WHY DEVELOPING PERSONAL CONNECTIONS IS IMPORTANT TO YOU, YOUR CAREER AND YOUR COMPANY? I came across Kit Pang’s (Ted Talk Speaker) article in Boston Speaks about connection while waiting for my turn in LTO. It was quite timely for this quarter’s issue of PMC Connect. Pang says that changes in technology (robotics most especially,) emerging markets, shifting demographics, and other disruptions are creating the new employment landscape. To quote, “Today and in the years to come employers will continue to seek out team members skilled at communication, collaboration, and persuasion. From sales to engineering, new generations of employees and their employers are placing emphasis on emotional intelligence, relationship building, and teamwork.” These competencies (knowledge, skills and personality) are required to DEVELOP CONNECTIONS. Connection is important in developing one’s self, building a good career and achieving organizational goals.

Before I get to the SIGNIFICANCE of CONNECTION in these three aspects: PERSONAL, PROFESSIONAL & ORGANIZATIONAL, let us first move to an agreement of what does it mean to connect? Harvard Business Review defines CONNECTION as “deep, mature and authentic relationship built and sustained with another person.” Let us unpack this definition.

Connection is not an acquiantance-type relationship. It has to be deep, mature and authentic. And the reason it is not an acquantaince-type relationship is because connection is a relationship that is sustained to last long.

WHY IS CONNECTION IMPORTANT FOR MY ORGANIZATION? Every company, every organization, every business exist for its customers. “Happy (satisfied) customers” is the success and pride of organizations. “HAPPY/SATISFIED CUSTOMERS” is the RESULT OF CONNECTION. Are the company’s vision, mission and core values connect to their customers and employees? Do their products and services connect to their customers? Are the employees connected to the company they are responsible for and the customers they are accountable to? To succeed and to remain competitive, businesses must create a mutually beneficial relationship between their organization and its customers- a relationship that is achieved through CONNECTION.

WHY IS CONNECTION IMPORTANT FOR MY JOB/CAREER? Organizations today are matrix organizations. It simply means that my output depends on the output of other people in my own team and other teams in the company. The breaking-down of silos has been a formula in achieving efficient and effective results. To realize that I need people to do a great job is the path of a significant career. I always use sports as an analogy.

“An excellent player can only achieve so much but an excellent team can win championships.” To connect is to collaborate. To connect is to help my team achieve goals. But in achieving my team/company goals, I fulfill my job roles as well as realize my career objectives at the same time.

WHY IS CONNECTION IMPORTANT TO MY PERSONAL WELLBEING? We are created, we are purposed for a relationship. The sooner we accept that, the better. Why is connection important for you? Because the result of connection is FRIENDSHIP. Working and pursuing your career can be lonely. To connect with other professionals who understand the road make the journey worth taking. Because when faced with challenges or frustrations, a trusted friend can prove invaluable. And the best time to find a true friend is before you need one. CONNECTION is good for you because real friends are precious rewards of life.

This year, we want to be “HEART-CONNECTED, PURPOSE-DRIVEN AND BEING-TRANSFORMED.” We want to be part of each other’s stories. And to achieve this, we need to develop CONNECTION. Connection that is deep, mature and authentic.

My beloved PMC Talents, to know if something is true it must be tested. Connection is not only built, it must be sustained. So know for sure that your CONNECTION with people will be tested by time, distance, challenges and conflicts. Do not lose the exciting and rewarding prize of being connected because the process becomes difficult.

With authenticity, depth and continuity, BEING CONNECTED, facilitates constant learning and transformation. Who would not want it?

During the The WOW Experience training and Coffeebreak, I was enlightened on how to be more intentional in dealing with clients. With the 5 A’s of WOW Experience, what struck me the most were attitude and acts of kindness. With the right attitude, you can turn an angry or upset customer into a happy and satisfied client, turning their good day into a great day. This kind of customer service would entail more than just assisting clients. Instead, we have to be sincere in answering their queries.

During the Coffeebreak, I really love how HR team clarified some things that were vague to us. They were very open to questions and listened to our wishlist (even though some seemed impossible to happen). I am looking forward to the next training with the team.
