OPTIMIZATION

RULER OF RAS AL KHAIMAH ATTENDS SIGNING CEREMONY OF AGREEMENT BETWEEN ETIHAD RAIL AND STEVIN ROCK His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, was present at the signing of an agreement between Etihad Rail, the developer of the UAE’s National Rail Network, and Ras Al Khaimah’s Stevin Rock, one of the largest quarrying companies in the world. Under the terms of the agreement, Etihad Rail will transport raw materials from Ras Al Khaimah to Abu Dhabi. This agreement is of considerable significance as the first in a series of commercial agreements for Stage Two of the UAE National Rail Network, which sees major organisations based in the UAE connected throughout the Emirates, via Etihad Rail’s highly anticipated national railway network, which stretches over 605 kilometres from Al Ghuwaifat on the UAE’s border with Saudi Arabia in the west to the port of Fujairah on the eastern coast. An estimated 3.5 million tonnes of construction material will be carried annually from Stevin Rock’s Al Ghail quarry in Ras Al Khaimah to Abu Dhabi, through 500 annual train trips. Each train will measure one kilometre in length, hauling 70 wagons that will have a carrying capacity of 7,000 tonnes per journey. The agreement will have significant environmental benefits, with an annual reduction of 100,000 truck trips. Etihad Rail began construction works on the Al Ghail facility, which is part of the freight facilities series the company is developing, in 2020 with the aim of providing transportation services from the quarries of Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah to the rest of the UAE.

Etihad Rail regularly holds meetings and seminars, communicating with companies in the construction materials industry, including quarrying companies in Al Ghail, Al Taween, Al Siji, Shuka, Masafi, and surrounding areas, to showcase the benefits of connecting Stage Two of the project with quarrying companies, which comes as a strategic step to transport limestone from its sources in the north of the nation to the emirates of Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Stevin Rock has been operating in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah since 1978, providing the highest quality materials and services to the construction, cement, steel, mining, glass and chemical industries in the GCC region and beyond. Through using the UAE’s National Rail Network to transport aggregate, Stevin Rock will enjoy enhanced operational efficiency, improved delivery, and an expanded regional supply chain, while reducing greatly the company’s carbon footprint..

GETS THE JOB DONE

DEMAG CC 3800-1 LIFTS HEAT RECOVERY STEAM GENERATORS IN THE UAE As part of a power plant expansion, one of the jobs for Al Faris was to install 16 double-wall heat recovery steam generators, which will be used to recover the gas power plant’s waste heat and improve its efficiency. The company used its own Demag CC 3800-1 lattice boom crawler crane as the main crane for the job. “After considering the load weights and the required performance characteristics, it became clear that only a crane in the 650 tonne class would be able to get the job done. And the reason we ended up deciding on the Demag CC 3800-1 was that it met every single requirement better than all other machines, not to mention that we’re very familiar with its high reliability and incredible capabilities,” said Hilary Pinto, Founder and Managing Director at Al Faris. It took a seven-person setup team made up of a crane operator, a supervisor, and five assembly technicians 20 hours to set up the crane with an SSL resp. SWSL configuration. “That really was a pretty amazing feat by our people. After all, the 66-meter-long boom couldn’t be assembled on the ground due to the SSL configuration and the limited space available, so they had to do it at height,” added Pinto. The project took a total of six months and consisted of transporting and setting up various power plant components, such as condensers, boilers, HRSG modules, generators, and tanks. To take care of this, Al Faris used a whole armada of special-purpose vehicles, including hydraulic trailers and various all-terrain and crawler cranes.

The heaviest and most challenging lifts by far involved the 28-meter-long heat recovery steam generators, which weighed up to 80 tonnes. These HRSG units had to be brought to a height of just under 60m at a radius of 40m so that they could be installed. To do this, the Al Faris team used an SWSL configuration with a 48m main boom, a 36m fly jib, a Superlift counterweight of 165 tonnes with a radius of eleven meters. For the 16 lifts, the Demag CC 3800-1 was assisted by a 250-tonne crawler crane from Al Faris’ fleet. The latter picked up the heat recovery steam generators from one end so that the CC 3800-1 would be able to bring them to a vertical position. After this, the 250-tonne crane “unhanded” the load so that the CC 3800-1 would be able to travel under load with the corresponding HRSG unit and place it into the desired position..

SPECIFIC EXPERTISE

MAMMOET DELIVERS TWO ONSHORE OIL RIGS FROM THE UAE TO OMAN Mammoet was contracted by Khimji Ramdas Shipping (KRS), to safely deliver two pre-assembled onshore oil rigs and accessories from a fabrication facility in the UAE to the site in Nimr, Oman. Manufactured in the UAE, these new generation fast moving rigs are a new addition to the current fleet of Oman’s largest drilling company - Abraj Energy Services SAOC. Shipping of oversized and heavy cargo requires specific expertise, as infrastructure limitations create bottlenecks that demand alternative transport approaches. At 37.7m long and 10.7m high and up to 471t, the sheer size and weight of the pieces meant Mammoet had to compose an optimal route for the cargo by performing the necessary route studies and obtaining required permits. Advanced preparations were needed, including road infrastructure modifications to temporarily replace over 100 streetlight poles and traffic signals, plus construction of temporary bridges protecting underground electrical cables and pipelines, to ensure transport safety and infrastructure integrity. The route also crossed the UAE’s most frequently used highway - E11 - connecting Abu Dhabi with Dubai.

Each rig comprised three major parts and three smaller parts, weighing 147t – 471t and the largest rig component measured up to 37.7m long x 13.5m wide x 10.6m high. They were jacked up onto beams and stools at the fabrication facility in Jebel Ali Free Zone, then transported to the Port of Jebel Ali using conventional trailers and trucks. The cargo was then loaded-out at the port onto a Mammoet 300 class barge for onward shipment to Oman, where it was received and loadedin at the Port of Duqm. From there, the rig sections were transported over a distance of 400km to the site in Nimr..

Hyva, in partnership with Alaa For Industries (AFI), has delivered 45 cranes in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Hyva HB 50 and HB 60 cranes which will be part of a fleet general cargo handling commercial vehicles throughout the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. AFI, Hyva’s partner in the region has multiple satellite service offices throughout the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and other branches in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar to support the after sales service throughout the region. The decision to buy Hyva cranes was based on their reputations of being a strong Hyva partner, a one-stop shop for quality hydraulic transport solutions with a full-fledged after sales support team to back the services throughout the region. Arno Raaijmakers, Sales Director Middle East at Hyva, said: “Together, since 1984, our successful partnership has built on our offering of an extensive range of crane configurations – every customer can choose the most appropriate crane for his specific needs – together with comprehensive after sales support.”

Raimondi Middle East assembled 11 topless tower cranes at Sharjah megaproject Aljada as part an ongoing relationship with UAE-based developer Arada. “We are delighted to further support Arada on this project by positioning six additional Raimondi MRT111 and five MRT159 flattop tower cranes onsite for the construction of East Village in Aljada,” said Wael Hasan, Commercial Director at Raimondi Cranes Middle East. “Chosen for the maximum lifting capacity of 8 and 10 tonnes respectively matched with excellent performance on jobsites of this nature, the cranes are also all fitted with the Raimondi Deluxe R16 crane cabin, and in terms of technology have the company’s latest iterations.” The MRT111s, currently at work with jib lengths ranging from 42 to 50 meters, are freestanding with a Height Under Hook (HUH) between 38.55 and 47.2m. The MRT111 remains one of Raimondi’s most popular models due to its versatility in tower height and its highperformance hoist speed and tip load. The Raimondi MRT159s, also freestanding with a HUH ranging between 31 and 47.2 meters, boast jib lengths going from 42 to 50 meters. One major boon of the MRT159 flattop is that it arrives onsite with all parts preassembled, ropes passed, and rope connections installed, facilitating easier onsite integration and installation. The cranes, positioned across three different plots on the large-scale development, will lift site materials as part of the development’s ongoing construction over the next year. Hasan confirmed that Raimondi has previously installed more than fifteen Raimondi tower cranes at Aljada..

Hyva’s HB series of articulated cranes are extremely versatile and easy to operate. With a maximum outreach of 11,90m and a maximum lifting capacity of 6,580kg, the HB60 model is the ideal solution for robust versatile applications. “This is a very important order. It is significant in size, and, most importantly, it recognizes the quality of the Hyva brand and the premium service reputation that our customers recognize between Hyva and AFI,” commented Mohammed Ali Al-Khayyat, General Manager at AFI..

Generally, in the Middle East, the most in-demand hydraulic excavator size is between the 20 tonne to the 50 tonne range. In recent enquiries, some regional countries are showing an increasing interest in the larger size 80-90 tonne class range as well. challenge it has also thrown light on how the workplaces of the future should be. Construction sites and underground mining projects now have new requirements. Different physical locations of the brand have adhered to respective government’s policies and regulations. Top priority for the company is the health and safety of employees, customers, partners and their families. Being an essential business that supports social infrastructure, Komatsu feels committed to ensure an ongoing supply of products, parts, services and solutions to customers that are continuing their operations, while taking precautions against the spread of Covid-19. What is clearly visible to the company is that the global Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the construction, heavy equipment and industrial sectors in a variety of ways. The most prominent findings for Komatsu have been how different customers’ jobsites need to be, their workstyles, and how communicating and engaging with stakeholders need to change. Since the job site today has different needs - no crowded or confined spaces or close interactions, Komatsu has seen a direct increase in the demand for machines capable of remote, automated and unmanned operations. Since last year, Komatsu has moved the workstyle to telecommuting for 90 percent of its employees at its headquarters in Japan and for over 50 percent of employees at indirect factory divisions during emergencies and lockdowns. Komatsu sees telecommuting as becoming a permanent part of its work process to create a highly productive hybrid work environment to facilitate operations during and after the pandemic.

COMPACT LEADER

With a number of new machine launches in the past 12 months – including the latest generation 100 horsepower R-Series B730 backhoe loader – Bobcat’s range of compact construction equipment has never been larger, says Gaby Rhayem, Bobcat’s Regional Director for the Middle East and Africa. 22

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - COVER STORY

B

obcat’s launch calendar has been extraordinarily busy over the past 12 months, including an all-new backhoe loader, rotary telehandlers and compaction equipment. In all, it has launched more than 48 new machines under the ‘Next is Now’ banner. Yet coupled with excitement around the new kit has been disappointment that customers and dealers haven’t been able to attend launches in person and get acquainted with the machines first hand. There have been widely viewed online launches, and customers have also been able to experience the machines through walk-around videos and video calls with dealers. But it’s seeing machines being put through their paces by skilled operators on a testing ground – such as the one at Bobcat’s site at Dobříš, in the Czech Republic – or getting hands-on and driving the machine themselves that can can give customers extra appreciation for a machine’s productivity, its nuances and key features. For Gaby Rhayem, Regional Director for Middle East and Africa at Doosan Bobcat EMEA, virtual events also lack the all-important personal elements that are part and parcel of business in the Middle East and Africa. Customers from these regions are also especially eager to see, touch and experience machines firsthand he says: “Here in the Middle East the overall relationship – talking about the weather, family, their work, and then talking about the machine – is especially important. Unfortunately, we have missed this in a year when we have completely changed our product line and launched so many products.” Best known for its skid steer loaders, telehandlers and mini-excavators, Bobcat has been on a mission to grow its range of compact equipment, to become a one-stop shop for contractors and municipalities. If there are gaps in the machines available, it can mean the brand misses out on business in a case where a customer wants to source all their machines in a single contract from one supplier. Meanwhile there are also cost benefits for contractors when using a large fleet of Bobcat machines, including cross-functionality of attachments across equipment including loaders, backhoes and telehandlers. Currently Bobcat has strong market share across key segments, such as skid steer and tracked loaders, mini excavators and telehandlers – proof that its machines are popular with fleet managers and operators alike. It enjoys particular success with its compact excavators, including the 3.7 tonne E37, which hits a sweet spot in terms of weight class requirements in the Middle East, says Rhayem.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - COVER STORY

When it comes to the new launches, the all-important machine for the Middle East and Africa is the backhoe loader. Bobcat first launched a range of BHLs in 2016, allowing it to contest the segment. Since then it has done quite well in terms of market share, says Rhayem, but he believes the new machine – the R-series B730, which replaces the first generation B700, B730 and B750 models – will prove even more popular. Headline features include a best-in-class Perkins 100 horsepower (74.6 kW) engine with a maximum torque of 408 Nm, manual or (optional) auto-shift transmission, and best-inclass reach and wide working areas at both the front and rear. There is also a new roomy 6-pillar cab with excellent all-round visibility with an enlarged rear sliding window and angled, flat-glass side windows. A new feature for the R-series BHL is that the operator can choose between ISO, SAE or Cross (X) backhoe controls, while the customer can build their preferred control pattern or change to pilot controls with a selectable control pattern. That was one piece of important feedback from customers from the first generation BHLs – that drivers want to be able to operate the machine with the control configuration they are most comfortable with, allowing them to achieve maximum productivity from day one, notes Rhayem. “Now we have a very beautiful new generation of backhoe loader it puts us ahead in terms of design and driver experience – we have one of the most spacious cabs,” he says. “And you can really feel the 100 horsepower engine – drivers say that it’s as if the machine has no limit, you can push and push it to the maximum.” Bobcat also launched a new generation of rotary telehandlers, with four machines for MEA (and other regions

24

with similar engine requirements), that have lifting heights from 18 to 25 m and lifting capacities from 4 to 6 tonnes. Often called 3-in-1 machines, rotary telehandlers combine the attributes of a telehandler with those of an aerial working platform and a crane, and are mainly used in construction and industrial maintenance. That multi-functionality means the rotary telehander range should be well-utilised in the region, says Rhayem. Another machine of note for the MEA markets is the L23, a small articulated loader. With a 25 horsepower engine, it’s ideal for applications requiring small machines such as municipal gardens, while it can use the same attachments as the S450 skid steer loader. Bobcat also launched new compact wheel loaders, but for now these will only be sold in higher emission standard markets in Europe. And the list goes on. In a new business area for the brand, Bobcat has also launched a comprehensive offering of light compaction tools. Developed in cooperation with the well-known Ammann Group, the range comprises seven different product families and will ultimately offer 37 models, from vibratory rammers weighing 29 kg up to 2.6 tonne tandem rollers. It includes two dual drum walk behind rollers, which can be used for compacting bituminous material but also for light earthwork and other compaction tasks, and which have an integrated water sprinkler system as standard and dual amplitude setting to switch between soil/gravel and asphalt/ bituminous compaction modes. Two trench rollers are on offer – one articulated and one skid-steered. There are also five articulated ride-on tandem rollers, from 1.2t up to 2.6t.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - COVER STORY

The light tool line-up includes six vibratory rammers (from 29 to 89 kg), with reduced vibration handle and a state-of-theart CAD calculated weight distribution; six different vibratory forward plates, ranging from 54 to 115 kg; 12 reversible vibratory plates, which operate with a twin-shaft system, enabling change of direction during compaction and a better compaction force; and four hydrostatic plates, weighing between 450 and 582 kg.

‘The confidence is back’ Reflecting on a turbulent 12 months for the business, Rhayem notes that the company was able to essentially maintain production continuously at its two main production facilities serving the EMEA markets, at Dobříš where it produces loaders and mini excavators, and Pontchâteau, in France, where it manufacturers telescopic loaders and handlers. Maintaining production at a time when others were idle, even allowed them to increase their market share in countries. In the Middle East they retained virtually their full time, while they are reinforcing its footprint in Africa, especially Central and Sub-Saharan Africa. They have also re-entered markets including Libya and Yemen.

Bobcat is looking to ramp up production of key models this year to meet demand.

While there was a collapse in demand associated with lockdowns in the second quarter of 2020, in the second half of last year they saw a strong pick up in key markets in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia, and acceleration of demand in many countries in Africa.

skid steers from 2008 selling for $8,000 – representing almost 40% of the price of the new machine, and a 2004 skid steer selling for $6,750. Meanwhile, comparable machines from competitors sold for less.

Now some countries in the Middle East are almost back to a normal situation, including the UAE, whereas some countries are still affected by Covid-19, such as Oman and Kuwait.

“It’s really amazing for machines that are 12-15 years old to be sold at this price. And it shows how Bobcat really has a very good reputation in the market. This is where we are very strong,” concludes Rhayem..

“Overall the situation in the Middle East is coming back to normal. Confidence is back. Business is back. We as a supplier are struggling now – logistics, including a lack of containers, rising steel prices – all of this has made things more difficult,” says Rhayem. Lead times have increased on popular models, but they are expecting to catch up with demand by June, with increased output from their factories. 2021 will be better than 2020 believes Rhayem – in part because of the requirement to complete projects connected with major events such as Expo 2020 in Dubai and the FIFA World Cup in Qatar meaning increased pace of work. “Overall we are on a positive trend from an industry point of view.” They have also completed big deals in Egypt with municipalities and governments, due to a push in the country to develop small towns around the country, something which requires a large amount of compact equipment. “In one deal alone we sold a significant number of mini excavators, on top of many skid steers and telehandlers, so Egypt has been the cherry on the cake.” Reflecting on the value of Bobcat, Rhayem says that the market recognition of the quality of their equipment is demonstrated by strong resale values. At a recent used equipment auction in Abu Dhabi, Rhayem witnessed Bobcat

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - TRUCKS

HIGH-TECH TRUCKS

New generation vehicles and an increased focus on transport and delivery solutions point to the future direction of the trucking industry.

26

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - TRUCKS

M

AN Truck and Bus has launched its new generation of TG trucks in the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, its largest launch in years, renewing a product cycle that began some 20 years ago when the first TG truck was released.

The TG range encompasses the TGX, TGS, TGM and TGL, with flexible configuration options to match the vehicle with the exact transport task. Engines are available in emission standards ranging from Euro 2 to 4, 5 and 6d, depending on the market (MAN is one of the few manufacturers still offering Euro 2). Headline advantages for fleet owners include improved fuel efficiency and enhanced durability, with a three-year warranty on the complete driveline on offer for the truck tractor models. The driver experience has also had a major overhaul, with a completely redesigned cab with two large digital displays, including the speedometer dashboard. The new trucks have already proven popular, including in Saudi Arabia where they will be built up by local partner Saudi Automotive Manufacturing Company (SAMCO); the

manufacturer had already received an order for 150 vehicles at the time of launch, revealed Jörg Mommertz, Senior Vice President, Head of Sales Area Middle East, Africa and Latin America (MEA&LA), speaking at the digital launch. Mommertz, who covers sales in around 70 countries, says the focus during design and development was to simplify business for customers. “We want to offer the customer and the drivers the best solution, and the initial feedback is just great. Drivers are absolutely happy – this is state-of-the-art design, the interiors the ergonomic features are great, and the trucks meet new EU crash norms and standards. The digitisation and connectivity are state of the art, and this is the best driver workplace I have seen in the last years.” Benefits of the new range for customers include greater efficiency and economy, with improved fuel efficiency, optimised up-time and a strong partner for customers via a dense service network, says Mommertz. The trucks have extended maintenance cycles – depending on market conditions – while MAN offers improved repair and maintenance contracts. Telematics can generate usagedependent service schedules.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - TRUCKS

“Combined with a repair and maintenance contract, we can guarantee the customer the lowest cost with the highest availability of the truck,” says Mommertz, who notes that for a customer in Europe, two days of unplanned downtime typically erases the entire profits for the month.

“And on the other hand, there is always a group of customers – like in the passenger car business – that want to be the first to get the newest technology and the newest product. They want to have the new-looking product, and it’s also good for image building – for them and for us.”

Mommertz says the majority of vehicles in the MEA&LA regions will likely be sold with automated gearboxes, a feature which improves driver performance and experience, reduces fuel consumption and wear, and even increases the payload, since the automated boxes are lighter.

While launch activities for the new generation have been disrupted by the ongoing pandemic, the bigger headache comes from the logistics and supply chain challenges roiling manufacturers in almost every industry. These include a shortage of semiconductors and shipping containers, with rising prices and constrained logistics capacity, notes Mommertz.

The move to automated is a clear trend, he says. “Even in markets where the qualification level of drivers [is lower], the fleet operator is able to reduce his downtime significantly because you don’t get problems with the clutch, life cycle reliability is much higher, and you have a more stable and a lower level of fuel consumption because the automated gearbox is doing the job better than an average driver.” The automated gearboxes available on MAN trucks sold in MEA are produced by ZF. The cabs of the new truck range have received enthusiastic reviews from drivers for increased comfort, safety, ergonomics and enhanced layout of controls. The digital dash display is complemented by a second large display with a wheel controller – perhaps a higher level of sophistication than many drivers in the region are used to but an important pillar of MAN’s efforts to improve the digital connections between trucks, drivers and fleet managers. As for adoption, Mommertz says there are different patterns. Some “conservative” customers at first don’t want anything new. “But my experience after 30 years is that once they touch the new product and have a positive experience, then they don’t want to step back to the old product.”

28

“We [in the industry] are all faced with the same problems. It’s not a serious problem yet, but it’s a challenge every day to optimise logistics.” Truck makers can expect material costs to continue to rise, but he believes that buyers should not expect any major price increases for new trucks in the future, apart from the regular pricing adjustments. Looking to the future, Mommertz says the pandemic has improved the image and standing of the global logistics and transport industry. “In some countries, there is a kind of stigma – nobody likes a truck on the highway. But last year logistics and transport and distribution got the image of being systemrelevant. That helps our customers and helps us to be seen in a positive way, as an industry.” “The truck industry is high-tech and the industry of our partners, logistic and transport, is high-tech as well,” he says. “We need digitisation in the truck to link it to our customers’ systems. This is the road map to the future and also to get prepared to for zero emissions and autonomous driving, or whatever the major trends are of the future. Therefore the new TG range is one milestone in our road map for the future.”

Demand for deliveries Marco Torta, IVECO Area Manager for Middle East & Gulf, based in Dubai, says the economic recovery is well underway across the MENA region, but tends to be strongest in the countries most successful in combating the coronavirus. “In markets where it has been contained, I see a recovery – definitely the market is improving.” Major markets for IVECO include the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Egypt. In Egypt, demand is improving, especially in the logistics and construction sectors. “The government is investing so the demand is growing,” says Torta. With growing emphasis on e-commerce and last mile logistics, IVECO has seen growing demand for its Daily in the light segment. While the market is dominated by Japanese OEMs, the Daily has more advanced specifications and a concept geared towards delivery in towns and urban areas. “We are seeing huge demand now in this segment, and plan to launch the Daily Hi-Matic, which has an automatic transmission and is specified for in-town deliveries. We are building our presence in this segment,” says Torta.

a 4x2 prime mover with mechanical suspension, a sleeper cab and high engine power (440hp), the top-seller in the heavy-duty range; the Trakker, for heavy-duty applications such as tippers or tanks; and in the medium-duty range, the Eurocargo, particularly popular for municipality applications. Another trend in the GCC is a focus on localisation, including truck drivers, especially in Oman and to a lesser degree Saudi Arabia. This raises the importance of driver training, typically offered with the delivery of new vehicles, notes Torta. The increasing use of automated gearboxes also makes things easier for drivers, he says. “Training is usually the responsibility of the companies, but definitely also the suppliers are supporting the customers, because safety and economy in driving the vehicle are essential.”.

The Daily is available in two main configurations: a van, used by courier and logistics companies, and a chassis cab, mainly used with a refrigerated box for food distribution. It has a gross vehicle weight of between 3.5-7 tonnes. From a total cost of ownership point of view, during five years of operation a customer will save significant amounts from lower fuel consumption and lower repair and maintenance costs, making it cheaper than the competition, says Torta. Other key models in IVECO’s range include the Performer,

aterpillar has one of the widest – if not the widest – power generator offerings in the market, with gensets of output from 7.5kVA all the way up to 7,150kVA (from the CAT C1.1 to the CAT 3616 engines). “We enjoy a large market share across all rating brackets and market segments, most specifically in those specialised projects with complex requirements and high power requirements between 1,600kVA to 4,000kVA,” says Mohamed B. El-Kaddour, Vice President – Energy and Transportation at Mohamed Abdulrahman Al-Bahar, the Caterpillar dealer for the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain. The Caterpillar generator sets supplied by Al-Bahar are used in a wide variety of sectors including public and civil services, manufacturing, construction, energy and utilities, and commercial services. “[Over the past 12 months] we have seen an increase in demand for segments like public and civil services, healthcare, data centres and oil exploration,” he says. Caterpillar offers gensets for different applications – continuous operation as base load for 24x7, prime power operation on variable loads for 24x7, and standby/emergency power, says El-Kaddour, and robust design allows them to run in harsh conditions. “Unmatched 24x7 service and aftermarket support enhanced by Customer Value Agreements (CVA) has been our hallmark, and is well acknowledged and valued by our customers,” he says.

Overall, high BMEP and SKVA permit better block loading capabilities and appropriate transient responses. The use of digital solutions like Cat Connect / Remote Asset Monitoring and other telematics systems also helps with condition monitoring and predictions of fleet performance, which in turn help avoid serious failures and reducing downtime, he notes. In addition, Caterpillar and Al-Bahar provide custom packages tailored to individual project specifications for customers in the region, such as ministries, national oil companies and commercial ventures. “These include, but are not restricted to, specialised alternators, batteries, enclosures, load banks, control panels, switch gears, enclosures and so forth. We have recently delivered such packages to ADNOC, KOC, DEWA and SEWA.” Caterpillar has recently released a new line of GC Series diesel generator sets for standby power solutions, with ratings of 331,100kVA. Notable for their compact footprint and emphasis on value, the machines feature a new Cat GCCP automatic mains failure control panel with 50 event log, standby option pack with smart water heater and timer control, and soundattenuating and weather-proof enclosures designed for maximum protection against harsh weather.

UAE-assembled Doosan Bobcat assembles its smaller range of Doosan Portable Power (DPP) gensets in the UAE and supplies them to MEA dealers. This has tax advantages for GCC buyers and helps make the smaller gensets more price-competitive. The range encompasses the G20, G30, G45 and G60 gensets, available in both 50Hz and 60Hz versions. The four gensets provide prime power outputs of 20, 30, 45 and 63kVA respectively, with all four available as open (XF) or sound-attenuated (XW) versions. The equivalent 60Hz versions are also available in a range of voltages between 220V

and 480V (phase to phase). They are powered by well-proven Yanmar diesel engines and covered by the best standard warranty on the market – two years and/or 4,000 hours on the complete powertrain. This genset range will also be renewed, with a new product coming to market towards the end of the year, says Gaby Rhayem, Regional Director for Middle East and Africa at Doosan Bobcat EMEA. The company’s larger 80-750kVA gensets are produced in Malaysia, giving DPP coverage from 20-750/800kVA. Topping the range is the G750, with prime output of 750kVA and standby output of 830kVA, powered by a Doosan DP222LC 12-cylinder engine. Sound-attenuated dimensions are 6,060mm x 2,440mm x 2,590mm (LHW). When it comes to critical applications – power at a hospital or factory, or other important infrastructure – buyers typically look to buy from established dealers with a good reputation for service and support, notes Rhayem. “Our dealers remain the destination of choice, service and reputation, especially for large projects – telecommunications, hospitals, malls, factories – where people are looking for after-market support.”

Local assembly in the UAE of Doosan Portable Power generators has tax advantages for GCC buyers.

32

In addition to gensets, Rhayem says the brand is set to introduce a new range of DPP lighting towers produced in India, giving them a very attractive price position. The brand also plans to introduce a new set of compressors within the next few months, also manufactured in India.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - GENERATORS

Engine supplier and genset maker FPT Industrial is well-known for its range of engines and is both a supplier to OEMs, and of built-up generators to some markets. Well-known OEMs include Himoinsa, Generac and Pramac, while local producers in the Middle East use FPT engines for generators and other products. “In FPT, we also have our genset range – open and soundproof – but we supply them only to markets that we do not have any OEMs, for example Iraq,” says Mohammad Nategh, Middle East Sales Area Manager at FPT Industrial. FPT provides solutions for prime power, continuous and standby, but recently demand has been growing for back-up and standby applications, and in the rental sector. Overall, demand in the MENA region has been growing in recent years, though this has been disrupted by the pandemic. Nevertheless, several markets continue to see growth. Egypt is a growing market, and besides power generation there is increasing demand for on-road natural gas engines, which FPT is a specialist in, as authorities push the use of CNG engines instead of diesel, says Nategh. The FPT engine range covers 30-600kVA outputs, with engines tested and suitable for ambient conditions in the Middle East and Africa. The company’s focus is on engineering and technology. “FPT designed a specific combustion chamber to reduce fuel consumption. Our engines have a longer service interval with respect to competitors. Our service interval averages 600 hours, whereas for many competitors it’s 500

hours. These two factors lead our customers to save money, and it also helps preserve the environment,” says Nategh. Another important feature is that the FPT engines are easily switchable between 50 and 60 hertz, according to local market requirements. The high-quality engine builds also reduce overall maintenance requirements. Added value services that benefit end users include threeor even five-year extended warranties, and telematic tools to allow customers to remotely monitor engine conditions, especially important when the gensets are on remote sites. “With the telematics tools, you can easily monitor the realtime condition of the engines from your home or office,” Nategh notes..

BULET TAKES DELIVERY OF THE FIRST LIEBHERR LRT 1090-2.1 ROUGH TERRAIN CRANE IN NIGERIA Construction contractor Bulet International Nigeria Ltd has taken delivery of a new Liebherr LRT 1090-2.1. This is the first Liebherr LRT series rough terrain crane in Nigeria. The high safety standards and VarioBase variable support base as well as Liebherr’s familiar good service were an important criteria behind the decision to buy the rough terrain crane for the company based in the capital Abuja. High safety levels in every respect are the main priority for the design of Liebherr’s new series of LRT cranes. They feature an outrigger monitoring system as standard. The outrigger status, on tyres or supports, is detected automatically and saved to the crane controller. The attachment of the ballast to the turntable and the installation of the optional double folding jib including its angle adjustment system are also recorded and monitored. The VarioBase variable support base developed by Liebherr, which is standard on LRT cranes, makes a major contribution to enhancing safety. VarioBase allows each individual crane outrigger to be extended to any length. The crane’s operations are protected by the LICCON controlled load moment limiter. This prevents accidents caused by human error during the assembly process and when hoisting loads. VarioBase also delivers greater flexibility on site – as a result of the increased lifting capacities when hoisting over the outriggers, the crane can hoist loads normally reserved for the next higher crane class.

The whole concept also impressed Bulet. “We needed a crane for our workforce which is safe and easy to operate and provides very good visibility from the crane cabin. Furthermore, VarioBase makes us more flexible on site, enabling us to complete hoists safely in constricted areas,” said Aliyu Isa, CEO at Bulet. Among other things, Bulet plans to use the LRT 1090-2.1 on its sites to help with tower crane assembly and for hoisting work for which pick & carry operations are required. The LRT cranes are powered by a Cummins diesel engine which develops 194 kW (264 bhp) and delivers a maximum torque of 990 Nm. A 6-speed powershift transmission from Dana and large 29.5 R 25 tyres guarantee the required off-road capability..

READY FOR WORK

While big OEMs dominate the machinery market, when it comes to attachments many smaller companies have compelling offerings for breakers, demolition equipment and augers.

44

AFRICA NEWS - ATTACHMENTS

T

he attachments market is one of the most competitive sectors in the machinery business, with in-house offerings from big-name original equipment manufacturers, attachment companies focused on niches in mining or demolition, and even small independent players. In the breakers market, South Korean companies have established a name for themselves with attractive tools that straddle the sweet spot between quality, durability and price. One of these is Bullstern, whose range includes vibro attachments such as vibro ripper and vibro hammer. Attributes include good build quality and features, serviceability and ease of operation, as well as enhanced productivity and uptime, says Kim Keunhyeok, Business Development Manager at Bullstern Attachment. “In the case of vibro attachments, durability should be the highest priority,” says Keunhyeok. “We can confidently say that we have an edge over our competitors in terms of durability. This confidence has been associated with many years of our innovation in manufacturing processes.” Commenting on productivity trends, Keunhyeok says one common mistake is users choosing an attachment based exclusively on their available excavator size, rather than based on what the ground or work conditions require. “In this case, it is highly likely that users will not get the results they want in terms of productivity, and it is likely to lead to disappointment in our product performance. For this reason, we first identify the conditions in which the equipment will be used, to provide the right attachments to the customers.”

In some markets, contractors are seeing increases in restrictions on the use of breakers in built-up areas. “The low noise breakers are already on the market, but they cannot be completely free from noise complaints either. As a substitute for the traditional hydraulic breakers, vibro ripper is emerging as an alternative and is expected to expand in the market further in the future.” DOWIN is a Korean manufacturer of hydraulic demolition equipment which has established its reputation by providing reliable products along with reasonable price and strong after-sales support, says Key H. Kim, Marketing Manager. Its product range includes breakers, vibrating hammer/pile driver and multi-processors: shears, pulverisers and crushers. For brakers, the DOWIN T and G series offers 20 models ranging from 1-70-tonne excavators, which are very powerful and productive thanks to the cylinder-embedded control valve system.

AFRICA NEWS - ATTACHMENTS

European manufacturers have a long history of building highquality attachments. Spanish firm Tabe Hammers was founded in 1968 and still retains its entire manufacturing process in Europe. Its characteristic product is the hydraulic hammer, with a unique round design and recognisable bright orange colour, which the company has been manufacturing since 1979, says Amaia Romero Rubio, Export Area Manager at Tabe Hammers. “Since 2007, our entire range of breakers (from 67kg to almost 8 tons) has been manufactured without through bolts. This makes their maintenance and repair easier and less expensive. The fact of being a smaller manufacturer makes the relationship with the dealer and customer very close and flexible; we can even adapt or customise the product for a specific client or job.” The type of work to be carried out and the weight of the machine are two fundamental variables when it comes to selecting the right tool, she notes. “Our range covers practically all the machines on the market, and we can adapt our products to any machine since we also design and manufacture the adaptor brackets.” When it comes to environmental concerns or regulatory requirements, such as dust suppression, noise, vibrations and on-site recycling of materials, Rubio notes that the firm’s products are manufactured in Europe under European regulations, which are among the most stringent – if not the most stringent.

46

“We always see how Europe is setting the trend, and sooner or later [these requirements] reach the other markets. These are trends that are here to stay, as is happening with recycling of materials. In the same way, safety regulations and noise limitations are becoming clearer. “The durability of Tabe products is something that makes our products more sustainable. In addition, at Tabe we work to reduce the consumption of our hammers while maintaining or even improving production. The market is increasingly demanding more sustainable, versatile and specialised products,” she says. Also with a long history, Indeco of Italy offers a large range of breakers, especially the mediumlarge hydraulic hammers suited to the larger excavators now more commonly in use in construction equipment markets in Africa and the Middle East. These include the HP 4000, an ideal match for 28-30-tonne excavators, with a 2,500kg weight and 150mm tool diameter; the HP 5000, suitable for 30-35-tonne excavators; and the HP 6000, a perfect match for 36-40-tonne excavators. Features of the range include a special intelligent hydraulic system, enabling the brakers to automatically vary the energy and frequency of blows according to the hardness of the material being demolished, thus improving productivity and enhancing the overall performance; a dual shockabsorption system; an anti-blank firing system; and

a fuel-saving hydraulic system, increasing performance and reducing excavator fuel consumption.

protected against shock fractures and replacement of worn teeth is simple.

The firm’s tools are suited to construction, demolition, quarry and mining, and even niche industries, with an overall focus on high reliability and productivity, says Michele Alessandro Vitulano, Global Sales & Marketing Manager at Indeco.

Ground conditions are perhaps the most important factor when selecting the right tool. With ground conditions from 50-70MPa it’s possible to use the standard auger, but when the ground hardness is in the range of 70-100MPa they shift the type of auger from a flat boring head to a more tapered one, to fracture it. Anything over 100MPa and the auger will still penetrate, but drilling will take longer and the wear on the drill can be significant. The engineering team at Auger Torque undertake FEA analysis to ensure the product can undertake the job in hand.

“In general, Indeco is well known for the quality of its product. We dedicate a lot of our time and resources to the R&D department. As we have expanded our range beyond hammers, we have dedicated the same attention to the other attachments – the pulverisers, steel sheers and grabbers. The concept is always the same – we choose the best material possible, we apply our expertise in design and in hydraulics, and we manufacture everything in Europe and the United States.” Auger Torque Group, part of the Kinshofer Group, manufacturers a wide range of attachments, for the earthmoving, construction, and agricultural industries. The company increased its presence in the Middle East in a more serious way in 2016, following on from initial early successes and requests from customers; stock is now held in Dubai, along with an office and dedicated business development manager. Growth has continued with demand for earth drills, drum cutters for trenching, hydraulic hammers, augers, and other tools. Their large range includes attachments for machines such as excavators, skid steers, backhoes and telehandlers. North Africa is also an important focus for Auger Torque, says Rohan Saldanha, International Business Development manager at Auger Torque - key markets include Egypt and Morocco. When it comes to drilling, their tools can be used to drill holes with diameters ranging from 100mm to 1.8m, and when it comes to depth the maximum achieved is around 18 metres. They have been used for a wide range of applications, including micro piling for foundations, dewatering, predrilling for sheet piling, high voltage pylon erection, palm tree plantation, street lighting and solar panel foundations. There are many advantages to the design of their augers including the development of anti abrasive flights and shallow pitch flights, which prevents spoil falling back into the hole as it is being drilled, something which is especially applicable for sand and light material. “You get much higher productivity with this design,” notes Saldanha. There is also the patented Auger Torque shock Lock tooth locking system, where auger teeth are safely locked in place and

“It’s all about the economics of how much time it would take you to drill the hole, and the amount of cost that you would have to spend in terms of the teeth and everything involved,” notes Saldanha. “But there are some cases where the customers have no choice – such as when consultants have barred the use of hammers due to sensitive infrastructure nearby.” Saldanha says they’ve developed a number of solutions to cater to demand in the AME region, including a specialized CFA system for drilling deep holes, especially when customers want to dig a deep hole using a thin auger matched with a smaller sized 20 tonne excavator. That solution is to offer an auger and extension kit with interchangeable connections, so that in the case of the extension being damaged the hex bar will likely break without damage to the auger, which can be quickly replaced and the extension reattached. They also use NM400 grade anti-abrasive steel, meaning that it will last 4-6 times longer. “This application has taken off really well. It lasts a lot longer and saves money for customers,” he says. “The question we always ask is, what can we bring into the market to improve the efficiency and enhance the technological awareness of our customers? What can we do to make our customers’ lives easier? It’s not only about selling a product.”.

Specialised attachments can be used to carry out important jobs on construction sites, saving time and money.

DIVERSIFIED GROWTH

Renault Trucks recently held a virtual press conference to talk about the past year, their performance, and how the company is also focusing its interest on refurbishing trucks and strengthening electromobility to align the company’s future to be in tune with environmental protection. Plant & Equipment brings you the details from the event. 52

ack in the days when the pandemic was not a part of our lives, Renault Trucks used to organize a multitude of events such as Experience Days for customers, prospects and partners to get a real look and feel of their trucks. Today, virtual is our reality, hence the French manufacturer organised an online official press conference to announce the company’s activities during the past year, its modus operandi during the pandemic, as well as how it actually fared in numbers. Cautious optimism is the attitude the company is adopting as the current situation moves into another year. A positive indicator is worth noting for 2020, in that Renault Trucks recorded a 12 percent increase in orders compared to 2019. Along with manufacturing and selling state-of-the-art, sturdy, value for money trucks, Renault is also investing time and money on refurbishing used trucks for which there is a very big market. Renaults trucks’ upcycling factory in Bourg-enBresse, France, transforms used trucks as per market demand. “This factory ran full speed in 2020, we transformed 500 used trucks. We have also launched new models like the T X-64 for Africa and the Middle East which is our contribution to compete with all the Chinese players there,” says Bruno Blin, President Renault Trucks. The company is also focused on making their entire offering electric, carbon neutral using fossil fuels in the next 30 years.

Europe market The region that was the best in terms of numbers for Renault last year was Europe. Initially during the early days of the pandemic, Renault complied with the orders of the French government and closed four of its plants in France on March 18, 2020; work resumed a month later on April 23. There was a definite decline in business, however it was in accordance with global transportation numbers; for Renault it was a reduction by 24 percent to 41,117 vehicles.

2020-2021 Invoicing Breakdown: Breakdown of invoicing per destination - Europe (excluding France): 19,019 vehicles invoiced - France: 17,937 vehicles invoiced - Rest of the world: 4,161 vehicles invoiced Breakdown of invoicing per tonnage - Heavy and mid-range vehicles: 26,246 vehicles invoiced - Light-duty vehicles: 14,871 vehicles invoiced

GLOBAL NEWS - PROFILE

Renault maintained a clear leadership in France with a market share of 28.3 percent, up by 0.6 percent. In the Eastern European countries such as Hungary and Romania, spare parts volumes decreased by 13 percent - again consistent with the drastic decrease of the transport situation - so the company offered a predictive maintenance option to its clients in this region (not available everywhere in Europe) that 2021 new components would be added to their purchases and a remote software updating service would also be included in the package. “We are working very hard to bring serenity to our customers,” says Blin.

International market Truck deliveries in the international market increased by 16 percent with more than 4,000 trucks delivered in Algeria. “We have seen a recovery with 1,100 trucks invoiced representing an increase of 80 percent as compared to 2019. Unfortunately, 2021 remains very uncertain in Algeria because of the ongoing change in its import regulations,” added Blin. In Guinea in Sub-Saharan Africa, Renault performed well as well as in Senegal. Here Renault offers a dedicated range of used vehicles (Renault Trucks T X-Port and T X-64, converted at the Used Trucks Factory). Renault Trucks also sells a special extra-safe edition of its K range on these markets, the Renault Trucks K Safety Edition. Renault saw a strong increase of deliveries in Turkey with more than 1,000 vehicles in 2020, which is a 66 percent increase in what is a very fast-growing market. In Saudi Arabia and Egypt, Renault performed the best in 2020 as compared to the other countries in the Middle East.

Fossil free transportation One of the manufacturer’s top priority is to develop products and solutions that reduce their CO2 footprint in order to be in line with the Paris agreement. The company plans to be carbon neutral at the latest by 2050. “Our trucks last around 10 years,

54

which means from 2040 we need to ship 100 percent of our trucks as fossil free,” he adds. The share of the combustion engine will decrease progressively, but market share is poised to remain on combustion engines for specific and highly demanding applications. The company sees two different technologies when it comes to energy storage in electric vehicles - batteries and fuel cells. “We don’t know exactly what will be the mix between those two technologies but we believe that both technologies will play a major role in the future so transformation has already started at Renault trucks.” Transport luminaries have come together to form an organisation to be mutually beneficial in terms of future technology called Volvo Energy. This new entity has the responsibility to provide an optimized usage of battery and charging solutions for all the partners in this organisation. Daimler in a joint venture will develop and produce commercialized fuel cells. Renault has also built a strategic alliance with Samsung that will cover the development of battery packs. Renault is already leading in the production of medium duty electric trucks which are being used by customers in the distribution, waste collection and recycling segments. The French manufacturer continues to roll out electrification of its brands in all relevant segments to cover the entire market one step at a time. Electric vehicles are a key cornerstone of Renault’s strategy. The company is aiming for 10 percent of all total volume produced by 2025 to be electric trucks and 35 percent by 2030. The company is setting up a new commercial organization dedicated to electric mobility in order to accelerate and support their customers in their energy transition. “We are investing €33 million in Lyon for an R&D center called X Tech Arena. This new building will host engineers who will work on the technical solution for the future,” concludes Blin..

LATEST EVOLUTION

NEW CAB AND ENGINE FOR LARGEST HYSTER BIG TRUCKS The new Hyster ReachStacker cabin includes a dual digital display with load weight and load moment information, as well as boom geometry, as standard. This helps support operators with suggested actions for maintaining stability and reducing load-centre.

Hyster has launched the next evolution in its range of Container Handlers and 18+ tonnes capacity Lift Trucks, featuring new state of the art cabs and controls and Stage V compliant diesel engines. The latest evolution to the Hyster Big Trucks range also sets new industry standards for operator cabins. The new cockpit-style cab across the Hyster 18 - 48 tonne lift truck series positions all truck information and controls at the driver’s fingertips. To support accurate and efficient handling, Hyster Empty Container Handler drivers also benefit from a user-friendly digital performance 7” display. An optional second graphic display can also clearly show the status of spreader engagement and whether the container has a positive lock or not, as well as any limitations the operator should be aware of. This may speed up operations and reduce ‘mispicks’, enhancing productivity even in heavy-duty applications.

For emissions regulated markets, the new Stage V engines will be introduced gradually, with Hyster Empty Container Handlers and Hyster RS46 ReachStackers among the first models to benefit, featuring either a 7.7 or 10.7 litre engine. The Stage V Hyster trucks also incorporate smart monitoring and service to optimise uptime in demanding applications. To accommodate extreme duty applications, the transmission cooling capacity of the updated Empty Container Handlers and 18-32-tonne heavy duty forklifts has been increased significantly. The trucks also feature a hydraulically driven fan that helps reduce fuel consumption and noise levels. Reversing fans can be supplied by the Hyster Special Engineering Team if required. The new truck engines will use a combination of a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and DEF like AdBlue and a Diesel Particle Filter (DPF). Both after-treatment units are packed in one box positioned on the outside of the truck providing easy access and heat rejection. The ash cleaning interval is approximately 4500 hours depending on the application. The engines are equipped with cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), which minimises the creation of NOx, resulting in less AdBlue usage..

HIGH TRACTION

CONTINENTAL EXPANDS GENERAL TIRE PORTFOLIO FOR EARTHMOVING INDUSTRY the portfolio now includes a total of 14 sizes, which are used on wheel loaders and dozers as well as on dump trucks and scrapers.

Continental is expanding its General Tire portfolio for the earthmoving industry with the General TE95 tire. The tire impresses with high traction, especially for soil compaction work in road and construction applications, and, like the entire product line, is equipped with V.ply technology. With this expansion, the General Tire tire portfolio grows to a total of 18 tire specifications for the earthmoving industry. The first General Tire earthmoving tires were launched in early 2020 -

The optimized tire contour of the General TE95 ensures even pressure distribution on construction vehicles such as single-drum compactors. This keeps construction site soils smooth during compaction. However, sandy, muddy or stony soils can be a challenge for construction vehicles. That’s why the General TE95’s geometric, robust tread blocks provide continuous traction performance in a variety of soil conditions. As with all General Tire EM tires, V.ply construction technology ensures strong sidewalls on the TE95, providing optimal protection against punctures and cuts. All tire lines benefit from the innovative V.ply technology. The V.ply technology combines the advantages of cross-ply tires and radial tires, by integrating a weave pattern of different strands laid out at special angles. Since steel cord does not provide an optimal bond between the carcass and the rubber casing, V.ply technology uses a high-strength polymer..

LIGHT AND MANOEUVRABLE

BOMAG EXPANDS LIGHT EQUIPMENT performance. This makes the rollers a reliable partner for a wide range of applications. Thanks to the machine’s minimal lateral overhang, the operator can compact quickly and precisely right up to the edge.

Bomag is launching two new walk-behind rollers: The BW 65 and BW 65 D. The new Bomag BW 65 and BW 65 D walkbehind rollers are now equipped with an electric starter as standard. Their close drum spacing furthermore ensures that they are particularly light and manoeuvrable in use. All operating points are easily within the user’s reach. The rollers are available as petrol models with Stage V/ CARB Phase 3 emission stage or diesel models with Stage V. The switchable vibration system can be adapted flexibly to various surfaces, base layers and thin asphalt layers with two amplitudes and delivers excellent, high compaction

The standard operating hours counter leads to significant maintenance cost savings. With reliable information on the total operating time, users now know exactly when maintenance is due and needn’t carry it out any sooner than necessary, e.g. changing the exciter oil. This cuts costs and increases the machine’s service life while protecting the environment at the same time. The high transport speed for travel to and from the construction site is also worth mentioning: At up to 6 km/h, construction sites can now be reached even more efficiently. The well-thought-out machine concept also enables quick and clean maintenance, e.g. through the spray pipe with quick release coupling or four lateral openings for scraper cleaning. Bomag’s new walk-behind vibratory rollers also have a lot to offer in terms of work safety. Particularly noteworthy are the reversing protection and the second parking brake for stability on slopes. The clever exhaust routing away from the operator and building walls ensures the lowest possible emission levels. The optional warning light provides a further plus in terms of safety on the construction site..

OPTIMISING

KLEEMAN LAUNCHES THE MOBICAT MC 110(i) EVO2 With the market launch of the new MOBICAT MC 110(i) EVO2, Kleemann presents a mobile jaw crushing plant of the new generation. The further development of the tried and tested predecessor plant offers users groundbreaking technologies for optimising all areas of a typical workday. With an hourly output of up to 400 t/h, the new mobile jaw crusher meets the requirements in the medium output range. It delivers an impressive performance in a wide variety of quarry and recycling application, where the emphasis is on effective coarse crushing. A special highlight of the MOBICAT MC 110(i) EVO2 is a new effective two-stage overload system. It effectively prevents blockages and material bridging that can lead to unwanted downtimes. If uncrushable material enters the crushing process, the CSS opens 2x faster than with the predecessor plant or, as an option, even up to 40x faster. This increases the availability and thus the overall output. In the new MOBICAT MC 110(i) EVO2, Kleemann has integrated a series of new technologies and improvements. The CFS - Continuous Feed System guarantees a continuous

crusher feed and thus a daily output of up to 10% more. The independent double-deck pre-screen effectively separates fines before they reach the crushing process. This increases the total plant throughput and is gentle, for example, on downstream cone crushers in the second crushing stage. Improved feed behaviour is guaranteed on the one hand by the extra-long articulated crusher jaw, whereas a flattened transition to the crushing chamber makes an optimum material flow possible. The accessibility for fast, safe and convenient maintenance has also been optimised..

M

etso Outotec, a global equipment manufacturer and service provider for the mining, aggregates and metals industries, recently launched two mobile crushing and screening products - The Nordtrack S2.5 mobile screen and the Nordtrack I908 mobile impact crusher - through their new, slick digital event platform called Metso Outotec Liveroom. In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, the company found the virtual Liveroom event to be the best way for them to reach all their stakeholders with as much information as they had and with product experts on standby to answer all the questions. “The pandemic pushed us into this direction,” says Vesa Tuloisela, Head of the Nordtrack Product Offering at Metso Outotec. “Since we cannot meet customers or join exhibitions as we used to, this innovative idea of the virtual Liveroom helps us meet our customers and answer all their questions.” The Nordtrack range was first introduced in the end of 2019, with volume sales starting in early 2020. However, despite the real decrease in demand and volumes for construction equipment globally, the Nordtrack range has been quite well received. Says Tuloisela: “Nordtrack sales have been developing very well despite the pandemic.” The technology behind the products is what is drawing the industry to the

products coupled with positive customer feedback and an active and responsive after sales system. Despite that, over 200 units of various products from its range were delivered in the first year. “Our biggest markets are Europe and North America,” continues Tuloisela. In Europe, deliveries have been made to 15 different countries, Germany being the bright spot with over 50 units in total sent there. In several of the American states as well as in Canada, Metso Outotec have had lots of success with clients renting the equipment only to eventually buy the products to be a permanent part of equipment collection. In terms of global sales, the company is about to deliver one of the first units to Central and South America in Chile and Peru. South Africa has been enjoying the products for over a year already with multiple deliveries and sales. Markets in Australia, New Zealand, Russia and Kazakhstan have also been using the products for a year. Listening to customer feedback has been key in the development of the new products launched - the Nordtrack S2.5 mobile screen and the Nordtrack I908 mobile impact crusher. With these new additions, the Nordtrack range now includes 21 products in total, including jaw crushers, impact

crushers, screens and conveyors, designed for contractors and small quarrying applications especially.

Nordtrack S2.5 The Nordtrack S2.5 mobile screen is a small, versatile, scalping screen designed for small job sites and a variety of applications. With a compact and light-weight structure, a highly efficient two-deck screen, and a wide selection of different screening media. It can be used as a pre-scalper or a tertiary screener for up to 450 tph capacity process. The compact design and robust chassis make it cost-effective for contracting jobs where site locations change frequently. This mobile screen is compact in size and has an attractive price point for those applications where the separation needs to be done quickly and cost efficiently. It weighs 23 tonnes, is extremely portable when being moved to a site or moving around a tight job site, noise levels are low, and it can accept high volumes of materials. The unit handles the material with confidence plus the unit can be used in many different ways - the screen can be changed for the final feed like for gravel or bigger boulders or concrete. Screening is available in many dimensions and the unit can work on topsoil, aggregates, concrete. Its versatility makes it a good choice for construction contractors with frequent changes in site locations or simply as a rental unit.

Nordtrack I908 The second new addition to the range is the Nordtrack I908 mobile impact crusher. Its design is optimized for the smallersized material reduction job sites, and it accepts different kinds of feed material – from asphalt recycling to concrete crushing, as well as traditional rock crushing. The same base model with an integrated screen on the chassis, the Nordtrack I908S, was introduced earlier, and it has been one of the best-selling Nordtrack units especially in Europe. The Nordtrack I908 is for smaller job sites where quick performance is valued. The unit is controlled from the user-friendly automation panel; this compact unit provides extremely efficient throughput. The unit comes with a wide variety of different impact hammers for many applications from martensitic hammers recommended for concrete crushing to chromium iron hammers for reclaimed asphalt crushing. Clutch-driven direct drive system provides highly efficient

Nordtrack I908

fuel consumption to crushing ratio and compact design saves on transportation costs. It has a strong magnet that pulls out any scrap iron or concrete rebars from the material absorbed. This unit also weighs 23 tonnes hence is very cost effective to transport on standard trailers. The setup time is quick and the unit can move around in tight spaces because of its size and the noise levels are low due to its small size. A water spray tackles the dust.

Product versatility The Nordtrack S2.5 mobile screen and the Nordtrack I908 mobile impact crusher are an extremely good solution for entry level entrepreneurs looking to enter the crushing and screening market or as a rental offering for a few weeks depending on specific project requirements or for general contractors in the construction industry. This shows that these multi-purpose units can be used in numerous ways and can work with different applications. The units provide a balance between cost and productivity and are designed for recycling, demolition, and small-scale aggregate operations. Sustainability is continuously proving to be a growing megatrend globally. Governments are pushing for ways to tackle emission levels and improve their green footprint. Currently, the use of recycling aggregates is big in Europe and the United States and the rest of the world is bound to follow soon. Using unwanted concrete bricks, tiles and other demolition waste instead of blasting natural, excavated rocks is clearly cheaper as well as a greener solution..

LIEBHERR LAUNCHES THE R 9600 After years of development, the Mining Division of the Liebherr Group launched the new R 9600 hydraulic excavator. This 600t excavator sets new standards in the open pit mining market.

68

T

he successor of the popular R 996B enters the market after gaining a year of field experience in Australia, the largest market for 600-tonne class excavators. This new development builds on years of customer-centric research and is based upon the successful R 9800 800-tonne excavator. A total of 8 units will be operating in Australia by end of 2021. The R 9600 will enter serial production at the end of this year.

regulations, the SCR system reduces nitrogen oxides by injecting a liquid reductant into the exhaust stream. An electric drive version will be available soon, a productive choice for mine sites having the required electrical infrastructure.

Weight-optimized attachment The R 9600 attachment makes use of smart component design such as the patented “EVO” backhoe bucket, hydraulic cylinders, shift levers, bucket links and attachment pins. The result is an increased overall production rate without compromising component lifetime.

The R 9600 is equipped with two QSK50 Cummins engines with advanced combustion technologies. Understanding that fuel costs form the major portion of the TCO for mining machines, Liebherr has developed and implemented LPE solutions (Liebherr Power Efficiency). These proprietary management systems for the engine and hydraulic system controls substancially reduce fuel consumption without compromising the overall productivity of the machine. These new features grant also an additional step toward the Liebherr emission reduction solutions.

In standard backhoe configuration with a Heavy Duty wear package, the R 9600 comes with a 37.5m3 / 49.1yd3 bucket to deliver an ideal truck/shovel match with Liebherr mining trucks. It loads 190t trucks in 3 passes, T 264 240t trucks in 4 passes, T 274 300t trucks in 5 passes and T 284 375t trucks in 6 passes.

For emission regulated regions, a US EPA Tier 4f / EU Stage V compliant version is available with the latest SCR aftertreatment technology. Complying with stringent emission

The excavator is also available in face shovel configuration equipped with a 37.0m3 / 48.4yd3 shovel, as standard with a Heavy Duty wear package.

The latest cabin generation The R 9600 has a brand-new cabin designed by operators for operators – it is a first-class, state of the art 14m3 / 150ft3 working space. The cab design reduces vibrations and limits noise to 69 dB, providing a comfortable working environment for the operator. To allow for the best possible working conditions, Liebherr engineers have placed the cab of the R 996 successor back on the left side, standardising with other excavators in the range. The operator’s seat has been positioned as far left as possible in order to provide the best operator visibility of the attachment and working area. Ambient and low-level LEDlights make working at night easier and safer. The operator station is user-friendly and equipped with modern touch screen displays. The air conditioning system for the cabin is a modular design concept which is easily exchanged as a rotable component, as single or dual air conditioning systems are available. To further enhance the operator comfort, vacuum cleaner, premium cooled seats, HEPA filtration system and much more features are available. The R 9600 offers a superior machine perimeter visibility system comprising of four cameras at strategic locations on the rotating uppercarriage. The dedicated monitor inside the cabin provides continuous 270° vision around the machine.

Assistance Systems and on-board controls Setting new standards in the mining industry, the R 9600 is equipped with the Liebherr Assistance Systems. These advanced on-board applications are designed to support the operators in becoming more efficient through analytics and actionable insights from live data. The Truck Loading Assistant helps the operator attain optimal productivity and efficiency. With 99% measurement accuracy, the system measures the instantaneous bucket payload and provides real-time information to the operator. The Truck

70

Loading Assistant strategizes the number of passes required to achieve the target payload of the truck, and also provides a progressive update in achieving the strategy. In addition, to provide operators and customers with productivity KPIs of the machine performance, the severity of the application and the operational conformance of the machine is realized in real-time on the machine. The first Liebherr hydraulic excavator (HEX) Automation Product introduced to the Mining Industry is the Bucket Filling Assistant, an adaptive or semi-autonomous digging product which is available as an option for the backhoe version of machines. It allows for easier and faster bucket filling with a consistent bucket fill factor, load after load even in the toughest digging conditions. As a result the overall productivity improves while the operator’s fatigue level is reduced.

Designed for safe 24/7 operation and maintenance Liebherr product development is centered around protecting the customer’s most important assets. The R 9600 was designed with respect to global safety standards for operators and maintenance personnel, ensuring that safety remains a top priority at all times. The uppercarriage of the R 9600 has been designed to allow for quick and easy maintenance activities, and is accessible via a hydraulically controlled ergonomic 45° stairway. Enlarged walkways with handrails and non-slip perforated steps allow for safe and convenient inspections and maintenance at all levels of the machine, including engine and powertrain components. All major parts have been designed and positioned to allow easy access and quicker maintenance. The central service flap provides fluid and lubricant access to all components and systems, which reduces potential downtimes. Component and system refill and drain points of the R 9600 are accessible from ground level with quick couplings and depressurizing valves..
