January Meeting - Thursday, January 4 The January meeting is our installation of new officers for 2017. We will begin with a meal at 6:00 pm, followed by a short business meeting and installation of new officers for 2017. Special guest Janis Upshall, Hardanger Fiddler, will entertain. This is a very important meeting in which we welcome a new board and thank those who served in the previous term. In this way, we move forward and continue to preserve and promote our wonderful heritage. Please come and meet and greet your Embla Sisters. (Note: The service item for the Family Renewal Shelter is household paper products.}

Coming up in February "For our meeting on February 2, our guest speaker will be our sister Wendy Neptun. Wendy is of Sa mi heritage. She will share information about the Sa mi culture and show off her new gakti. We are looking forward to hearing all that Wendy has to share with us."

President's Message I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas holiday with family and friends. I do hope that 2016 was good to you and extend peace to those who experienced a misfortune, illness, or loss of a loved one.

Our annual Christmas party held on December 1st was again a huge success with over 100 members, family, and friends in attendance. This event would not be possible without the work of our members making it the best "Potluck" ever. There were fun crafts for the children organized by Suzy Johnston and her team. Singing around the Christmas tree would not happen without the efforts of Karen Bell and team decorating the tree. This year we even had a Christmas songbook put together by Mardy Fairchild so we could actually sing the words of the songs (especially those sung in Norwegian), and Elda Sulerud and Maren Johnson again served as piano accompanists. It was such a treat to see the delight on each child's face when they received their very own gift from the Julenissen. Mark Ottoson (Julenissen) and Lisa Ottoson (his helper) are so clever in knowing what each child wants for Christmas each year. My granddaughter, Brianna, from Billings, Montana, was able to attend for the 3rd year. She really looks forward to coming what she calls the "Bunad" party and seeing her friend, Emery, and making new friends as well. I'm sure you will find many pictures from the Christmas party featured in this issue of the Nyheter. A lot of work goes into putting on this event and I want to extend a huge MANGE TAKKto everyone that helped in any way and that also includes coming and bringing your family. Keith from the Family Renewal Shelter came to express his appreciation for our ongoing support of the shelter. For Christmas this year Embla provided gifts for a mother and her three children. Thank you all for your generous contribution in providing gifts to this special family needing some extra Christmas blessing this year.

This will be my final President's message as I will be passing on the torch to Lisa Ottoson as of January 5, 2017. I feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to serve as President of Embla in 2015 and 2016. These past two years have been an experience of a lifetime and proved to be very educational and lots of fun too. At times I was placed out of my comfort zone, specifically with public spea1<ing, which I can do now with much greater ease and even laugh at myself. My focus during my two years as President has been to encourage every member to become more involved. There are numerous opportunities in Embla to make new friends (sisters) and this only can be accomplished by participation. The Daughters of Norway are an outstanding organization and are so important to preserve and promote our wonderful heritage. Mange Takk for all your support. I look forward to serving as your Judge for the next two years and will continue to be a very active member in Embla and look forward to seeing you at a meeting and/or working with you at one of the many activities available for all of us to be involved in.

Our January 5 meeting is the installation of 2017 officers. We will have a meal at 6 pm and a program at 7 pm followed by a short business meeting and installation. I hope to see you all there. This is a great opportunity for you to wear your bunad or Norwegian sweater.

Brown Bear Car Wash Tickets Embla continues to have a supply of car wash tickets from Brown Bear. The cost is $5.00 each, and they are good for the basic wash. They can be upgraded to a better wash and wax for a few more dollars.

Recap of the November Meeting Grand Lodge President Janna Armbruster attended Embla's November meeting. During her time with us she shared a few inspirational thoughts and thanked Embla members for their many contributions to the community and to Grand Lodge.

President Nelson honored Embla's past presidents, thanked them for their service to Embla and for their support of her presidency. She presented each with a token of her appreciation. Those honored were: Esther Van Noy, 1995-96; Mardy Fairchild, 1997-98 and 2013-14; Harriet Swieso 2001-02; Carol Kemp, 2003-04; Marilyn Mahnke, 2007-08; Judith Willison, 2009-10; and Karen Bell, 2011-12. (Dena Iverson, 1999-2000; Delphine Johnson, 2005-06; Janet Ruud, 198990, were not in attendance.)

The chair of the Nominating Committee, Chris Engstrom, presented the 2017-18 slate of officers: President - Lisa Ottoson, Vice President - Carlene Garner, Judge - Diane Nelson, Secretary - Karen Kunkle, Cultural Director - Sarah Callow, Financial Secretary - Suzy Johnston, Treasurer - Chris Engstrom, Marshal - Wendy Neptun, Assistant Marshal Denice Andersen, Inner Greeter - Carol Else, Outer Greeter - Ray Ann Catron, Head Trustee - Sharon Groeneveld, TwoYear Trustee - Sue Bentz, and Three-Year Trustee - Carolyn Benson. There being no further nominations from the floor, President Nelson declared the nominations closed. Marilyn Mahnke moved to declare the presented slate become the elected officers for the 2017 year. The motion was seconded and adopted.

Treasurer Chris Engstrom reported that that the fall Cooking Classes had an attendance of over 100, and cleared about $250. Chris also reported that while she is still waiting for the last of the bills from the Nordic Festival, it appears Embla will see a profit of about $4,000.

There was no business conducted during the December Christmas party.

Karen Lynn was recently hospitalized and is now home recovering.

Sue Bentz fell from her ladder and is recovering from pains.

Both Mardy Fairchild and Clarene Johnson were hospitalized for pneumonia. Both are now back home recuperating.

Kondolerer (Condolences) Our sister Florence (Rorie) March passed away on November 4th. She was preceded in death by two of her sisters, Dagny Vaswig and Evangeline (Vangie) Billingsly.

Florence was born on August 28, 1917, in Holt, Minnesota. She passed away on November 4, 2016, at the age of 99. Her father was a pioneer pastor who homesteaded in Northern Minnesota and served 13 congregations, often with the young daughters accompanying him on their horse and buggy to sing in the services.

Florence (Rorie) March Rorie, Dagny, and Vangie formed the Nordic Trio, singing and telling stories of their Nordic heritage in many states, and they always wore their traditional Norwegian attire. Florence managed the Thrifty Troll house in Parkland which provided significant funds for the construction of the Scandinavian Cultural Center at PLU. She was also active in the Quilters ministry of her church, and she was an avid fan of the Mariners. At her home, she was the most gracious host for all the family gatherings, always greeting everyone with a big smile. Florence became a member of Embla on September 4, 1980.

Handverkerer

Being a member of Embla is more than going to a monthly meeting. A great way to really get to know your sisters is to take part in the various small groups that get together during the month between the meetings. Handverkere and rosemaling create items which are sold at the crafts table to increase the funds in our treasury. You can also learn more about your Norwegian heritage from the Genealogy Club, the Lekarring dance group, Norwegian cooking classes, and the Norwegian language group. By volunteering to be a hostess you can help decorate and set up for the dinner before the monthly meeting.

Handverkerer (handworkers or crafters) meets on the third Thursday of each month. The location rotates between Sharon's home in Puyallup and Chris' home in North Tacoma. You must live close to one or the other or check out possibilities for carpooling. They do crafts that are sold at the crafts table at meetings and nearby bazaars and festivals.

We have dancers who have a lengthy drive to get to Bethlehem Lutheran, so we ended up cancelling our December 5th "special practice" due to weather concerns-the snow never materialized!

The Leikarring held their annual dinner at the Emerald Queen Casino in Fife on MONDAY the 12th of December. We had a nice dinner and then a gift exchange. Judy Willison was in charge of making our reservations at EQC, and organized, along with her husband, Ross, our gift exchange this year.

Our next practice will be held on Monday, January 9th, for our performance at the 2017 Solveig Lodge Installation. The installation will be held on Saturday, Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Burien, starting at 10 AM on the of January 14th.

A yearly donation will be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church where the Leikarring holds their dance practices, on the 2nd and 4th Mondays each month. New dancers are always welcome! Contact Carol Voigt for more information (wynnjara8@q.com or 253-566-0405).

"scrapbooker extrodinaire." Now she has this lovely picture of herself with the Embla Christmas tree to put in her scrapbo¡ok. She's willing to help anyone with her advice and suggestions.

We had three great classes in October - thanks to all who helped, cooked, and attended!

We have secured the following dates for our 2017 Spring Cooking Classes: Saturday, March 11, Tuesday, March 21 and Wednesday, March 29. As usual, they will be held in the Scandinavian Cultural Center at Pacific Lutheran University.

Sharon Groeneveld, Ellen Campbell, and I welcome Nadine Lewtas to our committee. We will be having our planning luncheon in January. We would welcome all suggestions for Norwegian recipes and would love to have members volunteer to do a cooking demonstration.

What Is a Pouting Stool?

A pouting stool is a small stool or chair where a child is told to sit when pouting, or after a tantrum or some other type of misbehavior. Adults have found this a handy step stool for reaching something in a high cupboard.

Judie Miller and Mardy Fairchild have each recently painted a pouting stool with rosemaled designs. Judie's is in the "Red Embroidery" style and Mardy's is in the "Telemark" style. In a home where there is not a small child the pouting stool is a nice place to display a plant, a bowl of candy, or a stack of books.
