CALABRIA Calabria is located in the centre of the Mediterranean, the region extends southwards from Basilicata and is shaped like a small peninsula surrounded by the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas. It is separated from Sicily by the Strait of Messina. Calabria, the cradle of ancient civilizations, is the area that gave its name to the entire Italian peninsula. “Italia� was in fact the name that was first given to Calabria in honor of its king Italo. THINGS TO DO IN CALABRIA The geographical position, climate and morphology of the territory make Calabria ideal for any type of sporting activity. The particularly extensive coastline, with cliffs falling into the sea alternating with little creeks and endless kilometers of beach, offers the chance to practice swimming, sailing and windsurfing. Underwater diving is particularly exciting and you can explore the fantastic seabed. During the winter, although the peaks are not particularly high, the mountains of Calabria have abundant snowfalls that allow tourists to practice skiing in well equipped ski resorts. During the other seasons the mountainous areas of Calabria and the nature parks are the ideal places for other sports such as trekking, walking or horse riding. There are also plenty of opportunities to practice more adventurous sports such as rafting, river trekking and, in complete safety and guided by qualified professionals, you can try potholing in the area’s numerous natural caves. REGGIO CALABRIA Reggio Calabria, which is the largest town of Calabria and also the main centre of commerce, stands in a splendid position on the eastern coast of the Straits of Messina, where the straits open into the Ionian Sea. It enjoys an exceptionally mild climate all year round and, for this reason, is a popular seaside resort.

CROTONE The territory of the province of Crotone is situated between the Sila mountains to the west and the Ionian Sea to the east, and was in antiquity an area of very early Greek settlements; ancient Kroton, the present province capital, was the hometown of Pitagoras, Milo, Alcmeon. In the early 20th century the province had a remarkable industrial development, and though most of the chemical plants of those days were closed, the car industry is still growing. The main resources however are in the tourist sector and agricultural production, especially wine and wheat.


LOCATION Located a short drive north of Crotone, lies the town of Carati. Cariati Marina is a wonderful, small, historical village with approximately 8.300 inhabitants, situated in the eastern part of the region. The village is located on the Ionian Coast and it has a well preserved historical centre that is surrounded by the 15th Century town walls. It is on a small hill which gives Cariati a privileged position and allows visitors to enjoy its lovely fishermen port and marina. It has extremely easy access to all kinds of shops, restaurants and bars around the village. Ciro Marina is a very well known town because of its wine producing and is only 30km from Cariati Marina. LOCATION Cirò Marina is located about 40 kilometers north of the areas capital town of Crotone in the province of the same name. Relatively speaking this is a tiny province comprising of around 27 small towns with about a third of the region’s population living in the capital town. The ancient city of Crotone (Greek Kroton) was renamed Crotone in the late 1920’s and has been an important centre of maritime commerce since the 8th century. It was also once known as the city of physicians even housing a school of Pythagoras in the 6th century furthermore when Hannibal threatened Rome in the 3rd century he spent 3 years in the city before moving on. The region of Calabria is, despite its extensive coastline, one of the most heavily wooded areas in Italy. Sila National Park is an absolute treasure situated between the East and West coastlines (Ionian and Mediterranean respectively) and we implore visitors arriving at Lemezia Terme to take the time and trouble to navigate the hills and hairpin bends of the roads that cuts through the mountains from west to east coast; it’s a lovely journey and well worth the extra hour or so of the more direct highway route. Beautiful, almost alpine villages can be found along the way plus some staggering views of the surrounding hills and lakes and, if you are lucky enough to travel during the winter months, the mountain tops will be snow capped and suitable for winter sports yet the coast can still be bathed in warm winter sunlight.
