June 2025

June 2025
Frisco ranked 37 out of 100 in the Trust for Public Land’s 2025 ParkScore® index. Published annually, the index is a national comparison of park systems across the 100 most populated cities in the United States. It measures park systems according to five categories reflective of an excellent city park system: access, investment, amenities, acreage, and equity.
Play Frisco was awarded the 2025 Innovation in Environmental Resilience Award by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) for the Blackland Prairie Restoration & Education program! This award recognizes a park and recreation agency leading an innovative project that creates localized solutions for addressing global or regional environmental challenges.
Coordinated by the Natural Resources Division, the ongoing program builds awareness for the endangered Blackland Prairie in Frisco and addresses this environmental challenge through an interdisciplinary approach that combines restoration, education, and cultural connection. Frisco was awarded for its multi-layered strategy, including public events, service learning, teacher workshops, museum programming, and hands-on restoration. We’re thrilled and honored to receive this prestigious award and we’re immensely grateful for the staff, volunteers, and local groups for their hard work making this program possible to preserve this vital ecosystem in our community!
The Programming and Youth Services team revitalized Camp Play Frisco’s home base room at the Frisco Athletic Center with updated furniture, new signage, and organizational enhancements, including Play Friscobranded hooks and decor (pictured, right). These updates aim to create a welcoming and functional space for both staff and participants. The sold-out Camp Play Frisco starts June 2 and runs weekly through August 8.
The FAC has three new ELEIKO Deadlift Platforms on the Fitness Floor (pictured, left). In May, the Fitness Floor had over 30,000 visits!
Park Operations staff completed several park improvement projects in time for summer. Several neighborhood basketball courts were resurfaced and the goals were given fresh paint, including Fairways Green Park (pictured, above).
Two digital kiosks were installed at Frisco Commons Park to enhance the experience of park visitors and encourage community engagement. The kiosks have interactive touchscreens where users can explore maps, park services, and a list of upcoming events.
The Frisco Water Park opened for the summer on May 24! After months of preparation, maintenance, and staff training, the facility was in top form to welcome families and guests for the start of summer. The first 100 guests also received commemorative 2025 beach towels. It is exciting to see our community enjoying the results of all the hard work that went into getting the park ready!
The splash pads at Frisco Commons Park and J.R. Newman Park also opened in May.
The Special Events team is hard at work laying the groundwork for a summer full of unforgettable experiences for our community, including Frisco Summer Jam, Frisco Freedom Fest, and July is Parks & Recreation Month.
The Frisco Fireballs, The Grove at Frisco Commons’ spirited chair volleyball team, took on the Frisco Fire Department in an actionpacked match (pictured, above)! While the Fire Department brought plenty of energy and heart, our active adults claimed the victory. It was a fun, friendly competition filled with laughter, high-fives, and community spirit. We had a blast hosting our hometown heroes. Frisco Police Department — you’re next!
May also featured a Mother’s Day recognition, a Cinco de Mayo fiesta, and The Grove’s inaugural cornhole tournament. Looking ahead, June is packed with exciting events, including the annual Summer Carnival on June 18 — a member favorite!
The Frisco Heritage Center joined the Roughriders for Family Day at the May 13 ballgame. Heritage Supervisor Lindsay spoke to the crowd from the 3rd base dugout to promote the Heritage Museum and Play Frisco (pictured, above). Heritage staff also had a table at the game to promote the NASA exhibit and the new Heritage Explorers program (pictured, right).
Play Frisco staff built awareness for City programs, services, and careers at several outreach opportunities. Staff collaborated with local Frisco influencer Breshell West to host a “Play Date” at Frisco Commons Park (pictured, left). Families played on the park’s popular playground, enjoyed snacks, and learned about urban wildlife and ways to play.
Almost 400 Corbell Elementary students learned about careers in parks and recreation at their annual Possibilities Day (pictured, below).
The first-ever Frisco Bass Derby on May 17 was a fantastic time (pictured, above)! Anglers of all ages competed for the largest bass at three fishing ponds, and those with the largest bass won prizes. The largest bass caught was just under 8 lbs.!
Hundreds of residents were engaged through naturefocused programs across Frisco in May, fostering ecological awareness and well-being through play for all ages and abilities.
These programs covered a variety of educational topics from monarch butterflies and milkweed plants to learning about biodiversity with hands-on activities.
At Grand Park, residents participated in a nighttime BioBlitz and mothing session to explore the park’s nocturnal insect life. The team also supported Bird City Texas outreach at The Grove at Frisco Commons with a seedball activity, promoting bird-safe lighting and native plant awareness (pictured, below).
The NRD Operations team responded to storm impacts in May by clearing fallen trees and removing mud and debris from trails, including Starwood Trail. Routine maintenance continued across natural areas, ensuring safe and accessible paths throughout the park network. Staff also provided ongoing support at Monarch View Park, assisting with vegetation management and site preparation in coordination with education staff and volunteers.
These efforts reflect NRD’s commitment to sustaining safe, functional, and engaging spaces for public use and stewardship.
The Frisco Heritage Center had its third Second Saturday event on May 10. The program highlighted the museum’s NASA exhibit and the science behind rockets. Astronaut Chris Cassidy gave a fantastic presentation about his three space missions. The museum also featured two outdoor rocket STEM experiments involving household supplies such as a 2-liter bottle of water, bike pump, film canister and Alka-Seltzer. George, a representative from the Dallas Area Rocket Society, gave a presentation on rockets and how they work. The museum had other activities, space food samples, and tours of the historic Smith-Muse House. The next Second Saturday is June 14 with a robotics theme!
In early June, North Texas-based artist Alec DeJesus is finishing the outdoor mural on the south wall of the Frisco Discovery Center. The Arts and Culture Advisory Board selected his concept in February out of a group of conceptual submissions for the project.
The Parvin Branch Trail is 95% complete, with remaining tasks including guardrail installation and sod for erosion control (pictured, right). After these tasks are finished, the contractor will clean up the site for a preliminary inspection.
This project will connect almost 2 miles of trail from PGA Pkwy. to east of Preston Rd.
