ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

From the Prncipal Welcome to the latest edition of The Crest! As I write my notes for the latest edition, I have been reflecting on the events of the past few weeks. We have had excursions, incursions, assemblies, Chapels, a tree planting ceremony for our Year 12 Leavers, the Anglican Schools Commission Rock Concert, a Year 7 Drama and Dance performance, Hungry Hippos Competition for Primary House Point winners, final rehearsals for Snapshot Youth Theatre Company’s latest production, ‘Bed Bugs’, CAS Sport, a visit from Maths Pathway leaders and the NIPSSA Cross Country Carnival. These activities are but a sample of the holistic education we provide at Peter Moyes Anglican Community School, where our focus is on providing multiple opportunities for students to shine, whatever their strengths and passions may be.

Staff News Over our history, the School has had many long standing staff who have made an invaluable contribution to our School. Some of those staff members have now chalked up 20 years of service, a phenomenal effort. Each of these staff members have been recognised by the Anglican Schools Commission and also have their name entered on the honour board in the Staff Lounge. To date, Kim Andrew, Richard Alchin, Sheena Richardson, Gwen McLeod, and Angela Lamers have been recognised for providing 20 plus years of service at PMACS, and we remain ever grateful for their significant contribution to our school. Two particular staff members deserve an extra special mention. Larry Parkes and Cynthia Starcevich were both on staff when the School opened 22 years ago, and they are still working tirelessly today in the best interests of students. This is a wonderful achievement, and long may they continue at PMACS!

Aboriginal Artworks In 2021 the School applied for a Special Mission Fund to obtain grant funding to add a series of Aboriginal artworks to our campus. I am pleased to report that our application, submitted by the Dean of Students PK-6, Mrs Nicole Brown, was successful. In the latter part of 2021, the School engaged a local Noongar artist, Jade Dolman, to design some potential options. Over the summer break, Jade worked to finalise three pieces, with one located near the Bush Tucker Garden, one opposite the Pre-Primary classrooms and another one in the Tempat Tenang Courtyard. The works were completed in early February and have added a real vibrancy to the respective areas. I look forward to showcasing these impressive artworks with Alumni when they next visit our campus.

2021 WACE Results Results for our 2021 Leavers were released in December with some pleasing results. Most importantly, over half of the eligible cohort gained an ATAR ranking of 80 or more, with one third of the group gaining an ATAR of 85 or above. The School’s Median ATAR maintained its recent historic score of over 80, at 81.10, a very pleasing result. Each year the School recognises those students who have achieved an ATAR of 95 or higher. Students who achieve this mark have their name immortalised on the ‘95 Club Honour Board’ in the Doug Swingler Building. In 2021, eight students, approximately 15% of our ATAR Pathway students, met this benchmark. While these results are impressive, the School continues to focus on our Teaching and Learning processes to maximise the opportunities for all students to be successful. At PMACS, we pride ourselves on providing clear pathways for students to achieve success and realise their goals. In 2021, 40% of our Year 12 cohort participated in a non-ATAR pathway. THE CREST, JULY 2022

I Belong, Everyone Matters, Together We Achieve

This included options such as School Based Traineeships, General Courses, Workplace Learning, and ECU UniPrep, or a combination of these opportunities. Our key focus is ensuring that students are in the most suitable pathway to achieve their goals and we will always work closely with students and parents to achieve this outcome.

Yipirinya Service Learning Reverend Jean-Pierre Schroeder and Health and Physical Education Teacher Kristina Oxley recently visited Yipirinya School in Alice Springs to explore a potential service learning partnership. Yipirinya School is a small school that delivers two curriculums: an Aboriginal Curriculum and the Australian Curriculum. The visit was very successful, with the Principal of Yipirinya keen to develop an ongoing relationship. I have asked Reverend Schroder and Kristina to work on a proposal for a student trip in July 2023. The trip would include working with younger students, a visit to a local community, and sightseeing opportunities including Uluru and Ormiston Gorge. The first trip will be targeted towards senior students, although future iterations may include younger students. This is an exciting step for our school and I look forward to sharing more details with our Alumni in due course.

Future Directions As always, we love to hear stories of Alumni success and I encourage you to reach out to us with your exciting news. You can send news and photos to alumni@pmacs.wa.edu.au anytime! In concluding, I hope you enjoy reading the latest edition of The Crest and I encourage you to stay in touch with the School as we go from strength to strength. Every Blessing. From the Chair Half way through 2022. Half way towards hitting our goals for the year, half way through a year’s worth of achievements. Well done for everything you’ve overcome so far, we can all get caught up in daily stresses and don’t always give ourselves credit for how well we are doing. You are doing so well! Please acknowledge the little things you accomplish often, as well as the larger things too. We’ve navigated a couple of lockdowns, a few more restrictions, and now it seems we are mostly back to places being open and back to working in person, and less use of Zoom for gatherings. 2012 cohort, your reunion is coming up! My own ten year reunion is fast approaching, and as it does it is heartwarming to see names from old classmates and peers popping up. Whether it’s new businesses opening, surnames changing on Facebook, career milestones, wedding and family photos being uploaded on social media, or their literal faces plastered on bus benches and advertisement spaces! I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels a small sense of pride in seeing some happy news from a fellow PMACS student, or a student you once saw in the halls now making moves in the community or perhaps a different city. So, half a year has gone - of writing to-do lists and reminders, and setting coffee dates and telling ourselves we will catch up with that friend but not quite getting round to it. I encourage you, as we go into the second half of 2022, to reach out to that old friend or that colleague or that person you keep meaning to contact. You never know how much it could brighten their day, or how much you might have needed it yourself. Warm wishes and positive blessings! Alumni at PMACS!

In Week 9, Jorjah-Kourtney Starkey visited the two Year 10 Children, Family and Community (CFC) classes with her adorable son, Niklaus. Jorjah-Kourtney is currently the Chairperson of the PMACS Alumni Committee – she was part of the 2013 cohort and had no trouble remembering her way around the school, even though it has changed a lot in almost a decade. Klaus was born in November 2021 and when he visited, he was wearing his own little PMACS polo shirt! He is a very happy, smiley, attentive baby and just loved meeting the Year 10s. It’s hard to say who was more excited – Klaus or the Year 10s! Jorjah-Kourtney spoke about her pregnancy, birth and journey into motherhood. She answered every question that the Year 10s asked and it was a very open discussion, which was very much appreciated by the students. We are lucky enough to have Jorjah-Kourtney and Klaus visiting again in a couple of months so that the Year 10s can see how much he has grown and developed. We are definitely looking forward to this!

Alumni Spotlight on Small Business Spotlight on Small Business Penny Field - (2014) Business name: Flame by Penny Lane Alumni: Penny Field, Class of 2014 What products do you sell? What is your business about? I sell all things candle related! Candle jars, melts and moulds! My business is all about providing gorgeous home decor to my customers, where they can customise colours/scents to suit their home space How long have you enjoyed running your small business? I’ve been lucky enough to been running my small business for two years now! What’s one perk about owning your own business? One perk about owning my business would be that it i still perceive it as a hobby not a task. I enjoy creating candles and seeing my products in households! Could you share one piece of advice for someone wanting to turn their hobby into a small business? Don’t rush to start your business and take time to perfect things 💕 Where can we find you? You can find Flame By Penny Lane on Instagram or Facebook! @flamebypennylane Thanks Penny!

Jorjah-Kourtney Starkey (née Roberts) - (2013) Business name: Bronzed by G Alumni: Jorjah-Kourtney Starkey, Class of 2013 What products do you sell? What is your business about? I run a spray tanning service, from my home in Alkimos. I actually started back up to promote sunless tanning after my father had two skin cancers cut out of his head in 2021. I’ve listened to him tell us the importance of putting on sun cream daily so it was very surprising to us that he has had two melanomas. I also sell hydrating moisturisers and a tan removing lotion, made here in Australia - a company owned and operated by Australians that also wants to raise awareness about the side effects of sun exposure and offer an alternative. So many people - young and old - just don’t follow sun smart or sun safe procedures. How long have you enjoyed running your small business? I started up from my home in Alkimos last year, when I was pregnant. I was having time off teaching so it was nice to use some of my time to manage social media accounts and promote women’s confidence through sunless tanning!

What’s one perk about owning your own business? I find it very beneficial that working for myself meant that I get to see firsthand my efforts pay off! It’s very rewarding to see growth when you have a target market and you spend hours doing research and creating graphics for your socials. And it’s very encouraging to get positive feedback on products and your services after trialling multiple options and processes, it’s a reminder of why you put in the effort that you do. Could you share one piece of advice for someone wanting to turn their hobby into a small business? Don’t go into it with a rigid mindset. Flexibility is key, you have to be open and you have to accept things that are out of your hands. All the right things will fall into place as they are meant to! Where can we find you? My little side business is mainly operated via Instagram, but Bronzed by G is on Facebook as well. Instagram.com/bronzed.by.g

Kristina Oxley - (2005) Kristina Oxley recently visited Yipirinya School in Alice Springs as part of a Health Studies project. Yipirinya School delivers teaching and learning in the Indigenous language, with English taught as a second language. 100% of the students at the school are Indigenous. During her visit, Kristina noted that the children at Yiprinya often have to travel hundreds of kilometres each day to and from school, and with temperatures sometimes dipping below 0 in winter, they are in dire need of appropriate winter clothing and footwear over the coming months.

Kristina organised a winter clothing appeal to collect pre-loved clothing and shoes for the children of Yipirinya School (aged 5 and above). After an overwhelming response to her original request for donations, more collection points were added to allow the community to continue contributing.

For those wishing to donate funds towards this very worthy cause, you can do so via the following link: https://www.trybooking.com/au/donate/ysicc We thank you all in advance for any contribution you can make to help these children. THE CREST, JULY 2022
