.

According to Cpl. Rick Skolrood of the Burnaby RCMP,theincidentoccurred between 7 and 7:30 p.m.

“The motive is not known and we are still looking for the implement used,” said Skolrood. “We do not believe this was random and we do not believe there is a danger to the public.”

Skolrood said the victim does not appear to have gang ties, but had previous contact with the police, although police do not believe this was a factor in the stabbing.

“There was a lot of blood outside the building,” said Skolrood.

Clint Moffatt, a resident on the eighth floor of the building, told The Vancouver Sun that he saw a great deal of blood spatter.

“The front building was cordoned off,” he said.

“There was a large amount of [fresh] blood in front by the fountain, in the lobby, and [dried blood] in the elevator.”

company has yet to apply to the National Energy Board for project approval, but the existing line runs through Burnaby’s Forest Grove area at the bottom of Burnaby Mountain and over to the Westridge Marine Terminal, where tankers fill up with crude. Environmentalists are estimating the expansion could mean 300 tankers in the inlet annually.

Heights resident Ruth Walmsley got involved in BROKE over concerns for the environment.

“We don’t want to have the Kinder Morgan pipeline twinned, because that would cause more expansion of the tar sands,” she said. “The larger issue is to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.”

According to Walmsley, homes could potentially be expropriated to make

way for the twin line, and there’s the possibility of an oil spill.

“We want to really focus on public awareness of the pipeline and the impacts it would have on our neighbourhood and the ecosystem on Burrard Inlet,” she said.

The next BROKE meeting is today (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. at the McGill library branch, but the group is still getting organized, so they are not ready to open it to the public yet.

Kinder Morgan’s Andrew Galarnyk said the company hopes those interested in the project will engage in meaningful and constructive dialogue.

Galarnyk said public consultation will begin in fall.

Gebara says the most important aspect of the project is to simply raise awareness for the need to support cancer research.

The pashminas cost $25, with $20 from each sale going to the Tapestry Foundation to help pay for a new mammography machine at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital.

“We have to help and do our part, if it’s a little bit or a lot,” said Gebara.

“Even if it’s a little bit, at the end, if they ever do find a cure, at least you’ll know that you had a part in it.”

Gebara has made a personal pledge to donate $500

to the Tapestry Foundation for each completed transaction she makes through her work as a real estate agent, until the full $650,000 is raised for a new digital mammography machine.

As well, she plans to donate $1,000 per completed sale to Children’s Hospital for children’s cancer research.

MPs take issue with commissioner’s comments staff reporter

Burnaby’s federal MPs are raising concerns that the public will not have a say in the electoral boundary changes proposed for Burnaby.

Burnaby-Douglas MP Kennedy Stewart and Burnaby-New Westminster MP Peter Julian – both New Democrats – are taking issue with Stewart Ladyman’s comments in a recent Huffington Post B.C. article.

Ladyman and two other appointed commissioners were tasked with redrawing B.C.’s electoral boundaries to accommodate the province’s growing population. One of the more stark suggestions was to split the current Burnaby-Douglas riding in half and combine the northern part with a large chunk of North Vancouver.

According to a poll-by-poll analysis by the HuffPost, Burnaby could stand to lose a seat (Stewart’s Burnaby-Douglas seat) to the Conservatives if the Burnaby-North Seymour riding goes through.

Ladyman seemed to be hinting that this newly proposed riding of BurnabyNorth Seymour will stay put.

“The North BurnabyNorth Vancouver issue has been on the table for a number of commissions, and there is just no way this time around but to cross the river,” Ladyman told HuffPost B.C. Stewart took issue with Ladyman’s comments.

“Before the consultation process even begins, commissioner Ladyman has declared that he and the commission are not interested in the concerns of our communities,” said Stewart. “The boundary commission must clarify these comments immediately and restore faith in this process.”

Meanwhile, Julian called for an apology.

On Tuesday, Ladyman told the NOW that his comments were not meant to insinuate that the public would have no say.

“We have 22 public meetings. We are willing to listen. We are hoping people will come forward with suggestions that aren’t just about their ridings,” he said.

Anderson is currently playing the lead role of Kate in The Taming of the Shrew at Bard on the Beach, to great reviews and standing ovations.

Her Kate rants and screams, torments her sister, slaps her suitor, and eventually winds up in noholds-barred wrestling.

She did take the one course given in drama at Cariboo Hill, but it was the professionalism of teacher Deirdre Heatherington that inspired and stayed with her.

“She was teaching, but she was actually acting, too, with Vancouver Opera,” she said.

But Anderson wasn’t bitten by the acting bug

She followed high school with a degree in English literature from UBC. Then, after a fascinating spell on an archaeological dig in an Israeli desert, on the site of a fifth century Roman fort, finding coins and artifacts, she says she

had an urge to try something different, “I figured I could always come back and dig in the desert, if it didn’t turn out,” Coming home, she auditioned for UBC’s theatre program, was accepted, eventually graduating with her masters in theatre arts.

From then on it was theatre – every kind, from street theatre, to circus and clowning, very physical and often impromptu, especially with Cirque Poule and Leaky Heaven Circus, and the former Caravan Theatre run by the parents of her husband, production manager Elia Kirby, until eventually she realized, “I craved working with text, a script, written work.” That led to Bard on the Beach, and Shakespeare, for the last half-dozen years.

As well as her roles at Bard on the Beach, she’s appeared with regional and independent theatre companies.

She’s taught theatre at SFU, and this fall, will be teaching at UBC. Meanwhile she and her husband

raised two daughters, and took them everywhere they worked – different places in Canada, Australia and elsewhere. “They had a great quality of life, it’s been exciting.”

Of her students, she’s noticed, “There are students who take the classes, do well, but are not really driven. However, you always benefit from a theatre class, you gain self-confidence, how to speak, and how to present yourself. Then there are the ones you see and realize – this is an actor – they are driven, because it’s their passion.

It’s not an easy life, especially now with all the funding cuts to the arts.”

Seeking superstars in singing competition

Lougheed Town Centre hosts finalists performing in this week’s singing competition

Imagine seeing a future superstar before they make it big.

An upcoming series of events at Lougheed Town Centre may be a chance to do just that.

The North Road shopping centre is hosting Lougheed Sings, a singing competition, where visitors to the mall will get the chance to check out the competition in the coming weeks.

Contestants had until Aug. 18 to submit a demo in person, on YouTube or by email.

From all the submissions, a short list of 10 finalists will be determined. Those 10 will have the chance to receive a private voice lesson and then go on to perform in a

live, Canadian Idol style show at Lougheed on Aug. 24.

The public will then have the chance to vote online and by mail.

The finalists will perform again on Aug. 31, during a “red carpet” celebration evening.

The grand prize winner will be decided by a combination of judges’ points and number of votes received.

Judges include Jan Cooper of Pump Records, Frederick Robert (a former member of The Canadian Tenors), and Adam H. of Rockstar Academy.

The winner will get two tickets to Madonna’s show in Vancouver on Sept.

Video cooking contest being held in Burnaby Marelle Reid staff reporter

When the dinner bell rings, some kids have to be dragged to the table, while others come running.

And then there are those who were in the kitchen all along, helping mom and dad prepare the family meal.

These kids are more likely to eat a balanced diet, do better in school and have better social skills, according to research from Better Together, a partnership between the B.C. Ministry of Health and B.C. Dairy Foundation.

In a creative effort to encourage multi-generational meal preparation, Better Together is sponsoring a video contest to showcase family meals this summer.

The third annual Hands-on Cook-off contest is an open invitation to create a video of two generations cooking or baking together, and contestants can win cash or grocery store prizes.

“The Hands-on Cook-off contest is the perfect summer activity for B.C. families,” said Sydney Massey, one of the creators of Better Together, and director of nutrition education at the B.C. Dairy Association, in a recent release. “This fun, simple contest is our way of reminding B.C. about the benefits to all people of cooking and eating together.”

Last year she and Jakob, now three years old, enlisted her husband Ryan to record a video of them making her dad’s well-loved pancake recipe, which can still be seen on the contest website; www.bettertogetherbc.ca.

Their entry won a kids’ book and fridge magnets with a message about the importance of healthy nutrition.

“He loves the book, and so it was pretty exciting for him,” Murphy said.

Teaching Jakob about proper nutrition is another important part of having him involved in meal prep, she said.

“I know there’s research out there that shows if they’re involved in the process, then it helps them with the eating part, too,” she said. “Because there are kids out there who are picky eaters, … and kids aren’t so keen on eating what you put in front of them. But if they have a sense of ownership and if they’ve partaken in it, then usually you can at least get them to try it.”

The contest deadline is Sept. 3.

Videos must show two generations cooking together and be no longer than three minutes.

No tech skills are required.

Videos can be shot using any kind of device; even a cell phone camera.

Prizes for first and second place are $1,500 and $1,000 respectively in gift certificates for any of the Overwaitea Food Group stores.

But winners can instead opt for cash amounts of $1,125 and $750, respectively.

A People’s Choice Award winner will also be selected based on public votes and will receive a $500 gift certificate to any of the Overwaitea Food Group stores or $375 cash.

First-time entrants will be entered into a draw for one Genesis Titan Silver Starter Kit soda maker, and all participants will be entered into a draw for one Kitchenaid Artisan Stand Mixer.

The contest will be judged by a panel of experts, including cookbook authors, restaurant owners and “foodies.”

Some enjoy shade. For instance, the hardy fuchsia is perfect for planting under a north-facing window. There, the humming birds it attracts give hours of entertainment as they suck nectar from its single, fairly small but very numerous purple and pink flowers.

For reliable root hardiness, it is important to grow the basic species, Fuchsia magellanica. This dies to the ground in most winters but always resprouts in spring. Clumps are tolerant of most soils, slowly increase and can be divided in spring when frost season’s over.

Sometimes Colchicum autumnale, which has smaller but profuse flowers is available in either white or pale pinkish purple. All colchicums are dormant through summer but begin producing leaves as flowers fade. Since the leaves are quite large in spring, colchicums need accommodating companions.

Golf-course café reborn as family restaurant THE DISH

or years, it was known as the snack shack for the Burnaby Mountain Golf Course.

While the always busy Eagle Creek Restaurant was the perfect 19th hole for golfers to tell their tall tales, the “shack” beside the 10th tee was a spot to grab a quick sandwich and beverage before duffers yanked their next drive under another tree.

Well, no longer is that the case, as the Squint Lake Café was reborn in June. Sure, you can still get a quick snack at the turn, but general manager Joanne Rombouts and chef Tony Snelgrove have turned the cozy little spot into a family-friendly eatery that seats 50 people inside and 30 on the patio.

“This was an under-uti-

lized part of our building,” said Rombouts, who has been a fixture at the restaurant for 15 years. “We wanted to do something different here.”

And different means having an affordable Friday and Saturday night family chicken feast.

Running from 5 to 8 p.m., the family platter includes a succulent roast chicken for four, with all the fixings, including healthy steamed vegetables and some of the yummiest mashed potatoes in the city. And on Sunday, the Sunday breakfast brunch, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is only $12 per person.

“If you have a family and want to eat affordably, this is the place,” said Rombouts, a new mother herself. The café can also be used for smaller receptions, and come the colder months, it may be the best place to hang out, simply because of the intimacy it offers.

I was able to watch Snelgrove prepare the

chicken – and the prime rib special that is on offer at Eagle Creek on Friday nights – and it’s hard not to appreciate the attention to detail Snelgrove puts into his work.

While other chefs would pass the work down the line, Snelgrove, originally from the south of England, is doing all the work himself, from getting the chickens into the oven to slicing the peppers and zucchini. In between, he’s working his magic on the mashed potatoes and making sure the Eagle Creek prime rib is primed for service.

“The gratification I get is from pleasing my customers. That doesn’t ever change,” said the soft-spoken Snelgrove. “You have to keep on doing your best and getting better with every meal.”

Snelgrove oversees the kitchen for both restaurants. His consistency is what makes Rombouts’ job easier.

I’ll also regain some perspective. We can get so caught up with the seriousness of our lives that we can miss the big

When one is suffering from an injury, he may say he feels so old. I can reassure him that he will recover so he can feel young again.

Life is a journey, and Burnaby’s Aeryon Ashlie has never been happier with the road she’s travelling on.

The just-turned 38-year-old fitness model recently placed fifth in the master’s bikini competition at the Canadian Body Building Federation national bikini, figure, fitness and elite men’s bodybuilding championships in New Westminster on Aug. 11.

Competition is nothing new to the single mother of four-year-old Mekaella. But getting back on stage was.

Ashlie’s father was a bodybuilder, so having muscle magazines within reaching distance was part of growing up, she said.

But Ashlie also wrestled with an eating disorder at a young age, going through cycles of binging and purging for 12 years before finally taking charge of herself.

She developed a passion for fitness at the age of 16, but her battle with body image and weight gain persisted even after she entered the competitive fitness scene in Ontario.

Following the competitions, Ashlite would return to her unhealthy eating patterns.

But with the birth of her daughter, Ashlie made a life decision by listening to her body and following those rhythms through a balance of proper nutrition and exercise.

“I really made my voice strong. It was about me championing my story.

It wasn’t a choice,” said Ashlie.

A year ago, Ashlie left her failing relationship, became a single mom and began following an eating pattern that, she said, worked for her.

Called the Primal diet and based on the book Primal Blueprint, written by Mark Sissons, it suggests eating a diet of whole foods while eliminating processed foods and limiting carbohydrate intake. “It’s one I feel comfortable with,” she added.

Last spring, Ashlie was talked into returning to competition and she surprised herself by winning the Western Canadian championships in Kelowna. She then competed at the provincials and placed runnerup.

Ashlie emphasizes that the bikini competition is not about exploiting a women’s body, but rather one that is judged solely on the merits of a model’s muscular symmetry.

It’s part of that balance Ashlie believes she has found in her life.

TheBurnabyBarracudas medalled in all four age groups, including a pair of gold medals, at the B.C. summer swimming water polo provincials in Nanaimo last week.

Burnaby’s under-14 and u-16 coed teams both won gold, defeating runner-up Abbotsford Whalers in their respective finals on Aug. 15.

The u-14 Barracudas defeated Abbotsford 8-2 in the B.C. title match led by a pair of hat tricks by Luka Maletic and Dasha Strigoun.

Maletic tallied all three of this goals in the opening quarter to give Burnaby an early 4-0 advantage. Keith Jung and Ty Koch also scored for the ‘Cudas.

A game-ending, three-run fifth inning by Caribbean champ Curacao spelt the end for the Little League World Series dreams of the Hastings All-Stars.

TheCanadianchampionsdropped a nailbiting 4-3 decision to Pariba Little League champion Willemstad before nearly 5,000 onlookers at the World Little League baseball championships at Williamsport, Pennsylvania on Monday.

Hastings was just two innings away from a berth into the second round of the double-knockout tournament when Mychellon Jansen clubbed a two-run dinger off starting pitcher Cole Dalla-Zanna that stood up as the game-winner.

The inning started with Caribbean runners reaching base on a passed ball and an infield error. One run was batted home on a sacrifice fly that shaved the deficit to 3-2.

“It happens. We gave them the opportunity,” said Hastings manager Vito Bordignon from Williamsport.

“They took advantage of the opportunity we gave them and we didn’t take advantage of our hits.”

The All-Stars opened the 2012 World Series with a 13-9 win over Mexico last Friday.

Steven Moretto of Burnaby went three-for-three at the plate with three hits, two runs and one run batted in in the victory over Mexican champion Oriente Little League.

Dalla-Zanna scored a game-high four runs on two hits, while Carson Ho also reached home plate on two other occasions.

Infielder and leadoff hitter Kolby Buljevic chipped in with a hit and a RBI in the opening game. Noah Hanson-Stafford also scored a run for the Canadian champs.

Atura Yamaguchi pitched four strong innings to post the win for Hastings.

On Sunday, Hastings dropped an 8-3 decision to unbeaten Aguadulce of Panama.

Moretto, whose double was one of three hits for Hastings, took the loss on the mound, giving up eight hits and five earned runs. DallaZanna had the team’s only RBI in the contest. “(Mexico) was a great win, but I’m not sure we came down from that win,” said Bordignon of the subsequent loss to Panama.

“We faced a very good pitcher who confused us. Thirteen strikeouts is unusual for us.”

Hastings also went down swinging on 10 other occasions in the game against Curacao.

After Morretto’s two-out double scored Buljevic to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third, HansonStafford put Hastings into the lead with a two-run dinger in the fourth inning.

“That was a big hit at a big time for us,” said Bordignon. “Unfortunately it happened too early. I thought we had the game right there.”

Bortignon praised Dalla-Zanna for pitching a great game in the loss.

Dalla-Zanna threw 87 pitches, allowing just three hits while striking out nine Caribbean batters. “(Dalla-Zanna) did his job,” Bortignon said, adding the Hastings team has been in pressure situations before but none like at Williamsport.

“They’ve done it before, but not at this stage. It’s tough for them,” Bortignon said.

“They played as hard as they could and represented Canada very well.”

B.C.’s provincial youth basketball teams all came home with medals.

The provincial boys’ and girls’ under-15 and -17 teams all earned bronze medals at their respective national championship venues on Aug. 11.

St. Thomas More Collegiate’s Kamila Wojciechowski of Burnaby recorded three rebounds in B.C.’s 69-38 win over Quebec in the u-17 girls’ bronze-medal final in Fredericton, N.B. Ontario took the gold medal with a 6648 victory over Nova Scotia.

Another STM product, Gabrielle Laguerta of Burnaby, contributed two points and two boards in B.C.’s 58-47 victory over Ontario in the girls’ u-15 consolation final.

Quebec defeated Manitoba 77-56 to win the gold medal.

In Sherbrooke, Que., B.C.’s u-15 and -17 boys also won bronze, defeating Manitoba 65-51 and Quebec 74-73, respectively. Ontario won gold in both age divisions.

Earlier in the month, B.C. teams won gold at the u-16 Western Canadian basketball championships in Edmonton.

Martin Bogajev of Burnaby and STM’s Jalen Jana helped B.C. take gold with a 103-64 win over Manitoba.

The u-16 girls, including Domunique Booker of New Westminster and Peitra Gant of Burnaby, also shared gold following a narrow 64-61 victory over Saskatchewan in the Western final.

Local youth medal at Legion nationals Raquel Tjernagel of New Westminster brought home two track medals from the 2012 Canadian Youth Legion track and field championships in Charlottetown, P.E.I. this weekend.

Tjernagel won her first of two silver medals for Team B.C. in the under-16 girls’ 300 metres on Day 2 of the Canadian youth championships.

Tjernagel’s time of 39.82 seconds was less than twotenths of a second behind Ontario’s Mariam AbdulRashid.

Tjernagel also finished behind Abdul-Rashid in the final of the girls’ 200m, placing runner-up in a time of 25.29.

Westminster club runner, Sebastian Adugalski, a St. Thomas More Collegiate student, finished second in the u-18 boys’ 300m hurdles in a quick time of 38.38.

Kieran Johnston of Saskatchewan won the event in a Legion championship record time of 38.30.

Adugalski nipped Ontario’s Jared Kerr for the silver medal by two-hundredths of a second.

Adugalski also made the final of the 110m hurdles.

Ashlie believes as humans, we have unrealistic expectation surrounding our bodies and that’s why short-term diet and fitness regimes often fail.

The time taken toward reaching a goal is part of the journey and a large measure of the reward, she said, adding she’s never been happier than she is now.

“It’s a mental clarification that comes when you find that balance – work is better, relationships are better.

“Life is about changing your mindset. You only get one chance in everything you personally want to do,” she said.
