PLUSFILE was founded in Cambridge in 1984.

From humble beginnings PLUSFILE began publishing diaries and notelets in 1984, in-house manufacturing soon followed.

During the early 1990’s the company moved to the same Cambridge location that exists today. PLUSFILE is now available from companies located on four continents.

HISTORY AND TRADITION

Cambridge has a long and enduring history with printing and note taking, stretching back hundreds of years.

The Cambridge University Press established in 1534, is the oldest publishing and printing company in the world.

The University of Cambridge has stimulated minds of many famous notebook users since it was established in 1209. 61 Nobel Prizes have been awarded to graduates, the most of any university in the world. A further 88 Nobel Prizes have been awarded to affiliates of the university.

From Charles Darwin to Stephen Hawking, Isaac Newton to William Wordsworth; Cambridge alumni have long been ardent note takers.

105AD NOTEBOOK

Paper was invented in China in 105 A.D. by Cai Lun, an official of the Imperial Court. Taking the inner bark of a mulberry tree and bamboo fibres, Cai Lun mixed them with water, and pounded them with a wooden tool. He then poured this mixture onto a flat piece of woven cloth and let the water drain through, leaving only the fibres on the cloth. Once dry, Cai Lun was left with a quality writing surface that was lightweight and easy to make.

Chinese Emperors closely guarded the secret to papermaking but over several centuries, through trade and war, the knowledge of papermaking passed along to Korea, Samarkand and Damascus.

The way paper was made would change and evolve over time but in China, workshops continue to make paper the way Cai Lun had done all those years ago.

Inspired by this Chinese tradition, Plusfile are proud to present the new 105 A.D. notebook range. The notebook boasts authentic traditional mulberry paper with beautiful decoration, bound together in a classic leather covering.
