LETTER FROM OUR LEADERSHIP As we end the 2020-2021 season, we are filled with gratitude and excitement!

Gratitude… for our incredible conductors, instructors, coaches, and artistic staff who made this year possible - their commitment to continue teaching no matter what, and their dedication to young people are extraordinary. for our master class instructors, some of the most talented musicians from across the globe, who took the time to work online with our students. for the audio and video editing team who assembled hundreds of homemade recordings into beautiful music for our virtual performances, including four livestreamed concerts. for the flexibility and persistence of MYS students, who joined in despite the online rehearsal world of Zoom, click tracks, and virtual concerts, and continued to play and get better. We are inspired. for our group managers, who volunteered their time each week to make sure Zoom rehearsals ran smoothly, sending hundreds of students and their coaches into break-out rooms for studio classes. for MYS families and audiences whose support of our musicians and participation at concerts and events is so important and encouraging in every way! for the MYS board, who are so wise, fun, and committed to making our program the most excellent and accessible it can be. to everyone who contributes financially - your generosity changes lives and is shaping the future of not only of music, but our communities, as MYS students take the strengths and skills they gain from music-making into their future.

COMPOSERS AMIR AVSKER was born in Israel in 2006. Amir’s passion

for music began when he was eight years old. His mother knew how to play Für Elise, and that inspired him. Aside from piano, he also studies violin and voice. Soon after he started playing piano, Amir began improvising short pieces and thinking of melodies in his head. This was how he started composing; he started formally studying composition when he was 11. Amir studies composition with Stephen Lewis, piano with Elena Istratova, violin with Kevin Lefohn, and voice with Matthew Hayward. In 2018, Amir won the Oregon Music Education Association Student Composition Competition with a violin sonata, and in 2019 he was interviewed on the All Classical Portland radio station.Amir’s composition style is that of the Classical era, a style that is rarely composed today. He has written more than 40 compositions, and he is now working on his first opera. Amir’s other interests include aviation, astronomy, and Taekwondo

GIANCARLO CASTRO D’ADDONA is an awarded

composer, conductor and trumpet player and has been recognized as an exceptional artists from “El Sistema” in Venezuela. His compositions have been performed in halls such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Disney Concert Hall in L.A, Radio France Theater in Paris, the Royal Albert Hall in London, Berlin Konzerthaus in Berlin, Vienna Concertgebouw in Vienna among others. His works have appeared on the EMI Classics, Genuin, and Euroarts labels. As a conductor, he has led many orchestras and chamber music groups, including the Simón Bolívar Orchestra in Venezuela, the Paris Symphonic Orchestra, and Orchestre de Valenciennes. Giancarlo has conducted MYS’ Sinfonietta Orchestra since September 2019.

JACKSON GRACE is 17 years old and a Junior at Franklin

Highschool. He is a straight A student currently in 4 AP classes and his favorite subjects in school are mainly math, physics nd history. He plays piano in the Franklin Jazz band and outside of school he plays piano in the MYS jazz ensemble and have participated in the Young Composer’s Project for 5 years. In his free time, he likes to design roller coasters in a roller coaster simulator called NoLimits 2 and has participated in a few NoLimits 2 competitions.

FRAZAR P. HENRY is a critically acclaimed and award winning ninth grade

composer/pianist from Bonita Springs, FL. who won 1st Prize in the Miami Music Teachers Foundation Composition Contest, the Frost International Young Artists Piano Concerto Competition, and the Frost International Young Artists Solo Piano Competition! In addition to winning the ASCAP Foundation 2018 Morton Gould Young Composer Award for his orchestral overture In Exordium, he earned 2nd Place in the 2020-2021 Community Music School of Webster University Young Composer Competition, won 1st Prize for Piano in the 2019 Music Foundation of Greater Naples Scholarship Competition and has been named State Winner (Florida) in the MTNA Composition Competition. This year, 9

COMPOSERS Henry was also named Division Winner (Southern) in the MTNA Composition Competition. Henry has received awards from Tribeca New Music 2020 National Young Composer Competition, HeartOut Piano Competition, Tampa Bay Symphony 4th annual Call for Scores Composition Competition, and the 2019 Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York’s Emerging Composers Competition, as well as multiple First Place finishes in the FGCU/Steinway Piano Society Young Artist Piano Competition.

JOHANN MOHNEN is an 18-year-old senior at Westview

High School in Portland, Oregon. Music has always been his interest. Even before preschool, he was eager to learn piano and drums. He has been studying piano for over 10 years and has been composing since middle school. He is also self-taught in guitar, played trombone in concert band for four years, and enjoys producing and recording music on his computer. He has explored a wide variety of musical genres but gravitates towards soundtracks. Johann is the eldest of two brothers and has lived in Portland all his life. When he is not working on music, he enjoys working as a lifeguard, swim instructor, and camp counselor. He has also enjoyed playing baseball for his high school and volunteers for homeless programs around Portland, serving at Night Strike, the Blanchet House, and is an active youth leader in his church.

KOHARU SAKIYAMA is a junior at West Linn High School. She has been

composing since age five and currently studies with Michael Johanson. She was the winner of the 2018 OMEA State Composers Contest, received honorable mention in the 2018 NAfME Composers Competition, honorable mention in the 2020 OMEA State Composers Contest, was the Co-Champion for the 2021 OMEA State Composers Contest, and runner-up in the 2021 Hayes School of Music National Composition Contest. Koharu is a part of FearNoMusic’s Young Composers Project. In addition, Koharu has been playing the violin for twelve years and currently studies with Carol Sindell. She has been a member of the Portland Youth Philharmonic for seven years. Koharu has played the koto, a traditional Japanese instrument, for four years and is a member of the Oregon Koto Kai. She also plays alto saxophone in her high school symphonic band. Outside of music, Koharu ski races for her high school varsity team.

KARA TAYLOR is a junior at Valley Catholic High School,

where she directs and sings in a choir she assembled and plays flute in the band. Outside of school, Kara sings soprano in the Pacific Youth Choir and plays flute in the Metropolitan Youth Symphony. Kara has been composing with the Young Composers Project for three years and has written several pieces for small ensemble. Kara wrote her first orchestration for a silent film soundtrack which was played by MYS at the International Youth Silent Film Concert in early 2020. Currently, Kara is working with the Oregon Chorale to sing and record a choral piece she composed during the pandemic.

PROGRAM NOTES GIANCARLO CASTRO D’ADONNA PORTLAND BEAUTY (2020) It was a mild day with fresh, pure air. I began to enter the forest and I could hear the sounds of various birds, streams, and the trees creating a calm atmosphere. Little by little I went into the forest and the sky began to cloud, the first drops began to fall and the temperature was dropping, just as I reached the lake the raindrops began to turn into snowflakes and I could see this process, so wonderful so unique and majestic. All these elements combined managed to sharpen all my senses and I got the inspiration to write this composition.

THEME AND VARIATIONS (2021) For composers, writing variations on a theme is an opportunity show off one’s compositional technique. For this project with MYS, four composers Kara Taylor, Haladar Wright, Jackson Grace and Johann Mohnen have written variations on “Peasant Song” by Edvard Grieg. By taking a simple melody and creating changes or embellishments in the harmony, rhythm, melody and orchestration the composers create moods and characters that didn’t exist in the original theme. The Peasant Song has been turned into a tango, a depiction of fire and wind, a jazz tune, and a rollicking circus-like romp. These young composers treat the audience to flights of imagination that that will have everyone saying “wow.” -Jeff Payne

FRAZAR P. HENRY EPIPHANY (2021) My piece, “Epiphany”, is based on a theme I had been experimenting with on the piano last year. Because Epiphany was to be performed virtually—due to Covid-19—I was restricted from taking advantage of some compositional techniques, such as tempo and time signature changes which are hard to coordinate and record for a virtual performance but also give music so much of its life and dynamism. I remember there was a point in the middle of composing the piece where I hit a roadblock and had no idea how to continue. I, was, in a word, lost.

One night, while at work at this composition, I had a flash of inspiration—an epiphany, if you will. I decided to rewrite the entire piece, using the same ideas and structure, but with an altered approach. That experience comprised my eponymous Epiphany.

However, epiphanies are subjective experiences. I don’t know if the listener will be able to detect my own epiphany in this piece, but I hope it opens the listener to receiving his or her own epiphanous moment.

AMIR AVSKER DIVERTIMENTO NO. 2. (2021) The first movement of Amir Avsker’s second divertimento is written in a classical sonata form. The exposition starts in G Major with a light and simple theme. After the short primary key area, the transition section is played only by the violins and violas.

The beginning of the secondary key area is marked by the cellos and basses, which mostly double the violas but add a stronger bass line. The closing section begins with another light theme but ends with a short and powerful section.

The development section begins with a version of the main theme in d minor, but quickly modulates through several keys until it arrives in Ab Major, when the theme from the closing section of the exposition repeats. The final area of the development section begins in f minor and proceeds in an ascending fifths sequence until finally returning to the tonic key of G Major.

The recapitulation echoes the exposition, but instead of modulation to the dominant, it remains in G Major.

SENIOR BIOS MADELINE ALTMAN is a senior at Rex Putnam High School. She will be

graduating this spring as an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate and class Valedictorian. Madeline began playing cello in the sixth grade and has participated in MYS for four years, beginning in Sinfonietta Orchestra and working her way up to Symphony Orchestra. Throughout high school, she has enjoyed sitting as principal cellist in her high school’s chamber orchestra, playing with Corey Averill’s cello ensemble and participating in MYS’s chamber music program. When she is not busy practicing or rushing to rehearsal, Madeline enjoys reading, traveling, and trying new coffee shops in Portland. This fall, Madeline will be attending St. Olaf College to study Political Science with a concentration in International Relations. She plans to continue her cello studies through St. Olaf’s orchestral and chamber music programs.

LEVI BRITTON is a senior at Tualatin High School. He has been playing

percussion for 11 years and has studied in the past with Brett EE Paschal. He has been with MYS since the fifth grade, starting with the Sousa Band and Interlude Orchestra for his first year. He progressed through various ensembles and finally landed in Symphony Orchestra midway through his 8th grade year. He was proud to have suggested the name MYSticks and loves that ensemble. In his free time he hikes, hangs out with friends, and reads poetry. Levi will be attending the U of O in the fall, majoring in musical performance for percussion. Levi has had so many wonderful experiences with MYS, and is eternally grateful for all the program has given him.

KAITLYN BROWN is a senior at Tualatin High School and has been playing

percussion for 8 years. She currently studies percussion with Brett Paschal and has been part of MYS for 7 years. In her free time, Kaitlyn enjoys sword-fighting, playing Dungeons and Dragons, reading books, and spending time with her friends. Kaitlyn is going to the University of Oregon to study Mathematics with an educator track. One highlight during her time with MYS was when they went to Italy and got to be on tour. Kaitlyn has really enjoyed playing at MYS and is sad she has to leave this wonderful community.

DERRICK CHA is a senior at Valley Catholic High School. He has been

playing cello for 8 years and currently studies with Hyun-jin Kim. He has been a member of MYS for 3 years. In his free time, he enjoys playing baseball, basketball, and football.

Derrick will be attending UC San Diego in the Fall and plans to study biology. Derrick is grateful for all the great memories created at MYS which he will cherish going into the future.

SENIOR BIOS KEVIN CHEN is a senior at Lincoln High School. He has

been a part of Symphony Orchestra for 3 years. Kevin will be attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign studying Chemical Engineering.

TYLER COLLINS is a graduating senior at Trout Lake

High School. He has played the oboe in various orchestras for his four years with MYS. Music has been a big part of his life and he has also studied piano for the past 12 years. He would like to thank MYS for giving him the opportunity to play in multiple ensembles and venues. He would also like to thank MYS for doing such a good job with the virtual concerts and rehearsals this year. Tyler will be attending Purdue University to study aerospace engineering..

RYLAN FERRON-JONES is a senior at Lincoln High School and has played

violin for thirteen years studying with Elizabeth Doty. He has played with MYS’s Symphony Orchestra for four years in addition to participating in MYSfits, the 2019 Italy and Austria tour, and several chamber music groups with MYS. In the fall, he will study engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. Rylan is glad to have been part of the MYS community and extends his gratitude to Dr. Gómez and all the amazing staff who keep MYS running!

KYLIE FARMER is a senior at Grant High School. She has been playing the

Flute for 8 years and currently studies with Karen Gifford.

She has been part of MYS for 6 years and in her free time, she enjoys painting , spending time with friends, and doing set designing for the Grant theater department. Kylie will be attending The University of Oregon in the fall, and plans to music education. Kylie is extremely grateful for the amazing experiences and memories she has made over the last 6 years with MYS.

STERLING FULKS is a senior at Stayton High School.

He has been playing the double bass for 6 years and currently studies with Jason Schooler. He has been in 7 groups with MYS over the last 8 years, and started with playing violin in Overture strings. He has been a member of the Symphony Orchestra and MYSfits for his senior year. He also plays bass with the Stayton High School Jazz Band and plays oboe with Stayton High School Symphonic Band. In his free time, he participates in cross country and track. He also just earned the rank of Eagle with Scouts. He has enjoyed all of the experiences and friendships he has had with MYS! 13

SENIOR BIOS KELSON GIPP is a senior at Ida B. Wells High School and has been pursuing

his interest in French Horn for seven years since first choosing the instrument under the guidance of Jeannie Berg, Robert Gray’s middle school band legend. Along with his horn tutors Ashley Wilson, Rebecca Olason and Leander Star, Kelson thanks Dr. Gomez for the incredible opportunities he’s enjoyed during his five years at MYS, especially the MYS ’19 Italy-Austria tour. This fall Kelson will attend Willamette University, pursuing a master’s degree in Data Science. He will continue his music career as well, attending with a performance scholarship and continuing to study horn with professor Mike Hettwer.

WILLIAM GRAHAM is a senior at Skyview High School. He has been

playing bass for 8 years and currently studies with Will Amen. William has been involved in MYS ensembles for 6 years, including 4 years in Symphony Orchestra. Some of his hobbies include hiking, making electronic music, and playing ping pong. In the fall, he will enroll at Occidental College, planning to study Geology. William is thankful for all of the amazing musicians he has had the opportunity to work with as well as all of the friends he has made through MYS.

WILLIAM HARDING

is a senior at Rex Putnam High School. He has been playing viola for 6 years and currently studies privately with Brian Quincy. Will has been a part of MYS for 2 1/2 years, Symphony Orchestra for 1 year. In his free time Will enjoys Adventure, golf, hiking and hanging out with friends and family. He will be studying music performance and business at UO, GO Ducks! Will has enjoyed his time playing with MYS and the personal growth with his instrument & music that he has gained through his time in MYS. ELIANA HARRIS is being homeschooled for her senior

year of high school. She has been playing the cello for nine years and currently studies with Myra Christensen. She has been in MYS for six years and has been in Symphony Orchestra for three of those years. In her free time she likes to read, write, and practice martial arts. Eliana will be attending George Fox University in the fall where she will be studying molecular biology. She loved her time here at MYS and is very grateful towards Dr. Gomez and the rest of the MYS staff.

MAYA JOINER is a senior at St. Mary’s Academy. She has

been playing the clarinet for seven years and has been part of both orchestra and band (sinfonietta orchestra, symphonic band, and concert orchestra) at MYS for three years. Before joining MYS, Maya lived in Japan and played clarinet for her school’s orchestra as well as the Kanto Plains Honor

SENIOR BIOS Band. In addition, she also has been playing the piano for twelve years, and enjoys playing piano duets in her current school’s piano ensemble class and competing at the MTNA senior piano duet competition. Outside of MYS, Maya also studies sound waves for the Science Olympiad, an afterschool activity at her school where students attend science competitions. Maya is planning to continue studying wave physics at UC San Diego, and also plans to continue both clarinet and piano in college and beyond.

BILL KILLPACK is a senior at Aloha High School. He

has been playing trombone for 7 years and currently studies with Dave Bones. This was his third year playing with MYS, and his first with the Symphony Orchestra. He enjoys playing video games, reading fantasy novels, and spending time with friends. Bill will be serving a 2 year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints starting in the fall, before attending Brigham Young University to study Civil Engineering. He is incredibly grateful for Dr. Gomez and everyone else that helps run MYS, as well as all the amazing musicians that he has gotten to play with..

COLE MERRILL is a senior at Jesuit High School. He

has been playing the violin for 14 years and studies with Sarah O’Mara. He has played in MYS for 6 years, and in that time, has been part of the Symphony Orchestra for 4 years and part of MYSfits for 3 years. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with friends and family, exercising, and skiing.

Cole will be attending Gonzaga University in the fall, studying both engineering and music. Cole has grown substantially as a musician over his years in MYS, and he greatly appreciates the enjoyment, experience and growth that Dr. Gomez and the people at MYS have given him!

AMANDA MOORE a senior at Southridge High School.

She has been playing the trumpet for 6 years, and has played with the MYS Jazz Ensemble for 4 of those years. In addition to that, she’s also participated in local honor bands, the All-State Symphonic Band, and almost everything her school’s band program had to offer (jazz band, pit orchestra, marching band, etc.). In her free time, Amanda also enjoys drawing and playing video games, either by herself or with friends. While currently undecided on where she’ll go after graduating, she plans on eventually studying music performance and visual arts. Amanda appreciates the opportunities she’s been given while being a part of the MYS program, and considers it a very memorable part of her journey.

SENIOR BIOS ANDREW PELTO is a senior at Westview High School

and has been playing the trumpet for 8 years. He also plays piano, guitar, and sings in choir. This is Andrew’s second year in MYS, the first being with Concert Orchestra and now Symphony Orchestra. He is attending the University of Oregon in the fall to major in music education and trumpet performance.

EVAN PETTICORD is a senior at Lake Oswego High

School. In the Lake Oswego School District, he is accredited to 7 years of orchestra and choir including most recently helping teach and conduct orchestra classes at the middle school. He has been studying violin for 13 years and currently studies with Kevin Lefohn. He has been a part of MYS for 4 years and attended the Italy/Austria tour. Evan will be attending the University of Utah Honors College and plans on studying Business Administration and Violin Performance. He is very appreciative of all the memorable experiences he’s had with Dr. Gómez and how they have bettered him for the future.

ELIZABETH POWERS will be graduating from Mountain View High School in Vancouver, Washington. She has played the flute for 8 years and studies with Savannah Gentry. She also loves playing the piano, playing tennis, and hanging out with her friends and cousins. She will be attending Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah in the Fall and plans on being involved in the music program there. She is thinking about majoring in neuroscience. This was her first year in MYS and she’s glad she got to be a part of it with the Flute Ensemble and Concert Orchestra!

CHARLOTTA SCHREUDER is a senior at La Salle College Preparatory.

She began playing the violin and switched to viola her freshman year in highschool. She has studied with Elizabeth Peyton and is currently studying under Shauna Keys.

Charlotta has been a part of MYS since fifth grade and is currently in Vivaldi. In addition to viola, she is an avid runner and participates in varsity cross country and track, as well as distance runs during the off season. She also enjoys being in the woods and spending time with her family dogs. She will be heading to Oregon State University in the fall to study biology and participate in music opportunities. Charlotta is grateful for the classical music foundation MYS has provided and she looks forward to building on it in college and beyond..

SENIOR BIOS SEBA STENFERT KROESE is a senior at Lakeridge High School. He started playing the violin in fourth grade and has been a part of school orchestra ever since. Seba joined MYS in 2019 and has thoroughly enjoyed it for the past two years. In his free time, Seba plays soccer and tennis, skis, cliff jumps, and goes on camping/backpacking adventures. He will be attending Colorado School of Mines and plans to major in quantitative biosciences and engineering. Seba would like to thank family, friends, Scout leaders, and conductors/musicians who were pivotal to the continuation of his passions.

MICHAEL YAN is a senior at Sunset High School. He has been playing the

violin in MYS for 8 years, and Symphony Orchestra for 3 years. In his free time, he loves to create digital music, play tennis, and hang out with friends and family. Michael has thoroughly enjoyed all the experiences, memories, and relationships he’s gained during his time in MYS. He will continue to cherish them as he goes off to college at the University of Illinois this fall, where he plans to study Computer Engineering.

HYRUM YEATES is a senior at Cleveland High School. He has been playing

the violin for 8 years studying with Anthony Dyer. Hyrum has been part of MYS for 2 years in Vivaldi Strings, serving as co-concertmaster during the 2020-2021 season. Prior to joining MYS, Hyrum played with the Community Music Center orchestras for 4 years, 3 years of which he served as concertmaster. In addition to playing the violin, Hyrum studies the piano and the organ. He has been playing the piano for 12 years and currently studies with David Top, and he has been playing the organ for 5 years. In his free time, Hyrum enjoys composing music, reading high fantasy and classic literature, learning new languages, running, cycling, and playing card and board games.

Hyrum will be attending Brigham Young University in the fall. He has been accepted into their School of Music to study music composition and plans to concurrently study pre-med. Hyrum is grateful to Paloma Griffin Hébert for being a mentor and to all of the many coaches in Vivaldi Strings.
