BALAKLAVA CUP SPECIAL FORM GUIDE

Racing Ambassadors here to help Ethan Allen reports: CUP ambassadors have been a staple to the Balaklava Cup for years, and normally grouped with the Face of the Cup, ambassadors bring the latest styles and trends to Cup day. Selling raffle tickets throughout the day, ambassadors meet and mingle with as many people as they can while also lending a hand with events such as Fashions on the Field. If you’re lost or need a hand locating the whereabouts of amenities, the betting ring or your marquee, the Cup ambassadors can guide you in the right direction. Each year a group of young locals are selected for this important role and can be identified in the Cup crowd wearing an ambassador sash. This year’s Cup ambassadors are Cecily Gameau, Danielle Hosking, Sarah Heaslip and Amy McCabe. All four are thrilled to be Cup ambassadors and while this won’t be the first Cup or ambassador role for Cecily, Danielle and Sarah, it is for Amy. “I’m super excited to have been asked to be an ambassador, it should be a fantastic day out,” Amy said. Veteran of the Cup ambassador role, Danielle Hosking is also ready for all the race day action in this, her seventh year as Cup ambassador. “We walk around most of the day, and go in and out of marquees regularly so if anyone needs any help, just come and talk to us we’re be more than happy to lend a hand,” Danielle said.

Melissa Barnes who was last year’s Face of the Cup will judge the competition alongside Jamie Rielly and Lauren Dilena, with MC Terry Rogers keeping the crowd entertained for the event. Fashions on the Field coordinator, Bonnie Parker, said the regional event last year proved to be a great hit. “This year, judges will be looking for style, originality, overall appearance and attention to detail within entrant’s outfits,” Bonnie said. “We’ve been given some amazing

prizes for those who win the events, with a gold pendant necklace valued at $2000, a $1000 gold watch from Class A Jewellers, $2000 voucher to use at Tailors of Distinction, fine art photography package valued at $670 from Bush Pony Photography and a $350 millinery voucher to Rose Piscioneri Millinery.” Alissa Jane Klingberg will be alongside the judges as this year’s Face of the Cup lending a hand to give her style input throughout the day. Alissa’s fashion tip on Cup day is to dress appropriately for the weather conditions and wear comfortable footwear. The Fashions on the Field event will be held in the betting ring, with entrants needing to register before 12.30pm on race day to make sure they reserve a spot on centre stage.

John loves life in the fast lane

John Pearce, right, with his wife Sandra arrived from Brisbane on Monday to check out their favourite marquee in Australia, The Barton. PHOTOS: ETHAN ALLEN IT’S lucky the Queensland borders are open to travel as it has allowed John Pearce and his wife Sandra to attend this year’s Balaklava Cup. John has had a long-term involvement with Balaklava Racing Club, attending and supporting the races for about 10 years, and was honoured last year to receive life membership, which he said came as a ‘complete surprise!’ “I had no idea I was receiving that award - and just a few weeks before that, I’d had another surprise being put into the Brisbane Lions Hall of Fame,” John said. John is also a member of the Lethal Lions club, and said three other members of that club will be attending Balaklava Cup today too. “Usually there are two or three here, but today we have four of the 10 members here,” he said. John has been a patron of the Brisbane Lions since 2015, and was the number one ticket holder from 2002-2008. John was great mates with another Balaklava Racing Club and Lethal Lions member, the late Dr Alan Smith, who was a great mate of racing club CEO, Doug Hall. Subsequently, through Alan, John also became friends with Doug and a proud supporter of the racing club. About six years ago, John was on the board of the Australian Sports Foundation (ASF), a group that provides a fundraising platform to provide donors with tax-deductible receipts

28

Louise Michael reports: on their donation to sporting organisations. “During that time, while car racing was considered a sport, the ASF didn’t consider horse racing was, so donors couldn’t receive any tax deductions,” he said. John took the issue up with the CEO, Patrick Walter, who took the issue further ‘up the ranks’ and a few months later, horse racing was deemed a ‘sport’, with donations to the sport now considered tax deductible. Today, John and Sandra will enjoy a relaxing day in the Barton marquee, looked after by Balaklava ‘hostess with the mostest’, Pam Pym. “I grew up on a farm in country Victoria, so love getting out in the countryside to Balaklava for the races - it’s a great atmosphere and a wonderful day,” he said. While he has technically ‘retired’, he still has a family investment company now run by his son, Jonathan. John and Sandra live right in the heart of Brisbane’s CBD, living on the top floor of the Riparian Plaza, some 200m high. When he gets home, John is hoping to attend an AFL final and would love to see his beloved Lions take out this year’s AFL flag. John might have better odds backing the John Pearce, centre, named life member of the Balaklava Racing Club at the 2019 Cup winner! Cup with club CEO Doug Hall, left, and then Chairman Wayne Henson. Abbey sings up a storm TALENTED local singer, Abbey Bubner’s first outing to the Balaklava Cup will be one to remember, as she will be singing the national anthem, a cappella style! Abbey said she has only sung the anthem with vocal ensembles before, not solo and without accompaniment, but is looking forward to the big day. “I’m a little nervous as I found out it might be televised - I’ve only ever had assessments recorded before,” she said. “I only have to sing one verse so it should be fine.” Abbey said it was unfortunate only 2000 people were allowed to attend the races, but was looking forward to the atmosphere of the

Louise Michael reports: biggest racing event in the district. Besides singing on Cup day, Abbey has singing lessons at the conservatorium in Adelaide, and is an advanced student at the Open Music Academy. She is also in the throes of completing her year 12 studies at Balaklava High School. Later this month, Abbey will also undertake an audition and interview to study a degree in music-singing, at university. “It’s very competitive but I’m feeling confident,” Abbey said.

Roll out the barrel, Team Balaklava defies the odds to ensure…

Club beats Cup COVID Ethan Allen reports: CLEAN out the beer lines and roll out the kegs, Balaklava Cup is on for 2020. While only 2000 people can attend today’s Cup, there is no shortage of fun, fashion, great weather, beer and of course, plenty of punting. Balaklava Racing Club (BRC) grounds staff have been flat-out getting each marquee ready for you to enjoy the perfect country race day out. With plenty of bark chips spread, barrels to lean on and plenty of seats, your Cup day will be one to remember. With social distancing guidelines needing to be adhered to, you may notice this year there is a tad more space around marquees to allow for the twosquare-metre per person rule. Located at each marquee entrance are hand sanitiser units for patrons to use when entering or leaving marquees. For the first time, at the entrance of each marquee is a fantastic new white picket fence that adds to the country atmosphere, and designed to keep the rabbits out and guests in! This year, adhering to SA Health COVID guidelines so race goers don’t need to stray far, toilets will be conveniently located behind every marquee.

BALAKLAVA CUP SPECIAL FORM GUIDE

Races right on track! BALAKLAVA Racing Club’s track is looking better than ever according to track curator, Matt Hall. With the trials and tribulations of the COVID pandemic causing the uncertainty of the Balaklava Cup in the lead up to the event, the track is in top condition and ready for race day. “The track has never been this good in the lead up to a Cup before, there have been no troubles at all in the lead up to Cup day,” Matt said. With frost scares throughout winter, the track has bounced back to green with spring conditions bringing the track back to top form. “The warm weather and rain we’ve been lucky enough to receive has been fantastic for the track and the last minute rain on Saturday was just the icing on the

Ethan Allen reports: cake,” Matt said. Publican’s race day on July 29 was the last time horses ran on the track, with the rail being taken out six metres from its normal true position. “Taking the rail out six metres really helped us get consistently even wear across the whole track, but of course we’ve now moved the rail back to its true position for the Cup,” Matt said. With the track ready for Cup day, the 2000 punters who will be allowed through the gate are guaranteed a great day of racing. PHOTO: ETHAN ALLEN

BALAKLAVA CUP SPECIAL FORM GUIDE

Changing of the guard

Balaklava Racing Club CEO, Doug Hall, right, with new chairman, Andrew Manuel. PHOTO: ETHAN ALLEN

Balaklava Cup keeps winning over the hearts of the punter What a year to be ordained the new chairman of the Balaklava Racing Club (BRC). Long serving BRC chairman, Wayne Henson, retired in March, some may say at the top of his game, after 25 years service. This is when I took over the reins, some may say at the bottom of my game, but at least the only way to go is up! Now I’m not one to whinge…and there could be a lot worse things we could complain about, but COVID-19 was only introduced into our vernacular about a week after Wayne retired. And wasn’t our entire world thrown into chaos? But in the face of adversity we must praise the racing industry, who managed to navigate through this new world of chaos almost unscathed. We are the lucky ones in South Australia with the wretched pandemic thankfully almost being scratched out. Initially the industry was able to keep racing, with extensive safety measures, which meant only industry people were allowed on course - just jockeys, trainers and direct participants. Once restrictions eased, we were allowed to have members and restricted crowds back on track. Balaklava Racing Club was formed in 1903. We have had more than 100 Balaklava Cups, and every year is different – this year is no exception. We’ve had wind storms, floods, you name it – we’ve had it. During the floods in 2015 we had volunteers and workers putting massive grain bunker tarps over the track and pumping water off in the morning, peeling tarps back during the day, then doing all the same again before the next rain. This year, with recent SA Health restric-

34

By Andrew Manuel, BRC Chairman tions, we were able to have 1000 patrons on course, and amazingly this was extended to 2000 on Wednesday last week. This year we have set up six marquees - the biggest year was 2011 where we had more than 60 marquees and 15,000 guests. So while this year may not be the biggest Balaklava Cup, Team Balaklava is trying their hardest to make sure it’s the best. Our COVID Management Plan means we have to follow stricter rules than usual with tickets needing to be pre-purchased. Social distancing rules must be followed, and punters must be seated while drinking and eating. We all want to make sure everyone is safe during these tough times, so we have an army of COVID marshals to look after the crowd.

Characters of the Cup There are a lot of characters involved with BRC. One of our life members is Brett Rovere. Brett has taken holidays for the last 20 years to travel from Victoria selflessly to volunteer his time to help set up the event. Due to COVID, Brett is unable to make it 21 years in a row, but he will be playing along from home. One of the massive jobs involved with setting up for the Cup is building the city of marquees. Graham Edgerton from Atlas Party Hire, who is a sponsor, put up his first marquee

at Balaklava in 1980 – although there is some conjecture it was 1978. So that’s 40 years of building and pulling down tents. Marquees have become a lot more involved now. The first one was like a circus tent with a big pole up the middle, now some of them are flashier than my house…well almost. Pam Pym and Jenni Hosking from Balaklava jumped into the office and helped out at the drop of a hat when we found out we had our crowd extended to 2000 last week. Pam, with help from husband, Tony, also runs our premier marquee, The Barton. Tickets are $350 a pop, but it’s a room which has to be seen to be believed. Ice sculptures, oysters and champagne, and with a theme of James Bond this year, we just might have one of the James Bond cars parked in the front of the marquee! The car is owned by another BRC legend, Glenn Cooper. Coopers has sponsored BRC for 20 years, keeping patrons hydrated and making sure the local farmers get to try their barley crops from last harvest. Balaklava’s Joyce Fisher celebrated her 102 birthday last weekend, and for most of her life, along with many of her friends, has cooked and catered for the races. One of the secrets behind the club is the community caterers who make the best jelly cakes, curried eggs, and cut sandwiches you’ll ever try. One of my memories as a youngster was going to the races with my Nanna, Vida Manuel, who used to make the custard. It spilled in her car and the car smelled like off custard for the next 10 years. BRC only has two employees in the office, and three preparing the track, so it’s quite amazing they can manage such a big event. Doug Hall is the CEO and is 65. What he doesn’t know about racing isn’t worth know-

ing. Helen Stringfellow works the phones and makes sure everything is organised. Like all the sports clubs in regional South Australia, there is an army of volunteers who come and help set up. These include: Jesse Rayner who has been volunteering for 16 years, which is half his life time as he’s in his early 30s now; Peter Muret from West Adelaide football fame, who is also a life member, and busts his boiler making sure everything is in tip top shape; Bonnie Parker has organised a fantastic line up of prizes for fashions on the field valued at more than $10,000; plus way too many more to mention. So who will win the Balaklava Cup in 2020? To be honest, I think anyone who has been able to make it to the track today has already won the quaddie, the first four, and the trifecta. Make sure you remember those who would give their left arm to be at the track today, and I hope you all enjoy yourselves responsibly. But special mention to Tony and Calvin McEvoy who always do well at Balaklava. They nominated 17 horses, and five acceptances for the main dance. I have my eye on Balf’s Choice trained by Ryan Balfour. The club has a respect for this horse who won the 2017 Balaklava Cup and had Will Pike onboard. Will is a legendary jockey from Western Australia and it was amazing to watch when we had him racing around our track. Balf’s Choice has been in the news as it has had time out of racing, but is coming back into form. The weather looks perfect for another unique Balaklava Cup, and special credit to Matt Hall who has prepared one of the best racing surfaces, for one of the biggest attended Cups we might have in Australia this year!
