Foreword by Roisin McDonough, Chief Executive, Arts Council of Northern Ireland It’s a pleasure to welcome this new programme of events at The Playhouse. There is, as always, a great choice of arts and entertainment on offer, with the emphases on quality, innovation and inclusion.

Highlights range from gripping drama with Splodar Theatre Company, to flamenco guitarists Los Dramaticos, a new exhibition by local artist Joe Campbell and live theatre screenings with National Theatre Live. Whatever your taste, The Playhouse will ensure that there are opportunities for everyone to engage with everything that’s going on and to enjoy all the benefits of participating in the life of this dynamic venue. A dynamic folk orchestra from the multicultural melting pot of Sligo’s music scene.

Their output of original material keeps growing thanks to its diverse musical roots, creating a musical mix reflects the folk traditions of the various members as well as a lifetime of experience of the players involved across many genres of music.

Andrea Levy’s Orange Prize-winning novel Small Island comes to life in an epic new theatre adaptation, filmed live on stage as part of National Theatre Live’s 10th birthday.

Small Island embarks on a journey from Jamaica to Britain, through the Second World War to 1948 , the year the HMT Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury.

The occasional presence of Waterboy Steve Wickham in their ranks has drawn them added attention, and they have toured around the world, confirming their exhilarating live reputation far beyond Ireland's borders.

The play follows three intricately connected stories. Hortense yearns for a new life away from rural Jamaica, Gilbert dreams of becoming a lawyer, and Queenie longs to escape her Lincolnshire roots. Hope and humanity meet stubborn reality as the play traces the tangled history of Jamaica and the UK.

Francis Henshall becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe, a small time hood, now in Brighton to collect £6,000 from his fiancée’s dad. But Roscoe is really his sister Rachel posing as her own dead brother, who’s been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers. Holed up, the permanently ravenous Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a second job with one Stanley Stubbers, who is hiding from the police and waiting to be re-united with Rachel.

The Kilkennys are at the very forefront of folk groups taking Irish music to the world. BILLY CONNOLLY: THE SEX LIFE OF BANDAGES

The Inishowen Gospel Choir brings their varied repertoire to the intimate setting of The Playhouse, joined by three of the finest soul, gospel, jazz and blues singers in Ireland.

Founded in 2005 by two friends who wanted to bring the sound and spirit of gospel music to their community, the choir has performed with some of the best-known names in the Irish music scene.

They will be joined by Amanda St John, US Irishbased singer Mirenda Rosenberg who has wowed sold-out audiences in Ireland, the US, and the UK, and Jaime Nanci, described by legendary Irish blues singer Mary Coughlan, as “the best Irish singer and songwriter of the last 30 years”.

A story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery.

Featuring Broadway hits such as All That Jazz, Mister Cellophane and The Cell Block Tango, this production is not to be missed.

Set in the legendary city during the roaring “jazz hot” 20s, Chicago tells the story of two rival vaudevillian murderesses locked up in Cook County Jail. Nightclub star Velma’s serving time for killing her husband and sister after finding

the two in bed together. Driven chorus girl Roxie’s been tossed in the joint for bumping off the lover she’s been cheating on her husband with.

Not one to rest on her laurels, Velma enlists the help of prison matron Mama Morton and slickster lawyer Billy Flynn, who turn Velma’s incarceration into a murder-of-the-week media frenzy, thus preparing the world for a splashy showbiz comeback. But Roxie’s got some of her own tricks up her sleeve…

· Compete for a Bursary of £1000 toward Music Theatre Education

·Receive intense training / rehearsal with a Professional Production team working toward a performance of Chicago, the Musical at The Playhouse.

LILLIPUT THEATRE COMPANY is one of Northern Ireland’s leading theatre companies for adults with learning disabilities.

Recent productions include a specially adapted version of Macbeth and commissioned plays exploring disability rights. Exhibition of Artworks by Joe Campbell September 2019 Award winning Derry born painter, poet and musician Joe Campbell exhibits a series of surreal, digitally-painted artworks, that reflect the artist’s own personal and particular experience of the Northern Irish ‘Troubles’ and how it impacted on his life.

Joe has exhibited paintings for many years in Derry with the McGilloway Gallery, The Cowley Gallery; The Void; The Nerve Visual and further afield with exhibitions in Boston and Berlin.

Exhibition of Artworks by Mark Luukas October 2019

Mark Luukas has been painting professionally for over twenty years and studied a higher national diploma and A level at the northwest regional college in Derry.

Mark has had solo and joint exhibitions of his work in Derry and his work has buffered from abstraction to semi abstraction and to representations of memories over the years. His work in this exhibition is based on memory and invention where the paint brush becomes an He has been the recipient of Individual Artist awards extension of himself in a sophisticated reality of from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and was a self-expression.

ON PERMANENT DISPLAY AT THE PLAYHOUSE… “Laying strong roots within our community whilst always reaching for the sky” In June 2019 The Playhouse Painters and students from the North West Regional College HND & Apprenticeship Painting Programmes held a join exhibition of their work.

The HND students worked to a live brief, developing stunning artwork around the theme of The Playhouse and our work for the exhibition.

Apprentice painters then prepared select spaces in our building for the work to be permanently displayed.

The work can now be seen throughout our building and we encourage everyone to come see these stunning pieces of original work.

EXPLORING THE PEACE: THEATRE OF WITNESS WORKSHOPS

What is Theatre of Witness?

Theatre of Witness is an inspirational project allowing victims and survivors of the Troubles to re-tell their often harrowing experiences on-stage through theatre performance.

Who are the performers in Theatre of Witness?

Performers include former police officers, paramilitaries and relatives of those killed or injured. Audiences witness performers from vastly different backgrounds who work together on-stage to give a message of understanding, empathy, reconciliation and hope.

Tell me about the workshops?

Workshops enable performers (e.g. ex-police officer and ex-paramilitary) to screen video footage of their stories from the original Theatre of Witness production, and talk about their experiences.

What age are the workshops for? Age 14+ How long do they last? Approximately 2 hours.

Group size? From 12 – 60. Workshops can be tailored to suit different group sizes.

A groundbreaking Virtual Reality documentary. This immersive film experience, which tells the stories of individuals whose life near the border was severely impacted by The Troubles, will be given its premier in November 2019.

A Japanese- American director with a passion for daring new works of theatre.

Ailin will create a production exploring the theme of First Responders, individuals who were first at the scene of atrocities during The Troubles.

Production will premiere on 26th – 29th February 2020 The Playhouse

DAMIAN GORMAN

Is a poet and playwright. His work has garnered awards as diverse as a Better Ireland Award and an MBE, a Golden Harp and a BAFTA. For more than 30 years he has also worked with other people on their stories.

Damian will be working around the theme of 1972 – a reflection of The Troubles.

Production will premiere on 23rd – 25th April 2020 at The Playhouse
