elcome to Playhouse Square! All of us at KeyBank are thrilled to see you here enjoying the best live theater experience that Cleveland has to offer. As one of the most recognized theater operations in the country, Playhouse Square shares KeyBank’s mission of helping Cleveland thrive and has proved over time to be a pillar of our great community. We are proud to support Playhouse Square and help bring award winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series. For decades, some of KeyBank’s most important work has taken place through philanthropy, volunteerism, and outreach. This is why, in addition to our Broadway Series partnership, we are proud to support Playhouse Square’s not-for-profit mission and educational programming. We are committed to opening more doors to new opportunities in the communities we serve. Since 2017, KeyBank has made community investments totaling more than $1 billion in Northeast Ohio which supports low to moderate income individuals and neighborhoods through lending for affordable housing, small businesses, mortgage and transformative philanthropy. Our investments will continue to focus on economic access and equity for underserved communities and populations. We believe building a better world starts at home and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed. Thank you for joining us and for supporting Playhouse Square. We hope you enjoy this KeyBank Broadway Series show!

PROGRAM NOTE

David Greene

S

et during the Great Depression in 1934 at a boarding house in Duluth, Minnesota, Girl From the North Country is a non-traditional musical that features 22 songs by music legend and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Bob Dylan. Unlike other shows you may have seen that use the historical catalogs of popular recording artists, the songs in Girl From the North Country do not always sync with the story, rather they run parallel and expose something that we do not already know about a character or situation, a sort of peek into the subconscious. The boarding house, a converted family home of Nick and Elizabeth Laine, is inhabited by a handful of guests and visited by locals who are all trying to get through the harsh winter, and the cold hand being dealt by the depressing economic conditions of the era. Their situations are dire, and their suitcases are not the only baggage they bring to the home. Joining the Laines at their house are: Marianne Laine, their 19-year-old adopted daughter Gene Laine, their 20-year-old biological son Katherine (Kate) Draper, Gene’s ex-girlfriend Mr. Burke, a factory owner and boarder, and his wife Mrs. Burke Elias Burke, the Burke’s 30-year-old son Mrs. Neilsen, a widow and boarder Joe Scott, a boxer on the run Reverend Marlowe, a bible salesman Mr. Perry, a shoe mender Dr. Walker, a physician Bob Dylan’s roots are in folk music and thus his lyrics are brimming with storytelling and poetry. It makes perfect sense that this Nobel Prize-winning artist would commission a work using words from some of his iconic works and some that deserved a second chance. Piecing the songs together with an original book is acclaimed Director and Playwright Conor McPherson, whose 2022 Tony Award nomination for Best Direction and Best Book of a Musical was for his musical theater debut. McPherson’s previous Broadway works of Shining City and The Seafarer earned Tony Nominations in the Best Play category. In total, Girl From the North Country earned seven Tony nominations, picking up a win for Simon Hale’s exquisite orchestrations and arrangements of these classic Bob Dylan tunes. Because the show takes place in a much different era musically from when Dylan’s music was originally conceived, Hale was given no restrictions to create a sound for each of the songs to work in coordination with the overall piece. As an audience, we experience completely reinvented versions of familiar songs that serve a bigger purpose than moving from scene to scene. They convey emotion, feeling, circumstance, and mood, as they are artfully intertwined with McPherson’s poignant dialogue. Thank you for joining us for this KeyBank Broadway Series performance. We look forward to seeing you back in a few months for Mrs. Doubtfire.

Enjoy,

28
