From Paper to Silk
Luigia Granata elabora il progetto Dalla Carta alla Seta come parte di una visione più ampia, quella dell’Arte a Passeggio: portare l’arte fuori dai musei e dalle gallerie, farne un oggetto che gratifica quotidianamente il senso estetico, per poter vivere il prodotto artistico in un’altra dimensione, più intima e insieme narcisistica. Trasformare un dipinto in un foulard non solo permette a chiunque di godere della bellezza di un’opera d’arte, ma permette all’opera di accarezzare la pelle attraverso il tocco magico della pura seta, regalando un’esperienza quasi sinestetica. Il progetto parte dalla carta su cui l’artista poi lavorerà, realizzata a mano con maestri cartai a Fabriano: un supporto prezioso, espressione della migliore artigianalità italiana, base per i colori e le figure dipinti da Luigia Granata con pregiati acquerelli russi e inglesi. L’immagine del dipinto, inviata alle migliori aziende comasche del settore della seta, viene impressa per mezzo di stampa sublimatica sul pregiato tessuto, un crêpe satin di pura seta con trattamento manopesca. Il risultato è un accessorio della massima qualità, dato l’impiego di assolute eccellenze nei diversi stadi di lavorazione; ogni foulard, pareo o scialle è un pezzo unico, capace di emozionare in modi sempre diversi: la sensorialità sublime della seta accarezza il tatto, l’esplosione di colori appaga la vista, i temi rappresentati coinvolgono l’immaginazione ed evocano il sogno con i loro rimandi altamente simbolici. I temi di Luigia Granata, osservatrice dell’animo umano, viaggiano sempre sul filo tra narcisismo e introspezione, estetica ed anima. Grazie alla sua profonda conoscenza del colore (la pittrice è esperta in cromoterapia e psicologia del colore), le sue opere comunicano fortemente con chi le ammira, trasmettendo istintivamente sensazioni profonde.
The artist Luigia Granata conceived the project From Paper to Silk as part of a larger project called Strolling with Art. Her purpose is to let artworks out of museums and galleries, transforming them in objects capable to fulfil our daily need for beauty. Transforming a painting in a scarf is a way to experience a work of art in a completely different and new perspective, at the same time more intimate and narcissistic. From Paper to Silk not only allows anybody to enjoy the beauty of an artwork, it also allows the work of art to establish a relationship with the senses through the magical feel of pure silk, providing an almost synesthetic experience. The project begins with the paper which the artist will use for her work: it is handmade in Fabriano by the artist herself with the help of papermaking experts and is a valuable material, an example of the best Italian handicraft, which serves as a basis for the colours and shapes painted by Luigia Granata with precious Russian and English watercolours. The image of the painting is then sent to the best factories in the Como silk production district, where it is printed by dye sublimation printing on an exquisite fabric: a silk crepe back satin with peach skin finish. The result is an accessory of the utmost quality, thanks to the selection of the best materials and techniques in every manufacturing step. Every scarf, shawl or sarong is a unique piece capable of conveying always different feelings: the sublime texture of silk caresses the skin, the gorgeous colours gratify the eye, the subjects painted engage our imagination and recall dreams with their highly symbolical references. Luigia Granata is a keen observer of human essence; her themes revolve around the concepts of narcissism and introspection, aesthetics and soul. Thanks to her extensive knowledge of colour (she is an expert in chromotherapy and colour psychology), her works establish a subtle relationship with the beholder, instinctively conveying strong feelings.
Caminannu ppe’ Cusenza L’ultimo progetto di Luigia Granata è una dichiarazione d’amore alla sua città, la bella Cosenza. Questo progetto si aggiunge al precedente L’Arte a Passeggio, ampliandolo, e ne condivide l’idea di partenza: fare sì che l’opera d’arte entri nella vita di tutti i giorni, indossata e portata a passeggio sotto forma di accessorio moda. Portare sulla pelle scorci di Cosenza reinterpretati dall’occhio d’artista e dal sapiente uso del colore di Luigia Granata diventa un’emozione, specialmente se lo si fa passeggiando proprio nel centro storico della città: la bellezza reale che si riflette nella sua immagine, dando vita ad un gioco di rimandi infinito. Caminannu ppe’ Cusenza è proprio quello che il suo nome annuncia: una passeggiata per il centro storico della città bruzia, pieno di scorci incantevoli e viste suggestive. Imponenti palazzi nobiliari e strettissimi vicoli, piazzette silenziose e maestose chiese gotiche; Cosenza è una città dal carattere forte e affascinante, ricca com’è di storia e di cultura, e merita di essere conosciuta meglio, anche dagli stessi cosentini. Sulla seta di altissima qualità fioriscono incantevoli stampe dei colorati acquerelli che Luigia ha dedicato alla città, scegliendo i monumenti più importanti e amati: la splendida cattedrale, il neoclassico teatro Rendano, la chiesa di San Domenico con la sua bella cupola verde, il castello normanno-svevo con la maestosa torre ottagonale, la scenografica fontana dei tredici canali e alcuni scorci e vedute della città particolarmente suggestivi.
Strolling through Cosenza Luigia Granata’s latest project is a real declaration of love to her beloved city, the beautiful Cosenza. This project joins the previous Strolling with Art, expanding and developing it. The inspiring concept is the same: making the work of art an object we can enjoy every day, wearing it as a fashionable garment in our strolls through the city. Wearing on the skin Luigia’s watercolours of Cosenza, so personal and full of wonderful colours, is an artistic experience in itself, but much more so when you do it while walking through the streets of its old town centre: real beauty meets its reflection, in a game of endless references. Caminannu ppe’ Cusenza means strolling through Cosenza, and this is exactly what the project is about: a pleasant stroll through the historic centre of the Bruttian city, so full of lovely spots and enchanting views. Impressive aristocratic mansions and narrow alleys, quiet small piazzas and majestic gothic churches; Cosenza is a city with an old history of art and culture and deserves to be better known, also by its own dwellers. The lovely watercolours Luigia dedicated to the city are printed on silk cloth of the highest quality; the artist has chosen the most important and popular monuments of Cosenza, its landmarks: the wonderful Cathedral, the neoclassic Rendano Theatre, the church of San Domenico with its distinctive green baroque dome, the Hohenstaufen castle with its impressive octagonal tower, the shapely fountain of the 13 channels, and some of the most enchanting spots and vistas of the city.
L’Arte a Passeggio Nel progetto L’Arte a Passeggio, i dipinti di Luigia Granata diventano accessori di alta pelletteria, con un processo di lavorazione che mira sempre ad esigere la massima qualità in tutti i passaggi: l’opera d’arte viene trasferita su canvas per stampa sublimatica, la pelle utilizzata è solo vitello italiano lavorato da maestri pellettieri; l’intero processo si svolge interamente in Italia, facendone un prodotto del migliore e più prestigioso Made in Italy. Anche il numero di riproduzioni di uno stesso soggetto è estremamente limitato: ne vengono prodotti al massimo nove pezzi, e la lavorazione artigianale assicura comunque l’unicità dell’accessorio finito. Luigia Granata elabora l’idea che sta a fondamento de L’Arte a Passeggio per fare uscire le opere d’arte dai luoghi classici in cui si trovano, musei e gallerie: portare l’arte in strada, portarla addosso, perchè il tempo per visitare i musei è poco nelle giornate frenetiche che viviamo, e non tutti sono abituati o propensi ad entrare in una galleria d’arte. L’Arte a Passeggio diventa un modo per fruire e godere dell’arte contemporanea al di fuori del tempo e dello spazio – spesso limitati – che le si concedono oggigiorno. Il concetto fondamentale su cui si impernia il progetto è quello di spostamento del valore e del significato dell’opera d’arte: il dipinto diventa una bozza della vera opera, la borsa o il portafogli, che acquisiscono lo status di oggetto artistico indipendente che veicola tutti i valori e significati traslati del dipinto. Portare una borsa o un foulard Luigia Granata Design diventa in certo qual modo una performance artistica in sé: chi li indossa si fa portatore di bellezza, godendo dell’opera e permettendo a chiunque altro di ammirarla a sua volta, creando un museo itinerante per le strade della città. Le opere della pittrice, quindi, si troveranno sempre di più fuori dai musei, per strada, entreranno a far parte della nostra vita quotidiana donandoci il piacere di portare sempre con noi un oggetto artistico unico e di qualità eccelsa.
Strolling with Art In the project Strolling with Art, Luigia Granata’s paintings become exclusive leather bags and accessories through a production process which strictly respects the highest quality standards in every step. The work of art is printed on nautical canvas by dye sublimation printing, the leather used is only Italian calfskin handled by expert workers; the whole process takes place in Italy, making these bags a prestigious Made in Italy product. Only nine copies – at most – of every subject are printed on different objects; this, together with the artisanal manufacturing, ensures the uniqueness of the object itself. Luigia Granata develops the idea that is the foundation of Strolling with Art to let works of art out of their traditional places, museums and galleries. Nowadays, we live a hectic life and we have little time to go to museums and art galleries, so wearing an artwork is a way to live and enjoy contemporary art without restrictions in time and space. The basic concept on which the project pivots is a shift in value and meaning of the work of art: the painting becomes a mere blueprint for the real artistic object, the bag or wallet, which acquires the status of an independent artwork and conveys all the meanings and significance of the painting. Wearing a Luigia Granata Design bag or scarf becomes an action of performance art in itself: who wears them becomes a herald of beauty, enjoying the artwork himself and allowing others to admire it, even becoming part of a strolling museum. It is therefore a fact that Luigia Granata’s works are to be found more on the streets than in art galleries; they will become part of our everyday life, giving us the possibility to take always with us a unique artistic object of the utmost quality.

Luigia Granata
Nata a Cosenza nel 1971, artista e designer. Già direttore artistico dell’UCAI (Unione Cattolica Artisti Italiani) e dell’associazione universitaria PUL (Proposta Universitaria Libera) dell’UNICAL (Università della Calabria). Responsabile dei laboratori di scultura per Exodus, fondazione che si occupa del recupero di ragazzi con problemi di tossicodipendenza. Dopo un corso come educatore biografo, sperimenta l’autobiografia attraverso le immagini, che fa parte di un percorso conoscitivo-educativo. Fondatrice negli anni ‘80 del gruppo Art3 insieme agli artisti Giuliana Franco e Franco Bitonti. Esperta in cromoterapia e psicologia del colore, illustratrice per riviste, quotidiani e testi universitari per la Yale University. Le sue opere sono esposte in mostre permanenti negli Stati Uniti, a New York, presso la sede dell’ANC (Associazione Nazionale Carabinieri) e nella Belmont Library; in Canada al Centro di Cultura Italiana Leonardo da Vinci a Montréal. Partecipa alla Biennale di Venezia curata da Vittorio Sgarbi e cura LiberaMente per Invasioni 2014. Tra i numerosissimi premi di cui è stata insignita, ha ricevuto nel 2005 il premio Flavio Magno Aurelio Cassiodoro col patrocinio del Presidente della Repubblica. Nel 2013 lancia la linea di accessori moda Luigia Granata Design, che si basa sul progetto L’Arte a Passeggio; l’intento è quello di fare uscire da musei e gallerie le opere d’arte per portarle in strada sotto forma di borse, foulard, portafogli.
Luigia Granata was born in Cosenza in 1971; she is an artist and designer. She is the artistic director of the UCAI (Catholic Union of Italian Artists) and of the university association Proposta Universitaria Libera (Independent University Proposal) of UNICAL (University of Calabria). She is currently in charge of the sculpture workshop for Exodus, a foundation whose purpose is the rehabilitation of young people with substance use disorders. After attending a course on education through biography, she tries to develop the painted autobiography as a step in an educational path. She founded in the 1980s the group Art3 with fellow artists Giuliana Franco and Franco Bitonti. An expert in chromotherapy and colour psychology, she is also an illustrator for magazines, newspapers and university textbooks for Yale University. Her works are on permanent display in New York, in the offices of ANC (Carabinieri National Association) and in the Belmont Library, and in Canada in Montreal, at the Leonardo da Vinci Centre for Italian Culture. She was a participant in the 54th Venezia Biennale curated by Vittorio Sgarbi and curated the LiberaMente collective exhibition in the 2014 Invasioni Festival in Cosenza. Among the many awards she received, she was awarded in 2005 the Flavio Magno Aurelio Cassiodoro with the patronage of the President of the Italian Republic. In 2013, she launches the fashion line Luigia Granata Design, which manufactures leather and silk accessories. This fashion line is tied to the project Strolling with Art, a way to let works of art out of their traditional places, museums and galleries.
