the new year. It signifies the beginning or origin from which all things arise. The character “一” represents unity and the starting point, while “ 元” denotes greatness and the beginning. Together, “一元” symbolizes the grand beginning of things.

As the new year commences, it brings forth a sense of vitality and energy, and everything in the universe experiences a rejuvenating renewal. With the inspiring slogan “We As One,” JCI Sha Tin embarks on a journey of unity and collective growth. I extend my heartfelt wishes to everyone for a year brimming with beauty and positivity.

The new year brings with it a fresh start, an opportunity for growth and transformation. For JCI Sha Tin, the year ahead is all about unity and membership growth. With the empowering slogan “We As One,” JCI Sha Tin aims to create a vibrant community of passionate individuals seeking personal and collective development.

To achieve the ambitious goal of membership growth, we understand the importance of laying a strong foundation. The first step is to foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie within the existing membership. By organizing team-building activities, workshops, and social events, JCI Sha Tin aims to create a supportive environment where members feel valued and connected.

JCI Sha Tin recognizes the need to expand its reach beyond its current members. This involves engaging with the local community, collaborating with other organizations, and actively promoting the brand awareness of JCI Sha Tin. By organizing community service projects, partnering with local businesses, and participating in public events, JCI Sha Tin aims to attract individuals who share a passion for community development.

Junior Chamber International Sha Tin (JCI Sha Tin) was founded at the AGM held on 25 October, 1987 at Shatin Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club, and is the 17th Local Organization Member (LOM) affiliated to Junior Chamber International Hong Kong. RIVELIGHT has two parts to its meaning — “River” refers to the continuity of new comrades stepping into comrades ‘ treads in changeful years with use of the imagery of an endless stream of flowing waters and “Light” refers to the leading position of our organization. The overall theme for the chapter and RIVELIGHT is to demonstrate the progression of JCI Sha Tin and the district throughout the years and how close connections between the two brought about a strong, dynamic and lively community despite challenges faced. 季刊名為「RIVERLIGHT」,有川流不息、引領前行的意思。 2023年度整體主題為「薪火相傳,生生不息」 。此季刊意在展現沙田青商過 去36年與沙田社區風雨同舟、砥礪前行的精神及其相關人員的緊密連繫。

Mr. Frederick Yu Honorary Patron District Officer (Sha Tin) “Connect to Evolve” is the theme of JCI Hong Kong in this year. We encourages every members and chapter to prioritize building relationships, collaborating with others, and embracing new ideas in order to evolve and grow. By working together and learning from one another, we can achieve great things.

We at JCI, a global network of young leaders with same value and mission, located in different country, working on verities projects, members can know the difference and advantage form different location that have JC movement. Hong Kong JC must look for opportunities beyond the city. We have to be adapted at telling the world the good stories of Hong Kong and let JCI Hong Kong shine in the world.

In 2024, president Elaine Tang will lead and manage JCI ShaTin by “We as one”. Together, we can amplify our impact and inspire a new generation of leaders who are making a difference in their communities and beyond. I am confident that president Elaine and the board of directors will continue to provide development opportunities for the members and create impact in JCI ShaTin and community.

JCI Sha Tin, full of vitality, with members united as one, such as the traditional dragon boat team, where everyone works together to achieve one goal. JCI Sha Tin develops one impactful community project after another.

The theme of JCI Hong Kong in 2024 is “Connect to Evolve”. It encourages everyone to actively connect with various sectors, including the government, business community, social welfare organizations, and every member in the society. When we are united, the sparks will undoubtedly bring greater benefits and growth. Members can achieve both serving society and personal development.

As always, JCI Sha Tin strives to collaborate closely with Shatin District Office and local organizations, bringing forth numerous effective projects for the Shatin area. This year, we hope to extend these connections beyond Shatin, sharing the benefits throughout Hong Kong.

Under the leadership of the President, Elaine Tang, JCI Sha Tin will be united as one. May all members form a strong team, We as One, lead JCI Sha Tin to a new height.

Andrew Carnegie once said, “Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.”

Undoubtedly, every successful organization thrives on the power of teamwork. The evolution of mankind has always depended on joining hands with each other. From ancient pyramids to spacecrafts, everything is possible only because of teamwork. This process goes on in parallel with time.

Consequently, we place a high value on collaboration in our Chapter.

I am glad to be one of the Presidential Advisors in 2024. More significantly, I will be witnessing the personal development and positive impact created by every Sha Tin member.

President Elaine is a hard-working, humble, and committed leader. I am confident that JCI Sha Tin under her leadership will strive for excellence.

I agree with the spirit of this year’s slogan ‘As One Team’. I believe JCI Sha Tin shall act as one team to unite internally, provide community service to Sha Tin District and provide opportunities for our members to grow.

In 2024, we will stand by this young and energetic team. Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.

Lam Hin Chung:

A Living Sabre Dream Lam Hin Chung, an awardee of Ten Outstanding Young Persons Hong Kong 2023, is a name that resonates with many Hong Kong people, especially those who are passionate about Sabre Fencing (佩劍). He is one of the early leaders for this fencing variant. Lam has overcome numerous challenges and achieved proud milestones in his fencing career, and he continues to inspire the next generation of fencers with his vision and values. In this feature story, we will explore his personal journey, from his humble beginnings to his glorious moments, and from his Sha Tin memories to his future plans.

Prelude Lam Hin Chung was born in Hong Kong in 1986. He was not particularly interested in any particular type of sports initially, and he played some badminton with his friends. He tried different sports, and one day, he came across fencing by chance. His dad encouraged him to give it a try, and he found Sabre Fencing unique and fascinating. Sabre Fencing is a type of fencing that involves using the edge of the blade to score points, and it requires speed, logic, body coordination, and sensitivity. Lam gradually fell in love with Sabre Fencing, and he trained hard to improve his skills to compete in local and international events.

In 2002, he played in the World Cadets and Juniors Fencing Championships in Turkey. It was his first fencing competition outside Hong Kong, and he felt like the people there were so strong and advanced. He was motivated to practice more when he returned to Hong Kong, and he set his goal to become a professional fencer.

Overcoming Challenges In 2006, Lam Hin Chung decided to devote himself to Sabre Fencing as a full-time athlete. He participated in the Doha Asian Games, and he was close to winning a medal, but he lost by just one point. He was disappointed, but he did not give up.

He thought he was still young and he could still work on his dream.

However, he faced another challenge soon after. Given that the other three fencing competitions that the Hong Kong team

joined all got an award each, and some of his teammates decided to quit the team for other occupations. Lam Hin Chung was left alone, feeling lonely and frustrated. It would be hard for him to improve and play competitions without his teammates.

He decided to take a bold step and help popularise Sabre Fencing in Hong Kong. He stepped up as a coach and nurtured potential Sabre Fencing athletes. He taught them the skills and the spirit of the perseverence, and he saw them grow from time to time. Some of them even won awards from the World Cadets and Juniors Fencing Championships in 2010.

Lam Hin Chung was proud of his students, and he felt like they were his motivation and support, for him to fuel his passion and perseverance to continue his road to his dream, which is the Olympics.

Every Cloud has a Silver Lining Lam Hin Chung’s fencing career was not only full of challenges, but also full of blessings. He met his wife, who was also an athlete, after the 2010 Asian Games. She encouraged him to continue striving for his dream, and she wanted to watch him in the London Olympics. He was determined to make her proud, and he worked very hard and trained himself overseas in 2011 to rank up.

In 2012, he qualified for the London Olympics, which was his ultimate goal. He was thrilled and excited, and he prepared himself for the biggest stage of his life.

He also had the support of his family, especially his dad and his sister. His dad was the one who introduced him to Sabre Fencing, and he even DIY a sabre to allow his sister to play and understand the sport. His sister was inspired by him, and she also became a fencer. Lam Hin Chung was grateful for his family’s love and care, and he wanted to share his joy and success with them.

Looking Ahead After the COVID-19 pandemic, Lam Hin Chung announced his retirement from competitive fencing. He said he wanted to focus on his coaching and his family. He continued his passion to teach and empower the younger generations to transform, then love fencing, and even learn perseverance that is transferrable in many occasions. He also had some plans for the future, such as:

• Continuing to popularise Sabre Fencing in Hong Kong and Asia • Allowing more people to know and learn the sport • Helping those in need to start learning Sabre Fencing, and allowing more talents to join Sabre Fencing and become passionate about the sport • Broadening the athlete base in Hong Kong for Sabre Fencing, and finding more talents • Hosting an Asia Sabre Fencing Competition, aiming to foster the development of Sabre Fencing in Hong Kong, China, or even the entire Asia Lam Hin Chung’s vision and values are aligned with the JCI Creed, which states that faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life, that the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations, that economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise, that government should be of laws rather than of men, that earth’s great treasure lies in human personality, and that service to humanity is the best work of life. He is a living example of the JCI Mission and Vision, which are to provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change, and to be the leading global network of young active citizens.

Sha Tin Memories Lam Hin Chung has a special connection with Sha Tin, as he lived inside the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) since 2005.

He mentioned, “I am also a Sha Tin Yau (Sha Tin Neighbour).”

He remembered there was a period of time when he and his teammates would go to Shing Mun River to fish in midnight.

He also loved running while enjoying the views of Hong Kong, and he liked to run on the shore of Shing Mun River when he lived in HKSI. When he was unhappy, he would also relieve his stress by having a walk next to Shing Mun River. The steps taken in Sha Tin, was a part of his unforgettable memory while striving for his ultimate Sabre goal. Nothing is impossible for a willing heart.

We appreciate and admire Lam Hin Chung for his work and his perseverence. He is a living sabre dream, and he is a shining star of Sha Tin.

2023 Recap One Family, One Network Formal Visit to JCI Wakayama

Joint Chapter Monthly Fellowship Gatherings

November 2023 was a relaxing climate to enjoy outdoor activity, we embraced the nature with JCI Island through Golf Course cum November Monthly Fellowship Gathering!

We’ve had a successful formal visit to JCI Wakayama in Japan. The visit included a physical formal meeting, a welcoming dinner, and the opportunity to experience the serene art of the Japanese tea ceremony, providing a valuable cultural exchange between the two sister chapters.

We finally took the chance to meet with our friendly association, Jiangmen Youth Association, after COVID-19 Pandemic. Together with Project Insight, our members have visited Artificial Intelligent Enterprises in Jiangmen such as food factory and innovation hub to understand the development opportunities.

In December 2023, we have wrapped up the year by Award Presentation 2023 cum December Monthly Fellowship Gathering, we thanked and recognized the active participation of our outstanding members!

One Community, One World Empowered Dragon

Ten Outstanding Young Persons Selection 2023

JCI Sha Tin organized the Empowered Dragon event during the Dragon Boat Festival, bringing together 21 local chapters for a thrilling dragon boat race. Participants underwent six training sessions to enhance their paddling skills. The race highlighted the importance of teamwork, emphasizing the need to paddle as one to propel the boat forward.

Led by JCI Hong Kong President Senator Kenneth Yu and JCI Sha Tin President Shirley Tsang, the event united members of JCI Hong Kong and empowered them through friendly competition and camaraderie.

The V-Support Sha Tin Buddies Project organized by Junior Chamber International Sha Tin has concluded successfully, leaving a positive impact on the Sha Tin community.

Featured in the Sha Tin Festival, the event aimed to promote harmony and unity. Recognizing the importance of the mental well-being of the elderly, particularly during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic, the project introduced floor curling to the elderly, providing social interaction opportunities and combating isolation. The closing ceremony and floor curl competition was held at Ma On Shan Tsang Pik Shan Secondary School, and brought a unique experience to over a hundred Sha Tin senior citizens.

TOYP has recognized over 40 batches of young leaders of Hong Kong, and this year the TOYP Service Day is a breakthrough drama that shares how the TOYP awardees grow upon today’s success to ignite our passion!

Flash back the first event to join JCI Sha Tin was a joint Monthly Felowship Gathering event, I was being invited by Past President Yannes Wong. It was such an impressed experience, it was full of young and energetic members, everyone was so nice.

After that, the second event that I had joined was the Dragon Boat Festival, which turned my determination to join as a JCers. I love to see how everyone devoted and fight for the prize with no reason but just for fun and glory to the chapter.

Then glad that I had participated in the organizing committee of Annual General Meeting and Officer Training Camp, which gave me opportunities to get to know much more about Shatin yau and our culture.

Even though I am still a prospecting member at this moment, but I just can’t wait to join much more of Sha Tin events and get to know everyone more!

Hi, this is Hannah!

I am working in Consulate General of Dominican Republic in HK & MO now! My job is related to diplomatic, so I have a lot business trips to different countries to discuss the external affair matters.

My personal motto is “Life is about waiting for the right moment to act !You are very much on time, and in your time zone!” Just be patient and keep working hard , then everything will come!

I am a new comer of JCI and I just join this community at September of 2023. Because I am too busy with my job so I am not very active within this period, but I will try to attend more events and be part of JCI in 2024 !

Sha Tin Column Hong Kong Sports Institute If you are a sports fan, you might want to check out the Hong Kong Sports Institute, one of the featured buildings in Sha Tin. The Hong Kong Sports Institute is the training base for elite athletes in Hong Kong, who compete in various local and international events. The institute provides world-class facilities, coaching, sports science and medicine, education and personal development services to the athletes. It also hosts major sports competitions and events, such as the Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships and the Asian Junior Athletics Championships.

The Hong Kong Sports Institute is located on the bank of the Shing Mun River, next to the Sha Tin Racecourse. It covers an area of 34 hectares and has a total floor area of 106,000 square meters. one completed in 2013. The new facilities include a 10-lane Olympic standard swimming pool, a multipurpose indoor sports hall, a fitness training center, a rowing center, a cycling track and a sports information center.

The Hong Kong Sports Institute is open to the public on selected days and times, depending on the availability of the facilities. Visitors can book online or by phone to use the facilities or join guided tours. The institute also offers various sports courses and programs for children and adults, such as swimming, badminton, table tennis, fencing and squash.
