01 Dichroic Livingrooms of Broadway: City Hall’s Plug in Frontages Year: Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 Site: Tribeca, NYC Professors: Philip Lee, Lori Gibbs, Eliza Schrader Partner: Alara Eroldu (drawings produced collaboratively through an active exchange of digital files, paralleling the workflow used for physical models) PreFabricated Storefront and Street Renewal with ADA Solutions Thesis Research Question: To what extent does the civic core accommodate the intended functions of facilitating civic duties and enabling citizens to engage in the public realm?

The project seeks to redefine the essence of the public sphere within City Hall, transforming it into a dynamic hub that epitomizes the essence of civic engagement and inclusivity. Civic duties such as getting a marriage license, filling a complaint, and jury duty are all performed in this public realm. However, has the city articulated the importance of this public sphere effectively? By collapsing the distinct interior and exterior realms of Broadway street, we propose the bring the outside-in. Through the strategic installation of universally designed amenities, including benches, seating areas, public restrooms, water fountains, and charging stations, we seek to create inviting and accessible public resting spaces for residents and visitors alike. This is an approach to public design, blending high-end aesthetics with practical functionality and a commitment to inclusivity.

Our design methodology for the deployable prefab public amenity facilities revolves around a holistic approach that prioritizes inclusivity, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. Universally designed amenities such as public restrooms, water fountains, nursing pods, market spaces, quick-stop pharmacies, benches, seating areas, and charging stations are seamlessly integrated into the design, ensuring accessibility and convenience for all. Ramp access is incorporated throughout the facilities to ensure ease of use for individuals with mobility aids. By repurposing these vacant spaces, we can activate underutilized areas and transform them into vibrant hubs of activity and community engagement.

The body catalog features various body types representing different abilities and disabilities, illustrating their unique movement patterns and average travel distances.

Able-bodied individuals are shown with standard distances, while those using mobility aids have adjusted distances for wider pathways. Individuals with sensory sensitivities navigate shorter, quieter routes, and those with cognitive disabilities exhibit increased distances due to processing needs. This catalog emphasizes inclusivity, highlighting diverse interactions with the environment to inform accessible design.

Communal Housing A combination of concrete, wooden louver facade, storefront ground floor, and steel structure, amalgamating durability, aesthetic appeal, and structural stability. Concrete provides a solid foundation and structural support, while the wooden louvre facade adds texture and functionality, controlling sunlight and enhancing privacy. The building boasts three serene communal yoga/meditation rooms on the uppermost floor, distinguished by an innovative water roof. This tranquil space offers a serene ambiance, fostering mindfulness and relaxation. The water roof not only provides natural cooling but also enhances the meditative atmosphere with its reflective surface.

03 Micron Worker’s Housing Year: Fall 2023 Site: Brewerton, NY Professors: Deborah Gans Housing Micron Technology's $100 billion investment in a semiconductor plant in Clay, NY, promises to revolutionize the region's economy. With 9,000 direct jobs and an expected total of 50,000, Brewerton emerges as a key center. The demand for worker housing signals growth opportunities, positioning Brewerton as a vital hub in the emerging semiconductor industry. Prefab CLT units are sustainable, durable, and versatile building components made from crosslaminated timber. They are engineered off-site with precision, offering rapid assembly and customization options for various construction projects. CLT units contribute to energy efficiency and are an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional construction materials. The site located on a marshland, is unkept and the design aims to integrated the natural grassland into the housing complex. Elevating the building on piles is a practical solution for constructing on swampy or marshland-filled sites. Piles are driven deep into the ground to provide a stable foundation, mitigating risks associated with unstable soil and flooding. This approach minimizes environmental impact, improves drainage, and enhances adaptability to site conditions.
