FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK

It's easy for people to make New Year's resolutions and even easier to break them a week later. This year Pulse has a few resolutions for the City of Naples. First, let's all make an extra effort to keep our beaches clean! It might not seem like a big deal when you flick a cigarette butt on the sand or leave a sandwich bag behind. Unfortunately, the accumulation takes its toll over time. The Perspectives column in this issue serves as a reminder that it is everyone's responsibility to keep Naples beautiful. Some exciting new faces entered the nightlife arena in 2007, such as Bliss Sushi, Ultra Lounge & Vision Nightclub, Wahoo's Bar & Grill and the Boston Beer Garden. Let's keep that trend going into the New Year! Ultra Naples will be ringing in 2008 with their grand opening and getting us started on the right foot. The more casual establishments do have their place, but it is nice to have a variety of convenient options no matter what part of town you live in. Although Pulse covers much more than just nightlife these days, promoting nocturnal activities is still one of our biggest objectives. Young Professionals of Naples received a facelift about six months ago, and it will benefit everyone to keep the networking going strong in the New Year. With this and other dynamic organizations meeting regularly, there are many opportunities to get out there and meet new people. YP is more than just happy hours;

~Pam & Kelly~

FEATURED ARTIST

hen I was a child, my parents entered me into many of the city sponsored art contests in Boca Raton & Delray Beach, Florida, where I grew up. I also attended various art workshops at the Boca Raton Art Museum. I have always had an artistic side and would often spend my free time coming up with projects to beautify my world. One project was to take tiny pictures that I cut out of magazines and cover my entire ceiling in my bedroom, including the ceiling fan that hung above my bed. As a young adult, I sought out other artist types. I mostly established myself in the Fort Lauderdale and Miami underground art scene. Luckily for me, many of my acquaintances were quite active in organizing and participating in collaborative events, many of which I attended and participated in myself. After spending some time learning from others how to organize and promote underground art shows, I discovered I had quite the knack for putting together similar events, and did so for years in my home town of Boca Raton. In college, I took many art classes, but the courses varied in disciplines. I basically took classes based on my particular interests at the time and less as part of my degree requirement. I decided it would benefit me to attend a course to train to be a nail technician. I graduated and worked in the field for about three months before I did nails for an architectural illustrator. We got along famously and she invited me to try architectural illustration by working for her in her studio. I accepted the challenge and have been doing architectural illustration as my main career ever since the early 1990s. In 2003, I moved to Phoenix, AZ where I spent much of my time painting large-scale abstract pieces in bold bright colors. I threw a few events out there, but was eventually brought back to the Naples area to continue to pursue my illustration career. I currently freelance as an architectural illustrator and pursue art shows in my free time. My art focus turned to celebrity depictions when I attended a wedding in Vegas with my friend, Christen. We were up all night gambling and meeting all sorts of crazy characters and sustaining our lack of sleep by drinking LOTS, let me repeat, LOTS of Rockstar energy

by Cindy-jo Dietz drink. I drank so much of that stuff, I've never had another drop since. We partied like rock stars the entire trip and felt dead on the way back home. Somehow during the conversation on the plane, it became a joke that I should start a series of art based on our trip. A few months later, I picked up my tools and started to work. My latest art project started out as a joke between friends, but this series has gone over better with folks than any other concept I have pursued. I typically work with acrylic on canvas in large scale, using bold colors and an abstract subject matter. This style is an acquired taste, and not meant for the masses. You have to be into a certain type of art to like what I was doing. The "Rock Remembered" charcoal and paste really appeals to my illustrator side. Drawing comes more naturally to me than painting, and I'm beginning to think that is where my true talent lies. I typically enjoy working in public and will often sit in cafĂŠs and sketch. Total strangers come up to me and tell me these elaborate stories about where they were, how they felt, and what they remember when they first saw or heard the particular star I'm working on. It's inspiring when someone gives you a piece of themselves like that. Until this series, I didn't realize the extent that rock stars and their music are a part of people's lives. Music and musicians define a time in history and a time in each person's life. We take those memories with us everywhere we go. So far, the series has included a total of twenty deceased rock icons including Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash, Marvin Gaye, Frank Zappa, Nico/Velvet Underground, Syd Barrett/Pink Floyd, Jim Morrison/Doors, John Lennon/Beatles, Kurt Cobain/Nirvana, Sid Vicious/Sex Pistols, Joe Meek, Jeff Buckley, Rick James, Elvis Presley, Brian Jones/Rolling Stones, Freddie Mercury/Queen, Jerry Garcia/Grateful Dead, Jimmy Hendrix, Ray Charles and Bob Marley. I've been working on Rock Remembered since January 2007. It's kind of weird, because until that time, I would have told you that I couldn't sketch a portrait to save my life. I've never worked in charcoal or pastel, yet somehow the transition was completely smooth and seemed absolutely natural. In fact, I'd prefer to work in this medium/style over my abstract painting any day.

"Rock Remembered" (pieces available for purchase) On display from 1/29 - 2/25 at Bayshore Coffee Co, 3570 Bayshore Dr 775-5676 www.bayshorecoffee.com As far as the art scene in Naples, it is what it is. We are a predominantly seasonal community with many seasonal residents. It doesn't surprise me that most of our events are held during the time that supports that influx of people each year. On the other hand, there seem to be more and more great artisans moving to this area on a permanent basis. Naples is a steadily growing community and along with that growth will come more opportunities for artists to show their work. I'm very excited to see what the next ten years will bring to our area. Tourists come here because of our sunshine and sandy shores, so beach scene "Floridian" art totally has its place. Many tourists want to take a little of that home with them when they leave by buying paintings that remind them of the great time they had here. Why not? Being a coastal community, many people like to design their living spaces or work spaces around our tropical climate, bringing the outside in. Again, why not? There will always be a market for typical "Floridian" beach scene art. Being a successful artist is not only about being good at your craft, you need to advertise, advertise and advertise. Get out there and meet people. You can be the greatest of the great, but if your art is only seen by those who happen to be in your living room, no one will ever get to appreciate your craft. The internet is a fantastic way to promote yourself. Many of the local cafĂŠs and coffee shops support local art. Get out there and get your artwork up on their walls. It never hurts to ask a local business if they wouldn't mind putting your pieces on display. It not only helps you to get exposure, but customers get to look at something other than white walls. With a growing population, a more diverse group of people are making Naples and the surrounding areas home, so of course the demand for alternate styles will increase. What a wonderful thing. Not only will you see the general large scale art shows continue to prosper, but I think the opportunities for up and coming artists to show at more underground events will occur more frequently. I'm sure that as we become a more urbanized area, there will be a shift that will embrace the off-the-beaten-path art styles. My work can be purchased on T-shirts online at artlifecollective.com. Around the World in Food

lease place your seat backs up and turn off all electronic devices as we prepare for take-off on your palate-pleasing trip to sample some of the best restaurants from around the world. Wouldn't that be great? We aren't really going to fly around the world today, but we are going to highlight some of the best cuisine styles from around the globe created by Naples' top chefs. Just like the value of foreign currency, these restaurants have a range of affordability. It's going to be a stomach satisfying trip, so let's go.

** BEST ITALIAN: CAMPIELLO ** NOTABLES: NOODLES ITALIAN CAFE, SALE E PEPE (MARCO), NAPLES TOMATO, PAZZO!, DINO’S RESTAURANT With veal, homemade pasta and a stunning atmosphere, Campiellos has it all. The menu bears a definite Tuscan resemblance, and Chef Wicklander offers such mouth-watering dishes as baked snapper served with artichokes and potato purée, along with plenty of unique homemade pasta dishes. Enjoy live entertainment while you take a seat in the outdoor courtyard and prepare your taste buds for the Italian bounty that awaits.

**BEST JAPANESE/SUSHI: DARUMA JAPANESE STEAK HOUSE ** NOTABLES: BLU SUSHI, FUJIYAMA STEAK HOUSE, SUSHI-THAI I hope you have been practicing your chopstick skills because they're going to be working overtime at DaRuMa. Located on Vanderbilt Beach Road close to the beach, DaRuMa offers sumptuous Japanese cuisine that is fun, entertaining and delicious. You will receive your choice of a traditional table or Teppan-style cooking at your table by wonderfully charismatic and expertly trained chefs. You can select PULSE MAGAZINE

from a wide variety of classic Japanese favorites and innovative combinations. This establishment also boasts a plush sushi lounge where you can sit close enough to watch the chefs prepare your favorite roll.

** BEST CHINESE: CHARLIE CHIANG'S ** (DOUBLETREE GUEST SUITES) NOTABLES: P.F. CHANGS, SHING LONG GOURMET CHINESE Charlie Chiang's takes Chinese food to another level. They offer a large menu with all of the traditional names such as General Tso's Chicken and Crab Rangoon, but they really shine with specialty dishes such as Sweet-Soy Glazed Short Ribs, Creamy Sesame Jumbo Shrimp and Lamb of Two Seasons. Located on the Cocohatchee River in North Naples, Charlie Chiang's offers a chic atmosphere, which includes a full sushi-bar and a romantic outdoor seating area that overlooks the river.

** BEST CARIBBEAN: TOMMY BAHAMA'S TROPICAL CAFE ** NOTABLES: YABBA ISLAND GRILL, PARROT KEY CARIBBEAN GRILL (FT. MYERS BEACH) If you're looking for island time, then button up your flowered shirt because Tommy Bahama's Tropical Café serves it up, mon. This laid-back Olde Naples destination has, as you would expect, a definite tropical mood. The Caribbean décor is bright, marked by all sorts of tropical plants and artwork. Tommy Bahama's serves a medley of rather spicy American and Jamaican cuisine, including jerk chicken. Many patrons fall in love with the atmosphere and end up spending a good part of their day sipping the many frozen trop-

ical libations and listening to live music covering the likes of Jimmy Buffett, Bob Marley and Van Morrison.

** BEST FRENCH: BLEU PROVENCE **

NOTABLES: BAMBOO CAFÉ, CHARDONNAY NOUVEAU, COTE D'AZUR, MARIE-MICHELLE Viva La France! Bleu Provence is closer to the Gulf of Mexico than the French Rivera, but you'll be swept away to the streets of Paris with one taste of their flavorful food,. Chef Lysielle is a master at combining the freshest ingredients to create beautiful and delicious dishes. They have a massive wine cellar that features over 1700 different wines. Try Bleu Provence, where the French countryside is just a sip of wine and a bite of heaven away.

** BEST MEXICAN: MESON OLÉ **

NOTABLES: FLACOS, CILANTRO TAMALES Mi casa es su casa… and that's exactly how Meson Olé treats their patrons. This really is a special place. The food is simply amazing and the prices are reasonable. I've been to Meson Olé so many times that they know me by name and usually surprise me with a free appetizer. The beef Chimichangas have strips of marinated steak that keep me coming back time and again. Next time you get a craving for some south-of-the-border cuisine or the best Margarita this side of Tijuana, try Meson Olé.

** BEST AMERICAN: ROY'S HAWAIIAN FUSION ** NOTABLES: ANDRE'S STEAKHOUSE, CHOP'S, CHEEBURGER CHEEBURGER, THE RIVERWALK, ZOË'S Aloha! Roy's Hawaiian Fusion is a jewel in the Naples dining scene. They prepare food with a mix of bold Asian spices and European sauces, focusing on

BLISS SUSHI & ULTRALOUNGE and VISION NIGHTCLUB

Some of you might have preconceived notions based on your past experiences at this familiar red brick building at 11901 Tamiami Trail N. A lot of hard work and late nights went into preparing Bliss Sushi & UltraLounge and Vision Nightclub for the public. Let us be the first to assure you, this renovation is something you'll need to see to believe! On December 17, Pulse Magazine sat down with Scott Dantuono of Main Event Promotions to get the inside info.

Owner, Scott Dantuono

PLEASE GIVE US SOME BACKGROUND ON MAIN EVENT PROMOTIONS AND HOW YOU GOT INVOLVED WITH THE INDUSTRY.

I started as a DJ in 1986 doing house parties and special events. From there, my work evolved into a touring DJ playing in locations such as Planet Mall in Costa Rica and in all the major metropolitan cities. In 1994, I opened up Future Sounds, a disc jockey store supplying all the local jocks with equipment, vinyl records and import CDs. I opened my second location in Fort Myers in 1998 and sold the business in 2002. I've always had an entrepreneurial side and a love for the music industry. Main Event Promotions was founded in 2002 and I began throwing my first parties at Hurricane Jane's here in Naples and Aja Lounge in Bonita Springs. The company also promoted Café Roma, Sanibel Steakhouse, Envie Lounge and Noodles Café, to name a few. Some might remember our Ibiza Beach parties and Saturday night special events. This was the birth of the high energy dance club scene locally. Working in the restaurant/nightclub business, I've learned a lot about catering to the wide needs of different demographics. The restaurant to nightclub transition requires an understanding of music preferences and program-

NAPLES?

This is the first entertainment complex in the city of Naples. Bliss Sushi & Ultra Lounge is totally separate from Vision Nightclub. The Bliss Sushi kitchen is managed by Chef William, formerly of Fujiyama's, who serves an array of sushi dishes from sashimi to specialty rolls. Before or after dinner, guests can relax in the UltraLounge while sipping on a martini or glass of wine from our extensive list. The intimate atmosphere combined with trendy beats sets the stage for good conversation. Vision Nightclub, on the other hand, has two separate rooms including an outside terrace and the main dance floor. This is where the party starts. Vision has a big city feel with high tech sound and lighting, making you feel as though you've left SWFL behind.

Currently, we offer Ladies Night on Thursdays, Latin Night on Fridays and Main Event hosts Saturday's biggest dance party. Vision Nightclub will be hosting some of the biggest special events with national and international touring DJs. Vision always offers three rooms with different styles of music catering to everyone's preference. I have lived in Naples for thirty years and understand how this town has evolved. I realize that not everyone can afford bottle service and $10 drinks on an average night out. There will always be something for every budget at our parties, so don't ever feel like there is a pretentious vibe. One of my main goals in the entertainment business is always to be creative and to think outside the box. Ask Joey

Advice Co lumn

Dear Joey,

Photography by Robert Hayman

My significant other went out for a "Girl’s Night" with all her friends last weekend. I assumed that she would be home after the bars closed, but I was woken up by her stumbling in at 4 am. She was totally wasted and I was very annoyed, but too tired to argue. The next day she claimed not to remember anything, including who dropped her off. She says that she was drugged! Is this a possibility in Naples, FL or do you think she is just covering up for a night that I wouldn't approve of?

- Concerned for More than One Reason Dear Concerned for More than One Reaon,

Everyone deserves a night on the town once in a while. Most people go out to unleash their stress and socialize. Sometimes being in a serious committed relationship enables you to really let loose the nights that you do go out solo. It doesn't seem as though you have a problem with that. The question is did your significant other go past her limit, or was it out of her hands due to somebody putting something in her drink? It is totally possible for that to happen, especially in a crowded bar when people are drinking and distracted. Does your girlfriend go out often and does she always come home that late? When she drinks, does she usually remember what happened during the night? I assume you know your girlfriend's typical party habits. Do you think she is trying to cover up and hide something from you? Trust your intuition, but give her the benefit of the doubt. At this point, it is too late to prove if she was drugged or not, but it is still a very serious and criminal matter. If anybody out there feels that they were drugged, my suggestion is to go to the hospital and get tested. Rohypnol, "roofies", was the first drug labeled a date rape drug, but there are several others. Warning signs are feeling more intoxicated than usual, waking up feeling fuzzy and unable to remember what happened, or thinking that someone took advantage of you. This is a situation that nobody ever wants to be in. Its not a joke because it's PULSE MAGAZINE

Valentine's Day is rapidly approaching, and the stores are putting out the red hearts laden with ooey gooey chocolates and stuffed animals who love us 'beary much." Those of us who don't have sweeties with firm instructions to get us something sparkly are starting to get nervous, aren't we? I'm not sure what it is about this stupid day that gets us all aflutter, but it's definitely something. I know, I know, Hallmark has brainwashed us into believing that we desperately need, not want, but need cards, teddy bears, diamonds, and, of course, chocolate on February 14th. If we don't get them… we're losers. That doesn't change the fact that it's, well, true. I know that my Valentine's Days have run the proverbial gamut from fabulous to freakin' terrible, and almost everything in between. In fact, I remember once getting a very cute teddy bear from some oddlynamed boy that made me giggle with glee. I also remember a friend of mine and me exchanging sympathy baskets of chocolate when we were both sans boyfriends. In high school, when I was not "dating" some random preppy boy, it was affectionately known as "Vomit Day." We thought we were so clever too, very gothically, by buying the darkest red roses and letting them die to signify such a horrible, stupid, god-awful tradition. Well, those of us who didn't have boyfriends that year anyway. When you're with someone, it's a pretty magical time of year. You're celebrating love. How awesome is that? It's pretty cool, isn't it? St. Valentine came down from, er… wherever and, uh… shot us with bows or something? I'm a bit fuzzy on the whole mythology behind it, but dang, it's nifty. It's also an insanely good excuse to indulge in cream-filled chocolate, but that's a whole other story. I guess whoever decides the holidays realized that we needed something to stick between New Years' and Easter, so they gave us this. Frankly, it's a blessing and a curse, depending Photography by Robert Hayman on your current state of dating. If you're single, it's depressing. You'll always be alone, so you might as well get your allotted ten cats and subscription to the TV Guide and give up now. There are some things that can help you through this difficult time. Ice cream is a Godsend. Horror movies where lovers are killed will be another balm to your aching soul. You can always see the fear on men's faces as they stop into the store to snatch up last-minute flowers and candy, or the confident smile of a guy who's got a red velvet box in his breast pocket. I know it's not really fair. We can get you socks for V-Day and it's okay, but God forbid you don't pony up something good; that translates to no nookie for you on the night of holy nookie. Unfortunately, boys, that's just something you're going to have to live with because V-Day is definitely a chick holiday. You get Superbowl Sunday, and we get Valentines Day. I think it's fair. Being single on Valentine's Day

I'm actually onboard with a moratorium on dumping between December and March. There's a lot of effort put forth during that period by both partners, and unless we scream obscenities at your Mom over the Christmas goose, we should be immune for a while and vice versa. If you're going to do some dumping, do it before anyone has picked out Christmas gifts. I also think bringing back grade-school valentines for everyone is a good idea. You did forget the most important decision… who gets the big special one in the pack? Always a big move; do you go best friend or that girl you have a crush on? You were so close at the beginning with respect to Hallmark brainwashing us, but you spun out fast into the flowers and candy nonsense that you admit fills women's heads this time of year. A proper historical perspective won't help, but let's have one anyway. Saint Valentine of Terni and Saint Valentine of Rome (whom scholars believe were likely the same person) were martyred around 200-260 AD in Rome for refusing to forsake Christianity. That's the nice way of putting it. The correct way would be that the Emperor ordered them beaten with rocks and violently beheaded because they didn't dig his Pagan religion. Not a very romantic way to go. In typical fashion, as Christianity slowly overtook Paganism as the predominant religion in Europe, the feast of Lupercalia, a traditional Pagan fertility rite held February 15, was co-opted by the Church into a celebration of love. Incidentally, Lupercalia wasn't a romantic holiday either, it was more focused on sex (which sounds right up a modern guys' alley) and child-rearing (maybe not so much). Geoffrey Chaucer made the first connection between the erstwhile St. Valentine and romantic love. It became a commercial juggernaut in the mid 1800s' when Victorian Society was going nuts over greeting cards, and the diamond companies got onboard in the 80's. The problem with Valentines Day is that there's really nothing in it for guys beyond the possibility of seeing some decent lingerie. It comes right after Christmas, making two wallet-crushing expenditures within forty-two days. Woe is the man who has his sweetheart's birthday in January and an anniversary in mid-March. Why, as in so many other aspects of our society, are we judged on V-day by how much we spend? Did you know that the price of a dozen roses is 300% higher in the week of Valentines Day than any other time of year? Why would any sane couple subject themselves to a holiday where, after all the emotion and expenditure of the Christmas season, you're supposed to come up with ONE MORE original, thoughtful gift idea that represents your undying love? Consider what single men do for Valentines Day. In my experience, it's really one of two things; either the holiday barely registers in your consciousness and you do nothing different-

Life in the Jungle

My family moved to Naples when I was five. I grew up here and am a graduate of Naples High School. When I was 19, I began traveling in Latin America and fell in love with the region, and I'm still taking trips there at age 24. When I was traveling through Bolivia, I met someone who had heard about Inti Wara Yassi. I went there with the plan of visiting for two weeks, but ended up staying for five months. I would have stayed there longer if I had had the money. Inti Wara Yassi is an animal refuge funded mainly through donations. They pay volunteers $6 a day which covers the cost of living and also for the animals. One objective of the refuge is to rehabilitate wounded animals. If the animals cannot be released, the Inti Wara Yassi gives them the best life that they can have. It's common for monkeys to be released, as well as some cats, although that's less common. The other objective is to collect endangered animals. Bolivia has a large black market for animals, so some of the resident animals come from there. The founder of the organization does political work with Bolivians, such as marches, to try to improve the rules and regulations for environmental protection and to raise awareness of the importance of the rainforest. The animals that are brought to the Inti Wara Yassi are usually monkeys, pumas, jaguars, ocelots, and birds. I worked with three by Mike Razzano jaguars, and with howler and capuchin monkeys. Of course, there Interview by Stephanie Leutert are always risks, for example, when taking the big cats out on walks. We are more hands-on, and take more chances. The jaguars are massive animals and sometimes don't know their own strength! It would be okay if they were playing with another jaguar, but it's very different when they're playing with you. I did get a few scratches, but nothing serious. There is more freedom in the refuge because there aren't lawsuits like there are in the States. I believe that we have to take some chances to get these animals ready to be released. There are an infinite number of rewards for being at Inti Wara Yassi. You not only get different perspectives, but you have to overcome the challenges of being an American in a foreign country and adapting to another culture. There's also the opportunity to meet interesting travelers from all over the world. I always have a hard time coming home, finding it more difficult to re-adapt to life back in Naples than it is to adapt to life at the refuge. I'm looking forward to returning there in late January. This has definitely been my most exciting, rewarding, and favorite traveling experience so far. To learn more or donate, log onto IntiWaraYassi.com or contact me at MikeRazzano31@gmail or (239) 821-8707.

Local Music

The first time the Overtone Archive appeared in Pulse was for a review of their very first show. They packed and rocked the Tavern. Since then, TOA has been working hard, playing live shows and recording an album. It's been only seven months since that first public appearance, yet TOA has racked up ten or more shows and written about twenty-four original songs. With a release due out in early 2008, an EP aptly named "The Less is More Sessions", and a slew of out-of-town shows booked, TOA has hit stride. "We've been really lucky to be so well received," says singer Mouser. If

New Talent Discovered at the Country Spot by Bobby Lee Miller

As owner of BMD Records, I have been looking for a fresh face, voice and look for the country music world. Rodger, owner of The Country Spot, called me one evening and said, "Robert, you need to come and see this guy that has been singing karaoke here on Wednesdays. I think he might be just the one you've been looking for." So that Wednesday in October, my wife Martie and I went to the club. The first song Trevor James sang blew me away, BUT, it takes more than just one song to convince this old bird that a guy's worth investing in. So he sang again and again, each time nailing down the tones and melodies that makes a true star. Ladies and gentlemen, “let me introduce to you, Mr. Trevor James! Trevor James signed a five year recording contract with BMD Records. We are working with Kevin Post, who is Terri Clark's lead guitarist and band leader, to produce the CD after recording it here at the studio. Terri Clark's band will be playing the music for the songs. The first music video will start shooting in January and we are looking for extras. If you are interested, please go to trevorjamescountry.com for an application. The lucky person hired for the video will be driving a Ferrari F436 sports car. Oh yes, it just doesn't get any better than that. Wait, yes it does, because there will also be a Bentley on set driven by another lucky individual hired for the video. We are looking for about fifteen ladies for this shoot. So get online and get your application filled out. Keep your eyes and ears open because you will be hearing a great deal from Trevor James in the near future!

American IdoL Hopeful: Sarah Ryan

by Moony Mann

On an unusually warm December day, I had the pleasure of sitting down with local singer Sarah Ryan to get some information about her experience as a 2008 American Idol hopeful. I met Sarah at one of her favorite local restaurants, and over the course of our luncheon interview, I got the impression that although Sarah's AI experience had ended after several performances at the Miami tryouts, she had drawn on her experiences with the process. She is very optimistic about her next attempt at the popular TV show, and also about her career in the entertainment industry. As a local musician, I have worked with Sarah at various venues around the area, and on many occasions I have heard people comment after her performance that Sarah should try out. It seemed to be the next logical step in Sarah's path as an entertainer, and was no surprise to us who supported Sarah through the process to learn that she was called back to perform for the AI judges a total of four times. One has to wonder about the selection process that let a talent like Sarah Ryan get away.

MM: Tell us about your American Idol experience and give us a little insight about the selection process. SR: It began with instructions from the official AI website informing "hopefuls" that the selection process would start at 6am in Miami. I went to the tryout location with two of my friends who were auditioning. We left Naples at midnight and arrived to find ourselves among the first hundred or so that would be spending the night on the front steps of the American Airlines Arena. The mood of the waiting crowd of contestants was festive and electric as people were singing and dancing all around. The AI officials opened the entry doors at sunrise, and as we began to move forward into the arena, I turned around and looked at the line behind me… there were about fifteen thousand people! Thank God, I got there when I did! I entered the arena and received my official contestant ticket and then went to South Beach for breakfast. The following day we arrived at the arena in anticipation of the actual performances and found ourselves about eleven thousand people back from the spot we were the first day… in the rain. Ryan Seacreast rode by us in a golf cart several times, cheering and pumping up the crowd to keep everyone's spirits up. After about an hour of waiting and moving forward inch by inch, we made it inside and had a little complementary snack. The producers of the TV show asked us to stay positive and "peppy" for the cameras, but I took a little nap as I waited. The AI officials separated the contestants into groups of four and the performances began. Each group of four was instructed to approach the judges who were seated at several tables. Behind the judges' tables, there were two doors marked "winner" and "non-winner." My group was called at one o'clock. I could see terror in the eyes of some of the other people as we heard singers belting it out from across the arena. My friend, Nina Vega, who had won the Pepsi Challenge talent contest in Bonita Springs just a few months earlier, was the first to sing in my group. After all four members of my group had performed, we were told to line up and the judges thanked us for coming out and said that I was the only one advancing. I almost died…my thoughts went immediately to "What about my friend? She has to stay!" I had mixed emotions as I watched Nina walk away. At the same time, I was hit with the realization that I was advancing. I received a "Golden Ticket" and the crowd cheered for me. At this point, I was crying as I was trying to read and sign some official paperwork. I couldn't believe it was happening! It would be a whole month before I would return for the second audition. I was told that I could not talk about the outcome during this time. I was also informed that I was one of about one hundred people to advance from a crowd of over fifteen thousand. A month later, I returned to Miami to meet with show producers and the other contestants to perform again. I brought a good friend with me for support. The process was a little different this time as we were divided into two groups of fifty. We were told that we would all have to sing the same song. The AI officials played the song a few times for us, then gave us

a lyric sheet and let us rehearse for a while. The selection process moved quickly and people were "nixed" in rapid succession. It was very intimidating. After my fourth audition, I was politely told by one of the judges, "Maybe next year, Sarah!" I immediately found myself in front of a camera saying "Oh, well, what are you gonna do…?" I walked back through the waiting crowd of contestants reflecting upon my experience. It was interesting to see who they actually selected to move on. MM: Will you try out for AI next time? SR: Sure! I'm wiser about the process now. MM: Do you have any advice for future AI hopefuls? SR: It's going to be a long day, so endurance plays a major role. Remember that not only are they looking for a talented singer, they are looking for someone who will look good on the TV show. Try to be different. MM: What have you been up to since the American Idol auditions? SR: I needed to be just me again and I wanted to have some weekends off, so I took a break from performing out. This season I will be doing limited private engagements at a few country clubs and I will also perform at the Bonita Springs Winter Festival. I'll also be continuing my work with my vocal coach CC Bronson. MM: We sure miss you coming out to sit in with the Moony Mann Band. You know you are welcome anytime. SR: Thank you. Tell the boys I said hello and that I might pop in soon to sing a song or two. If you get the chance to hear Sarah Ryan's soulful and sultry voice, you will probably wonder why she wasn't selected. American Idol’s loss is our gain! I encourage you to patronize local establishments that feature LIVE music entertainment. You just might run into Sarah Ryan before she moves on to bigger and better things. PULSE MAGAZINE

It’s no secret that how we feel about ourselves is largely influenced by what we look like. Two of the quickest and best ways to improve your physical appearance and self-image is intense cardio exercises. While the intensity of your cardio workout does not affect how many calories you burn during a run or bike ride of a specific distance, it does affect how many calories you continue to burn afterwards. The exercises we are talking about today are to burn unwanted midsection fat cells. Let’s face it; women love a great six pack. For that matter, a photogenic stomach is a must for all the ladies.

(1.) Tennis is a great way to work these core muscles by swinging the racket, serving up the ball, twisting, rushing the net, and back peddling to chase that deep ball gets the attention of your entire body. It’s a great way to laugh as well. (2.) When you are at Gold’s Gym, ask to use a pair of boxing gloves. Get in the ring and hit away your frustrations. For starters, try 5 / 30 second rounds. Think of your ex. Increase your speed and willingness to knock him or her out. This is guaranteed to work your shoulders, hips, abs, arms and brain. Kick it up a notch and ask Les for lessons.

(3.) My favorite, the Stairmaster… try to work your way up to 110 floors in 20 minutes on the aerobic setting. Your butt will love ya. (4.) The Seated Rowing machine using your legs, arms and back is a great way to train without the wear and tear on your knees and ankles from running

(5.) My least favorite, running. If you must run, go ahead, but I suggest doing it on the beach where it’s flat, less stress on your joints. Run at 80% max for as long as you can, walk for five minutes and repeat. A great way to exercise at a higher intensity is interval training.

Not only does interval training allow you improve your cardiovascular fitness, it’s also more effective than continuous exercise for increasing your post workout metabolic rate. That’s the best way to improve your physical appearance and self image. Remember to fool your body. Do a different cardio exercise every time. Keep changing it up so your body never gets too comfortable.

Training Tip: When to

squeeze the muscle? The greatest demand on a muscle is when the weight is at a right angle to the limb moving it, not at the end of the move when the muscle is at its shortest length. It is at this point that the muscle has the greatest contractile proteins and thus having the greatest effect. Squeeze it and visualize your muscle connection at the midway point.

Laugh your ass off. Studies have shown that laughing greatly reduces stress and brings you closer to friends and family. Take photos to look back on the great moments. Good times become great times when you are laughing!

Wahoo’s Bar & Grill

Wahoo’s Bar & Grill has been open for only six months, but in that time they have successfully differentiated themselves from the other restaurants and bars in town. That is no easy task in a city with over 500 restaurants! How do they do it? Wahoo’s success story starts with their convenient location at 210 Tamiami Trail N between 2nd and 4th Ave N. They have all the 41 traffic without the 5th Ave prices. The Aussie décor is an original theme and sets the stage for a casual, fun atmosphere. Pulse has visited Wahoo’s for many occasions… football games, happy hour, dinner, and also to see and hear local favorites, such as Little Eddie & the Fat Fingers, and Sarah Ryan. Wahoo’s offers live entertainment almost every night. What people might not realize is that Wahoo’s has a full-service kitchen serving more upscale menu items than the usual bar snacks. Of course, they do offer pub fare such as Nachos and Buffalo Wings, but you can also order Calamari and the best Seared Ahi Tuna that I have had in Naples. Other special entrees include the Seafood Salad, Duck with Wild Rice, and Grouper with Clams & Mussels. S WEET L IBERT

I

guess I can be considered a rare breed in Naples since I am a native-born Neapolitan. I can honestly say that I've seen a lot of changes in this town. My parents moved to Naples in the mid-70's when the town was a small gulf-coastal secret. Growing up in Naples when I did was great! There wasn't nearly the amount of politics or bureaucracy that kids today are forced to deal with. However, when I was younger there wasn't nearly as much to do as there is today. One of the reasons my parents were lured to Naples was to enjoy the beautiful and tranquil waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Naturally I grew up on the water and, as they say, the rest is history. When I was a teenager and saw Sweet Liberty for the first time, I said to my father that someday I wanted to captain that boat. I made sailing my life. I started working as crew on sailboats in 1998 for a similar company to Sweet Liberty which operated out of Marco Island. Then I set my sights on becoming a Captain. Obtaining a Captains license is much like a pilot's license. You must first accumulate time at sea before you're eligible to sit for the US Coast Guard exam. The license I hold to operate Sweet Liberty is a Masters Captain's License of 100 gross tons with a sailing endorsement. There are 720 days at sea required for the Masters Captain's license, plus another 365 days of sailing time for the sail endorsement. Needless to say, it took me many years to accumulate the time. After achieving that goal, I went to the American Sailing Association, which is very well known and highly regarded in the sailing community. I obtained my sailing instructor's license which includes coastal and offshore cruising, navigation, along with bareboat certifications. On a more personal level, my love for the water doesn't stop there. At the end of my work day when I walk off the Sweet Liberty, I come home to my personal boat. For the most part, I've been living aboard sailboats for the last ten years, since I was eighteen. I can confidently say that I am totally encompassed by water. Our standard docket for the Sweet Liberty would consist of three daily trips offered to the public. The first voyage is three hours and departs from our slip at the City Dock at 9:30am. ing trip so special is that we give our guests a rare opportunity to spend an hour ashore on our beautiful and pristine barrier island, Key Waydin. This is perfect for families with children. Here they can enjoy collecting incredible species of Gulf coastal shells or even be lucky enough to find a sand dollar. The second two hour trip departs at 1:30 and has been coined our "dolphin watch." As we leave the City Dock and head south down Naples Bay, I give our guests a very descriptive narrative of our area, including some Naples history and folklore, real estate values and my favorite, nature facts. Of course, we don't leave out the dolphins. The information that I know about these truly magical creatures is something that I look forward to sharing with our guests. After all that, we go out into the Gulf to set Sweet Lib's 1000 plus square feet of sail, and enjoy 53' of waterline nicely making way, purely under sail. Our last trip of the day, possibly the most popular, is our sunset celebration. This voyage is pretty much selfexplanatory, but to elaborate a little, I'll start by saying the trip departure time changes with the seasons. Like our afternoon trip, the sunset is also two hours in duration and includes a narration of the area and usually dolphin sightings. The sunset sets the ambiance for a romantic evening for a couple or a casual get-together for a group. We encourage guests to bring picnic-style dining, a nice bottle of wine, cheese and crackers, etc. At the end of it all, we may just catch a glimpse of the elusive green flash while under sail in the Gulf of Mexico! Something that really makes me proud as a Captain of Sweet Liberty is the amount of repeat business we get. Just guessing, but I would say that more than half of our business is from return customers. That tells me that we're doing something right! Yes, the Sweet Liberty can also be rented for private parties. Sweet Liberty is a U.S. Coast Guard certified vessel and approved to carry forty-nine passengers. We have had four people privately charter our boat, and up to forty-nine. However, the owners of Sweet Liberty, Lenny and Anita Wassmer, like to limit the number of passengers to around forty-two so everyone can move around comfortably. Private charters range from birth-

day parties, anniversaries, graduations, family reunions, company outings/ team building events, and of course weddings, our specialty! There have been over one hundred weddings on board so far. We even provide funerals, where ashes are scattered over the Gulf. Naples is blessed as far as wildlife is concerned and on a typical cruise a passenger will encounter quite a bit. Lake Okeechobee's water shed system borders to our north and east, feeding the wild and untamed Everglades to the east. The Ten Thousand Islands Protected Preserve is to the south and east. The diversity of nature surrounding us is so fascinating, and inspiring to me. I really wish more people were as intrigued with the incredible environment in our own backyard as I am. I really enjoy educating our guests about the surrounding ecosystem and other nature facts. There is a plethora of wildlife to be seen on any of our trips. Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins are the most common sighting, but we also have seen manatees, sea turtles, large stingrays and other marine life. For bird lovers, there is a wide variety of our feathered friends to watch. There is a very large population of bald eagles nesting in the mangrove forest which we pass through on our way to the Gulf and it is quite common to see them during this time of year. Unfortunately, this once pristine ecosystem is very fragile and residents and visitors alike need to be educated about its tender existence so we can live side by side in balance and harmony with Mother Nature. As the population of Naples and Southwest Florida grows, it has become harder to keep our area clean, beautiful and healthy. I know I've fallen victim to this before, leaving something behind with the thought that someone else will pick it up. Everything in life is a choice. The Sweet Liberty works very closely with the Southwest Florida Conservancy, a very notable organization in our community. Once or twice a year, we donate the boat for a beach cleanup. Volunteers donate their time to pick up other peoples' litter. On those days I'm filled with emotion, so happy and appreciative that there are individuals willing to help, and also disappointed in the people who carelessly throw their trash on the beach. If we all were to do just a little, and not expect the other guy to take care of it, this world would be a better place. It's a personal responsibility. As the Sweet Liberty steams out to the Gulf of Mexico, we pass by some of the most amazing mansions in America, quite possibly rivaling the great homes of the world. The Port Royal community is undoubtedly the most prestigious and premier residential development in SW Florida thus far. It is also part of my narrative to go in-depth about this community, how it was developed back in the early 50's along with other interesting facts and real estate values. I keep as up-to-date as possible with the current asking prices of homes on the market. Fortunately, current information is passed on to me from residents of Port Royal who frequently come sailing with us, as well as realtors from the area. Port Royal was developed by a gentleman by the name of John Glenn Sample. He came to Naples from the Chicago area in 1938 and saw the potential of having a community like that here. He acted on it, which was a huge undertaking for that time and especially the place. If you were to see old ariel photos of the now Port Royal area before development, you would see nothing more then swampy mangrove marsh land. In fact, it was the most undesirable land in the annexed city of Naples. However, Mr. Sample had a vision and money to back it. Just as Walt Disney did, he sent many agents to buy up the land for him, so no

one would get the idea that just one man was taking on a project that large and drive up the prices. They acquired 770 acres on the southern tip of Naples and dredged several canals throughout, so most residents would have waterfront property. They then divided it into 700 building lots. When the lots were first for sale, in the late 1950's to early 1960's, their asking prices were anywhere from $6,000 to $12,000 a lot. Since the least expensive vacant lot today is hovering around $3.5 million, I think anyone reading this can agree that their investments appreciated quite nicely! Having been in this business since 1998, I've had the awesome opportunity to sail many big cats. I can honestly say that sailing Sweet Liberty, which is a Gold Coast 53' catamaran built down in St. Croix, is by far the quintessential day charter sailing catamaran! There have been times where the wind has come up quickly and since it's the Gulf of Mexico where our coast is so shallow, the seas kick up just as quickly. However, Sweet Liberty is a very serious ocean-going sailing catamaran. She'll take whatever conditions are given to her, proudly and almost in a cocky manner, as though she's saying, "Is that all you've got?!" Fortunately, the few crazy things have happened during offshore deliveries when there were no passengers on board. I feel very privileged to captain her, as well as to work for the owners, Lenny and Anita! It has been a great four years, and I look forward to many more. To learn more about booking a cruise, log on to sweetliberty.com or call 239.793.3525. To see the boat in person, come down to the City Dock, located at 12th & 8th in Olde Naples in the Crayton Cove district.
