HISTORICAL SKETCH

By PROFESSOR W. C. SNACKENBERG, Ph. D. Almost everyone,

some time or other, wants to know how things began. How did

this come to be? How did we get ti,is way? What does i t all mean? These are the com­ monest questions of almost of all of us, and not only of children. So we are interested in the family tree. We wont to learn where our people came from, and why and how. In the process we are likely to discover an increasing concern for other peoples and nations, and the story that lies behind their present faces. It comes to us that all the peoples of the earth, each in their own ways, are reflected in the art and music, the literature and the laws, the customs and folklore, and the various institutions which have come to be recognized as typically their own.

As members and friends of the Pacific Lutheran College family, our interest in the family

tree is

therefore only natural. We see our college as the flower of a Christian

people with a distinct cultural pattern; a people who have moved into a significant place in the Itream of western civilization. The more we delve into the origins and past of our beloved Alma Mater, the more clear does its meaning become for us, and the more pur­ poseful its develapment. Actually, the beginnings were simple.

has been accomplished in Pacific Lutheran College: the academic years, the dedications of buildings, the i"auguration of new projects, the great festivals, the doily chapel serv­ ices-ali has been done

THE TRIUNE GOD.

A postoral conference held in Decorah, Iowa, on October 14, 1890, in response to requests for help in the work of building the church on the Pacific Coast, resolved to send the Rev. Mr. Bjug Harstad to Pugpt Sound. The intention was to establish a schaol. At the same time, thp Synod proposed to organize the Pacific Coastal region into a District of the church. It was the beginning of a much intensified activit y , for while there were many Norsemen in the West, there were only a few pastors in this summer of 1890.

Pastor Harstad, who had arrived in November, 1890, was ready by December 11 to form a corporation to be called the Pacific Lutheran University Association. Construction of the Old Moin was begun in March of the following spring, and the cornerstone was laid on October 4, 1891. The first bricks were mortared into place on Jonuary 9, 1892, b y Peter Lindekrans, a Swede who had learned the trade i n Norway. A month later, the first pro­ fessor was cal!ed-Pastor Carla Sperati, who was at that time serving a parish in Bel· lingham.

FIRST MEETING IN 1892 In August of 1892, as the first meeting which is clearly designated as that of a Board of Trustees, it was decided that there should be four divisions in the University-Classical, Scientific, Business, and Nor.no) Courses of instruction to be offered on the Academy level.

The trustees also thought it might be well to institute a children's school where religion would be taught in addition to the common secular subjects. This Napoleonic concept of education was kept in force until the high school division was finally closed in 1944. That earliest Board could not agree, however, on the problem of having women professors.

This weighty matter they !urned over to the "Catalog Committee."

The roof was on by the winter of 1892 and the 200,000 shingles which hod been th.. contribution of Pastor Jorgenson's congregation in Stanwood were all in place. It was in the midst of great rejoicing that the Board of Trustees held its first meeting in the build­ ing on February 8, 1893. On March 2, Postor Harstad was elected President of the Uni­ versity, and shortly thereafter resigned his position as President of the Minnesota District of the Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. No sooner had he done thi., however. than h., wa. elected President of

HISTORICAL SKETCH The year 1893 is. fE'membered across the nation for the severe financial panic which caw�ed so much distress. These were hardl time�. too, for the University and its trustees.

It was in fact not known certainly whether the institution would ever open. That event hod been postponed twice already, and in 1893 the money was gone, the contributions hod fallen off, and th.. sale of lots hod slowed almost to a standstill. That the leaders persisted in the face of these trying obstacles attests to the faith which motivated them. Their work was to the Glory of God. They fought an.

DEDICATED IN 1 894 Pacific lutheran University was dedicated on October 14, 1894, the property of which was valupd nt $50,000. The celebration crowd heard the dedicatory address of the Pres­ ident of thp Church, the Rt. Rev. Mr. U. V. Koren. It was a great day-with many speeches, �ome impromptu poetry, choirs, songs, bond mu�ic, and much "visiting." The Ladies Aid served everyone with food, and in the evening the new electric lights in Old Main were tried far thp first tim". Classe; began on October 25, with an enrollment of thirty students, many of wham were immigrants who wanted to learn English.

Pastor Harstad had so many burdens to attend to, and so many duties thrust upon him that it was necessary to call another man as president to relieve him. Such a call was spnl to Ihe Rev. Mr. Ole Gronsberg of Son Francisco during the summer of 1895. Paslar Gransberg carried on until Ihe summer of 1897. After an inlerim of several months, dur­ ing which Pastor Harstad again took up the duties of President, Professor Nils J. Hong, a member of the faculty, was elected to the position. He served as President until 1917 -two decodes of great importance in the life of the institution.

The first year of Mr. Hong's Presidency was carried forth on a tuition plan without any help from the Corporation except for $300.00 for advertising. There were now only a few aver thirty students,

and the prospects looked pretty dim,

but President Hong

thought he could work out a formula for successful operation. It was decided to change the name of the school to Pacific Lutheran Academy and Business College, and to place strong emphasis upon Iraining which would lead into successful business careers. By 1899, a feeling of gEnuine optimism pervaded the almasphere 01 Ihe school, and its work was recognized 10 be of a vpry high caliber. The student body had grown to 156 by 1900, and it was plain that the institution needed a gymnasium, so the second building was added to the campus. At a cost of $90.00, a frame building 32'x60' was erected directly behind the Old Main. In December of 1900, President Hang was elected President of the Corporation, and now for the first time, the founder, the Rev. Harstad, would not be a member of the Board, but would continue as Pastor and professor.

Life at PLA from 1900 to the outbreak of the Four Years' War may be said to have been vigorous and healthy. The student body continued to grow. The Alumni Association, an organization which has played such an important part in the institution's growth, wa5 first formed in 1902. Down through the years it has been aclive and Iloyal in the affairs of the college. The Homecoming of 1909 stands as one of the biggesl celebralions of Ihe entire period. The enthusiasm of the group continued, for three yeors loter, the Alumni subscribed $4,300.00 (a large sum in those days) in order to build a new gymnasium on Ihe campus. During 1912 the gym was built, and, of course, in 1913, the annual Alumni Festival was held within its gaily decorated walls-a proud addition indeed.

ACADEMIC GROWTH The school by this time had rea'on to be proud. While the equipment had always been somewhat meager, the work done had long since been fully recognized and accred­ ited at the academy level. The Washington Agricultural College in Pullman, and Ihe Uni, versity of Washington in Seattle had both given high cammendalion to the

academic

standard. which were being maintained at PLA. Indeed, the University of Oregon and ihe University of North Dakota both indicated Ihat they believed same of their finesl sludents were coming from Ihe lilll" school in Parkland. And 01 luther College, Decorah, Iowa, the porent institution, graduate5 of PlA were allowed to enter the junior closs. A fine record was being achieved under the leadership of Professor Hang.

The earliest athletic competition recorded occurred in 1902, the year Ole Stuen came, when PLA played the Skookum Club of Tacoma in Basketball. PlA won the game, but no score was kept. The oldest rivalry with any team now being played is with Whitworth,

PLC TRADITIONS This is the era, too, during which many of PLC's traditions were begun: The Kicking Post, out "eyond t�e old Chataqua grounds, and Campus Day in the spring being per­ haps the best remem"ered of all, Nobody knows where the original Kicking Post is, or when and how it was first put down, but legends have it that the original was planted by a roving Viking. Whether this is true or not has not been certainly determined, but that Viking spirit has long pervaded the campus. Campus Day had a more prosaic origin.

The Governor of Washington in 1912 declared a holiday in all schools in honor of "Good Roads." At PLA, the occasion was seized upon to beautify the campus, lime the baseball field, and smooth out the tennis courts under the supervision of Coach Ole Stuen. All Gladiators still turn to, on the appointed day, for work and fun.

Pacific lutheran College is the descendent and heir of several institutions of learning which hod been established in the Northwest by Norwegian Lutheran Church groups. The United Norwegian Lutheran Church began in 1902 to plan a school for the Northwest, but by 1905 had determined to build twa of them, one in Spokane, which was to come first, and one in Everett. Spokane College was opened in 1907, Columbia College in 1909.

There had been other Norwegian Lutheran activity as well. In 1894 some men of what came to be called the Lutheran Free Church opened a school in Poulsbo. While thi.• school operated for only two years, the Free Church established Bethania College in Everett in 1904. Spokone College proved to be the strongest of the three, for its work continued on until 1929, at which time its records were transferred to Parkland. The property in Spo· kone was maintained by the Church, however, until 1954. Bethania was closed in 1917, the war and the close proximity of Columbia College being too much to contend with.

throughout the land, and not least in the Northwest. At first it was thought best to move operations to Everett. In line with thot policy, the faculty and students of PLA were moved to Columbia College for the year 1918-19. This arrangement did not prove satisfoctory, howev�r, ond pending the solution of the problem, no school was conducted during the year 19 19·1920.

The solution came in the summer of

1920, when the Pacific District of the NLCA

resolved to incorporate the Pacific Lutheran College Association as a permanent amalga­ mation. The revitalized school opened its doors on October 4, 1920 with Professor J. U. Xavier acting as Presid�nt. He had already been associated with the institution since 1902 ond would continue his work until 1940. In 1953, his nearly forty yeors of service were recognized by the presentation of an honorary doctorate.

HAUGE HERE IN 1920 That first year under Acting President Xavier was in many ways a new beginning, There were six faculty members and sixty-eight students, and among those present was a man who will ot the end of 1955 have completed thirty-five years of faithful servic� to Pacific Lutheran College-Dean Philip E. Hauge. The old dream of President Hong was going to be fulfilled, for when the Rev. 010 J. Ordol was called to the Presidency, the Junior College Division was established. During the next half-dozen years, the Normal Department was inspected, and upon having kept pace with the general improvement in educational institutions in Washington, it was accredited by the State Department of Edu­ cation. President Ordal, with the help of some fund-raising experts (among whom was the Rev. Mr. S. C. Eastvold, at that time Pastor in Madison, South Dakota) succeeded in gathering together a modest endowment fund.

HISTORICAL SKETCH istrar in Luther College, was installed as sixth President of the College by Dr. J. A. Ao,· goard, representing the Church. It was with a spirit of great faith and determination that Dr. Tingelstad took hold of the work. The struggling little institution had been plagued by financial difficulties from its earliest days, and in order to help solve the problem, Dr. Tingel,tad proposed the organization of the P.Le. Development Association, which it was hoped would awoken the constituency and the Alumni to a larger effort. Large plans were laid. A campus survey wos undertaken by the

twenty·five year basis, but none could foresee that only ten months away lay "Block Friday" of October, 1929. The Great Depression, as everyone knows, was signalized by the total collapse of the Stock Markets, and the history of America, indeed the world, was going to be altered. With the loss of over 50 billion dollars in assets in the nation, with 15 million men unemployed, with business failures reaching unbelievable numbers doily, with hundreds of private schools and colleges closing their doorsl it is something of (] miracle that Pacific lutheran College was in fact kept in operation. Nevertheless, President Tingel. stad and the Board, with the support of a small band of dedicated professors who chose to make unheard of sacrifices, managed to keep going. clporly

cumstances called for desperate decisions, and it may well be said that in these days when the amazing labyrinth of deficit financing had to be entered, the life of the college was in the balance, hanging as it were by a spider·silk thread. It became literally a hand·to· mouth existence, with support coming from

poor constituency only in driblets.

De'pite it all, foundations of greatness were being laid, and that family spirit which has become so important at PLC grew richer than ever. Dauntless, the Board of Trustees recommended and the Corporation adopted a proposal to establish a full four·year col· legiate program in 1931. Within eight years the plan was put into effect, and the first Bachelor's degrees were conferred at Commencement, in 1940. The college received per­ manent accreditation as a four-year college of liberal arts with a teacher training pro­ gram in 1947.

Every year strength was added to the faculty; even the student body was doubled (to nearly 400) by 1937. The President's Residence was built in 1930, the chemistry and biology laboratories were completed in the basement of the gymnasium by 1931, and large additions were acquired for the library. In 1930 the American Lutheran Church cantrib· uted $5,000 to the college, and placed its first representative on the faculty. This was a beginning of that inter.synodical cooperation and support (which could be traced back through Spokane College) in which Pacific Lutheran College has been a real pioneer in America. Shortly after that, the college gained the support of the Augustana Synod as well. In 1937, Governor Clarence I>'.artin of Washington broke ground for a new library which was erected during the following year. It was the direct result of a campaign for

$100,000, about half of which was subscribed by the citizens of Tacoma.

ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS Perhaps the most spf'ctacular progress at PLC was the meteoric rise of Gladiator athletic prowess under the inspired hand of Coach Clifford Olson.

1929, when the Glads were playing Junior College and high school teams with moderate success, Coach Olson in the short space of ten years built men and teams which not only conquered regional opponents, and gained championships, but captured the entire na­ tion's fancy with magnificent record·breaking performances. The great days of 1939, 1940,

1941 have been well rehearsed by hundreds of Glads and thousands upon thou,ands of PLC suppartp.rs. Especially in football, whether it were AII·American recognition, toppled notional attendance records, broken notional scoring, yardage, or pass-completion records -all seemed the mare astonishing when it was realized that these Giant·killers had not even a football field nor a goal past worthy of the name. None would ever forget the names of Harshman, Tammervik, Plaff, and Sigurdson. Through it all the college moffa, "Build for Character," had never been lost sight of.

Then came the war against Hitler's hordes. Soan the male students could be counted on both hands, and the women, too, had entered the Armed Forces or the Defense effort.

Eostvold, w h o had been serving a parish in Eau C l a ire, Wisconsin, was installed as seventh President of t h e col­ lege. H e came with a tireless, iron constitution, a profound determination to build up the faltering college, a n d $40,000-more money than the Board could remember seei n g a l l i n o n e l u m p . B u t i t would have t o do miracles i f i t were t o cou n t . I m mediately President Eastvold set to work a nd soon had visited practica l ly every luthera n parish west of the Ca scades, a n d Jcores of them i n I d a ho, Montana, a n d Alaska, telling the story of Pacific Lutheran College and its task i n Christian Education. His asto u n d i n g energy and perse­ veranc" made the effort of those diffirult days what has become the most heroic odyssey i n the a n nals of American Lutheranism. But this was o n ly part of it. Thousands of letters were written, the Old Main was repai red and refurbished, the grounds were i m p roved, and everyth i n g was set i n order for what people

Large i ncreases i n t h e popu lation, a n d the enormous migrations and reorganizations of fa m i l ies, particularly i n the Pacific States creoted on u n p a r a l leled crisis i n education.

In the sam Yf'ar, 1 947, a fine Science Hall was erected; then came the tremendous Memorial Gym­ nasium (the gift of Tacoma and some of its leading citizens). The Old Main was made fire­ resistant, comp leted from top to bottom. its services expanded a n d i ncreased in every way.

The library was finished in 1948, i n c l u d i ng steel stacks for Ihe holdings, and the interior of the beautiful rea d i n g room. I n 1952 came the mighty new Chapel with its wings for M usic and Speech Arts, its 1238 seat-capa city auditorium, its 75-foot high stage, its eq u i p­ ment and instruments to match. Pacific luthera n College was b u l g i n g out at the seams.

gone in increasing n u m bers into the teaching profession, the m i n istry of the Holy Gospel, the practice of medicin e and the law, and into countless vocations of significant p u blic service. They have been esta b l ished os leaders w h erever they have p l a nted themselves.

The key to these successes is to be fou n d i n the fact that Pacific Lutheran College has been interested i n persons as individuals, and throughout its history it has

known

the

worth a n d the predicament of a man. From its h u mb le beg i n n i ngs, PLC has achieved per­ manent accred itation, has become a member of the Association of American C o l leges; its students may select from more than a score of academic disciplines for their major study, a n d its faculty of nearly sixty sincere C h ristian men and women, have made enviable attainments i n the academic world. Its student body i n 1953 n u m bered over 1300 men and women from all aver t h e world. At its Sixtieth An niversary it has b u i ld i ngs conservallvely estimated at $3,678,000, with grounds that make its campus one of the loveliest to be fou nd a nywhere.

The most recent decade of the history of Pacific lutheran C o l lege has been its g rea t­ est. It stands on the thr... hold of a new day of service to the co m m u n ity, the state and the church, and true to the vision of its founders, it knows and professes that the Christian way of life is the only sure hope of earth.
