Upcoming Meetings I Events

We will celebrate Syttende Mai (seventeenth of May) at our meeting on MAY 5. Lisa Ottoson will tell us about this hol iday, which is Norway's Constitution Day. It is observed with parades and flag-waving in every city and town!

We'll have a musical treat at this meeting, too. Tora Hedges, a senior at PLU who is from Oslo, Norway, will sing for us. She majored in Vocal Performance with a minor in Hispanic Studies. She plans to get her master's degree in Jazz Performance in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Don't forget to bring items to donate to the Family Renewal Shelter. This month's suggestions: diapers (sizes 4 and 5), Pull-Ups (size large), baby wipes, shower gels, face wash/moisturizers, makeup remover, hair color and ethnic hair products.

Our JUNE 2 meeting will feature a celebration of the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, which falls on June 20 this year. It is called San kt Hans Fest in Norway, or Midtsommerfest. Norwegians love this day of sunshine, and spend it (and most of the night) dancing, eating, and singing on the shores of a fjord, around a huge bonfire.

There is no meeting in July, but be sure to come to the Summer Luncheon on July 9 . This is our annual event wh en we honor our senior rr_i.embe~_s. The theme for this year's luncheon is "Not Your Grandmother's Norway." Watch for your invitation in June! Children . . .are . welcome .

Message

We all welcomed spring with summer-like weather. No need to travel to Arizona to find good weather this year.

Our April meeting included a celebration of Embla's 109th Birthday. We had a wonderful meal and birthday cake for dessert, Our cultural program for the evening was Karen Haas' reenactment of Thea Foss. Members of the Thea Foss Lodge joined us for the program. Karen put on an enjoyable narrative of Thea Foss. Thea and her husband Andrew were both born in Norway and arrived in Tacoma in 1889. They built a maritime empire starting with used row boats.

Karen portrays Thea in 1912, the year of the first Foss tugboat. She reflects back on her life and looks forward into the future . Thea Foss took her place in a "man's world" at a time when few women could . Like other immigrants, she added her experiences to the rich blend that is Washington. We were enlightened and privileged to have Karen as a guest speaker.

The 40th Norwegian Heritage Festival (NHF) was held on Saturday, April 23, 2016, from 11 am until 3 pm at Pacific Lutheran University. The NHF was started with the first visit of Norway's King Olav V to acquaint the King with Northwest immigrant tradition and has continued annually. Our own Leikarring dancers performed with guest dancers from Solveig Lodge. I heard comments like "How do you remember so many dances?" Kudos to the Leikarring! ! Embla Members baked krumkake, sandbakkels, spritz and ginger spritz on April 21, and members baked many other varieties of Norwegian cookies at home for the festival. We also made our famous r¢mmegr¢t and wonderful open faced sandwiches. The craft table always has a wonderful array of items for sale. This is a fun day for all and creates so many opportunities for our members to become a part of this wonderful tradition. Mange takk to all were able to participate .

Constitution Day- Norway in Red, White, and Blue. May is the month when spring comes to Norway, so Constitution Day is a joyful celebration, full of hope and promise. The national holiday is primarily intended to celebrate the memory of the men who wrote N~rway's Constitution. Constitution Day has also become a day for children, a day of brass bands and national costumes. Mark your calendar for the Syttende Mai {17th of May) parade in Ballard .

We are so thrilled to have so many new members these past mol\ths. Embla #2 is a wonderful organization striving to preserve and promote our common heritage. Quite often when you become a member of a new organization it is difficult to feel a part of the group. I encourage all members, both new and not so new, to become involved: attend a business meeting; join the Kaffelabberas group {Coffee & Conversational Norwegian), Leikarring Norwegian Dance Group, or Handverkerer JHandworkers Group); take part in the cookie and lefse baking days; and come to (or demonstrate at) our cooking classes held in the spring and fall. These are just a few great ways to get to know your Embla sisters. Yes, we do consider ourselves sisters. Please call me at 253-891-7147 for more information.

Notes from the March Meeting Minutes: President Nelson announced that the 40th Annual Norwegian Heritage Festival would be held at Pacific Lutheran University, on Saturday April 23. She reminded members of the need for volunteers in many different areas and asked everyone to consider signing up to assist. She reminded those who will be preparing food and/or selling sandwiches and r¢mmegr¢t for the Norwegian Heritage Festival that they will need a Food Handlers Permit from Pierce County Health Department. Cookies for the Festival will be made at the PLU on Thursday, April 21, or cookies can be baked at home and donated to the Festival.

President Nelson gave the following reminders :

The annual Summer Luncheon, to honor members 75 years and over, will be held on July 9, 2016, at the SCC. Save "reusable stuff" for the September 2 & 3 Garage Sale. Embla's Auction will be the night before and any unsold items will go to the Garage Sale.

Nordic Festival, sponsored by Em bl a, will again be held at Edgemont Junior High School, on October 8, 2016. She further stated there will be a need for many volunteers to make the event a success.

Grand Lodge Convention will be held July 22 - 24, in San Francisco . There will be a meeting for those attending the Convention on April 6.

Joanne Gray announced that the Grand Lodge song book continues to be a work in progress.

Notes from the Aprll Meeting Minutes: The Grand Lodge Scholarship application process continues to be open.

The Family Renewal Shelter continues to express its gratitude for the many and varied items that Embla provides on a monthly basis.

Embla member Jan Run beck has let us know that Hans Bergman was her mother's uncle by marriage. (Jan's mother, Doris Runbeck, was a member of Embla .) This is indeed a small town! Thanks for the postscript, Jan! .... ed.

Christmas Cards for Sale!

It's never too early to buy Christmas cards! Embla's Past Presidents Club is selling Series 3 of our beautiful "Old Norway Cards", which depict Esther Van Nay's antique post cards. The Christmas cards are now available for sale at our meetings at the Library Cart. There are two different sets (four different cards in each set), and the cost is $5 per package. Past Presidents' April Luncheon and Meeting Embla's past presidents met at the Pine Cone Cafe for our April meeting. President Carol Kemp was hostess and chose the theme, "Singing in the Rain." The centerpiece was a Hallingdal doll, a mini umbrella, and a child's rain boot filled with azaleas and tulips. The favor was a bird and its egg in a nest with a little umbrella covering all.

The main item of business was a discussion of our Old Norway Christmas card sets which will soon be on sale. The club continues to support the Family Renewal Center and the Grand Lodge Endowment Fund.

Past President Carol Kemp decorated our luncheon table with flowers in a rain boot, a Norwegian doll, paper umbrellas, and bird nests as a favor. We all enjoyed the lovely decorations, conversation, lunch and our meeting.

SUNSHINE REPORT Condolences Esther Marie Oliver died on ~unday;April 3, 2016. Esther was born in Aitkin,

Minnesota, on January 3, 1922 . She _w_as originally named Astrid Marie by her Norwegian parents. They later Americanized her name to Esther Marie, as they were so proud to be Americans. She married Glenn in 1941 and while he was serving in WWII she worked as a laboratory technician. After the war they settled in Tacoma.

Esther was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she served in several church circles and sang in the choir. She loved gardening - especially roses and calla lilies. She enjoyed cooking Norwegian meals and desserts for her family. Esther was a gifted pianist who could play complex arrangements by ear. She treasured her life experience and enjoyed photography as a means to capture the memories and to document her family and their special times together.

A memorial service for Esther was held on Friday, April 8. She and her daughters, Cynthia Oliver-Moffett and Elizabeth Cook, joined Embla on November 3, 1981. The lodge charter was draped at our April meeting in her memory.

Hazel G. (Harstad) Starkey passed away on February 21, 2016, at the age of 91. For her career, she worked at Tacoma General Hospital. Hazel became a member of Embla on January 4, 1979. [More about Hazel in the next issue.]

The following sisters have lost a family member in the last several months. Our sincere sympathy goes out to them and their families.
