The modern city of Rome sits on top of the ruins of earlier eras. As each period was taking form, we know that existing structures were collapsed or filled in with earth and roofs of old structures became foundations of the new buildings, gradually morphing into the complex archeological lay-ering that is modern Rome. In an urban context, the city of Rome has so many historic buildings with layers of construction which are tied to the past through architecture as well as history.
Backscattering is a way of creating reflections in space to make visual connections.
This concept is derived from these layers of historic constructions, that are conceptually relating to the Influence that students have on each others from being a part of a collaborative study environment at RISD.
The identity of RISD is unique to every student as the culture experienced at this design school provides immense creative scope to make a strong designer.
Translating the prominent elements of architecture from the past in the Cenci to reflect onto the modern interventions to create direct visual connection with these elements to create a strong identity.
My main intervention revolves around using reflective/ mirrored materials to create a mirror image of the old elements like the roof, portrait of Beatrice and the courtyard and trying to use these elements as directional elements to visually experience them but also translating this concept of reflectiveness into how spaces are viewed and perceived in terms of func-tion by students.

Whether it be a prayer mat, a meditation rug, or simply a carpet in your bedroom, this extra surface defines a space that transcends the common experience. It provides opportunities for a connection to a higher being, the deepening of conscious awareness, or genuine comfort. Borrowed from a vocabulary that simultaneously has sacred connotations and is familiar to us in everyday life, our design of a reflection space seeks to show respect to all religious practices, enrich spiritual experience and allow a moment of solitary refuge from the business and anxiety of everyday life.
