FROM THE EDITOR

Dear Platform reader,

What a first term we’ve all had! The past few months have been a whirlwind of deadlines, nights out, and emotions but we got there in the end. This edition that you’re reading right now is Platform’s first Christmas print edition we’ve had in the past seven years and is one of my biggest achievements to date as Editor and I can’t put into words how proud I am of it. It is packed with all things Christmas in Notts, from Christmas markets, to gift guides of all sorts, and even a bit of sporting history.

So, for now, enjoy this monumental edition in our history and your winter break and see you in Term 2!

Season’s Greetings, Rucsandra

Platform Magazine Editor-in-Chief and President

FROM THE NTSU PRESIDENT

Hello NTU and Merry Christmas!

I hope everyone has had a fantastic first term and is looking forward to the Christmas break. NTSU has done a lot for students this term and we are always here to support our members. Christmas in Nottingham has so much to offer so make sure you check out some key highlights, like the Nottingham Winter Wonderland, the Motorpoint Arena, or the Victoria Centre. Although there is lots to do, it is important to remember to look after yourselves, take that much needed break and recharge for Term 2. NTU Student Support is still open and so is the Information and Advice Service if you feel like you need help. Christmas is a time for everyone and if you feel isolated or need to reach out, don’t hesitate to do so!

Enjoy the break and we’ll see you for Term 2!

Society Spotlight: Meet NTSU’s Ice Skating Society

Breaking the ice at the beginning of the Covid-filled 2020/21 academic year, Nottingham Trent Students’ Union’s Ice Skating Society has overcome all obstacles and has been continuously flourishing ever since. Our Editor, Rucsandra Moldoveanu, finds out what it’s like to be a member.

1. What do you like most about ice skating?

I find ice skating really therapeutic. When I skate I don’t really think about anything else. I’m just focused on what I’m doing and if I’m doing it to music for example, I think about what’s coming up next in the routine. It’s really beneficial and it’s also a fun sport and I feel like it’s not like any other sport out there.

2. What’s your favourite ice skating trick?

I really like a sit spin and I also quite like the loop jump.

3. Are you working on any tricks at the moment?

At the moment, I’m just trying to get all of my single jumps consistent.

We are planning on hosting a gala in March so I’m sort of thinking now about putting together a routine and working towards making that look nice.

4. How much experience do you need in order to join the Ice Skating Society?

You don’t need any experience at all. We are super beginner-friendly and strongly encourage

people who are beginners to come. We offer group lessons, we do beginner, intermediate and advanced. The beginners sessions are for people who have genuinely never ice skated before or have just gone ice skating once at Christmas. By about a couple of months they can go backwards.

5. What’s a usual ice skating society session like?

It’s on a Tuesday between 4:45pm and 5:45pm. The way that it normally runs is people are free to skate around and do whatever they want for the whole

NEWS 4 I ISSUE 28: CHRISTMAS I PLATFORM MAGAZINE

hour, but a third of the rink is sectioned off for group lessons which are run by coaches from the National Ice Centre. The first half is intermediate and beginner and the second half is advanced. However, there’s no pressure to do a group lesson or if you’ve never done one before and you suddenly want to do it, you can do it.

6. What kind of events should people expect after Christmas break? After Christmas we’re planning on doing a ‘welcome back’ drinks night which will probably be after one of our skating sessions so we’re already together. We’re also going to do some trips to a roller rink in London called Skateland. Our biggest

event is obviously going to be the gala which is in March. We’ve only just started planning it but it’d be great to see as many people there as possible. It’s open to members, non-members, and members of the public.

7. What would you tell students who are too afraid to join the Ice Skating Society? Message one of us, we can meet you, we’ll stay with you the whole session. We’re all there to support one another. It’s a really supportive society and I’d say just give it a go because you never know, you might really love it.

8. What’s your favourite memory of being a member of the Ice Skating Society? My favourite memory is

meeting people who really like the sport. It’s quite a big sport in America and sometimes you think there’s not actually that many people that know about ice skating. So I think it’s the fact that meeting so many people who really like the sport and want to see you do well in your ice skating is really nice.

9. What do you think about the ice rink in Old Market Square?

I’ve never seen an ice rink that’s in the air before, it’s crazy. I’m really excited to go. It’s such a cool opportunity because since I’ve been in Nottingham I haven’t had a chance to experience the Christmas ice rink because of Covid.

Sneinton Christmas Market stalls share thoughts on last minute relocation

Last November saw a tragic day for the city when it was announced that iconic landmark, Nottingham Castle, was to be closed down after succumbing to liquidation. The aftermath of that came with the revelation that Nottingham Castle’s first ever Christmas Market would no longer go ahead, resulting in heartbreak for stall traders. However, it wasn’t

long before the planned Christmas Market event was picked up by Nottingham Business Improvement District, Pitch Presents, and the Creative Quarter who arranged for the market to take place at Sneinton Market Avenues on Saturday, November 26 and Sunday, November 27.

Several stall traders have shared their thoughts on the lastminute relocation. Freelance designer

Lisa Barnaby, 43, from Ruddington, set up her Soapary trader stall with her business partner and twin sister, Ann Kantor.

Lisa said: “It’s honestly so fantastic that we were able to be relocated.

“The people who stepped in last minute and helped relocate us were really kind to do it because obviously you’re all geared up to a three-day event at the castle

so it would just be devastating to have all of that be for nothing.”

She continued: “I think it’s hard to say what we would have done here versus at the castle as obviously it would have been their first ever market, so we’re just really pleased that we had somewhere to stand at the weekend.”

Dr Rose Deakin, 39, from Gedling, is the founder of The Crop Club.

She said: “We were pretty sad when we heard about the news that the castle had gone

into liquidation and were devastated for the people who had sadly lost their jobs.

“In the early stages we weren’t really sure about what was going to happen, we weren’t sure if we were going to now have the weekend off or anything really. “But we were really happy that people rallied around so quickly to make this event possible.”

Some traders shared their thoughts on potential sale setbacks as a result of the sudden venue change. Apple Nellies stall trader Shaun

Copeland, 56, from Derby, said: “We don’t know too much about what we were expecting from Nottingham Castle as obviously it was their first ever market, but if I was to place a wager, I do think sales would have probably been quite more successful had the event gone as originally planned.” Despite the venue change, over 20 independent traders attended the Sneinton Christmas Market.

24 days to a BEAUTY-filled Christmas, which ones came out on top?

From miniature chocolates that we couldn’t wait to open, the history of the advent calendar has certainly evolved. The beauty industry has kept up with this, but are these beauty advent calendars worth the hefty price tag?

First up we have MAC, worth over £405, their limited-edition advent calendar is retailing at £165 (saving of £240). It contains 16 full-sized products and eight miniatures. There are 11 lip products, including MAC’s bestselling shades: Velvet Teddy and Mehr. They have included four

eyeshadows in neutral tones, setting spray, facial oil, brow products and liners. We would have liked to see their latest MACStack mascara full-sized.

Next up we have Charlotte Tilbury’s Diamond Chest, worth £245 and retailing for £150 (saving of £95). It includes 12 products, five of which are full-sized, and seven miniatures. The packaging is beautiful and can be reused to store your beauty favourites. However, what happened to a 24-day calendar? For £150, we would have liked more fullsized products.

Benefit’s calendar, worth over £134, is now retailing at £59.50 (saving of £74.50). It features 12 of their best-sellers in mini and fun sizes. This set could be perfect for the right brow shade (shade 3), however, spending £59.50 and not being able to use the brow pencil and gel is a big no.

No one can deny the excitement advent calendars bring us. The anticipation, Christmas packaging and limitededition releases keep influencers busy, give gift-givers choice and beauty lovers excitement. MAC have pulled it out of the calendar this year, with their 16 full-sized products, wearable shades and giant £240 saving.

With Christmas celebrations fast approaching, now is the time to start the search for the perfect party outfit. This style guide hopes to provide some festive inspiration.

A sparkly, sequin-covered dress is a Christmas party classic, perfect for celebrating in festive style. In the run up to Christmas a selection of sparkly dresses can be found at H&M and ASOS, ideal for a student budget.

For a more subtle party outfit, a blazer is an important wardrobe staple. Whether oversized or tailored, with fitted dress or matching trousers, blazers can seamlessly amplify a look. A variety of blazers can be found at Zara or Primark, for a budget friendly option.

Trousers are ideal for a Christmas party outfit. Available in an assortment of styles, such as tailored or flared, and festive materials including checks, glitter and leather, trousers have the potential to become a bold statement piece. Stradivarius and ASOS stock a variety of trousers.

To pair with trousers, a satin top is the perfect Christmas option. Whether the style is a button up shirt or a cowl-neck cami, the shine of satin is so festive and can effortlessly elevate a pair of jeans or trousers. A range of satin tops can be found at H&M and ASOS.

Heels are ideal for dressing up an outfit with a little sparkle or a festive bow but aren’t always for everyone. An on-trend shoe at the moment is the loafer, which can be paired with skirts or trousers without compromising the elevation of an outfit. A smart-casual option is the white trainer, always on trend while providing extra comfort. These options can be found at Schuh and ASOS.

Hopefully these ideas sparked inspiration for trends to follow throughout the festive season, to feel good and have fun at Christmas parties.

Meet The Underclass Meet The Underclass

Across the country, thousands of independent bands are working tirelessly to achieve their dreams, and no one knows this better than four-piece, Stoke born band The Underclass.

Vocalist Jorge Wilson, 20, decided to form The Underclass in 2018, with his childhood friend, drummer Adam Badenjiki, 20, and later joined forces with bass player Aaron Smith and guitarist Matt Trevor, both 22. The band is often commended for their merging of indie and rock tones, to create the typical ‘The Underclass’ sound. When speaking on their musical influences, Matt and Aaron explained that their rock inspirations, Royal Blood and Stereophonics, contrast from Jorge and Adam’s wide range of influences, including Sam Fender and The Smiths.

The Underclass’ individual style has gained them almost 4,000 monthly Spotify listeners. But perhaps their most exciting

achievement occurred this summer when the band performed at YNot Festival in Derbyshire.

Guitarist Matt said: “I do not think the feeling has fully sunk in yet, the weekend was surreal for all of us. Fate was on our side too, with being asked to play a second set on the Sunday, you just could not write it really.”

The Underclass have also performed in Nottingham, previously playing at Hockley-based record store, Rough Trade, where they will be performing again on Saturday, December 3. ‘Bad Dreams’ is the group’s latest single released on October 21, 2022. When asked how they created the song, Matt replied: “It is always a hard one to answer because we have known the song for so long, having written and recorded it at the start of the year, so it has been in and around our set for a while now.”

If you would like to show your support, stream The Underclass’ new single ‘Bad Dreams’ on Spotify and Apple Music now.

Three Must-Visit Locations For Your X-mas Break

The three-week Christmas holiday is the perfect time to take a mini vacation. Imogen Hawkes looks at the three best locations to visit.

Iceland - With its dramatic landscape filled with breathtaking waterfalls, rumbling volcanoes and crystalline lagoons, Iceland is a magical place to visit, no matter the time of year. However, like most places, it gets even better at Christmas. Iceland celebrates a humongous 26 days of Christmas, filling the land with festive markets, ice-skating and delicious food. Thanks to Iceland’s northerly location, you’re almost guaranteed to get a white Christmas. You’re also most likely going to see the enthralling Northern Lights.

London - Looking for a location that’s closer to home? Why not try London? Spend an hour or two ambling along the bustling Southbank to experience the eclectic pop-up Christmas markets. Head into Central London to be amazed by Selfridges’ biggest Christmas shop to date. Alternatively, stroll along Regent Street to admire the beautiful Christmas lights before sampling a hot chocolate from world-renowned chocolatier Läderach. Finally, head to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park to relive the childhood joys of Christmas rides, roast dinner wraps and ice skating. Are you brave enough to try Hollenblitz?

Maldives - A traditional Christmas isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, so why not escape the cold weather and fly to the Maldives? Forgo tradition in favour of a tan. No need to wrap up in blankets this Christmas, as temperatures in this tropical haven rarely fall below 27 degrees. Instead of sledging, try snorkelling, scuba diving or a plethora of other water sports that suit both the thrill seekers and the less adventurous. Top up your tan before settling down to fine food at a Christmas Eve gala dinner. The backdrop? Stunning sunsets and majestic palm trees.

The best Secret Santa gifts for your flatmates

For the one that is always cold

We all have (or are) that one friend who is always cold, no matter how high the heating is turned up. If you gift them a blanket hoodie, it is guaranteed that they will live in it from now on. Or if they always complain about cold hands, get them a pocket heater.

For the best cocktail maker

Christmas is around the corner, and to bring a little bit of festivity into the halls, lots of us will be doing Secret Santa. But what if you get assigned the one person you don’t know too well? Or what if you are not that great at gift-giving? Well, don’t worry, because we have some ideas for you that your friends will love! We’ve even made sure they’re less than your £10 budget.

For the coffee addict

Your friend always has a coffee first thing in the morning and then five more during the day? They might love you for a self-stirring coffee mug or a set of coffee syrups.

For the one that only eats pasta If your mate has pesto pasta ten times a week, they might benefit from a handy student food guide or a mini waffle maker – pssst, you might benefit from their waffle maker too…

If your mate is in charge of the cocktails at every flat party, you can pay homage to their skills by gifting them a cocktail shaker with recipes on it. Bonus points for you if you fill it with little spirits or sweets!

All of these gift ideas can be bought in town, so no need to worry about getting next-day-delivery!

Merry Christmas everyone!

How to do a successful Flat Roast

Christmas is here, and the one thing on every student’s mind is who is cooking the flat roast? It’s the ultimate send-off and the best way to get into the X-mas spirit. For freshers, the flat roast is a pivotal moment. You have finished your first term at university, so you are ready to head home for the winter break. For second years onwards, you are just happy to have a nutritious meal ahead of the Christmas workload. So, what makes a roast successful?

You cannot go wrong with a chicken/ vegan alternative, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puds, veg (namely broccoli, carrots, parsnips, cauliflower cheese - if you are fancy – and Brussels sprouts…) and, of course, gravy. To really get into the festivities, I would recommend taking a flat trip to the shops together. You will likely be picking up some drinks to go with it, and it really gets everyone into the spirit. The next

task is deciding who is cooking what. Luckily there are so many aspects to perfecting a roast dinner, so task distribution really is the key to success. For those concerned about making sure the dinner is all at the same heat (no one wants cold gravy on a hot chicken), be sure to read the cooking instructions for each item and calculate what needs to go in when! Whether you cook it to perfection or have a laugh messing it up, either way, you are still getting a nice home-cooked meal out of it. Best save the ‘who owes who what’ until the next day…

Happy cooking everyone!

P.S. it’s not a roast dinner if you don’t take a pic.

Nottingham Sports Personality of the Year

Think of this as our humble equivalent to BBC Sports Personality, but with more of an ‘ay up’ and a distinct whiff of mushy peas around the arena…

5th Place: Leigh Wood

Wood began the year with it all to lose, but has faced the challenges of being a champion superbly.

In a sell-out Motorpoint Arena bout in March, Gedling’s Wood produced a fabulous display to knock out Michael Conlan in the 12th round, retaining his WBA Featherweight title.

A title defence against Mauricio Lara was called off because of torn biceps, but Wood is healing and we’ll expect more in 2023.

4th Place: Stuart Broad

A staple of this (imaginary) award, Broad needs no introduction.

The 36-year-old was at his very best for England in 2022, with 29 wickets at an average of 27.17. He also chipped into Notts CCC’s promotion, including playing in the final game against Durham, where I got to shake his hand. He’s a very tall man.

3rd Place: Emily Campbell Bulwell’s own strongwoman Campbell has quickly become a national icon. After Olympic silver last year, Campbell claimed Commonwealth Games gold over the summer, followed up by another gold at the European Championships, both in the +87kg category. By heck, can she lift…

2nd Place: Joe Worrall, Ryan Yates and Brennan Johnson

Honestly, it’s impossible to separate these three Notts boys. They were all key cogs in a Nottingham Forest side that finally – finally! – won promotion from the Championship, and they’ve made the step up to Premier League life too.

They’re each treasured by the City Ground faithful, for whom it means loads to see local players amongst the elite once again.

WINNER: Mary Earps

The bedrock of England Women’s Euros victory over the summer, Earps is a welldeserved winner of our prize.

The West Bridgfordian – who came through with the Colts team there – was an everpresent in the Euros campaign, producing several wonder saves and keeping four clean sheets.

She’s also had a fine time of it with Manchester United, keeping clean sheets in their first five opening games of the WSL season.

A hero on the national stage, and a Nottingham icon too. Our Notts SPOTY for 2022 – Mary Earps!

The Big Freeze of 1962/63: Sporting impact

On paper, the 1962/63 football season would appear to be a fairly standard one. Stanley Matthews was Footballer of the Year, Jimmy Greaves was top goalscorer, and Everton became Football League champions.

For those who lived it, though, that season was unlike any other. Games right across the UK were postponed on a scale that wouldn’t otherwise be seen between WW2 and the COVID-19 pandemic, and I’ll tell you why. A bloody cold winter. It all began on December 22, 1962, when a cold snap arrived from continental Europe, bringing snow to most of the UK by Boxing Day. After that, conditions would become biblical. The average January temperature in Central England was -2.1°C and life was disrupted in all

conceivable ways. Thus, the ‘Big Freeze’ was born. There weren’t even snoods to keep footballers warm, either. When sport could take place, fortunes were mixed for the Nottingham clubs. Forest finally played their FA Cup Third Round tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers on January 29 and came out 4-3 victors, but Notts County’s only January match, away at Barnsley, ended in a 3-1 defeat.

These were the lucky ones. Mansfield Town, in the Fourth Division, had all their matches in January and February postponed. Further down the pyramid, the Central Alliance and Midlands Counties League were both impressively played to a conclusion by late May, with Arnold St Mary’s coming out on top in the former and Worksop Town runners-up in the latter.

There was one benefit to the Big Freeze, though. On Boxing Day 1962, Sunderland played Bury in the Second Division. A prolific Mackems striker who had scored 24 goals that season was inflicted with an injury on the day, no doubt worsened by a completely frozen pitch. Tearing his medial and cruciate ligaments, he’d never be the same and only played three more games in club football. That striker, who retired at the age of 27, was Brian Clough. Funny how things work out, isn’t it?

Fortunately, the Big Freeze was a once-in-alifetime occurrence. But how we could wonder how things would play out in such circumstances today…
