Funded by Arts Council Wales (ACW), as part of their Momentum’s early intervention strand, and in partnership with Communities First (North Torfaen), the “Capture’ a Moment in Time” photography project has teamed with two Torfaen schools, to use creative methods as a form of engagement with young people. The ‘Capture’ photography project has worked with targeted pupils from Years 8, 9 and 10 from West Monmouthshire Comprehensive School and Abersychan Comprehensive School, to undertake early interventions using a range of creative techniques and methods to engage with pupils. The project used photography as a means to engage with pupils who may not have initially accessed photography as an option. Photography tutor Darren Warner, has taught a range of techniques, enabling the young people to see the world in a different way. They have developed their photography skills to capture images in a number of environments; images that are original, attractive and of a high standard. The project has used photography as a means to engage with pupils who may not have initially accessed photography as an option. Being taught in a wide range of techniques, enabled the young people to see the world from a new perspective. The young people were encouraged to consider a new way of seeing their environment look at the world a different way, through they photographer’s eyes. This is done by using a series of techniques by studying composition, through line, form and texture. These techniques are then adapted in the world around us, through the lens of the camera. Sessions were taught in a series of small building blocks, from basics camera techniques, to understanding light and exposure, developing the students creative abilities using a step by step progressive process that can be adapted and used throughout their lives in many different forms and career pathways. The pupils have learnt to train the eye to see different perspective from what their normal view would be. Once trained, this can utilised in all forms of photography: landscape, still life and portraiture, finding beauty in a world that is on their doorsteps.
