Ingredients of PVC that may impact the selection of heat stabilizers

Stabilizers are added to PVC to make the product capable of guarding against heat and any kind of mechanical degradation. The biggest reason why these heat stabilizers are so much in demand in PVC is their improved resistance against high temperatures.

Additives are added with heat stabilizers to shield the polymers from causing degraded effects during the processing time. Let's take a look at them.

Top 4 ingredients of PVC stabilizers that affect the selection of heat stabilizers

Each of the Vinyl ingredients used in the PVC stabilizer affects the heat stability of the PVC. Let's take a look at them.

1. Plasticizers:

These deal with the elasticity, elongation, and flexibility of the compounds. However, these are poor volatile organic substances. The different kinds of

plasticizers include linear polyesters, esters of aromatic and aliphatic dibasic acids, etc.

The most interesting part about this Vinly ingredient is that it does not affect an organic-based stabilizer or any other stabilizer's heat stability. Yet, there might be a few exceptions.

 Those containing chlorinated paraffin and phosphates will require additional epoxy co-stabilizer and phosphitechelator that are combined in a metal (calcium/zinc or barium/zinc structure).

 PVC compounds contain Epoxy plasticizers that combine metal stabilizer structures and result in improving the heat and light stability of the phosphate-stabilized compounds.

2. Lubricants:

One of the most important yet least understood concepts of PVC stabilizers is their lubricity. This is because it is very difficult to determine the rigid formulation of the PVC. These have been categorized according to their chemistry and behavior- internal and external. The terms are based on their usage in the PVC compounds.

3. Pigments:

The organic-based stabilizers use pigments and dyes upon a thorough research. Several data have been found on these substances that claim that they effect they resist oxidation and chemical reactions, improve light and heat stability, etc. Thus, if an individual wants to use such a stabilizer for PVC that can suit the filler, resin, plasticizers, and other vinyl ingredients, it is likely to safeguard pigment also.

4. Fillers:

These are solid, stagnant mineral compounds that are added to a formulation for the sole purpose of improving its opacity, reducing expenses, and also achieving favorable end-use properties.

The most common type of filler is called calcium carbonate. But, the best part about this ingredient is that the heat stability of PVC is not affected by calcium carbonate. However, you might need to add a few metal stabilizer systems to increase their levels.

Thus it is important to choose the right stabilizer for PVC that consist of the above-mentioned additives.
