NEAR EASTSIDE COMMUNITY CENTER INDIANAPOLIS, IN, USA In 1872, Indiana erected one of the earliest prisons in the United States dedicated to housing women. Situated on a 15-acre plot at Randolph and New York streets on the near east side of Indianapolis, the prison served for years before its closure, leaving the site in a state of neglect. Initially secure, the premises later fell victim to vandalism, with broken windows, breached fences, and theft of copper and other valuable metals for scrap. Beyond being an unsightly presence, this site embodies the consequences of the prison pipeline within the neighborhood, casting a shadow that diminishes the aspirations of local residents. This project challenged students to reimagine the site’s potential for revitalizing community engagement, aiming to transform it from a symbol of neglect into a catalyst to reach for greater heights.

COMMUNITY CENTER CONTEXT + BRIEF

INDIANAPOLIS, IN

An exciting prospect emerged to develop and design a building on the premises. The focal point of this site, positioned at the center, is a community center that has been chosen for development. This selection is based on the center’s multifaceted program, which plays a crucial role in fulfilling the site’s overarching objectives. The community center is envisioned to serve as a valuable resource for skill-building, fostering community cohesion, and providing a space for meditation and contemplation. Its strategic placement and diverse program make it an integral component that aligns seamlessly with the overall purpose and vision of the site.

The Near Eastside neighborhood has rich history, however, has experienced immense social and economic downturn since the mid 20th century. As it stands today, the neighborhood ranks poorly in vacancy, income, crime, and education.

FORM DEVELOPMENT

CELL The community center design concept aims to reinterpret the site’s original meaning of cell (e.g., confinement) and focus on the ways the organization and volumetric manipulation of cells symbolize liberation and release from a recent history of societal repression.

02 MULTI-GENERATIONAL HOUSING TOWER CINCINNATI, OH, USA Cincinnati, with its unique history and cultural diversity, presents a unique tapestry of housing needs that demand innovative solutions. The city’s housing landscape is marked by a variety of residential styles, reflecting its eclectic nature. From historic neighborhoods with charming houses to contemporary urban developments, Cincinnati’s housing market caters to a diverse population with a wide range of preferences and needs. One notable aspect of Cincinnati’s housing dynamics is the existence of a diverse demographic, each with its distinct requirements. Minority communities, particularly those living in multigenerational households, pose a specific set of challenges and necessitate housing solutions that address their unique familial and cultural contexts. In response to the city’s vibrant and dynamic atmosphere, there is a growing demand for innovative housing solutions.

CONTEXT + BRIEF Considering the constraints posed by the site’s limited dimensions, the most pragmatic course of action was to embrace verticality as the primary design strategy.

Consequently, a towering structure, reaching a height of 330 feet, was erected from the ground up. This decision not only adheres to the practical necessity dictated by the site’s size but also signifies a deliberate shift towards a more efficient and innovative use of space. The vertical

Taking inspiration from the game of Tetris, the housing tower’s design concept revolves around the intricate interplay of geometric shapes, particularly the art of shape-fitting. The cubic base geometry not only permits limitless variations on a modular level but also forms a dynamic whole.

03 SUSTAINABLE TINY HOUSE INDIANAPOLIS, IN, USA Hand drafted on 24” x 36” sheets of paper, this project embodies the spirit of adventure, sustainability, and mindful living. The client, a passionate advocate for a lifestyle of transience and exploration, envisions a sustainable tiny home that seamlessly blends comfort with minimal environmental impact. They seek not just a dwelling, rather a mobile haven that mirrors their commitment to sustainable living. The opportunity was to craft a dwelling that is not only a testament to eco-conscious design but also a home on wheels, facilitating a lifestyle where carbon footprint is minimized, and every adventure leaves the gentlest trace. As the designer, I created a tiny house that embodies the essence of wanderlust, environmental stewardship, and comfortable living.

The design parameters for this project were predominantly within the purview of the designer, with the constraints of the tiny house informed by comprehensive research on municipal governments and building code agencies. A primary focus was placed on optimizing inhabitable space, leveraging the inherent adaptability and storage efficiency characteristic of tiny houses. Simultaneously, the objective was to uphold the liveability standards of these compact dwellings.

The program of the tiny house disseminates from the centrally-located, double height living space, with the lofts, kitchen, and bathroom stemming from it.

Hand drafting the orthographic projection view of this tiny house required creating a two-dimensional representation of the three-dimensional object using a set of standard drawing techniques.

Both the first and second floors were planned for optimal spatial utilization. The second level is dedicated to sleeping, while the main level accommodates daily household activities such as cooking, lounging, and restroom use. To enhance flexibility, a Murphy bed is strategically placed in the lounge area for overnight guests. Additionally, the central area of the second floor remains open, with strategically positioned windows facilitating the stack effect. This design choice not only regulates interior temperatures but also contributes to energy efficiency.

SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES

PV SHINGLES Photovoltaic shingles produce supplemental energy for the tiny house, reducing reliance on the grid and lowering electricity bills. Solar shingles are easier to maintain than solar panels and better integrate with asphalt roofs.

LOW-E GLASS The tiny house windows feature a coating of low-emissivity (Low-E) glass, which serves a dual purpose by efficiently reflecting heat back into the interior during winter, thereby enhancing thermal comfort, and deflecting it away from the living space during the summer.

SALVAGED METAL Preserving a rustic exterior aesthetic, repurposed corrugated panels from roofing and siding offer a resourceful solution for cladding a facade, concurrently minimizing environmental impact.

RECLAIMED SIDING STACK EFFECT The interior environment of the tiny house utilizes natural ventilation to enhance energy efficiency in a building. By strategically placing windows at different levels, warm air naturally rises and escapes through the upper openings, creating a continuous airflow.

The exterior of the tiny house is clad in weathered cedar and recycled redwood fencing, chosen for its cost-effectiveness and resilience to varying weather conditions.

04 POOLSCAPES, MOUNDS STATE PARK ANDERSON, IN, USA At Mounds State Park in Anderson, IN the landscape recounts centuries of history. Once inhabited by indigenous tribes practicing rituals, the land served as religious ground for the meticulous construction of burial mounds, involving the extraction and layer-by-layer building of earth formations. This project pays tribute to these indigenous rituals by transforming an untouched area within Mounds State Park. The metamorphosis includes a series of landscape alterations, organically crafting poolscapes amid the natural topography. These alterations aim to replicate the historical practices of indigenous people, specifically the extraction and addition of mud. The architectural structures display a fragmented appearance, highlighting the use of native limestone from the region. The site comprises a central building with amenities and five separate guest residences, providing visitors with an immersive poolscape experience.

SITE CONFIGURATION CONTEXT + BRIEF The foundation of the project relies on the rich historical backdrop of Mounds State Park. The objective was to conceptualize engaging poolscapes strategically positioned within the park. The existing poolhouse, marked by a dull aesthetic and signs of deterioration, prompted the need for a revitalized poolscape at this location. The envisioned poolscape aims not only to captivate park users with its interactive design but also to evoke the historical significance embedded in the park’s narrative. Consequently, the project attempts to serve as a blend of contemporary functionality and a relic to the storied past of indigenous tribes at Mounds State Park.

SITE PLAN CHARACTERISTICS The selected area on the site was based on its topographic features. Positioned within a tree line and embedded in the ground, the site naturally offers both privacy and facilitates water collection for the poolscapes.

The driving concept for form generation was earthwork, or engineering works created through the processing of manipulating earth’s surface involving quantities of soil.

The form of each building and the landscape are to be altered to reflect the process of earthwork through a manual manipulation of material.

The direct link between the main building and public pools is essential for guests’ convenience. The plaza serves as a versatile gathering space for users.

PRIVATE POOLS

The guest house program was streamlined to create a minimalist living space, emphasizing the importance of connecting with the surrounding landscape rather than spending time indoors.

The landscape manipulations followed both an additive and subtractive approach, mirroring the sequential process required for the construction of the mounds on the site. These landscape manipulations culminated in the creation of distinctive organic pools.

MATERIALITY The cultural significance of limestone extends far and wide in this region of the country. Here limestone reflects the geological locale, and it is prized for its workability, allowing artisans and architects to carve intricate details into limestone. This stone is the elected exterior material due to the way quarrying, processing, and distributing limestone have historically generated opportunities and economic benefits for the state and its people.
