Revitalising the Disused Railway Line in Sheffield’s Most Deprivated Neighbourhood
‘Unity on Rails’ aims to revitalise the disused viaduct structure by introducing a new building typology designed to support future transportation, community activities, and private counselling.
This initiative addresses the diverse needs of the Burngreave community, particularly people seeking sanctuary who are experiencing mental health challenges due to prolonged delays and complicated procedures in the current immigration process. The new station will bridge the existing socio-economic disparities between the two sides of the railway line and connect the more deprived areas
Innovative transportation solutions, such as trackless trams, will be introduced as a new mode of transport, complemented by a new biking route on the viaduct that stretches from the existing Grey to Green scheme nearby. ‘Sheffield Connect’ station will serve as a first point of arrival for newcomers, helping them to integrate and learn about local culture. This project collaborates with the Andalus Community Centre to address the needs and challenges of asylum seekers in Sheffield. The building layout is designed to guide them through various activities and support services without relying solely on verbal communication.

Year: 2021-2022 l Location: Merthyr Tydfil, Wales l Academic Works l Key Programme: Rhino and AutoCAD
The project focuses on creating a selfsufficient community that further reestablishes their connection with food. Set in the future, it foresees a time when precision agriculture becomes more widespread with increased awareness of the need to be sustainable.
It proposes a multi-function building fitted with aeroponic farms and soil research facilities in hopes that it may restore the land of Merthyr Tydfil. Public spaces including open-air markets, and a restaurant will be accessible in the ground floor to promote farm-to-table dishes. An experimental plant field will provide
an inclusive activity for the community to plant and harvest their plants along with pick-your-own fruit and vegetable aeroponic farms to not only support the local farmers, but to provide the freshest and ripe produce that are possibly better quality than in supermarkets. An anaerobic digestion plant will be also constructed to power the facilities, utilising the city waste as its power source. I hope that this project demonstrates a new perspective on climate emergency against the carbon footprint that imported food generates and provide a holistic solution and food security for communities without arable land.

The project mainly uses glulam and crosslaminated timber for the facade and load bearing structures. Glulam timber is shown to be durable, provides an aesthetic and welcoming vibe as well as a characteristic value of the building. The timber, a carbonnegative material, would also be originated from Wales to reduce carbon emissions.

During the year-out experience, I extensively learnt wider aspects of architecture, especially how the choice of an architect’s could impact the user’s wellbeing and flow of the design. The point to take away from the practice is a variety of ways to tackle problem for different projects. The design process includes multiple site visits and design negotiation with the clients followed by liaising with multidisciplinary teams to
achieve the promised outcome suitable for their budget. Apart of presenting design options and 3D visualisation, I was given the task to prepare technical drawings, researched appropriate material construction and be able to cooperate effectively with the team. By participating in many different projects, I have seen how each piece of knowledge from university have helped me throughout my work.
One of my responsibilities in interior design has benefited my architecture career greatly as I applied a holistic approach and visualised more coherent space in consideration to smaller details that would affect the client’s way of living. I have noticed an intrinsic connection after working simultaneously in both fields since they could influence one another greatly,
especially when it comes to structural design. I liaised with my supervisor, the architect of the project, and the contractors to alter some design in order to propose a layout that offers a better living experience suitable for the client lifestyle. For example, changing the location of the door in the kitchen to accommodate more storage for the family of five
or considering a bespoke joinery for their utility to make the space more organised. I attended client meetings and was entrusted to create mood boards, joinery plans and chose materials for the design concept. Different material combination expresses distinct characteristics of the clients and creates a personalised space called ‘home’.

Maison Foo, makers of theatre, art and community projects, develop creative opportunities for people seeking sanctuary in the UK to feel welcomed, find moments of belonging, and be heard and empowered. Their latest project ‘Story Chefs’ builds on the success of projects such as ‘Seat At Our Table’ (2021) and ‘Meet Your Neighbour’ (2022) which celebrate the stories the group has to share
through the sharing of food, as a way of building connections with the wider community. Through this Live Project, we worked with The Creative Sanctury Group to develop a brand identity to take Story Chefs to the next level, developing a ‘pop-up’ kitchen and storytelling performance space for the group to share their food and stories with the public in different settings throughout the UK.

Local Material Website and Engagement Event at Derby’s Making Festival
This website was created in collaboration with the studio team to investigate current and future sustainable building materials in Sheffield, specifically those that can be transported via our site’s railway line.
It has since been handed over to ‘Built Environment Students for Climate Action (BESCA)’, a studentled society that aims to bridge the gap between education and the climate emergency as a resource for future students.
