LETTER FROM OUR LEADERSHIP Happy Spring! Thank you for joining us for our third virtual concert of the season.

We want to thank our conductors, fantastic studio class coaches, and students for their hard work this quarter. After all that the past year entailed, it is fantastic to see that music, creativity, and community cannot be stopped!

Tonight, you will hear from each MYS ensemble as students perform a variety of repertoire, old and new. In addition, we are thrilled that MYS musicians will premiere the music of four composers from the Youth Orchestra Commissioning Initiative (YOCI). This wonderful initiative, spearheaded by Portland Youth Philharmonic, in collaboration with MYS and the New Jersey Youth Symphony, promotes commissions by women and composers of color that can be rehearsed and performed remotely. It has been fantastic to work with composers Seare Farhat, Katie Palka, Bernardo Quesda, and Regina Carter, who rejoins us after performing with Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble last March. It is so impactful for our students to learn and perform original music from such amazing artists. We hope you are impacted as well!

We extend a warm invitation to join us on April 9th at 7pm for our CRESCENDO Gala, which is virtual again this year. We are excited to share the story of our students, celebrate our partners, hear from a range of guest artists, and to give a special tribute to one of MYS’ ‘musical heroes’. The evening also features a wonderful silent auction with dozens of packages including wine tasting, hot air balloon ride and a stay at the Oregon Coast. Also, please join us on April 25th at 7pm for a virtual performance of Kenji Bunch’s Groovebox Fantasy by MYS Symphony Orchestra and Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra. Zoom has enabled the two ensembles to rehearse, hold student panel conversations, talk with Kenji, and record, all remotely. The performance will be broadcast from our YouTube channel.

Regina Carter is a two-time Grammy nominee, as well as a recipient of the MacArthur “genius” award and a Doris Duke Artist Award, Regina has been widely hailed for her mastery of her instrument and her drive to expand its possibilities. Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble had the privilege of performing with her last March at Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. “Elysian Grace is titled for my little cousin,Elysian Grace who carries my late mother’s name,Grace.

Writing this piece was both exciting and challenging. The most difficult part was sticking to an idea; I would start the piece and after composing a good chunk, change my mind and toss it out.

The musical moods in the piece represent the personalities of two year old Elysian one might meet on any given day- sassy, inquisitive, persistent and adorable..”

SPEM IN ALIUM was written for the Metropolitan Youth Symphony in Portland, OR during the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the countless things sacrificed this year was music making and performance, especially at a large scale like in the orchestra. This piece was written not only to find beauty in the process of remote music making, but to embrace its quirks and challenges. The text, Spem in Alium harkens the Thomas Tallis motet of the same name written in 1570 for eight choirs, each of five voices, all in densely heterophonic and imitative counterpoint. The text, Spem in Alium (or Trust in Any Other) aptly fits the setting, where each voice, though independently and sometimes incongruently vocalizing, finds itself in a wash of texture and harmony. Similarly, my setting here for string orchestra in three groups [quintets at minimum] is a wash of sound that sometimes focuses on one group, and at other times floods the ears with massive sonorities.

During this pandemic, we have been asked to trust in our fellow citizens and listen to each other’s needs in an unprecedented way. Not only is this piece an exercise for the musicians to listen locally in a globally chaotic contrapuntal environment, but also for the listener to draw their attention to the many little sounds of individuals as well as the bustling world of sound created from their heterophony. I hope that together we can find peace in the chaos and know that, even though it seems as if we are as distant as possible now in our own separate pods, that we are still members of a community of humans built around trust and with the welfare of all in mind.

During the pandemic, I’ve been living in the Adirondack Mountains in northern NY, virtually connected over the internet, and 3,000 miles of physical distance, to my college. While there, I’ve spent time watching the geese—returning in the spring, having goslings, and departing as ice forms over the Oswegatchie River. flock is inspired by my geese observations. In her book, Emergent Strategy, adrienne maree brown writes, “There is an art to flocking: staying separate enough not to crowd each other, aligned enough to maintain a shared direction, and cohesive enough to always move towards each other.” Likewise, we humans feel this call to gather together. We long to feel held in community with one another, despite the necessary physical distancing. We yearn for connection.

As musicians, despite being physically separated, we feel that same urge, longing, to come together to create something larger than our individual selves. flock is my attempt to acknowledge and honor this need.

My piece is a story about the continuity of bloodline. It’s a tribute to the memory that I have inherited from an 18th century Frenchman who, after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, arrived in the American continent and had a daughter with a native Guatemalan. This man and his daughter migrated to Costa Rica after losing his wife. In this Central-American country, the daughter met a man from Catalunya (northeastern Spain), who was fleeing the horrors of the Spanish Civil War. From this union came Isabel, my father’s mother, and it is to them that I dedicate this piece of music, which will reach the eyes and fingers of musicians who might not understand my native tongue, but they speak my language: music. ‘We are light from the same spiral’
