FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

The holiday season is such a fun time in Naples… we might do things a little differently when it comes to snow and traditional northern decor, but this area is equally festive. There is excitement in the air as the snowbirds fly back south and old friends return to visit. What we lack in snowflakes, SWFL makes up in poinsettias, twinkle lights and Mimosas! Typically the January issue is all about selfimprovement and New Year's resolutions… but why wait? Even though the holiday season is the happiest time of year, it can also be the most stressful. Holiday events, gifts, family and work obligations dominate your life. Everyone is eating and drinking like there is no tomorrow! In the rush to give and to accommodate everyone, don't forget to take care of yourself. Enjoy a waterside meal at a nice restaurant, or consider that beauty treatment you've always wanted. It's been a long year and you deserve it! In this issue, for the first time, Pulse Magazine took the fashion shoot out of Naples and onto the urban streets of NYC. Don't worry, ladies; you can still purchase all the hot fashions at Puddy 'N Pearl Boutique in The Collection at Vanderbilt. We are also introducing a new travel column by Martina Schonfeld. Naples is beautiful and it is home, but there is a big world out there to explore. You will notice several new advertisers on these pages. Welcome to Pulse! These featured businesses cater to a younger crowd, and they deserve all the business you can give. Happy Holidays... may all your wishes come true. ~ Pam Lazarto ~ Photography by Monique Russ

P

LEASE GIVE US A BRIEF BIO AND

DESCRIBE YOUR MUSICAL STYLE.

I was born in High Wycombe, England and moved with my mom to Naples, Florida when I was two. I have been singing since I could talk. Country music was what I first listened to when growing up, and then pop and rock. My preference is to sing songs that strike a personal emotional chord, but I also enjoy singing a wide range of music.

HOW

DID SINGING SHAPE YOUR EARLY LIFE?

My mom bought me my first karaoke machine when I was about three. As a child, my party piece was dressing up in my cowboy boots and hat, singing and dancing to "Friends in Low Places" by Garth Brooks

DO DO

YOU HAVE ANY FORMAL VOICE TRAINING?

DO

YOU WRITE YOUR OWN SONGS?

YOU PLAY OTHER INSTRUMENTS?

About five years ago, I had six months of stage presentation and vocal training to prepare for a national competition. Other than that, I have always just practiced at home or at karaoke. I played the violin from sixth to eleventh grade, and have plans to start guitar lessons in the near future. I'm in the process of writing some original material, but am not currently performing any of my own songs.

GROUP? I sang for two years at The Grecian Gardens restaurant with a 50's & 60's Doo Wop group called The Consecutones, but mostly I've been singing solo.

YOU

SWFL'S STAR QUEST AND OTHER CONTESTS. DESCRIBE THOSE EXPERIENCES. COMPETED IN

SWFL Star Quest was a lot of fun, and I made it into the semi-finals. I enjoy competing since I feel it keeps me on my toes, and also gives me a chance to meet other people who share the same passion for music. In the summer of 2002, I competed on The Karaoke Showdown show on Fox TV and tied for first place. One of my favorite competitions was in March, 2007 when I made it to first place in a country karaoke contest benefiting the March of Dimes. I've since donated my time and sung at some other March of Dimes events. From 2002-2005, I belonged to a non-profit organization called NACMAI (North American Country Music Association Incorporated). NACMAI is an organization that focuses on the youth and bringing together musicians of all ages in the country, gospel, and bluegrass genres. They have three contests a year, local, state, and national. The National competition is held for a week, and people compete in a large theatre in Pigeon Forge, TN every day from 7:30am-11pm. You have to place in the top two in your genre and age group to move on to the next contest. Each year I made it to Nationals and placed, but my greatest accomplishment was in 2005 when I earned first place for vocals and entertainer!

WHAT ARTISTS

DO YOU MOST ADMIRE AND

WHO HAS INSPIRED YOUR SOUND?

I admire artists who take chances to be who they are instead of just going with the flow and fitting the pop star mold, and also artists who cross genres, like Faith Hill and Carrie Underwood. An artist should not be defined by a music category. I love to sing country music, such as Sugarland, but I also love to mix things up and sing some rock, like Evanescence, or some Blues/Jazz, like Joss Stone. Since I like to sing all sorts of music, my sound is not inspired by one artist, but by a lot of them.

DESCRIBE

YOUR IMPRESSION OF THE LOCAL

MUSIC SCENE.

As far as the local music scene, there are quite a few fun places around town for karaoke. A really nice bistro/tea room called Bistro Paradis will be starting an open mic night in October on Saturday nights, so I'm looking forward to that! The owner, Maria, loves music and wants to have a place for people to come together and share their talents, whether they are singing, playing an instrument, or even reading poetry! For more information, call Bistro Paradis at (239) 598-2221. You can be sure to see me there!

East Naples Nightlife Reviews

ENGLISH PUB by Pam Lazarto

Transatlantic tickets are quite an investment these days. If you are looking for a taste of London without taking time off from work, The English Pub is your best option. Tucked away at 2408 Linwood Ave. in East Naples, The English Pub is a truly authentic British experience. From the moment guests walk in the door, they are transported to England by the award winning dĂŠcor. Some notable features include the red phone booth, a portrait of Winston Churchill and a life-sized knight in armor. The English Pub is the only restaurant in Naples where you can find homemade classics such as Shepherds Pie, Fish 'n' Chips, Bangers & Mash, Liver & Onions, Gammon Steak and Chicken Pot Pie. The entrees can be washed down with a pint of ale (or two) - try Tetley's, Stella Artois, London Pride, Fullers Extra Special Bitter, Guinness, Newcastle Brown Ale, Fosters, Bass, Yuengling, Hobgoblin, Tennents or Old Speckled Hen, all on tap. A full liquor bar is also available. The owner, Derek Bennett, is a fifth generation Publican, from Portsmouth in the South of England. He was educated at the Savoy in London and returned to the family business of pubs, hotels, night clubs and restaurants. The homemade recipes are served by Chef Fred, also a native from across the pond. The fun continues after dinner with live music on the weekends, dinner shows, trivia, a drinking game called 'Flip It' and of course, good conversation. Whether The English Pub is your dinner destination, or if you just want to take advantage of the happy hour Monday-Friday from 47pm and Saturday-Sunday from 12-5pm, you're guaranteed to have a jolly good time. Return for a full English breakfast and unlimited 99 cent Bloody Marys on Sunday mornings from 9am-noon. For more info or reservations, call 775-3727 or visit naplesenglishpub.com.

ALDO’S

Locals already know that Aldo's Ristorante Italiano, at 4820 Davis Blvd, serves the best pizza in town. In March, 2008, Naples Daily News readers gave them the vote for #1 pizza! Thin crust that is crunchy, not dry and a delicious tomato sauce is a huge draw for the regulars. High quality cheese and creative toppings helped to secure their spot. My personal favorite is the Chicken BBQ. However, Aldo's is more than just your favorite neighborhood Italian restaurant. Owners Kelly and Aldo also promote late night crowds, live music, DJs and more. In other words, don't go home after dinner! Aldo's is an insider spot that you are more likely to hear about via friends or myspace promoters. You certainly can't see signs from I 75. Nevertheless, last year, 'Next Door Aldo's' on Friday nights was the 'it' spot. Nearby clubs were suddenly paying attention as techno bumped all night and VIP had to be reserved in advance. Aldo's has currently developed a more relaxed nightlife scene. Popular local group, Little Eddie & the Fat Fingers, plays every Wednesday night from 8pm until close. Thursday nights are hosted by singer, Jen Mack, with live music and a new featured artist or photographer weekly. There is also a wine tasting on the same night for $10 per person. To me, this is the perfect scenario for Aldo's. They have built on their original strengths - great food, drinks and a cozy atmosphere, but still offer entertainment for the younger crowd. Their signature martinis are worth mentioning. You have to try the Chocolate Monkey. It tastes just like a chocolate covered frozen banana and not too sweet! Other favorites include the Carrot Cake, the crisp refreshing Rubyred (fresh ruby grapefruit juice), Chocolate Covered Cherry (straight from the box) or the always popular Cosmo (rasp or blueberry). Aldo's recently hosted a huge Night of the Dead & Famous Halloween party. For a complete schedule of upcoming events, call 659-ALDO (2536) or visit myspace.com/aldosnaples. Advice Column

The

TREASURE CHEST Smokes the Rest

Considering the current state of the job market, I know I should be happy to have a secure position with great benefits. My company, like many others, has been downsizing over the past six months. As this happens, the work load for remaining employees keeps increasing. No additional compensation has been offered and the current climate here makes asking for a raise almost laughable. I used to enjoy my job which has always been challenging, but now it is a constant state of stress, difficult deadlines, and overtime. I know I should be looking, but the last thing I want to do when I get home is to stare at the computer for another second. When do you draw the line? - Slave to the Man

Dear Joey,

Everything you have stated in your question is just the reality of today's world. Times are tough, and everyone is trying to cut costs and save wherever they possibly can. The economy and the stock market are at lows that we have not seen in a long time. The average person is barely making ends meet and, at the same time, probably working more than they ever have before. This does not mean that there isn't a possibility of finding a better job, but it is going to be difficult. You should certainly appreciate having a job with great benefits because a lot of Americans do not have benefits. You may not see the benefits as cash in your pocket, but if something does happen, you will save thousands of dollars or more. Are you willing to take risks for a better life, or do you stay in a position that is not exactly what you were dreaming of, but pays the bills? Remember that the grass is not always greener on the other side. Times are rough now, but they will not be forever. Your hard work probably isn't going unnoticed. A positive attitude in the face of challenges is the perfect opportunity to showcase your leadership ability. With downsizing, there is obviously going to be more work for everyone, and probably without additional compensation. To be a slave, or not to be, you decide. You can either stay with the safety net, or take a risk and hope for a better future. Security is not always guaranteed in life, but staying true to yourself and making proactive decisions can be. - Joey

She Said

by Brooke Herron

He Said

by Jeremey Bingham

Breaking up is hard to do. When a relationship is over, most couples are forced to deal with common annoyances and grief beyond the initial emotional rollercoaster ride of a breakup. This mostly concerns material items, like stealing back your favorite t-shirt, or determining whether to give back expensive jewelry, or head straight to the pawn shop (answer: pawn shop!). Sometimes dividing the mutual assets becomes complicated, especially when dealing with the intangibles such as mutual friends. Who gets to stay friends with whom? Who has to crawl into the friendless and lonely darkness? In a perfect world, we would all be grown-ups and this wouldn't be an issue. In the real world, jealousy and hurt feelings have a way of rearing their ugly heads, regardless of how hard we try to show a brave face of indifference. It's my opinion that you should retain the friendships that you already had when you went into the relationship. However, if your old friends choose your ex over you, you may want to reconsider who you let into your little circle of trust. Now, the tricky part: friends you made as a couple while in the relationship. This especially applies to other couples. The four of you hung out all the time; you were the best of friends, blah, blah, blah. Now, it's over. Who gets 'em? Each situation is different and lends itself to a different scenario: 1. Each break-upee remains friends with the person of the same sex. Pros: You keep a friend! Cons: You may be putting your friend in an awkward position, especially if you ask about your ex. You may also have the privilege of hearing about your ex's new flame. Annoying. 2. Each break-upee remains friends with the person of the opposite sex. Hey, it could happen, and could end even more awkwardly than option number one. Use your imagination. 3. The other couple chooses with Photography by Monique Russ whom to remain friends, and the breakupee has no control. Ouch, if they don't pick you. None of these situations are ideal. I personally hadn't experienced this until recently, so this wasn't an issue in my past relationships. As we get older, almost everyone is coupled up and heading for the altar, so I must assume this will become a more common occurrence. How did my last break-up division of friends end, you ask? In the ultimate betrayal: my friend took the side of my ex, then put the moves on him (I heard he shot her down, take that!). So, I am obviously not the expert in this field and perhaps shouldn't be dispensing advice. Since I can't figure this out, Jeremey is welcome to give it a try.

I'm in favor of letting things happen organically, and allowing people to make up their minds about their allegiances. You can't really force the issue, and the last thing you want is to "choose" one of your mutual friends for "your side", only to find them in a relationship with your former partner six weeks later! Because of the high standards of loyalty to which women hold their friends, when it comes to social entanglements, they are in charge. For instance, the guy who dates your ex-girlfriend's best friend, the guy you like to watch football with so much? That guy is dead to you now. His girlfriend has naturally taken the side of your ex, and he's not risking his relationship for you. So what can be done? Not much. My best advice is to stake your claim early. Figure out who's on your side, and who's expendable. You're in friendship triage mode here. Instead of moping around, you need to get out there and have a good time, and do all the things you couldn't do while you were in a relationship. You need to convince undecided friends that you're a more desirable choice, even if you don't really feel like it. Get out there and reconnect; it'll be better for you in the long run anyway. You'll probably find that you already know where most of your friends stand. There's no rule against retaining mutual friends, but as Brooke notes, you probably don't want to hear about your ex all the time, and vice-versa. Those arrangements don't tend to last, and those "mutual" friends will normally drift into one camp or the other eventually. Another big question albeit one that becomes less and less important the older you get… what about being friends with your ex? Obviously some situations are NOT going to allow for this option. In the interest of keeping the peace, this is worth considering after an appropriate period of time (six months to a year), especially if you live in the same area and have the same circle of friends who get together frequently. In many cases, this is the best option for mutual friends since they don't have to choose sides, but it can be hard to pull off. I would wait until you have some distance from the situation, and preferably a hot new partner. The opposite is to get out there and start meeting people (and not just ones you’re trying to sleep with). Find some new friends, build relationships on your own terms, and maybe all those people who you thought were so important until you broke it off with your ex will just fade away…

Big Bad Voodoo Brothers is a traveling tattoo company specializing

in tattoo parties and events. Rob Howell and Scott Howell make up the tattoo duo on the road. The brothers grew up in Ohio, have been in professional graphic design for twenty years, and have been practicing the fine art of tattooing for the past fifteen. Inspired by other artists and their own love of creating new and interesting designs, Rob and Scott founded BBVB. Using only completely sterile equipment and "right out of the package" needles, they'll come to your next soiree and get you all inked up Loaded with the latest light-weight and almost silent tattoo technology even someone who can't stand the sound of the gun can be at ease. Not a fan of pain? Rob and Scott told Pulse about a mild topical anesthetic they began using to help some people cope, especially when dealing with the larger pieces and more painful areas. After hearing about this cool profession, I was wondering what type of licensing and permits were required for tattoo parties. After much research, I've discovered that you only need to possess an occupational license and a biomedical waste disposal permit. Rob and Scott warn, however, that you should always do your research on the artist's credentials and portfolio before committing to a permanent piece.

FINAL SHOWDOWN NOVEMBER 25TH As this issue hits the stands,

the 2008 Moony Mann Battle of the Bands final stage will be set, and three of the area's best bands will duke it out again this year for $2000 in cash and prizes. Over forty bands registered, and we are now down to the final three! If you are a fan of LIVE music, then you will not want to miss this event. If you have been following the battle, then you know it is not for the small time garage band that just plays on weekends as a hobby. Some of the area's best known working bands have performed in this year's battle, and have eliminated the weekend warriors by bringing out large crowds to vote them into the next round. The process is very simple for the bands bring your fans, play your heart out

and collect the votes! Music from just about every genre has been heard. There have been many stand-out performances by local artists, such as Robyn Schoessel, a soloist who performs original songs and covers as she accompanies herself on acoustic guitar. Another memorable set was by local Reggae band, Deep Roots, who filled the dance floor with their spot-on versions of some classic tunes. Another group that did extremely well was The Buckshot Band, a country music sensation from LaBelle. If you are into LIVE music, The Blue Monkey, located at 7550 Mission Hill Dr on the corner of 951 and Vanderbilt, has been the place to go on Tuesday nights for the past fourteen weeks. Typically three and

sometimes four bands perform in one night. No other venue in the area can make that claim, and no other event is more coveted by local food and beverage business owners. "Tuesday nights in Naples are usually slow for business owners during the summer months, so who wouldn't want an extra 100-200 people eating and drinking in the off season for fourteen weeks? It's just good business," says doorman, Kevin Walsh. The winning band will receive a check for $1000, a $500 gift certificate to Gator Music and a recording package from Ultimate Force Records in Naples valued at $500. The band will also receive the prestigious 2008 Moony Mann Battle of the Bands Championship Trophy along with

NAPLES LOCAL - A SURVIVOR?

Naples' local Ace George Gordon is a competing cast member on "Survivor: Gabon - Earth's Last Eden". Nondisclosure agreements with CBS prevent him from divulging any juicy details or plot twists, but it will be interesting to see how one of Naples' own fares. Will Gordon grab the $1 million prize? He is certainly cast as the villain online, but don't believe the hype. Check out Gordon's photography at myspace.com/gottidedog LAKE KILLARNEY, ORLANDO, FL

40 UNDER 40 PARTY

Every year Gulfshore Business Magazine selects the top "40 Under 40" movers and shakers in the SWFL area and recognizes their achievements in their special September issue. Pulse Magazine attended the awards party at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Estero and had a blast! Aside from all the talented individuals in attendance, Gulfshore Business and title sponsor Oswald Trippe & Co. pulled out all the stops to make this a party to remember. The first thing guests saw upon arrival were two amazing Porsche sports cars in the entrance area. The main room was decorated with huge glass centerpieces filled with skinny glow sticks, and crazy lights on the wall. Big John DJ'd the event from onstage, and kept the energy level high with creative mixes and old favorites. Daniel Fila, renowned graffiti artist and muralist, created a piece with spray paint live on stage. This artwork was later auctioned to raise money for the Children's Museum of Naples. Guests mingled and enjoyed creative cocktails and appetizers while perusing the interactive business displays. The Enigma Dance Crew, stars of MTV's America's Best Dance Crew, performed an energetic routine. At approximately 9pm, NBC2's Kellie Burns stepped up to the podium and began the awards presentation. According to Gulfshore Business, "The young professionals selected for Gulfshore Business' 40 under 40 give us that many more reasons to be proud to live in SWFL. From doctors and lawyers to entrepreneurs and others who are making a name for themselves, these standouts are not only helping their businesses succeed, they are also stepping forward to improve the lives of others." Pulse Magazine would like to extend congratulations to all the winners! Pictures from this event can be seen on pages 38-39.

W

hat exactly is a life coach?

Perspectives

Despite the general term, most people probably have some sort of life coach vision in their head. Perhaps they imagine a literal cheerleader at their side during life's difficult moments‌ Ask for that raise! Stop being such a doormat! Put down the vodka cranberry! In reality, a life coach's function is much more methodical. I had the interesting experience of having a session with Laurie Martin, local life coach and author, to more fully understand the role. Through various visualization techniques and careful questioning, Laurie was able to extract my core values, and help me to see how certain parts of my life were straying from the path that would bring ultimate happiness and fulfillment. Contrary to my previous misconceptions, a life coach isn't just for those whose life is in shambles. As a completely unbiased voice (which is rare in daily life), they bring clarity to a broad range of issues, help define your ultimate goals, and formulate an action plan for achievement. Thanks, Laurie, for taking time out of your busy schedule to speak with Pulse Magazine!

Please provide a brief bio and explain how you became a life coach. We all want to be appreciated,

loved and needed. Growing up with insecurities, I had a pattern of caring more about what my boyfriends thought about me than how I felt. I have learned during my life that I must love myself, appreciate different things about myself, and learn to become my own best friend. I followed my heart, had the courage to leave my corporate vice president position, and I became a certified life coach, yoga instructor, speaker, and author of the book, Smile Across Your Heart, The Process of Building Self-Love.

What general goals do you hope to achieve with each individual? I became a life coach to help others question their fears, negative thinking, perceptions and attitudes, and to release any hurts, disappointments, anger, insecurities and frustrations that blocks them from living a fulfilled life. I am the catalyst for my clients to build PULSE MAGAZINE

LAURIE MARTIN: Life Coach, Author

trust in themselves, and to create an awareness of when they are giving their power away to others. I guide them with steps on how to draw their power back to themselves. I help them to discover what they want and don't want, and to create an action plan on how to move forward with daily accountability. My intention is to help clients learn how to trust their own guidance, and to encourage them to have the courage to move forward. The goals might be asking for a raise, starting their own business, looking for another job, improving upon current relationships, attracting healthy relationships, using positive internal dialogues, releasing past pains, living fully in the present, taking control of their fears and learning how to love themselves.

What formal training / certifications are required? I received a

certification from an accredited program through the ICF, International Coach Federation. There are many people who adopt the title "coach" without a formal coaching training program.

Describe the typical session with a client. My

philosophy is that each client is treated as a capable person who has insight, and I'm the catalyst who supports and inspires them into their own innate wisdom. A coaching client for me is someone who feels they are responsible for their actions and thoughts, and believes they have choices in this world. A prospective client contacts me either through email or my business line, (239) 398-5979. Clients are from all over the United States, and sessions take place over the telephone. I find that clients are more relaxed having sessions from the comfort of their own home without anyone staring at them. If a client is local in Naples, they do have the option of having a face-to-face session. Once a client and I agree on the number of sessions, whether it's one or a package of sessions, I email them a coaching agreement. The agreement has questions such as, "What are your three main goals for our session? What are your main ways of learning are you a visual person or do you prefer learning by sensing?" I ask the client to identify which topic they would like to discuss first. If they don't know, I have a few questions that will help them identify the areas they want to improve upon. I listen intently to their language and to their voice inflection, and ask very specific questions to help them discover a new perspective, to become aware of any negative beliefs, and to create an action plan. I encourage them to get out of their analytical minds and into their hearts because that is where truth lives. I use a variety of techniques, including visualizations, using a scale to rate their feelings, or asking them to imagine different scenarios and how they feel about them.

With regular clients, how do you set boundaries to maintain a professional relationship and not become a friend figure?

This is such a great question because creating boundaries is healthy in many career roles. If I'm asked a personal question, I reply that the question is perLaurieM@SmileAcrossYourHeart.com sonal, and that I do not feel comfortable discussing it. I will then ask them if their intention is on coaching or something

(239) 398-5979

else. I recently had someone respond to that question by saying, "both", and I told him that I wouldn't be the best coach for him.

Where can people sign up for your motivational workshops and what are some of the topics? My

workshops and telephone classes encompass subjects such as, Live Life Lighter, Increase Your Manifesting Skills, and Fight for Your Truth- Speak and Be Your Divinity! To review, register for classes or read testimonials, visit my website www.smileacrossyourheart.com

What inspired your book, Smile Across Your Heart, The Process of Building SelfLove? I knew for many years that I

would write a book. The day that I sat down at my computer to write, I typed away for about four hours straight! My fingers couldn't move fast enough to keep up with the insights that I was eager to share. I worked on the book for about five years, and then was lucky enough to have a publisher sign a contract with me. The book came out last year, and it's in two bookstores, Borders, and Barnes and Noble. I'm very excited that the book is helping so many people!

You are also a yoga teacher. How does yoga tie in with finding your inner peace and happiness?

Yoga is another limb to balance and wellness. I believe that peace and harmony come from responsible and conscious living, a balance of the spiritual, emotional, and physical parts of life. What we eat, and what we put on our body is very important. Eating healthy organic foods and using organic chemical- free shampoos and skin lotions is as important as chiropractic care, yoga, walking, reading uplifting books, and communing with nature and spirit. While I was in corporate America, yoga was a reprieve for me since it helped me to reduce stress and regain balance, with amazing physical and mental results!

The Naples Women's Club is a great community organization. What is your involvement with it?

I'm involved with a group within the organization that is empowering women one by one. This group raises money towards a scholarship for a woman living in the Naples Shelter for Abused Women and Children.

Do you have any final comments for Pulse readers? Hiring a life coach is part of the complete personal bal-

ance and wellness package. Just as you go to a gym to work on your physical body, a life coach helps you to take care of yourself mentally and emotionally. I can honestly tell you that true fulfillment is not feeling owned by a job or anyone. It's having the courage to love yourself enough, and to trust yourself enough, to follow your heart and to BELIEVE in yourself. Believe that you will always be okay, and that you are worthy of healthy encouraging relationships, environments and careers! Email Life Questions to pulsenaples@gmail.com and Lauries’s answers will be printed in the next issue.
