PLEASE TOUCH MUSEUM ANNUAL REPORT OCTOBER 1, 2016 – SEPTEMBER 30, 2017

OUR STORYBOOK YEAR a pivotal chapter Reimagining play to empower 21st-century learners.

FISCAL YEAR ‘17 WAS A TRANSFORMATIVE TIME FOR PLEASE TOUCH MUSEUM AS WE CELEBRATED BOTH A MILESTONE BIRTHDAY AND MAPPED OUT A NEW STRATEGIC PLAN FOR OUR FUTURE. INSPIRED BY AN EMBOLDENED MISSION: CHANGE A CHILD’S LIFE AS THEY DISCOVER THE POWER OF LEARNING THROUGH PLAY, WE ARE BUILDING ON OUR LEGACY OF 40 YEARS OF LEARNING AND FUN. Through the framework set forth in our strategic plan, Please Touch Museum 2020: Reimagining Play to Empower 21st-Century Young Learners, we have reaffirmed our commitment to be a safe place where every child is welcome and is met with relevant opportunities and experiences through our innovative exhibitions, educational programming, and special events. Fiscal Year ’17 has also brought us many delightful lessons: To be creative and willing to try on new hats, as inspired by The Adventures of MR. POTATO HEAD exhibit; to savor the sweetness of new interactions and experiences, as noted by the addition of our permanent pint-sized Bassetts Ice Cream Stand; and to be proud of who you are and where you are going, a nod to the first feature exhibit developed by our own exhibitions team, The Fantastic World of Dan Yaccarino. Please join us as we flip through the pages of our very own storybook year. We look forward to the excitement of the years ahead made possible thanks to your generosity and support. Yours in Play,

PLEASE TOUCH MUSEUM

Please Touch Museum is proud to support local Philadelphia teachers, administrators, and parents in providing interactive learning through play opportunities for all children. As part of this partnership and commitment, the Museum offers free admission to all Philadelphia schools Pre-K through grade 1 students and hosts the City’s annual PHLPreK Move-Up Day to celebrate the completion of Pre-K and readiness for Kindergarten. On June 17th, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney and several city officials gathered at the Museum alongside dozens of Pre-K children and their families to celebrate this year’s second annual event. During PHLPreK Move-Up Day, young attendees and their families enjoyed free admission to the Museum’s various exhibitions and a ride on our historic Dentzel Carousel.

Play Without Boundaries Play Without Boundaries (PWB) is a recurring Museum early-opening program with special sensory-friendly accommodations for children with learning and developmental disabilities, those on the autism spectrum, and their families. PWB enables all children to play and learn in a safe and welcoming setting with fewer crowds, less noise, and more fun!

Parkside Community Advisory Council Please Touch Museum’s Parkside Community Advisory Council represents dedicated local civic and nonprofit leaders, faith leaders, elected officials, and representatives of the Museum’s Parkside community neighbors. The support of this group helps PTM imagine new opportunities and experiences for its visitors.

Looking Back & Giving Back, 40 Year Gala The 40th year was also celebrated with a beautiful Dr. Seuss-themed gala, titled From There to Here, From Here to There at Memorial Hall! Bassetts Ice Cream Stand For more than a century, children and grown-ups have enjoyed a scoop or two (or three) at Bassetts Ice Cream stand located in Philadelphia’s iconic Reading Terminal Market. This year, Please Touch Museum brought the beloved Philly destination to delicious life through its Bassetts Ice Cream Stand exhibition, a kid-sized re-creation of the original. This pint-sized addition to our Roadside Attractions gallery encourages children to learn about the world around them through hands-on play.

Gear Wall The Gear Wall exhibit brought an interactive and engaging STEM-focused addition to our Adventure Camp exhibit. PTM’s innovative Gear Wall exhibit was fabricated largely out of inexpensive scrap materials and installed using exclusively internal resources.

CHARTING FOR AN Impactful Future

CREATING A COMMUNITY of Members & Friends

Our singular mission is to change a child’s life as they discover the power of learning through play. We are united by a promise to be a leader in 21st-century children’s museums, to be a key resource of learning through play, and to expand our reach and impact within the Philadelphia region and beyond.

The Benefits of Membership

PLE ASE TOUCH MUSEUM IS CHARTING AN INNOVATIVE PL AN FOR THE FUTURE THAT WILL CONTINUE TO EXPAND ITS RELE VANCE AND IMPACT ON E ARLY CHILDHOOD LE ARNING AND DE VELOPMENT.

In 2016, the Museum also introduced a new strategic plan and vision to guide its overall institutional direction for the coming years. Centered around a newly emboldened mission and promise, “Please Touch Museum 2020: Reimagining Play to Empower 21st-Century Learners,” we set the course for a future as a leading proponent of, and advocate for, learning through play and its critical role in early childhood development.

MEMBERS ARE THE HE ART OF OUR ORGANIZ ATION . THEIR SUPPORT AND PATRONAGE MAKE CRE ATING AND WELCOMING NEW EXHIBITS POSSIBLE, AND THEIR VALUED FEEDBACK HELPS GUIDE THE DIRECTION OF OUR FUTURE .

Membership at Please Touch Museum provides an opportunity for children and their grownups to learn and play together in an innovative and interactive environment and provides access to unlimited “purposeful play,” which has proven to be a highly effective avenue for learning and retention. Members can return to our beloved permanent exhibits, discovering something new with each visit at an enjoyable and leisurely pace, and members can also explore many different limited-time temporary exhibits and events throughout the year.

As a leading advocate for early childhood learning through play, Please Touch Museum continues to look strategically to the future. In March 2016, PTM received a two-year, $750,000 grant from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage to research and develop a new set of blended digital and hands-on exhibitions and education programs, as well as for the marketing and distribution of strategies designed to expand the Museum’s audience and programs. PTM is committed to reimagining the ways that its play-based experiences empower learning. By connecting exhibits and programming through innovation centered around contemporary skill building and understanding, and bolstering the capacity for excellence and sustainability across all facets of the institution – from staff to the Board of Trustees – the Museum is poised to strengthen and grow its prominence in the community. Crucial to the plan was the addition of the new Chair of the Please Touch Museum Board of Trustees, Kristen Vieira Traynor, and the initiative to expand the board with the addition of six new members.

12

PLEASE TOUCH MUSEUM

FISCAL YEAR ’17 MARKED THE FIRST FULL YEAR PLEASE TOUCH MUSEUM EXPERIENCED NO SHORTTERM OR LONG-TERM DEBT, THE RESULT OF SUCCESSFULLY RAISING APPROXIMATELY $7,856,000 FROM A CAMPAIGN IN FISCAL YEAR ’16.

TOTAL EXPENSES

Please Touch Museum dedicated a total of 77% of our expenses towards educational and cultural programming and exhibition initiatives in FY17, while also providing no- or low-cost admission to approximately 18% of our total 493,000+ Museum visitors. The Museum experienced an 8% increase in earned revenue in FY17, which covered 88% of our operating expenses, up from 80% in FY ’16. Our revenue boost was driven by strong admissions and membership revenue, as well as by significant efforts to improve operational efficiencies throughout the Museum. Those efforts resulted in expense reductions of over $1,500,000 and left our cash and marketable securities positioned at $5,075,000 – a 17% increase over the prior year.
