Ancient library of the astronomical observatory - Rome

The dome of the observatory has never hosted the telescope that was stolen during the Second World War by retreating Germans, so the director decided to turn the dome into a library to house a collection of ancient books. The circle is the archetypal figure of Western culture and in various civilizations of the ancient world the circle has a magic value. Moreover this symbolic value does not disappear with the modern age. In this project the theme of circularity becomes the distinctive feature of a cognitive path that invites to discovery and research. A gallery ring, eccentric compared to the circular room, redefine

the absolute space of the

dome and ideally separate the spaces with different functions.

Roma Museum in Abu Dhabi

The Roma Museum in Abu Dhabi in conceived as an archeological undercover. The design is based on a modular grid of typical ancient roman cities and is coming out from the sea and the sand of the Saadiyat Island Cultural District. The building has been designed to create a monolithic homogenous presence of the structure as a whole, cut by deep slits and voids randomly spread on the surface to bring light and air inside between the volumes. Like in an archeological excavation, all the building is developed under the ground level as a hollowed space and only the roof comes out from the sea and the sand. The result is a pattern of regular, floating, monolithic blocks covering the large continuous space of the exhibition galleries. A carefully modeled path of circulation leads the visitors to certain predetermined points but lets them explore freely all the exhibition space.
