IN THIS TOGETHER

ANNUAL REPORT 2020-21

DEAR FRIENDS,

As I write to you, we have never been closer to losing the federal right to abortion. In June, the Supreme Court will issue their decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, and we expect that Roe v. Wade will be overturned or severely gutted. Experts predict that when this happens up to 26 states across the U.S. will move to ban abortion, stripping access from up to 36 million people.

In the face of relentless attacks on reproductive rights, I am grateful that California has codified the right to safe and legal abortion in the state constitution. I am grateful that, locally, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, cities of West Hollywood and Long Beach, and other nearby municipalities have declared safe havens for those seeking abortion — no matter what.

Most of all, I am grateful for the strength and commitment of supporters like you.

With that gratitude comes the understanding that regions of the country like ours have the opportunity — and the responsibility — to model, imagine, and create reproductive freedom. In this report, you’ll read about how your support allowed PPLA to keep innovating, growing our footprint, expanding our services, and moving towards a future where everyone has access to comprehensive reproductive and sexual health care. We cannot do this work without you.

With your support, PPLA will keep fighting for care. Thank you for standing alongside us.

With much love,

“Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas and Planned Parenthood Los Angeles have a longstanding, collaborative relationship. In August 2021, with the support of PPLA, PPGT began to provide empowerment kits to patients at health centers. Each kit contains: Plan B Emergency Contraception; a home pregnancy test to identify early pregnancy; condoms; educational materials explaining S.B. 8; and a voter registration card. These kits are provided at no charge to patients between the ages of 15-34. As this moment continues to get more difficult, PPGT and PPLA will continue to work side by side to ensure people in Texas have access to essential healthcare, including abortion services — no matter what.”

The pandemic demanded that PPLA remain nimble to meet the needs of our patients. Thanks to your support, PPLA not only continued operations but expanded our services. Last year, our community based health centers remained open, seeing 228,924 patient visits.

COVID-19 Vaccines: We set up vaccination sites at 8 PPLA health centers, located in communities with disproportionately high rates of COVID-19. We embedded vaccine clinics in our standard health center offerings to help make vaccine access seamless for over 2,000 patients. Additionally, in May, we hosted a vaccine clinic at Esteban Torres High School where we vaccinated students, parents, and administrators.

Prenatal Care: PPLA expanded the prenatal services program in partnership with Cedars-Sinai to offer services to patients throughout their pregnancies. PPLA’s provision of comprehensive, coordinated prenatal health care greatly reduces the risk of infant mortality and pregnancy complications, and improves maternal and infant health outcomes.

New Health Centers to Increase Access: In Spring 2022, we opened new health centers in Inglewood and Huntington Park, with Koreatown opening soon. We continue to expand our footprint with intentional and focused growth into communities lacking accessible and affordable sexual and reproductive health care.

“Thank you so much for the opportunity to rotate through Planned Parenthood and be a part of such an amazing experience. This is such a crucial part of our training and I am very grateful to be able to learn and counsel patients.”

CARE

2 ANNUAL REPORT 2020-21
LONG BEACH FAMILY MEDICAL RESIDENT

Telehealth

In response to COVID-19, PPLA rapidly launched Telehealth. Patients are able to speak with clinicians, receive care remotely and schedule in-person appointments as necessary for lab tests and prescription pick-ups. PPLA now provides Telehealth appointments including the following services:

• family planning

• birth control

• sexually transmitted infections testing and treatment

• Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and PostExposure Prophylaxis (PEP) follow-up

• emergency contraception

• urinary tract infection (UTI) and vaginal infection evaluation

The Telehealth program has been well received by patients seeking care, with over 22,000 Telehealth visits over the fiscal year. We are proud that, even in the face of a pandemic, we continued to push forward, remove barriers to care, and improve health outcomes in Los Angeles County.

Behavioral Health

Many patients come to PPLA during stressful circumstances — struggling with postpartum depression, coming to terms with a difficult medical diagnosis, or in the midst of an unhealthy relationship. Yet, they are often unable to find the behavioral health support they need to navigate these challenges.

To honor our commitment to “care — no matter what” and to better meet the needs of our patients, PPLA began piloting behavioral health services at our Compton Health Center in 2021.

Due to the pilot program’s success, PPLA has expanded behavioral health services to our health center in Inglewood and will pilot behavioral health services for teens through our high schoolbased Wellbeing Centers in the year ahead. We are proud to further our commitment to addressing not only the physical needs, but also the mental and emotional health of our patients.

4 ANNUAL REPORT 2020-21

Black Health Initiative

Developed and led by Black leaders, PPLA’s Black Health Initiative works to improve the health and wellbeing of Black communities, empower people to navigate and advocate for themselves within the health care system, and strengthen long-term, sustainable, and authentic partnership with Black communities.

The Black Health Initiative is being piloted at our newly opened Inglewood Health Center and provides a broad range of clinical services to address health disparities, including prenatal care, perinatal care, and behavioral health care.

In addition to clinical services, the Planned Parenthood Community Center adjacent to the Inglewood Health Center will pilot a wide range of culturally competent care including doula services, community health promoters, and support groups. The community center will also serve as an open space for Black-centered community organizations to come together for partnership and community building.

Promotoras: PPLA’s Promotoras provided adult education to 12,509 individuals on issues from teen health to foster parent engagement. This innovative program features a ten-week curriculum that includes sessions on parentchild communication, substance use prevention, sexuality, gender, contraception, STI/HIV prevention, PrEP and PEP, anatomy, self-esteem, LGBTQ acceptance, and stress management. By offering information in Spanish to the Latinx community, and conducting classes and outreach in schools and other community spaces like local churches — as well as the Consulates of Mexico and Guatemala — the program helps participants overcome barriers to care and get crucial support.

Teacher Training: PPLA educators continued to conduct trainings for teachers on topics such as how to be an approachable adult, anatomy, birth control, and myths regarding sexual and reproductive health — 755 teachers and youthserving professionals were trained.

Peer Advocates: PPLA’s education team facilitated over 300 virtual meetings with Peer Advocates, high school students who are trained by PPLA to serve as resources for sexual and

reproductive health information in schools and communities. Last year, PPLA Peer Advocates connected with 4,577 students to share information about sexual health.

Teen Call Line: PPLA’s dedicated Teen Call Line is available for teens to ask questions on a wide range of topics, including anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues; substance use; sexual and reproductive health; general stress; and relationships. During the fiscal year, we received over 7,000 calls from teens seeking information and counsel.

COVID-19 Community Outreach and Vaccine Education: PPLA Promotoras and Black Health Initiative Educators helped to build vaccine confidence in communities of color by conducting outreach to over 12,500 individuals.

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Partnership: PPLA is partnering with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) residents to provide care at PPLA’s Wellbeing Centers. Working with CHLA not only means increased care for teens, but an opportunity for both PPLA and CHLA to cross-train and improve our respective practices together.

EDUCATION

Wellbeing Centers

Through innovative strategies and groundbreaking partnerships, PPLA is working to ensure that LA County teens are empowered to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.

PPLA provides high quality reproductive and sexual health care at clinics on 29 high school campuses. PPLA‘s dedicated Teen Call Line also provides a safe space where teens can ask questions about sexual health, relationships, or issues with substance abuse, and be linked to care.

Teens also need adult allies. PPLA trains LAUSD teachers and Health Educators from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to deliver sex education based on PPLA’s innovative curriculum.

To encourage parent engagement, our Promotoras provide education and outreach to Spanish speaking parents. We are proud to offer the comprehensive, wraparound care young people need to thrive.

PPLA played a key role in advocating for sexual and reproductive health care and services last year, including:

• Doula services as a Medi-Cal benefit

• Increased state funding of children and youth behavioral health in California

• Extension of telehealth reimbursement as part of the 2021-2022 state budget

• Prop 56 supplemental payments for health care service providers

• $5M in state funding to assist in the establishment of the Institute on Reproductive Health, Law & Policy at the UCLA School of Law

“Planned Parenthood

Los Angeles has been on the frontlines fighting for our communities. With their support, and our advocacy for the district, we were able to secure a $5 million investment to found the UCLA Institute of Reproductive Health, Law & Policy. There is no justice without reproductive justice, and Planned Parenthood Los Angeles is leading the way to protect, expand and provide access to abortions and reproductive services for all Angelinos and those who travel to our community seeking care.”

ASSEMBLYMEMBER ISAAC BRYAN

UCLA School of Law Partnership: We joined with the UCLA School of Law to establish the Law Institute on Reproductive Health, Law & Policy to help educate the next generation of lawyers, legal scholars and judges who are committed to protecting reproductive health nationwide.
