PLMSFI REACHES ANOTHER MILESTONE AT BIG DAY CELEBRATION TO WELCOME ITS NEW SCHOLARS

T

HE PLMSFI reached anew another milestone after surpassing the number of continuing and new scholars to an all time high of 130 during its Big Day celebration last 15 September 2023 at the Justo Albert Auditorium to welcome the Foundation’s fresh batch of scholars for the SY 2023-2024 under the theme Celebrating Success by Building a Home of Excellence. This number may seem unprecedented considering the PLMSFI’s financial standing in the early 2000 with only a few thousands in the bank and a handful of scholars on its roster. PLMSFI has indeed travelled far and accomplished big since its inception in 1999. Thanks to its benevolent benefactors from the corporate world and from PLM alumni who have partnered and stayed with the Foundation all these years never tiring to walk side by side with PLMSFI towards the realization of its vision that no student should be deprived of a good college education because of poverty.

This milestone, PLMSFI hopes, should set the bar as measure for all, to aim and dream high, and worked for it to at least equal the

effort towards the next milestone. PLMSFI, thus, presented a program fitting for the Big Day to honor our continuing and new scholars with the presence of highly esteemed guests

to speak and inspire them with powerful messages by weight of their knowledge and experience in their respective firmament.

BROADENING OUR PARTNERSHIP BREEDS MORE PLMSFI SCHOLARS

A

S we shape the sustainable future of our Foundation amidst turbulent times, the PLMSFI has successfully carried out a key strategy of forging more partnerships that have given birth to more scholars which recorded a new high in our number of scholars this year.

Recently, PLMSFI has partnered with Rotary Club of Makati Salcedo (RCMS) thru their GenHope Scholarship Project.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between PLMSFI and RCMS last August 1, 2023 in the presence of PLM President Emmanuel Leyco, PLMSFI President Terry Galvante, Jr. and RCMS President Pamela-Ruth Esquivel. As a former PLMSFI scholar, Ms. Esquivel initiated the GenHope Scholarship Project that will provide financial assistance to ten (10) scholars starting AY 2023-2024 and every year thereafter. RCMS will also support and finance the Board review and examination expenses of their scholars and provide them employment in the future.

On September 7, 2023, the PLMSFI also forged a partnership with PLM College of Nursing Alumni Association (PLMCN AA) which committed to sponsoring five (5) Nursing scholars starting AY 2023-2024.

This was made possible through the initiative of our very own Trustee, Mary Ann

Abuedo.

To express our deepest gratitude to our existing and new benefactors, we celebrated face-to-face our Big Day 2023 with the theme, “Celebrating Success by Building a Home of Excellence” last September 15, 2023. The Foundation welcomed 130 scholars for AY 2023-2024: 71 continuing scholars from AY 2022-2023; 45 new PLMSFI scholar-recruits; 10 new scholars by GenHope; and 5 new scholars by PLMCN AA. Surprisingly, this number of scholars is 16 % more from 113 scholars last year.

The Big Day program was also an opportunity to present to our guests, PLM officials, benefactors, PLMAAI Trustees and friends, our 37 graduates of 2023, with 14 Magna Cum Laude and 14 Cum Laude graduates of various courses.

It was a day of inspirational and congratulatory wishes and messages from President Emmanuel Leyco, President Reuben Abante of PLMAAI, Trustee Gloria Gil, who conveyed her message from California, USA, Pamela-Ruth Esquivel, an Accounting graduate-scholar in 2011 and now a benefactor, and the heartening words of appreciation from a scholargraduate, Shairamagne Kua. during the Big Day Celebration must have impressed in the minds of our benefactors and guests our Foundation’s clear policy of training youth leaders and succession planning for our Foundation. This policy is reflected in our continuing training workshops, such as the one we conducted on the theme “Transitioning to the Professional World 2023” held last August 14 and 15, 2023. It was an enhanced training workshop like that of last July 2022, with our very kind and generous Trustee, Ms. Gloria Gil, footing again the bill for the 2nd year. Our 37 graduating scholars attended the training workshop to prepare them for their next journey of getting employed and practice their profession.

As PLMSFI continues to perform its mission of helping the deserving students of PLM to finish their college education, help their family overcome poverty and be productive citizens of our society, our Foundation has established a ‘sustainable brand’ that has attracted like-minded individuals and organizations to forge viable partnerships with us. Indeed, more partnerships, more scholars!

LET US PERSEVERE IN THE BANI WORLD strengthen their emotional intelligence in

N my closing speech during the PLMSFI Big Day last September 15, 2023, I challenged our new PLMSFI scholars to persevere in their studies under the new world of BANI ( Brittle, Anxious, Non-linear and Incomprehensible). It has replaced the world of VUCA (Volatile, Uncertainty, Complex and Ambiguous) which was coined by the US military during the post-cold war period. In a BANI world, systems are fragile, people are anxious due to uncertainty, cause and effect relationships are non-linear and complexity can be overwhelming.

The sudden spread of covid 19 which disrupted our university operations and lifestyle is a concrete manifestation of a BANI world we now live in. The threat of our university being delisted from the Unified Financial Assistance System (UNIFAST) program of the Commission of Higher Education (CHED) had created anxiety among our City Hall officials and

our studentry. As this delistment would endanger the continuing funding of our university students, the Board of Visitors under the Manila City Council had caused the removal of the PLM President.

Also, the opposing views on the nature and implementation of the “institutional, fiscal and academic autonomy” of the PLM, being a charted university for Filipino students, both Manila residents and non-residents, have entertained some incomprehensible thoughts among us about the interpretation of the charter creating the PLM. This caused some divisiveness among the ranks of the administration, faculty and studentry. In the face of these events, PLMSFI stood its ground and persevered in its efforts of doing what is right.

During the recent pandemic which is a clear manifestation of a BANI world, PLMSFI exhibited resilience in the face of serious challenges and adaptive leadership in setting the direction of the Foundation in uncertain times. We were the first organization to positively enact measures to support our own scholars-- providing financial support, gadgets and additional allowances so they could cope with the requirements of online learning. We conducted training workshops not only to prepare our scholars for their future employment but also to

coping with the volatile conditions as a result of the pandemic.

As we try to survive from our present economic problems, our general studentry have become financially brittle and anxious of what crisis is in the offing. The brittleness of ideas and technology such as Chat-GPT demands constant reevaluation, while heightened anxiety underscores the importance of robust risk management.

In coping with the increasing demand for scholarship grants, the Foundation has forged new partnerships such as Rotary Club of Makati-Salcedo (RCMS) and PLM College of Nursing Alumni Association (PLMCNAA) to be able to register a high of 130 scholars for academic year 2023-24.

This has reduced the risk of not being able to fund the increasing requirements of the Foundation’s scholarship program.

As we navigate this BANI world, the PLMSFI is committed to continually rethinking its strategies, adapting its approaches and developing new coping mechanisms so as to pursue its mission according to the signs to times. In concluding my speech, I exhorted our scholars to persevere in their studies as they are in good hands with PLMSFI whose Board of Trustees have successfully led them in our new world of BANI.

AST 14 October 2023, the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila Alumni Association Inc. (PLMAAI) celebrated the 16th Anniversary of its Founding at the Quezon City Sports Club, with the theme Karunungan, Kaunlaran at Kadakilaan. This event, like in the past, co-incides with the giving of the Ginintuang Ani Awards to PLM’s Distinguished Alumni selected by a Board of Jurors who by themselves were also awardees years prior. Nine (9) PLM alumni awardees received their respective trophies and certificates - emblematic of their excellence and achievements in their respective fields and contribution to the betterment of society and giving honor to the PLM. and one (1) from Atty. Malubay. T’was a delight and relief to be witness to such special gesture and reciprocation from two beautiful and generous people. All these years the PLMSFI has consistently worked hard to gain new benefactors to sustain the financial standing of the Foundation and to make it viable for it to be able to add more to its roster of deserving and qualified scholars in need of financial assistance. Under such a benevolent environment, PLMSFI is confident of its ability to be able to achieve more and thrive to ensure that it lives up to its vision that no student should be deprived of a good college education because of poverty. Fittingly indeed to accord respect to our alumni and all stakeholders, “Uniting the Graduates, honoring the Achievers.”

AMOUS British personality, John Barton, once wrote that one can never step into the same book twice because one is different each time he reads it.

This is the exact same sentiment that I have with the conduct of the TRANSITIONING TO THE PROFESSIONAL WORLD 2023. This is 2nd year that the training workshop is conducted by PLMSFI for its graduating scholars with the aim of equipping them with the knowhow, skills and right attitude as they transition from academic to industry. With the necessary tool, the foundation believes that the scholars will have better chances of head-starting the careers that they desire.

Held last August 14 and 15, 2023, the workshop was attended by “grad-waiting” scholars and incoming 4th year scholars. The planning time for this year’s workshop was rather short because the decision to hold it came a bit late.

Nonetheless, as workshop director and training head, I was not too worried as there was already a template from last year’s event. “A few changes in the order of the program and the speakers will certainly make the event different from the 2022 workshop”, I told myself.

The workshop participants were very fortunate to have the most “fit” resource persons discussing with them current trends in the human recruitment landscape. What better way to kick off the training workshop than to set the tone of the 2-day event with an inspirational message from a very successful PLM alumna in the field of real estate, Ms. Gloria Gil. Ms. Gil proved that the world can be conquered by perseverance, dedication and hard work as she spoke to the participants from the other side of the world, the United States of America. Thanks to the power of technology, such is possible.

After discussing the expectations and design of the workshop, the workshop officially commenced with the discussion of the GenZer’s Career Outlook by this author. After surfacing to their consciousnesses the collective characterization of their generation, scholars were taught the process of choosing a career path, something which only the scholars themselves can make based on their choices.

Such a document should make an outstanding impression for the applicant to even have a shot at the job that they want. The young and dynamic human resource practitioner, Ms. Josette Vielka “JV” Periera, emphasized the importance of a truthful and succinct resume in securing the chance for a job interview.

Dr. Judilynn Solidum, a veteran educator with decades of experience in interviewing applicants in the academic setting, gave the scholars tips in acing job interviews or any interview for that matter. She reminded the scholars that both professional skills and soft skills will bring them to heights they were aiming for. More than skills needed to do well during interviews, Doc Judy, as she is fondly called, shared advice for the scholars to consider so they can also “win” in life.

several scholars assumed the role of applicants being interviewed, were participated in

by PLMSFI mentors who are themselves pillars of the industry where they belong to and have years of extensive experience in the management realm. These PLMSFI mentors included mass media industry moguls, Mr. Bob Del Rosario (joining via Zoom), Mrs. Edith Del Rosario and Mrs. Wilma Zetazate; MERALCO top executive, Mr. Rolly Cuico; supply chain management expert, Mr, Jovy Jader; PLMSFI President and DoTr executive Mr. Terry Galvante, US-based Nurse Practitioner Ms. Mary Anne Abuedo (who joined the workshop via Zoom from New Jersy, USA), and SM Corporation finance executive Mrs. Winnie Cuico.

PLMSFI BOT and Social Worker John Lemuel Gardose joined them too. PLMSFI BOT and realtor Jaspher Royce Dela Cruz served as moderator for the RTD. The simulation might not have been close to the real thing, but this author thinks that it was the next best activity to set the scholars’ psyche for entry to the professional world.

Borrowing the words of philosopher Heraclitus, I will also say “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.” I may have conceptualized this training workshop but the effect and satisfaction it has on me is different each time it is conducted. The excitement and positive vibes I had in this year’s implementation of the workshop is unlike like that of last year, 2022.

Worth saying that both gave me satisfaction and joy after concluding the workshops. I am so looking forward to the workshop in 2024 which will definitely have new twists and innovations.

SOARING WITH WISDOM

OTENTIAL is having or showing the capacity to become or develop into something in the future.

Ever since I could remember, I’ve always been told that I had potential. At first, like all enthusiastic young achievers, those comments motivated me and became my driving force to achieve all that I could accomplish.

Over time, the fears that cage us in our adolescence forced me to look at those comments in a darker light. Being told I had potential became daunting - to be something in the future but what is that ‘something’? Something great?

Something disappointing? To have potential is a reward in itself. To have potential recognized by others is heart-warming. However, to have potential expected by others becomes less of a reward and more of an intimidating challenge. To have potential - to fly high or to fall deep. In our society based on meritocracy, we strive for the former.

To have potential is great because support is already assured and guaranteed. However, I speak for all my fellow academic achievers when I say that these scenarios often shape our thinking that failure is never an option, and mistakes simply must not exist.

Easier said than done, we have to break out of that shell. The expectations of others can be quite burdensome, but my fellow scholars, both old and new, hear me when I say this – though pressuring and scary, the growth of

PLMSFI SCHOLARS GRADUATE WITH LATIN HONORS

T is not unusual for PLMSFI Scholars to graduate with Latin Honors that it may seem to look like the norm rather than the exception. With that, PLMSFI proudly announces that for SY 2022-2023, out of the total of 37 graduates, 28 received Latin Honors, thus, giving pride to their Alma Mater, the Foundation and benevolent benefactors. This impressive numbers reflect the dedication and commitment to academic excellence of these aspiring professionals. Dedicating a Golden Wedding Anniversary to a Noble Cause

HILE planning for the September 2023 issue of the SFI Chronicle, we did not expect that along the way we would be surprised by a development that borders on serendipity and providence. In recent years, concerns about funding for and sustainability of the Foundation have always hovered over our heads. Sustainability in the sense of continuing efforts in search of new donor partners and the possibility of passing the baton to a dynamic and younger generation to ensure the strength and durability of the Foundation to face the challenges of the future in a rapidly changing world.

In this way, we will be assured that the PLMSFI will continue to serve and abide by the foremost principles upon which it was founded - that no student should be deprived of a good college education because of poverty.

This brief as herein authored by a fellow trustee and Ginintuang Ani Awardee Ms. Wilhelmina Cuico is a fitting denouement that indeed serendipity and providence comes when the pursuit of a goal is for a noble cause. Thus she writes: Celebrating fifty years of marriage in an extraordinary and altruistic way, esteemed alumni of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng May-

nila (PLM), Phil and Gloria Gil, marked their golden wedding anniversary with an act of profound generosity. Having relocated to the United States after studying in PLM, the couple returned to their roots by dedicating their

celebration to a noble cause – the scholarship fund of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila Scholars Foundation Inc. (PLMSFI).

Ms. Gloria Gil is, currently one of the Trustees of PLMSFI and its Vice-President. Her appeal to their friends was simple but deeply meaningful: in lieu of traditional gifts, they requested contributions to support the education of deserving scholars of PLMSFI. This remarkable act of selflessness touched the hearts of their friends and relatives so much that the couple were able to accumulate a substantial amount which they all donated to PLMSFI. Thus, in addition to the 15 scholars that the Gil couple have sponsored, their son Matthew Gil and Gloria’s brother Gerry Browning have also sponsored one scholar each.

In response to this heartwarming gesture, Mr. Terry Galvante, President of PLMSFI, sent a letter expressing PLMSFI’s profound gratitude to the Gil couple and their friends. Mr. Galvante expressed his deep appreciation for their generous donations, emphasizing the profound impact their support will have on the lives of aspiring scholars of PLMSFI. The Gil couple’s dedication to their alma mater, and their friends’ support, were praised as an embodiment of PLMSFI’s values.

The Gil couple celebrated their golden anniversary with a mass at the St. Edward The Confessor Catholic Church, followed by a reception at Laguna Cliffs Marriot Hotel in Dana Point California. Their celebration exemplifies the enduring impact that acts of philanthropy can have on education, and their legacy will continue to inspire generations of students and supporters at PLM.

Straight from the Christell Apilado BSBA Business Economics Magna Cum Laude Joining PLMSFI during my university’s final year proved priceless to me. Their support aided my feasibility studies and personal growth through workshops. The recent professional preparation workshop transformed my mindset for the job hunt, emphasizing the value of interviews to enhance speaking skills. Grateful for this scholarship during financial struggles, I commit to succeeding in my career to give back. A Tale of a Silent Battle H AVE you ever met or heard about someone who has just fought a silent battle? What is silent battle anyway?

Battles are supposed to be loud and noisy, comes with a bang and sounds of gunfire and lots of people get hurt. And killed. Is there such a thing as a silent battle? Ok, I’ll explain it to you from the point of view of someone who has gone through a silent battle.

Silent battles don’t involve guns and shootings. Not even sounds of voices of people fighting can be heard. Silent battles are when you’re at your darkest moment in life and even though they are dark you will come out of it so much stronger than before, that is if you win. In recalling my childhood, I was naturally curious about events and moments happening around me and that curiosity led me to better understand situations and dynamics of family and people from the point of view of a child. Being that, I was carefree, full of energy and could be easily influenced. I felt genuine, innocent, naive and happy about everything that came to me only to wake up one day to realize that we were poor. That realization broke my heart like a dagger piercing through it. I felt dark and bleak, feeling to what seemed to me us living the life of a destitute and amplified more when I see and meet children my age with nice toys, living in nice houses, neat and well-dressed being driven to school by their rich parents. I was both sad and angry but at the same time dreamt that maybe someday I would be like them or maybe not. I was confused. I was fighting a silent battle. I wanted out of this rut and fast.

Looking back, I realized that I was doing something innate and instinctual for my survival. I started to not caring much about our being poor and began to choose only to live in the confines of my we’re ok reality and use those memorable moments as my defense and fine-tuning mechanism to cope with the vicissitudes of family life. Thankfully, this mindset would serve to help me walk to the next level of my growing up as my psychological crutch.

In high school I started to explore my potential in academics. I started to gain confidence, sought out new friends, and even went as far as competing at division and regional levels representing our school, especially in essay writing, declamation, and quiz bee contests. I further improved on my learning routine through reading books, and managing my time to honing my skills in taking notes and more importantly learning how to rest. During my last years of high school, I became a student leader in multiple organizations in our school.

Joining these organizations taught me something: to be a leader you need to be a good and

reliable example for those whom you serve. It was a turning point in my life; I knew that for the first time, I felt that I had done something important: fulfilled a purpose and forgotten my burdens.

Life in school preoccupied me with multiple tasks and school and academic activities that I even forgot to having not considered the status of my family. Then darkness took over my person again. Lacking in money, we transferred from one house to the next because my parents could not pay rentals on time. As a student I was totally immersed in my studies and was nonchalant about the time I spent with my family. Inside me, I wanted to help them by doing a little business or even take a part-time job which in circumspect is easier said than done.

What was I thinking? My mother though saw through my temerity and simply said she would not allow me to do something else except to focus on my studies.

“Treasure your time with your loved ones”, as the saying goes. Personally, I felt lacking in this as I recall the year 2019 when on my way home from school my sister texted me that my grandma passed away. When I got home, my mother who was in Pangasinan taking care of my ailing father, texted me that my father had also died just an hour after my grandmother.

I felt crushed, deeply saddened and overwhelmed by this turn of events. Never did I think, not even once, that such a horrible thing would befall upon my family.

Time heals and it was time to move on.

I was already in college at PLM. I wanted to pass my course without the stress and all.

Concomitantly, I had to deal with continuing challenges and obstacles that have yet to be properly addressed. The course that was available to me was not my preferred one. I wanted to change course but it was not an option that I

should take considering the other concerns related to an impoverished family. My silent battle wakens anew. A battle that I tried to keep to myself; a battle tough enough to the point that I felt I needed a therapist to help me deal with my anxieties only to be held back as my family was practically broke and would not be able to afford one.

Again, time heals and life goes on. Then, the deus ex machina moment came unexpectedly. I completed my studies and graduated Magna Cum Laude. I was happy, joyful, jubilant and feeling celebratory for quite a while. My silent battle was now irrelevant.

Vanquished by me despite the great odds of me losing. It was a battle well fought drawn from my inner strength which I thought I did not have. It reminded me of a quote from the famous English poet, playwright and actor Ben Jonson, “He knows not his own strength that has not met adversity.” What I had just gone through made me realize that with the strength of character and foundational integrity, man can overcome hardships, hurdle obstacles and successfully tackle the myriads of challenges that he may be confronted with at any point in his life. I hope we can all draw lessons from my personal narrative. To be sure we all have our respective silent battles.

I now face the next chapter of my life after school with optimism and hopes of a good quality of life and at the same time thrilled to face new and daunting challenges. This time I will be more resilient and better prepared.

I end by expressing my heartfelt thanks to the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila for providing us students of PLM quality and accessible education. I will never be as strong as I am now without this experience. To my PLMSFI family, thank you for accompanying and guiding me in my journey not only as a scholar but also as family. I express my gratitude for giving me the opportunity to lead, and express myself and for giving me a platform to improve and stand where I am today. To the Board of Trustees, generous benefactors, my Scholar Society family, to my co-scholars, it was a pleasure to have served the best organization that I have ever had. Finally, to our God Almighty, the silent battles you provided molded me into who I am today, and for our family’s blessings. I declare this to your holy name.

She is thankful that Rotary Club of Makati, Salcedo had GenHope Scholarship Project to anchor her plans and reach-out. GenHope means to sow generational hope, aligned with Rotary International’s 2023-2024 theme of Create Hope in the World.

As a former PLMSFI scholar herself who benefited from the good ness of PLMSFI, it inspired Pam to do more by aspiring to increase the number of students that she together with the Rotary Club Makati are currently sponsoring from 10 to 300, a number that she prays to achieve in the coming years, God wiling.

Pam’s advise to PLMSFI beneficiaries: Live a purposeful life. Whatever your calling keep faith, be your best, and stay deep. Be a blessing to others. Generosity breeds generosity.
