Dear Friends,
This past June, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and removed the federal right to abortion. With individual states empowered to regulate abortion, bans quickly went into effect.
I am so proud of all that we have done to meet the urgency of this moment while never losing sight of the importance of patient-centered care. In the year ahead, we will continue to provide safe, comfortable spaces for our patients to receive compassionate health services and care. PPLA will focus on expanding abortion access; advancing

health equity by providing layered and intentional services to communities facing health disparities; serving even more patients through the 50+ health center sites we operate, and expanding the reach of our education efforts.
Most of all, we strive to treat all who walk through our doors with dignity and respect — no matter what. Thank you for your steadfast support. Together, we will continue to provide care with empathy, understanding, determination, and purpose.

Fellow Supporters,
On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for standing with us in support of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles. We all know that reproductive health care is in a period of unprecedented challenge. As we write this letter, 14 states have enacted total or near-total abortion bans. As Co-Chairs of the PPLA Board, we are honored to work alongside President and CEO Sue Dunlap and the entire staff to ensure PPLA will be here to meet the needs of those who entrust us with their health care, whether they reside within Los Angeles County or have traveled hundreds of miles to reach us.

GROWING: PPLA now has 24 health centers providing comprehensive reproductive and sexual health care across LA County — with new centers opened in Inglewood, Huntington Park and Koreatown in 2022.
CARE FOR TEENS: In addition, PPLA operates Wellbeing Centers on 28 high school campuses and provides care at 2 other high school clinics in LA County. These centers remove barriers to care for teens by providing essential reproductive and sexual health care in a safe and convenient space.
TELEHEALTH: Telehealth increases the convenience and availability of clinical services and helps patients overcome barriers to care. Over the last fiscal year, PPLA provided over 6,443 telehealth visits to our patients.
TRAINING FUTURE PROVIDERS: It is critical that the next generation of providers be trained on comprehensive reproductive and sexual health care. PPLA partners with Cedars-Sinai, UCLA, Adventist White Memorial, USC, UCSF, Long Beach Memorial, Pomona Valley Hospital, Kaiser Permanente, and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to train residents, fellows, and students in the delivery of essential care.
Spotlight on Abortion Access
In the first 100 days after the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe, 14 states banned abortion access and 26 clinics closed across the country. Many pregnant people are now forced to seek abortion care across state lines. As part of PPLA’s response to this need, we have hired patient navigators, legal experts, and a Vice President of Abortion Access who are all working together to ensure patients coming to PPLA from out of state get the care they need.
“At a time when women’s rights are under attack, we must do everything we can at every level of government to support and protect Planned Parenthood — a vital organization to the health and wellness of women. As a former health care professional, I know how important safe, accessible, affordable reproductive healthcare is, especially in low income communities. Thank you to Planned Parenthood for saving lives across the country.”

Spotlight on Wellbeing Centers
To overcome barriers to care and address health disparities amongst adolescents in LA County, PPLA is providing reproductive and sexual health care for teens through PPLA-staffed Wellbeing Centers on 28 high school campuses and 2 other high school clinics. Wellbeing Centers’ convenient location ensure that teens can easily get the care they need without judgment or stigma. Last year 1,400 students received care through 2,600 patient visits.
Additionally, PPLA recognizes that reproductive and sexual health is closely tied to behavioral health. This year we launched behavioral health services tailored to youth. PPLA is leveraging our presence at Wellbeing Centers to support the social and emotional wellbeing of students through education, outreach, and the provision of care.
“We are inspired by the amazing students, teachers, staff, and administrators leading efforts to champion student well-being on high school campuses. This collaboration would not be possible without the generosity of Planned Parenthood of LA and the support from the LA County Office of Education, LA Unified School District, local school districts, and the school team at the Department of Public Health.”
DR. BARBARA FERRER, LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH
Spotlight on Promotoras
This year marked the 30th anniversary of PPLA’s Promotoras Comunitarias Program! Promotoras are Latinx women from the community who provide information, offer support, and facilitate access to resources and services for family, friends, and community. PPLA Promotoras address sexuality, violence prevention,
reproductive health, personal development, and well-being through educational workshops.
Over the last three decades, this program has served hundreds of thousands of Angelenos, providing quality education on a range of topics, in a variety of venues.
“Women’s reproductive rights are immigrant rights. We partner with Planned Parenthood to advance the rights of immigrant women, independent of immigration status, to have access to healthcare, including reproductive healthcare. Our partnership educates, organizes and empowers our community.“
ANGÉLICA SALAS, THE COALITION FOR HUMANE IMMIGRANT RIGHTS (CHIRLA)
SUPPORTING TEENS: As the pressures of the pandemic lingered when teens returned to school last year, they needed support like never before.
PPLA’s Peer Advocates reached 11,182 students with vital information about reproductive, sexual, and behavorial health. PPLA educators trained 320 teachers and 165 youth-serving professionals to provide accurate, nonjudgmental education to teens.
TEEN CALL LINE: PPLA’s Teen Call Line received 4,858 calls last year, assisting teens with scheduling appointments and answering questions about sexual health, behavorial health, and/or substance abuse. Teens benefit from having a confidential and friendly phone line to ask questions or share information that’s hard to discuss with others.
COVID-19: At the request of the LA County Department of Public Health, PPLA increased our COVID-19 vaccine education and outreach efforts to combat the surge in illness caused by the Delta variant. PPLA Promotoras provided individual phone education classes to hundreds of community members. Our Youth Education team helped train student Public Health Ambassadors in an effort to raise awareness about the importance of getting vaccinated.

Spotlight on Black Health Initiative
Thanks to the vision and dedication of Black leaders at PPLA, we have operationalized culturally specific work in critical areas of sexual health, prenatal care, behavioral health, and wellbeing. These focus areas are informed by lived experience, professional expertise, community partnerships, and public health data, and research. Black communities in Los Angeles County experience significant reproductive and sexual health disparities, and PPLA selected Inglewood as the flagship site for the Black Health Initiative through reviewing the unmet needs and opportunities in the area and surrounding communities.
To complement these clinical services in Inglewood, we also added a community center adjacent to the clinic, home to a Community Health Worker and Case Manager that provide wrap-around support to patients. In addition, Black Health Initiative educators have reached over 3,000 people through outreach, partnership, and education efforts. These efforts include innovative health education work with youth and young adults who are most impacted by racism and discrimination.
Currently, at the Community Center individuals can access free legal services for areas of life that may also impact their overall health, such as housing rights, government benefits,
expungements, and family law, from Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) and the UCLA Law Center on Reproductive Health, Law, and Policy. Through continued partnerships like these, the Black Health Initiative aims to break down barriers and empower individuals to advocate for their health and wellbeing.
“Black Women for Wellness is a strong believer in developing relationships before you need them. Our work centers Black women, utilizing a reproductive justice and human rights framework. Planned Parenthood Los Angeles is a longtime partner, strong ally and friend in our work. Both PPLA and BWW have put in the hard work of building and nourishing this relationship toward equity, access and dignity in seeking health services. PPLA has opened Inglewood Health Centers, shared ideas, victories and challenges, contributed funding support and importantly too the moral support when needed. BWW appreciates the partnership, being allies and the strength that comes with our work together.”
JAN ROBINSON FLINT, BLACK WOMEN FOR WELLNESS (BWW)
In anticipation of the Supreme Court’s ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a motion by Supervisors Holly Mitchell and Sheila Kuehl in January 2022 to help ensure access to quality reproductive health services and abortion in LA County. Since then, PPLA and other non-profit, academic, and community partners have worked together to develop the Los Angeles County Abortion Access Safe Haven Pilot Program, for which the California legislature has allocated $20 million.
PPLA and members of the California Future of Abortion Council also worked to secure historic investments in sexual and reproductive health care including coverage of HPV vaccines, grants for unfunded abortion and contraception services, the establishment of a Reproductive Justice Fund, and more.
“Planned Parenthood Los Angeles continues to be one of our strongest allies in the fight for full, lived equality for LGBTQ+ people. PPLA understands that reproductive freedom and LGBTQ+ equality are linked by the right to bodily autonomy. All Angelenos, including the LGBTQ+ community, are grateful to have an organization like Planned Parenthood Los Angeles as a trusted resource providing quality, comprehensive reproductive care.“
TONY HOANG, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, EQUALITY CALIFORNIA (EQCA)
Spotlight on Behavorial Health
PPLA began piloting adult behavioral health services at our Compton Health Center in 2021, and has since expanded offering these services to patients at the Inglewood center. In September 2022, PPLA began piloting health services via Telehealth for teens who attend one of the 28 high schools at which we have a Wellbeing Center. Teens experiencing mild to moderate mood disorders can access free, cognitive behavioral therapy with one of our licensed therapists. PPLA also offers behavioral health
services in-person at eight Wellbeing Centers on LAUSD campuses. Eligible students may participate in individual psychotherapy, family therapy, group therapy, and psychoeducation groups/workshops.
Building on the deep trust PPLA has in communities throughout LA County, we are uniquely positioned to reduce stigma associated with behavioral health care. This integrated model of care allows adults and teens to get the care they need, on site, and at no cost to them.
“As a recent graduate school graduate with a low income and no insurance, I found Planned Parenthood by chance. They were willing to take me in to give me the care I needed, no questions asked, and loved me for who I am without any judgement or condemnation.”
PPLA PATIENT
The mission of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles is to provide convenient and affordable access to a comprehensive range of quality reproductive health care and sexual health information through patient services, education, and advocacy.
