Independence Blue Cross Looking back over another exciting and dynamic year, it is remarkable how we’ve grown. Not only are we providing enjoyment to visitors and needed resources and opportunities in the surrounding community, but the wonderful things that Please Touch Museum has to offer both inside and outside the museum walls has had a significant impact on the regional economy. As a major tourist attraction in the Philadelphia region that welcomed nearly 590, 000 visitors in FY2012, the Museum creates over 800 full time jobs, $20 million in household income, and $3.5 million in city and state tax revenue!

Perched on its picturesque location in the heart of Philadelphia’s Centennial District, Please Touch Museum continues to extend its influence, thus becoming a conduit of positive change by connecting with an expansive range of partners. Let us now take you through the events, people and organizations that helped connect Please Touch Museum to the community we serve.

o counter the effects of continued cuts to arts and education funding, Please Touch Museum develops programming to meet the needs of children and families. In addition to providing no cost visits for over 35,000 school children, we provide print and online resources that show teachers how to use the Museum’s experiences to supplement what happens in the classroom. Through our parenting programs, we teach caregivers the skills which help them play more active roles in the development of their children. We continue to expand and fine tune our exhibits and programming so that little ones not only develop strong science, math and other foundational life skills but are also able to improve their imagination and creativity through the arts.

This year, Please Touch Museum unveiled its reimagined The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Medical Center. The transformation of this beloved exhibit enhances the ability of little ones and their families to learn about medical experiences through play, whether they are driving the ambulance with its working lights, sirens and emergency dispatch recordings, operating the state-of-the-art x-ray or MRI machines, or caring for a newborn in the newly equipped nursery. This exhibit also serves as an innovative training ground for CHOP’s Child Life Specialists who work with patients and their families.

n collaboration with our partners, the Museum has expanded its commitment to supporting underserved neighborhoods. For the first time, Please Touch Museum hosted special programming on Target 1st Wednesdays as part of the Museum’s Get Up and Grow™ healthy lifestyles initiative. Throughout the summer months, visitors were able to purchase an array of affordable fresh produce as they entered the museum from a farm stand set up by Teens 4 Good, an urban farming program. There were also cooking demonstrations in front of the Please Taste Cafe presented by Brûlée Catering, using the farm stand’s wholesome ingredients.

Additionally, guests had the opportunity to participate in a variety of outdoor activities such as stepping with Step by Step, line dancing with the Martin Luther King Older Adult Center, yoga with West Philadelphia’s Wake Up Yoga and Zumba with Inspired

by Motion. With these successful additions to the lineup, the Museum realized a 35% increase in Target 1st Wednesday attendance. In addition to longstanding support from PTM partner Target, these activities were supported by United Healthcare.

C

ombining efforts with other organizations and businesses is a central way we at Please Touch are able to strengthen and maximize our efforts. A short time ago, PTM and Rita’s Water Ice joined forces to design and create the Museum’s new interactive Rita’s Water Ice Cart where little ones are now able to use their math, literacy and treat scooping skills. In celebration of this new experience, Please Touch Museum and Rita’s also unveiled the Museum’s exclusive Italian ice flavor, Carousel Cherry.

Additionally, the Museum was able to expand its Financial Literacy programming with the help of PNC Foundation’s Grow Up Great initiative. Key focus areas for the Grow Up Great program include Spending, Sharing and Saving. Taking these ideas, Please Touch Museum’s Community Learning department created a Please Touch Museum “Kid’s Store Play Kit” to teach these concepts in pre-K classrooms.

We now offer a free program based around the kits to low income area schools that cannot afford outside programming.

aving moved to Memorial Hall more than three years ago, PTM continues to flourish. In February 2012, a mother visiting with her son became the 2 millionth guest. Upon arrival, Jack and his mother Cindy were greeted by the Mad Hatter along with museum staff and guests and presented with an exciting package of gifts. It would have taken nearly 11 years for the museum to host 2 million visitors at our smaller home off the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

Though more than 20% of PTM visitors are from outside of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, local residents continue to support the institution that has succeeded in making art and culture accessible for them and their children since 1976. Due to the financial support of these members and families, in March 2012 Please Touch opened a new exhibit, Railway Play. Railway Play is the first new permanent exhibit at PTM since moving to Memorial Hall in 2008. It was also made possible by the support of the 25th Century Foundation, Railway Play’s Presenting Sponsor, whose gift jump started the Choo Choo Challenge giving campaign.

enjoy together. For adults who visit without children, we offer 90-minute Centennial Tours that explore the history and transformation of Memorial Hall. Older visitors also

enjoy PTM’s Toy Collection. From Magna Doodle and Chutes and Ladders to Barbie dolls and Star Wars action figures, the Museum’s Collections feature over 25,000 items. Favorites like our 1908 Woodside Park Dentzel Carousel which generated over $316,000 in revenue this year and the set and props from the Captain Noah and His Magical Ark television series serve as great vehicles for intergenerational memory-sharing and fun.

Also, seasonal favorites such as the Lit Brother’s Enchanted Colonial Village, first displayed at the Center City department store in 1969, allows Please Touch Museum to bring the magic and motion of holiday’s past to today’s visitors. In 2000, the Philadelphia Foundation bestowed its largest award to restore this iconic piece of local history.

roviding exhibits, programs and public spaces that are inclusive and interactive for all visitors is central to the Museum’s mission and a cornerstone of our organization. Notably, PTM’s Autism Access program has enabled many children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and their families to visit the Museum in conditions better suited to their needs. We are thrilled to have hosted three special events for families with special needs children this past year. We also served students with vision impairments or who are deaf or hard of hearing through the Books to Know program in partnership with the Clark School for Hearing and Speech.

In FY2012, the Museum’s accessibility efforts were consolidated into a single comprehensive initiative, Play Without Boundaries. PTM received several grants in support of this program, from SAP America, Inc., the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Widener Memorial Foundation in Aid of Handicapped Children which all seek to support and provide resources for vulnerable populations as well as families of children with special medical, physical, and emotional needs. Going forward, the Museum will continue to expand its offerings to this audience, hosting more access events and working to make PTM exhibits even more accessible to children with disabilities or special needs and their families.

We could give countless examples to illustrate how Please Touch Museum and its partners and constituents have worked together to make a positive impact on our entire community. Now more than ever, it is crucial for museums and other educational institutions to spread the word about their impact and leverage that impact into a positive influence on society as a whole.

In the coming year, we at Please Touch Museum will continue to provide exciting exhibits, creative programming and crucial resources while also maintaining and growing the connections that ultimately lead to discovery, learning, and pure fun for everyone.
