HANNA THEATRE AT PLAYHOUSE SQUARE

DEAR FRIENDS Welcome

Thank you for choosing to see a performance at Playhouse Square. We encourage you take in the historic beauty of our theaters and the bright lights of Euclid Avenue while you’re here. Our staff and RedCoat volunteers are ready to make your visit as memorable and enjoyable as possible.

Playhouse Square was saved by the community for the community, and we are proud to be the stewards of the legacy left to us by previous generations — now one of Cleveland’s brightest cultural gems. Our not-for-profit mission charges us to go beyond simply maintaining these incredible venues.

Every day we work to present a diverse offering of quality performances — Broadway, concerts, comedy, dance, film, family shows and more. We support arts education through a variety of programs that take place in the classroom, online and here at Playhouse Square. We lead a vibrant downtown destination that generates an annual economic impact exceeding $359 million for the region. Equally important are your experience and the memories you take with you.

This season, we are proud to open three national Broadway tours, made possible by Ohio’s theater tax credit, the talented crew and staff here at Playhouse Square, and you, our enthusiastic audiences.

Now, settle into your seat, leave the world outside for a little while and let yourself become absorbed in the magic of the story on stage before you.

With best wishes,

OUR GENEROUS SPONSORS

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING KARAMU HOUSE

DIRECTOR’S note

“…In

my mind…”

Karamu’s 25/26 season’s productions are connected by one powerful truth: music doesn’t just entertain — it carries the deepest messages of culture and community across generations. We are thrilled to present our holiday offering, A Motown Christmas, a lively, toe-tapping musical experience that combines the magic of Christmas with the timeless appeal of Motown’s greatest hits. Together, we’ll journey through the years and groove to the soundtrack of our lives.

This season marks a historic milestone — Karamu’s 110year anniversary. Throughout the year, we will present special programming and community engagements that honor this extraordinary achievement. This year also marks another milestone, my 10-year anniversary as Karamu’s President + CEO. It has been an honor to serve in this capacity, to build on the work of previous leaders while establishing a brighter vision for today and the future. So many of you have joined me on this journey, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Karamu House has stood for over a century as a beacon of cultural expression, inclusion, and excellence. But safeguarding our future requires all of us. Amid shifting arts funding on both state and national levels, the urgency to protect and sustain Black theatre has never been greater. We need your involvement and your investment! Join us on this mission by becoming a Karamu Champion. Your recurring monthly gift ensures that we can continue to preserve our legacy while creating new opportunities for generations to come.

Sign up today by using the QR code in the ad on the next page or visiting karamuhouse.org. Together, we can ensure that Karamu remains a vital force for storytelling, education, and community for another 110 years.

Peace,

ABOUT Karamu House

Over its 110 year history, Karamu has educated and cultivated generations of aspiring youth in all professions. It has developed a national reputation for nurturing African-American actors, artists and dancers. Among the notable performers who refined their crafts at Karamu and later found success in their fields were visual artists Charles Sallee and Elmer Brown, literary giant Langston Hughes, stage and film actors Robert Guillaume, Bill Cobbs, Ron O’Neal, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Richard Brooks, Debra Byrd, James Pickens Jr., and lmani Hakim to name a few. The great Ruby Dee has also been associated with Karamu House.

Today, Karamu is being reborn as a beating heart for the entire community, regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identification, or age, and retains its Historic identity as “a place of joyful gathering.” Core programs include a five-performance, socially-relevant and professional quality, theatre season; arts education in drama, music and dance for all ages; and community programming, such as a lecture series, and spoken word and music performances, that invite participation, engagement, reflection, and a re-commitment to cultural values. Karamu House also enjoys national prominence, being recognized as the oldest Black performing arts institution in the nation and is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

NATE JACOBS (Creator and Adapter) Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe founder and artistic director Nate Jacobs is a driving force in Florida’s theater scene. For over 30 years, this graduate of Florida A&M University has worked extensively in the community training and mentoring youth in the performing arts. He founded WBTT in 1999.

An actor, singer, comedian, playwright, composer and director, he has written, adapted, directed and acted in many shows. Jacobs has created both original and adapted works such as Ruby, Syncopated Avenue, Soul Man, Marvin Gaye: Prince of Soul, Love Sung in the Key of Aretha, A Motown Christmas, The Sam Cooke Story, Jazz Hot Mamas, Cotton Club Cabaret, and How I Got Over: A Gospel Musical, to name a few. His shows have won acclaim from critics and the public, resulting in sold-out performances throughout the run of the shows.

Nurturing the next generation of artists has always been at the heart of Jacobs’ plans for WBTT. He has been instrumental in bringing the following training/mentorship programs to life for WBTT: the “Young Artists Program” and “Independent Artists Program,” through which

Troupe members are able to showcase their talents with one-person shows; the “New Playwrights Series,” for emerging minority playwrights; and “Stage of Discovery,” a free summer musical theatre camp serving minority students – Stage of Discovery just celebrated its tenth anniversary in the summer of 2025.

As a result of Jacobs’ outstanding contributions to young people, the Sarasota County Branch NAACP Youth Council recognized him as one of its 2012 Men of Valor. In the spring of 2013, he was inducted into the Community Video Archives Hall of Fame for his significant contributions to the arts and education. In 2015, Jacobs was recognized as a “Champion of Diversity” for the arts during the Biz(941) and La Guia magazines’ Unity Awards Luncheon.

Jacobs was honored with the prestigious Larry Leon Hamlin Producer Award during the 2015 National (now International) Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, N.C., “due to his contributions to Black theatre specifically and American theatre in general.” In 2017, he was named a Goodwill Manasota Ambassador of the Year. The award honors “those who help change lives.” In October 2018, Jacobs received the Arts Leadership Award for Artistic Achievement from the Arts & Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County.

In 2021 Key Chorale honored Jacobs with the Perfect Pitch Award, which recognized him as a driving force in the arts and for his collaborations with other arts organizations, including “American Roots: The Gospel Experience,” a series of concert performances with WBTT performers and Key Chorale presented in three area churches in the fall of 2019.

In 2025, Jacobs was pinned as an honorary member of FAAME (the Florida African American Male Experience); FAAME is an innovative program at St. Petersburg College that is focused on enhancing educational and career opportunities for African-American males.

Now, WBTT is entering its 26th theatre season, with the theme “Soul Of A People.” The popular arts organization continues to showcase worldclass productions while mentoring artists of color through innovative programs offered throughout the year.

As Jacobs says, “While WBTT is dedicated to producing the finest dramatic and musical theatre, my dream — my true calling and purpose for founding this organization — has always been to

help young, aspiring artists who may otherwise be overlooked to develop their talents and have the opportunity to achieve success.”
