From the Prncipal

From The Principal

I am honoured to write the Principal’s message for the final edition in 2022 of The Crest!

Over the last twelve months, the School witnessed several outstanding achievements. Despite the various challenges posed by Covid, the School is building passionate, inspirational teaching and learning programs that suit our students, at our school, at this time. In particular, we are focussing on providing clear pathways for our students to achieve their goals, whatever they may be.

One goal we are particularly proud of is the work being done towards the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) launched by the Anglican Schools Commission. PMACS has already made excellent progress in this space with formation of our own RAP working party and adding a series of Aboriginal artworks to our campus. The initial work in the RAP space will be further developed in coming months with the formalisation of a partnership between PMACS and Moodjar Consultancy. The partnership will have a key focus on building on the cultural understanding of staff and students alike. While details are still being finalised, the partnership will look to develop a PMACS specific Acknowledgement of Country and curriculum resources for students across PK – 12.

While there is always plenty on which to report, two particular events from the past few weeks highlight the special opportunities that we provide for students here at Peter Moyes Anglican Community School.

For our Primary students, children’s entertainer, Peter Coombe, performed a set of his classing songs in the Allan Shaw Centre on Wednesday 23 November. The event was very well received by students (and staff!) with lots of singing and dancing, and Peter was very impressed with the level of student engagement. In particular, Peter was full of praise for the aspects of the sound and light production handled by one of our Secondary School students.

THE CREST, DECEMBER 2022 I Belong, Everyone Matters, Together We Achieve

On the same day as Peter Coombe was entertaining our Primary School students, our Secondary School students enjoyed a special event held in the Black Box Theatre. Former student and winner of the 2023 Giro D’Italia, Jai Hindley, paid the School a visit and was the star attraction at a special assembly. The students present asked lots of questions to learn more about Jai’s experiences and what it takes to be a professional athlete. Jai graciously brought in his race bike and trophy, with the session running over time due to demand from staff and students alike. As a school we are so proud of Jai and his achievements and are so grateful that he took the time to share stories of his success with students across the School.

Male and Female Role Models

During November, students in Year 9 attended a special event to recognise the importance that role models can play in supporting young people. Year 9 girls attended a special Afternoon Tea, an opportunity to gather with their peers and the significant women in their lives. While enjoying some tasty treats, the girls were motivated by guest speaker and alumnus, Kate Major, who spoke at length about good and bad role models and how to work out the difference. As a former Head Girl and Dux of our school, Kate provided an engaging address to our Year 9 girls on the benefits of perseverance and seeking support when needed. Not to be left out, the Year 9 boys had the opportunity to attend a ‘Male World’ Breakfast and hear from School Council member Adam Inder. As a former Head Boy and Dux, Adam struck a good balance between humour, relevance and seriousness that was appreciated by the crowd. Adam particularly highlighted the role dads play and shared stories of his own fatherhood journey. I extend my sincere thanks to both Adam and Kate for their inspiring addresses.

Staff News

For some staff and students the end of the School year also signals the end of their time at Peter Moyes as they move on to different opportunities and challenges. No matter how long staff or students are with us, they are forever a part of the School’s fabric, and I hope they will always remain connected with us. Some long standing members of staff deserve a special mention here, including Ashlee Lazarus who is moving to Scotch, Cathy Martin who is moving to St Mary’s, Alan Rourke who is moving to St Marks, Karen De Swardt, Annie Gifford and Richard Cackett who are retiring, David Osman who is moving to Landsdale Christian, and Toni Rockliff who is moving to PLC. All of these staff members have served for 10 or more years at Peter Moyes and I thank them all for their significant contributions to our school.

Twilight Markets and Tour

The annual Art Exhibition and Twilight Markets were held on Friday 11 November. The event continues to grow annually with an increase in the number of stalls and food vendors this year, along with a broader repertoire of artistic performances. We were blessed with favourable weather conditions on the night, although a little chilly, and we also had the largest turnout since the combining the two events. One change this year was to move the music performances to the Café Lawn, with mostly dance performances on the stage. This had a twofold benefit of creating a beautiful ambience in the outdoor areas and providing more opportunities for students to perform on stage in the Allan Shaw Centre. Moving forward we will look to add an outdoor bar and fire pit for the adults and continue to explore options for more activities to grow the event.

Future Directions

As always, we love to hear stories of Alumni success and I encourage you to reach out to us with your exciting news. You can send news and photos to alumni@pmacs.wa.edu.au anytime!

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the work of the Alumni Association in coordinating and promoting opportunities for past students to engage with each other and the School Community. The Committee have been ably supported by Mrs Sue Webb and Mrs Belinda Lockyer from the PMACS Admin Team and I a very grateful for their continued efforts. I encourage all Alumni to support the great work of the Committee by attending the various events next year and engaging with the School through social media.

From the Chair

Letter from Chairperson

Welcome to the Class of 2022! It is great to see another cohort becoming members of the PMACS Alumni Association. May The Crest guide you in seeking goods or services you might be searching for, and become a platform should you wish to share anything about your life post graduation, as we would love to publish an excerpt about you and what you are doing.

I can’t be the only one whom feels like the months are flying by more quickly as each year passes! The warmer weather is finally here, which means now is the ideal time to lock in that iced coffee date or sunset drink with friends and see how they’re doing now that 2022 is almost over.

This year has been filled with great accomplishments from the PMACS Alumni and the wider community. It is so easy to connect virtually these days with our former scholars; you might see their career efforts on LinkedIn, or their personal triumphs via newsfeed posts and photo carousels. As we enter the end of year period and begin to enjoy the holidays, it is a great time to reflect on all that you have achieved in the last twelve months and feel proud of your efforts. It’s easy to be hard on ourselves, but much harder to recognise your self worth and remember that you are probably hitting more milestones and making more positive impact than you realise.

Thank you to those who have participated in Spotlight on Small Business in 2022! It has been incredibly encouraging to see so many members of the Alumni turning their ideas or hobbies into businesses, and watching our city’s local community contribute to the success of your pursuits. A huge thank you to those whom have given their time this year to the Alumni in any way - if you’ve visited or volunteered at the school, hosted a talk or presentation, sent in your business info or Happy News, or attended any Alumni events.

Thank you to the committee members for their time and efforts in 2022. Alumni, please know that we are always up for welcoming more Association members to our committee if this is of interest to you! A special thank you to Sue Webb, Enrolments Officer and Belinda Lockyer, Administration Assistant who devote their time to brainstorming all our committee ideas and making them happen; and work tirelessly liaising with myself and other committee members, as well as with teachers, Heads of Department and Heads of Year, and Administration in order to ensure that our school symposiums and external events run smoothly, and that The Crest is beautifully compiled twice a year showcasing Alumni achievements.

I

Belong, Everyone Matters,

Keep your eye out over the Summer for happy news, job promotions, graduations, course completions, celebrations and birthdays - and ask your friends if they’d like to have their achievements shared in The Crest next year. We can’t wait to see what the Alumni gets up to at the beginning of 2023. The holidays can be a difficult time for a lot of people, so take good care of your family and friends - and especially good care of yourself - and stay safe! Have a joyous and merry holiday celebration and Happy New Year to all.

Those in attendance enjoyed complimentary drinks and canapes and chatted about what everybody has been up to since graduating ten years ago. Sadly too much fun was had to get any photographs. We did, however, manage to get some information about what some of the Class of 2012 are currently up to…

Alumni at PMACS!

Earlier this year in July Chris Northall visited PMACS to run a Year 12 Drama workshop with PMACS head of Dance and Drama Mrs Emma Leadon. The workshop focused on Character Development and Improvisation. After the workshop Emma put a few questions to Chris.

Year you graduated?

I graduated Peter Moyes in 2016 having come to the school in 2009.

What you have been up to since leaving school?

Knowing that I wanted to pursue acting since late Middle School, I spent my first two years out of school auditioning for the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) before being accepted into their Diploma of Acting in 2019. The Diploma is a year long course of mainly night classes focused on fundamental skills of acting. After my year at WAAPA, I auditioned for the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney. I was accepted into their Bachelor of Fine Arts Acting course and am currently finishing my third and final year of studies. The hours are long, 9am to 6pm, five days a week, but it has been some of the best training I could ever hope to receive. The course is made up of a variety of disciplines. Movement and Voice training make up a large part of our studies, both comprised of various techniques and skills which we are given the chance to apply in our, initially in-house and later public, performances. Often these shows are directed by external industry professionals, giving us a chance to network and learn from those already working in the arts. Other classes include the likes of parkour, stage combat, improvisation, clowning, accents and dialects, numerous styles of dance, theatre history, film studies and much, much more.

THE CREST, DECEMBER 2022 I Belong, Everyone Matters, Together We Achieve

Of course, the timing of my studies meant a good portion of my time at NIDA has been spent online. And although a movement duet with a chair in my bedroom was by no means optimal, we still managed to make it work and later returned to our training in person with renewed vigour and determination. But the training wouldn’t be what it is without the people I’ve had the privilege to work alongside. Many of the friends I have made feel more akin to brothers and sisters than friends at this point. While I have grown enormously as an actor in the past two and a half years, I have also grown enormously as a person. The training by nature is deeply vulnerable and introspective and forces you to consider much of who you are and what you value. And I feel very lucky to consider myself both a better artist, and a better person for it.

What are your hopes for after you graduate from NIDA?

Much of the work and training I have done has had a focus around theatre, though we get to explore screen and voice over work as well. I’d love to pursue a career in all these acting forms, though lately I’m finding myself more interested in voice over. One of the most difficult things about acting as a career is the work you do isn’t always up to you. Sure, I can decide whether or not I will submit an audition for an upcoming piece of work, but whether I get it or not is out of my hands. So I try to keep an open mind and welcome any chance I may get with open arms because ultimately, the industry will decide what kind of work I do. If I get the opportunity to perform, with other likeminded creatives AND get paid for doing so, I’m a happy man.

THE CREST, DECEMBER 2022 I Belong, Everyone Matters, Together We Achieve

What is your favourite PMACS memory?

Similarly when thinking about my time at drama school, I think my most cherished memories are the small, at the time, seemingly insignificant moments I shared with friends. Looking back, I remember fondly larger events like the first time I went on stage in the school production of Stuart Little, and I certainly cherish those memories and they mean a lot to me. But ultimately, it’s crying with laughter with one of my best friends during assembly when we absolutely should have been paying attention to the person on stage. It’s consoling a friend at lunch when they’re having a rough day. It’s awkwardly turning up to the wrong class and it’s the time my crush talked to me about what I was playing on the piano during music. All those small moments are the ones I love the most.

How would you like to continue your connection with PMACS in the future?

I think acting and drama are wonderful things to teach and I’m very lucky to be able to do so, mainly as part of NIDA’s Open Program as a teacher’s assistant. Part of the reason NIDA has been such an amazing experience is the plethora of teachers and creatives that we’ve had across to the years. I think art, and acting especially, is one of those spaces that thrives on meeting and learning from as many people as you can. And it’s not only beneficial for the students, but also for the teachers. I know I’ve left many a class feeling inspired by the work students have created. So it’s been lovely to come back to PMACS and work with young people and I hope I’ll get the chance to do so again in future!

Malcolm Hansen - Class of 2010

Since graduating from Peter Moyes as a student in 2010, I have walked down multiple avenues, many of which were related to the main career path I was aiming to pursue, teaching. I studied a Bachelor of Science and subsequently a Graduate Diploma in Education at UWA. I also met my wife at a Christian conference over at Canberra around this time, and we were engaged only a few months after meeting!

In 2015, I accepted my first teaching contract at Ellenbrook Christian College and was a pioneer of a new program they started implementing that year which aimed to combine all subject areas and multiple classes. After this contract finished, I worked at Kennedy Baptist College, with a much more traditional teaching and learning model.

I decided to take a break for some time after this to pursue some other interests, completing a few extra units to gain a Bachelor of Science (Psychology). My son was also born in 2017. I worked in a few different jobs in the busy time after my son was born, working in dispatch for Bus and Coach International, as an order selector for Woolworths, and volunteering at the Salvation Army. My daughter was born in 2019, and I then moved into tutoring, both for my own business and for Progressive Home Tutors. Now, coming full circle, I am back at Peter Moyes, this time as a Secondary Mathematics Teacher.

Alumni Spotlight on Small Business

Spotlight on Small Business

Business Name: Madi McClelland Photography

Alumni: Madi McClelland, Class of 2016

What products do you sell?

What is your business about? I sell packages for different kinds of photography services; from weddings, to portraits, to families, to couples.

How long have you enjoyed running your small business?

Since 2019, so three years. I did Design with Ms West at PMACS and from doing that class I loved photography. I bought my first camera to do assignments. After graduating, people started asking me to photograph their events - eighteenth birthday parties etc - and my photography business launched from there! I got asked by my cousin who’s a musician to shoot his album cover; this was where I learned about my love for portrait photography.

What’s one perk about owning your own business?

I get to choose which projects that I take on based on what I’m most passionate about, as well as being able to work in my free time and deciding when I want to work or when I want to relax. Photography fits into my schedule around my full time administration job perfectly, and allows me to spend time doing what I love, whenever I want. At the moment I’m currently doing Santa photography in shopping centres, in the evenings and on weekends!

I Belong, Everyone Matters, Together We Achieve THE CREST, DECEMBER 2022

Could you share one piece of advice for someone wanting to turn their hobby into a small business?

Just start! Make sure you get yourself into it. There were times when I worked differently to what I do currently, and didn’t have time to do what I love - so I changed jobs to make the time! If you do make time to do what you’re passionate about, the business will follow. The moment I opened myself up to pursuing my photography passion I kept getting jobs and bookings off people!

Aaryan Kapila - Class of 2018

On Friday 11 November PMACS held their annual Twilight Market. It is always so pleasing to see our Alumni with stalls at the market. This year PMACS was pleased to welcome back the Kapila brothers. They have a great business called 'Sock 'n' Roll'.

About Us

Sock ‘n’ Roll is a vision brought to you by three brothers out of Perth, Western Australia. However, we are more than just a brand, we are a community. A community built upon bringing you the best possible socks available. We pride ourselves on our high quality and eccentric styles.

With a strong passion for clothing and fashion, the creation of this brand was inevitable. This project of ours has been in the works for a long time. We figured that we had done enough brainstorming and should actually put in some hours. From late night arguments to early morning starts, we have truly put our passion into this community.

Sock ‘n’ Roll was created with the desire to make socks more than just a fashion accessory, but instead a lifestyle. One that embraces our way of life here on the West Coast. So grab a pair and embrace the lifestyle!

We are constantly evolving and challenging ourselves to be better. Better for you.

Each collection is different and a limited release.

Christening at St Gregory's Chapel Peter Moyes Anglican Community School

Niklaus Ruud Anthony Starkey Christened on 30th October 2022 St. Gregory’s Chapel, Peter Moyes ACS

Our son Niklaus’ Christening was on Sunday 30th October 2022, at St. Gregory’s chapel. We chose St. Gregory’s because it is the PMACS chapel which felt significant to our family. Present at the Christening were myself and my husband Adam as Klaus’ parents, his two Godmothers and two Godfathers (including two former PMACS students, Paige Watson - Class of 2013 and Jordan Roberts - Class of 2016) and our closest friends and family. We were fortunate to have family fly over from the UK to join us for his baptism, too. Lots of comments of admiration were made with reference to how breath-taking the chapel is, including the wood finish throughout and the beautiful marble. In organising the service we selected hymns that we remember singing in Chapel over a decade ago in middle school: Shine Jesus Shine and Here I Am Lord but we couldn’t quite remember them word for word!

Father Peter and all of St. Gregory’s parish are lovely people and I highly recommend the service to any Alumni wishing to baptise their child/children.

CYCLING CHAMP RETURNS TO PMACS

We have been very fortunate to welcome past student and 2022 Giro d'Italia winner, Jai Hindley, back to PMACS on a couple of occasions during term 4.

During once of our Primary School assemblies, Jai was interviewed on stage by our Year 6 Academic Extension students. He was asked about his win, how he got started in competitive cycling, what it's like to live overseas, and lots more interesting questions. He also showed the School his bike and amazing trophy!

Jai then returned to School for a more intimate chat with select Secondary School students in our Black Box Theatre. Our 2023 Head Boy and Girl, Brady and Anya, asked Jai a few questions before opening it up to the audience. Students also rode a Peloton bike to attempt to simulate the speed at which Jai rode in the Giro!

Thank you very much to Jai for taking the time out of your visit home to spend time with us at PMACS and inspire the next generation of potential sporting stars!
