Representing Our Communities

Hello and Welcome to Princeton!

I am so glad you are here and have chosen to call Princeton “Home”.

Princeton is one of the fastest-growing cities in all of Collin County. Currently close to 30,000 residents live in Princeton and we expect that to double in the next few years. Princeton has grown tremendously already and we are working hard to continue smart, strategic growth. We are continuously working to be a City that allows you to live, work, and play all within the city, allowing you to spend your valuable time with your friends and loved ones versus traveling to other cities. We pride ourselves in maintaining our charm and southern hospitality and keeping our family-friendly culture alive, making Princeton unique. We regularly host various community events that we hope you will be a part of either as a vendor, performer, or just a spectator taking in all the sights and sounds that Princeton offers. We hold many of our events at our beautiful parks which we are continuously expanding and improving to offer more services to our citizens. Aside from our local events and community involvement, Princeton also loves to help cultivate the relationship between our local businesses and the community. We are home to a wide variety of businesses and we are actively looking to expand on those through strong partnerships with our Chamber of Commerce and our Economic Development Corporation. Together, we work to bring the right businesses and opportunities to Princeton to better serve our citizens and families.

On behalf of myself, our City Council, City Manager and our amazing First Responders, we welcome you to our wonderful city. If you see me out and about, please stop and say Hello, I would love to meet you!

Brianna Chacón

FARM TO TABLE WITH THE REEVES FAMILY FARM

The farm is currently run by the Reeves family, headed by Aaron and Stacey Reeves. The family of six includes four dogs, a few barn cats, Buddy the Longhorn, Snickers, and Maggie (their miniature horses), and a slew of happy, free-range egg-laying hens. They pride themselves on providing customers with locally sourced produce that is fresh and healthy.

It’s been a dream for Aaron Reeves to work alongside his family on his farm within walking distance from his home. Growing his food and providing it to his community is a blessing for his family and their loyal customers, who come back year after year to support them. Both Aaron and Stacey believe in educating their children and the younger generation about the importance of eating healthy food and being eco-friendly whenever possible. Their children also help on the farm whenever possible, and they are taught the importance of taking care of the land and the environment.

The Reeves Family Farm experience is even more innovative because they can interact with their customers and even host them for events on the farm throughout the year. Customers can buy organic produce from the farm and have various options with the seasonal fruits and veggies offered at the Farmer’s Market each week. Reeves Family Farm also partners with other farms in the area to supply other locally-grown products to their community. From start to finish, the produce is fresh and of the highest quality available. Customers can be confident that what they are buying has been grown using sustainable methods without harmful pesticides or herbicides.

In Summer, Okra is their largest crop. They also grow different varieties of squash, tomatoes, cantaloupe, peppers, peas, beets, green beans, potatoes, and sweet onions. Produce is sold by the pound, and cus-

tomers can purchase what they like in bulk to take home with them. There are many events and festivals held at the farm each year that allow customers to interact with the farm and enjoy the sights and smells of the growing season at its best, such as their Pumpkin Delivery and Decoration service in time for fall.

Reeves Family Farm is an excellent resource for people in the Princeton area looking for a Farm to Table option that is local, organic, and sustainable. They de-

liver their produce to many locals in the greater Princeton area and are the premier source of local organic produce. They provide the community with fresh produce so that they can feel good about feeding their families while supporting local farmers at the same time. In addition to the local produce they have available, they also sell homemade lunches and baked goods from their in-house kitchen, local honey, handmade soaps, and other products made by different vendors in the community.

THE FARM TO TABLE MOVEMENT IS CHANGING THE WAY WE EAT

The Farm to Table Movement is quickly becoming one of the most popular dietary trends in the United States. What is Farm to Table, and why are people so interested in it?

Advanced Biotech defines the Farm to Table movement as a “national initiative focused on expanding access to fresh, local food.” Since its resurgence in 2011, Farm to Table has spread throughout the United States and other parts of the world. Proponents of the movement believe that one of the best ways to improve the nutritional quality of your diet is to eat food produced locally and raised without using chemicals or pesticides. One of the movement’s primary goals is to promote environmental sustainability by encouraging people to buy locally grown produce and meats whenever possible. Article continued on next page.

20 PRINCETON LOWRY CROSSING 2023 COMMUNITY RESOURCE & RELOCATION GUIDE PRINCETON LOWRY CROSSING - 2023 Community Resource & Relocation Guide PG. 9

In addition to promoting environmental sustainability, the Farm to Table movement also aims to support small farms and artisanal businesses throughout America. Small farms are essential in our local communities by providing high-quality produce and meats using sustainable methods. By supporting small farmers and artisanal businesses, we can ensure that we will continue to have access to fresh fruits and vegetables in the years ahead. According to the Pew Research Center, most Americans now recognize the importance of eating locally sourced food and supporting small farmers and artisanal businesses. Over the past few years, the number of people interested in buying locally produced food has grown significantly. This growing interest has led to more local farmers opening markets to sell

their products to community members. Local farmers are also starting farmer’s markets to sell their products directly to consumers.

As you can see, the Farm to Table movement significantly impacts our local community. It is changing how we eat and helping us support small farms and artisanal businesses that are doing important work in our community. As a community, we should be proud of what we have accomplished. But there is still a lot of work to be done. We must continue to find ways to support the Farm to Table movement so that we can reap the benefits for years to come.

Another benefit of the Farm to Table movement is that it can help promote food security in our communities. As

the global population continues to grow, more and more people around the globe are going into poverty due to a lack of access to adequate food supplies. The Food Research and Action Center states that in the United States alone, about 40 million people live in poverty because they lack the resources to obtain nutritious meals. In many cases, low-income families turn to fast food restaurants when they go hungry because they are more convenient and affordable than full-service restaurants, supported by several studies on Individual, Household, and Environmental Factors Affecting Food Choices and Access. While this is undoubtedly an improvement over going without food altogether, it is not a sustainable solution to hunger because it does not provide families with long-term nutritional benefits.

PRINCETON MAKING THE GRADE

District performs well academically, provides programs to get students involved in meaningful activities

Although Princeton ISD continues to experience explosive growth, the district maintains a focus on its mission to inspire and enable each

student to achieve their full potential, which is evident with the recent A rating from the state of Texas for the education the schools provide.

With 11 new campuses expected over the next 10 years, PISD will be equipped to handle the projected enrollment of 16,648 students by 2031.

The district has continued its trend of opening a new school every year, however, this pace had to be accelerated to handle the growth.

“The PISD Board of Trustees recently voted to update the timeline for future campuses,” said Princeton ISD Superintendent Donald McIntyre. “Our student population is expected to double over the next 10 years.”

According to Mr. McIntyre, demographers projected Princeton ISD to have 8,641 students by October of Fall 2023.

“For the 2022-23 school year, enrollments are nearing 600 students in each grade level,” he said. “We are on pace with our demographer’s numbers. We are right about where we expected.”

With the board’s approval to adjust the timeline for future schools, four construction projects are currently underway in the Princeton school district, including Buddy and Marilyn Mattei Middle School, which will open in 2023 in the southern area of the district on County Road 728 near FM 546 and County Road 392.

“When Mattei Middle School opens in 2023, this will help the district take a step toward balancing the growth between our middle school campuses,” Mr. McIntyre said. Two campuses and an expansion are planned for the following year with groundbreaking expected in the spring of 2023. The design and development phase

of these projects are already underway.

Marcella Green Elementary will open in 2024 in the White Wing Trails development near Monte Carlo and Longneck Road as the district’s seventh elementary school. In addition, Janice James Elementary School will also open its doors in 2024 and will be adjacent to Mattei Middle School.

To help provide relief at the high school level, a new academic wing will be added to Lovelady High School to allow for the campus to transition to a 9th- and 10th-grade center, leaving only 11th- and 12thgraders at PHS.

These projects are all part of the 2018 bond election, but since there are no signs this growth pattern will slow down, future plans are necessary.

“We are in the process of gathering our next long-range planning committee with meetings set to begin in midNovember 2022 to continue further plans for the future,” Mr. McIntyre said.

These school facility projects are all necessary to help PISD maintain quality education for its students.

“Our school board is extremely goal-centered,” McIntyre said. “We

COLLEGE JUMP START

For more than six years, Princeton ISD has been working with Collin College to assist students in obtaining a post-secondary education.

Through the partnership with Collin College, Princeton graduates can leave high school with an associate’s degree.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to help our students get a jump start on their college education,” Mr. McIntyre said.

The dual credit classes Princeton students take are fully funded by PISD, up to an associate’s degree.

“PHS graduates have the ability to enter college nearly two years ahead, which saves them thousands of dollars,” Mr. McIntyre said. “We are extremely proud of the College Jump Start program and what it offers our students.”

CATE PROGRAM

Princeton ISD’s renowned CATE program boasts nearly 20 career options where students can receive valuable hands-on training and certifications that lead to further education or apprenticeships or straight to the job market.

“Our CATE program offers courses designed to enhance student opportunities for post-secondary education or training in highdemand, high-growth and highwage careers,” CATE Director Brett Hackman said.

Courses include animal science; automotive technology; audio/video production; computer science;

construction trades; cosmetology; culinary arts; electrical technician; engineering; heating, ventilation and air conditioning; nursing; commercial photography; robotics; video game design and welding.

Some opportunities for CATE students include participation in competitions, internships, presentations by industry leaders and on-site training.

More than 45,000 square feet of educational space is dedicated to the enhancement of the CATE program.

“Students have access to state-ofthe-art facilities and equipment to simulate a professional workplace,” Mr. Hackman said. “Administrators with districts from across the state have toured PISD’s CATE Center to model their own programs based on Princeton’s model.”

JOIN A THRIVING BUSINESS MECCA

Princeton prides itself on being home to a broad spectrum of businesses that boast longevity, high revenues, and a loyal customer base. To make Princeton the place to expand your business, the PEDC has instituted incentives to attract burgeoning businesses to make Princeton their home. There are also incentives to develop existing businesses to stimulate the city’s internal ecosystem while encouraging sustainable economic growth.

Theincentives currently active are:

Chapter 380 of the Texas Local Government Code- This authorizes Princeton to offer a range of incentives for economic development, including the ability to rebate some of the city’s portion of the 1.0% sales. Chapter 380 also allows for the use of tax collected from business entities located in the jurisdiction. Specifically, the code grants municipalities the power to offer incentives designed to promote economic development, such as commercial and retail projects. Most importantly, it provides loans and grants of city funds or services at little or no cost to promote state and local economic development and stimulate business and commercial activity.

Tax Abatement-Qualifying businesses that are considering locating in Princeton have the opportunity to apply for a property tax abatement on new value created as a result of the project. Abatement terms are up to 10 years, and the amount ranges up to 100% of real and personal property annually.

Tax Increment Reinvestment Zones (TIRZ)- Princeton has historically utilized Increment Reinvestment Zones (TIRZ) as a powerful tool to develop and redevelop qualified projects that align with the city’s goals and objectives. TIRZ help facilitate development and redevelopment projects, increasing the commercial property’s value.

Direct Incentive- Princeton utilizes the direct incentive to provide cash grants to qualifying projects and companies. Once a company is deemed eligible, the direct incentives are based on a number of factors, including total job creation and wages, capital investment, the financial strength of the applicant, the applicant’s business history, and an analysis of the relevant business sector.

Façade Improvement Matching Incentive Grant Program-

The Façade Improvement Matching Incentive Grant Program provides a dollar-for-dollar match in the form of reimbursement up to a maximum of ten thousand dollars ($10,000) for eligible improvements to facades in the City of Princeton. Participants are eligible for up to one (1) incentive per twelve (12) months from completing the previous project under this program. Applicants who meet the ten thousand dollars ($10,000) match threshold are eligible for a waiver of building permit fees.

New Restaurant Incentive Grant Program- This incentive provides funding for authorized improvements such as installing a Grease Interceptor, Water and Wastewater Lines, Fire Sprinklers, and Alarm.
