There are many, many festivals to enjoy this summer from Latitude, which we preview on pages 34 & 35, and which just seems to get bigger and bigger each year, to the Great Yarmouth Arts Festival whilst also calling in at the inaugural Southwold Arts Festival.

Alistair McGowan

A

listair McGowan, the man of many voices, is also a man of many talents, to judge by his varied CV. He seems to have excelled in every area of show business. Best known perhaps as an impressionist, Alistair has also written, directed and starred in West End musicals and Gilbert and Sullivan, and has had a thriving career as a straight actor.

He’s performed in plays by writers as diverse as Alan Bennett and David Mamet and his Shakespeare credits include Measure for Measure, and a musical version of The Merry Wives of Windsor. Does the man ever sleep? Or take time off?

‘I never get bored – possibly because I never give myself the chance to get bored,’ he reflects.

Alistair has now returned to the boards for a second bite at the cherry which is the role of Professor Henry Higgins in Pygmalion, Shaw’s evergreen comedy about class and society. Alistair’s first encounter with the character came under unusual circumstances, as he recalls.

‘I was asked to take over from Rupert Everett for the final three weeks of a West End run three years ago. I had about four weeks’ notice and I learnt the part lying on a beach in France. I had very little rehearsal in which to try and get to grips with this meaty role and under such circumstances, you have to focus on the task in hand.

‘I then decided that the best way to deal with the pressure was to forget about it with some displacement activity, like cleaning the cupboards and mowing the lawn. As a result, I hurt my back and for the first two weeks of the run of Pygmalion, I could hardly stand and barely sit.’

Given such painful memories, it’s surprising that Alistair agreed so eagerly to revisit the part of Higgins.

‘I like him, I know him and we both share an interest in the specifics of the smallest sounds and we are both fascinated by what accent can say about who we are. We still make judgements about people, based on how they sound: you hear someone speak and within a couple of sentences, it says

something about their background.’

Alistair reveals that he shares certain personality traits with Higgins. ‘I can get quite irritable about life and Higgins can get extremely irritable. I generally go out of my way to be sensitive to other people’s needs but Higgins barely notices anybody else; he’s obsessed with his subject and obsessed by his work.

In a way, it’s quite therapeutic for me to get rid of my dark side through playing Higgins’.

The Professor would appear to be a confirmed bachelor with little or no experience of emotional relationships with women.

Does Alistair believe that Eliza inspires feelings in Higgins, which have lain, unsuspected, within his subconscious?

‘He’s certainly wrapped up in his own work and he is not aware of his physical appearance and he seems to have largely spurned women,’ says Alistair. ‘But Eliza does arouse certain feelings within him. When she leaves, Higgins says vaguely that he’s grown accustomed to her voice and appearance. And modern audiences will want Higgins and Eliza to get together and wonder why they don’t.’

Alistair is inclined to downplay the element of romance in Pygmalion, however. He contends that Shaw is dealing with more substantial issues.

‘I believe that what is important for Shaw and for Higgins is the place which each one of us occupies on the ladder. Shaw asks if you can take a person like Eliza from one section of society and introduce her into another world. Will they be happy in this new milieu?’

Shaw’s ideas about the organisation of society and the way in which accent can reveal our place within the social structure are no less relevant today, when social mobility has all but ground to a halt. How should we behave in such circumstances?

Pygmalion is perhaps better known to the wider public as the source of Lerner and Loewe’s musical masterpiece My Fair Lady. The 1956 Broadway production was enormously successful and the 1964 film version added to its impact. Alistair believes, however, that the passage of time may have redressed the

balance somewhat between the play and the musical.

‘I’ve been thinking about questions of time and when I was growing up the songs from My Fair Lady were everywhere. The show had opened only 25 years earlier and we thought about it in the way that younger generations must think now about Les Misérables. I wonder if the younger actors in our production will even have heard of My Fair Lady. On the other hand, would I like to play Higgins in the musical? You bet!’

Alistair’s courageous decision to step into the breach in the earlier West End production gives us a clue, perhaps, about the source of his multifarious talents.

‘I love taking on a challenge in life, I like taking on a challenge in sport and I like learning new things,’ he declares. ‘I also enjoy the challenge of not doing the obvious but to an extent you sometimes have to give the public what they want.’

Interestingly, Alistair’s desire to explore fresh areas wasn’t necessarily the best career move, as he ruefully explains.

‘I’d done four series of The Big Impression and when I said no to the BBC about doing a fifth, I thought that I’d turn to a number of things which I’ve been planning to do for some time, such as Shakespeare, light opera and writing a play. I did think, naively, that I could then go back to the BBC and tell them that I now was happy to do Series Five of The Big Impression.

But you don’t realise until it’s too late that there are certain rules which you have to follow in this business.

Nobody tells you that when you walk away, the door will be firmly closed when you next come calling.’

Alistair, however, seems to take a philosophical view of what happened; stressing how much he’s been enjoying a return to live stand-up. Doing impersonations was something of a McGowan family tradition, apparently.

‘My sister and I both picked up the habit from our mother who would tell stories about people in their own voices,’ he reveals. ‘Somebody once said to me that all I have to do is say something in a funny voice and people will laugh. But you need to do much more than that, of course. Not only do you have to look like the people you’re impersonating, you have to sound like them as well and at the same time you have to be funny.

‘You also have to choose people to impersonate who mean something to the public and that has become much harder. Once I’d buy the Radio Times every week and I’d go through the list of programmes and who was appearing in them. In this way, I could keep an eye on what was on television and what people were watching. But this was in the days of only four channels. Now there are so many different platforms, when you have E4 or Dave or Watch, it’s almost impossible to keep up.’

Some actors compile lists of the parts they’d like to play but Alistair prefers not to follow their example, explaining that: ‘you’ll get disappointed if you fail to meet the targets you’ve set yourself.’ He would like to do more directing, however, and he’s always open to surprise suggestions.

‘I’m content to continue as I am,’ he concludes, ‘dipping my toes into the sullied waters of showbiz.’

I

t is surely appropriate that the cast of Pygmalion, a play that deals so cogently with issues arising from the class system, should include a genuine aristocrat in the shape of Rula Lenska, an authentic Polish countess. She’s tackling the role of Mrs Higgins, mother of Professor Higgins, and reckons: ‘She has impeccable manners and is something of a grande dame. She certainly expects to be listened to!’

Rula, now in her mid 60s but still with that glorious flame-coloured hair, is enjoying being on the road, getting to visit various friends and family members around the country. ‘And I try to do a little sight seeing although I am not a morning person, I like to lie and read in bed.

‘Of course, a tour really works when it is a good production, with a good cast. We have been getting full houses so it is a joy.’

Rula has a stunning selection of gowns to wear in the show but reveals that they all require a corset. ‘It forces you to sit well, no slouching! But you have to be careful what you eat, only light meals are possible. They were made to measure and I get to wear a gorgeous wig, too.’

How did Rula’s aristocratic background influence her personality, the finished person?

‘I think that Shaw is saying in Pygmalion that you should stay in your class. When I was writing my autobiography My Colourful Life, I did wonder what would have happened, had my parents not left Poland to come to this country. I think that my upbringing left me with a certain poise which people often remark on.’

In view of her origins amid the Polish nobility, how did her aspirations to go on the stage go down with her parents?

‘They weren’t very happy about it,’ Rula recalls. ‘My father wanted me to get a job at the United Nations but neither of them thought that acting was a suitable career choice for me. In fact they believed that it was akin to being a prostitute and they knew that it was a very precarious business. I did as they wanted.

I finished school, I sat my A-Levels, I did a secretarial course. But then I still applied for drama school and slowly my parents became accustomed to how I earned my living.’

Happily, both Rula’s parents lived long enough to see her make a success of her chosen profession and given the honour of being the subject of This Is Your Life. But where did Rula contract the acting bug?

‘I loved the element of showing off and as teenagers my sisters and I would learn the lyrics of the hits of the day and then perform them. I adored being the centre of attention and I’d stand in front of the mirror miming songs. Whenever there was an opportunity to perform, I’d seize it and I loved - and still do being different people.’

Rula’s names are something of a contraction of the monikers she was given at birth. Has it proved a hindrance or a help in her career to

rejoice in something so Slavic and un-British?

‘The Principal at my drama school advised me to anglicise my name but I stuck to my guns and said that I didn’t want to lose it. I think my name has led to me being cast as spies and femmes fatales, ladies of a certain class.

Rula achieved the all-important breakthrough back in 1976 with ITV’s Rock Follies, a witty series about three young women forming an all female band and finding a way through the treacherous waters of the pop industry. In the intervening years she has worked very steadily but now she senses that change is in the air.

‘In playing Mrs Higgins, I’m jumping over the garden fence and into a new category – I’m going from glamorous leading lady to character actress.’

Happily, Rula is not completely leaving the glamour-pusses behind, saying: ‘I can still pull it out of the hat when required. But as you get older, you become much less concerned with what people think and as a result, I’m much more at peace.’

The process of writing her memoirs was both ‘an exercise in memory’ and ‘intended to be a history for my grandson. I’ve always known I was a romantic but one pattern in my life which I hadn’t fully recognised previously was my habit of running straight towards the Danger Sign. I’d charge towards it with open arms. My life’s been a series of extreme highs and extreme lows and people who live their lives on an even keel may not have experienced the lows but they have missed out on the highs as well.’

The lows have consisted of seven months in a Sardinian jail and a period when her private life became public property.

‘That was down to the British Press more than anything,’ says Rula. ‘They tend to shower you with rose petals when you’re on the way up and then reuse what you have said out of context. Of course, you have a duty to do publicity and to speak to the press but you can only pray that they’ll treat you fairly.’

One of the reasons for Rula’s current contentment is the presence in her life of Ethan, her two-year-old grandson. Clearly Granny dotes on the little chap and especially enjoys tackling jigsaws with him. ‘I love spending a couple of hours on the floor with him, he’s such a bright spark.

‘I adore being a grandmother and I’m enjoying reliving my daughter’s childhood.

What is so moving is the unbelievable joy with which he greets new discoveries; he is open to everything and it’s wonderful.’

After the Pygmalion tour, and Norwich is the final date, Rula is planning some family time and would love to tackle a TV series. ‘You never retire, dear. Acting is what keeps you going!’ she laughs.

T

he BBC’s Springwatch series, now in its 10th year, is watched by almost 3 million viewers a night who love to learn a bit more about the natural world around them.

As one of its presenters, bubbly Michaela Strachan, says: ‘That’s our aim, simply to inspire people to get outdoors and see and appreciate British wildlife.’

Springwatch will be based at Minsmere, on the Suffolk Heritage Coast, this year and next year, with hopes that it could also return in 2016.

The main programmes, also hosted by Chris Packham and Martin Hughes-Games, are being broadcast from the reserve until June 12, while there is much online and on the Red Button, too.

Minsmere is one of the richest areas for wildlife in Britain.

Its best known feature is probably the Scrape, just behind the sea wall, which provides a habitat for a wide variety of waders, gulls and terns.

It is this area that was one of the first places in Britain

to see avocets – which now feature in the RSPB’s badge – breeding back in the late 40s.

They are now joined on the Scrape by a wide variety of breeding and passage species – and even a few escapees from private collections (flamingos have found it an attractive place to spend the summer).

Minsmere also has hundreds of acres of reedbeds which are home to rarities like bitterns, marsh harriers, and bearded tits as well as more common birds like herons, mute swans, various species of duck and cormorants. There are also many acres of woodland and the RSPB reserve is next to the National Trust’s Dunwich Heath reserve which is home to a wide variety of heathland species.

While Minsmere is mainly known for its birds, the reserve is also home to important populations of mammals, reptiles, insects and amphibians – not to mention a huge variety of plants and trees. It has one of the largest red deer herds in the country, a herd which was controversially culled in the winter because its numbers were threatening to damage fragile habitats.

Extra camera hides have been installed at the reserve and a temporary wooden studio has been built on the top of Whin Hill overlooking the Island Mere with views towards Eastbridge.

Michaela says: ‘We have a chance to focus on wildlife that we haven’t before such as avocets and terns, and our quest is to capture a booming bittern. That would be something!’

For the past three years it was broadcast from the YnysHir reserve in west Wales and before then it came from Pensthorpe, near Fakenham.

Michaela took over presenting Springwatch from Kate Humble in 2011 and reckons the presenting team is very close. ‘Well, I have known Chris for years, we grew up together. I think the chemistry between us is just right, we are genuinely fond of each other and support each other.

‘There is always something naughty happening - Chris likes to get in his song titles somewhere in his commentary and there is always one animal that gets viewers going – a bearded tit or something with a bit of innuendo. We can get a bit silly!’

She continues: ‘We usually have some disaster, too. Last year a snake ate our chicks and I was devastated. Chris, of course, was far more rational. But the viewers were with me!’

She admits that the filming schedule is intense, saying: ‘As it is a live show, it is very full on and you are never too

sure what will happen. I start about 7.30am and we finish about 10pm.

‘So there isn’t always that much time to explore an area but I do like to get out and about – running is a great way of seeing places. And I like to get out on my bike, too.’

She says: ‘I haven’t been to Minsmere for about 20 years so it will be great to get to know the area again.’

Michaela, now in her mid 40s, was born in Surrey and was a very keen dancer when she was young. She has spoken at length about her battle with anorexia when younger, blaming a change in her family’s circumstances. Her father lost his job and money became an issue for the family, with Michaela feeling the strain.

Now she is very keen on keeping fit and enjoys running, yoga and pilates. ‘And I still dance,’ she says.

She became a household favourite through children’s television, presenting The Wide Awake Club from 1986 and Wacaday, and also hosted, with Pete Waterman, the late night cult show, The Hitman and Her. In the 90s, she moved into wildlife presenting and has fronted shows such as The Really Wild Show, The Elephant Diaries, and was a regular of the top BBC1 series, Countryfile, for several years.

Michaela has been based in South Africa since 2002, moving there to be with her partner, Nick Chevalier, a cameraman and producer. He has three grown up children from a previous relationship, Jade and twins Tom and Sam. And they both have one son, Ollie, in 2006.

Indeed, Michaela recently appeared on the hit ITV series, Big Star’s Little Star, hosted by Stephen Mulhern, with Ollie.

‘It was hilarious, we really enjoyed it,’ she says.

She enjoys the lifestyle in Cape Town, and obviously loves the wildlife opportunities. ‘I am very lucky as I do get to travel. I come back to Britain often so I have two very different habitats with very different wildlife to enjoy.’

Somewhat surprisingly, she doesn’t have a real menagerie at home. ‘It is because we both travel so it is hard to have many animals. We have a 14-year-old Jack Russell and a very friendly mongoose!’

After the show Michaela, ever one with itchy feet, is planning a trip with Nick and Ollie. ‘We’re going to British Columbia – I want to show them that there is great wildlife, serious stuff, away from South Africa!’

NICKY’S NEW DAWN Norfolk has a new Breakfast presenter to wake up to. Emma Outten went to BBC Radio Norfolk at The Forum in Norwich for a morning meeting with Nicky Price

NICKY PRICE

N

icky Price’s first day as breakfast presenter of BBC Radio Norfolk was a rollercoaster ride, to say the least.

News broke the day before that Chris Hughton had been dismissed as manager of Norwich City, and replaced by Neil Adams. As Norfolk stories go they don’t get much bigger, and, suffice to say, Nicky only got three hours sleep in preparation for her 6.30am start!

Thankfully for Nicky, sport is her thing (she’s a big fan of sport both in Norfolk and Worcester, where she’s from) and in her 14 years as a broadcaster she has presented many sporting programmes, including ones on the Commonwealth Games and the Paralympics.

Getting up at the crack of dawn doesn’t daunt her either, as she was the voice of news and sport at Breakfast time, and stand-in presenter for Chris Goreham, for half a decade.

‘It’s been great fun, standing in for Chris, and I’ve been a voice on the programme for quite a few years so hopefully for the listener it’s not going to be a huge change,’ says Nicky, sitting in one of the BBC studios at The Forum, Norwich. The former Drivetime presenter knows her audience: ‘You know which stories people are going to call in about; care about.’

She has lived in Norfolk for nearly 20 years, thanks to a very welcoming Open Day at the University of East Anglia.

‘I’d never been to Norwich, or East Anglia,’ recalls Nicky.

‘I came on a very long train journey with my mum and I absolutely loved it.

‘There was something about UEA – the course was right but it was much more than the course, it was about the welcome.’

The annual inter-school sports competition, the Ziggurat Challenge, appealed to her team spirit and sporty side, plus, as she was ‘fairly obsessed with radio’, she got involved with the UEA student radio station, Livewire.

She produced a sports show in the first year (‘we used to send a reporter to Carrow Road; to North Walsham Rugby Club’) and presented the show in the second. ‘I really loved that.’

Nicky went on to do a broadcast journalism postgraduate course at the University of Central Lancashire, before returning to Norfolk. ‘I still had friends from university here and wanted to come back,’ she says. Radio Norfolk beckoned. ‘I did work experience, a job came up and I’ve been here ever since.’

Fourteen years on, the 37-year-old has become one of Norfolk’s best-known presenters and yet she feels honoured to be named the new breakfast presenter. Luckily, she is very much a morning person. ‘I’d much rather work early in the morning than late at night.’

Nicky rises at 3.50am and even finds time to have a proper breakfast. ‘I try

and treat it as if it’s getting up at 7 or 8; as if it’s a normal routine.’

She arrives at the studio at 4.45pm, although she conjectures: ‘If we all arrived at 6.29 in the morning we could go on air with a programme!’

She adds: ‘I live just a mile from the studio which is good, particularly in snow when the county shuts down!’

At such times, the Breakfast show comes into its own.

She agrees. ‘What we say on the radio really can affect what people do in the next few hours of their life.

‘In the morning you could be the first voice people hear.

You need to give them everything they need to know to start their day.’

Nicky normally finishes her shift around 1pm, but she is not one to sit on her sofa all afternoon. ‘One thing that is very important to me is exercise,’ says the fitness fan, who is a netball player at heart.

‘I like to go swimming, go to the gym; go to a fitness class - that kind of thing,’ she says. ‘I’m a member of a gym in Norwich and also I’ve started going to fitness classes with some friends in the evening - we are doing a boot camp in the summer.’

That’s not all Nicky will be doing, as she is volunteering for this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She’s also going to be a bridesmaid at a wedding in Worcestershire so a busy few months lie ahead!

‘One other unusual thing is I play in a cribbage team,’ announces Nicky. ‘It was an idea in a pub one day!’

She tends to go to bed around 8.30pm, although a social life isn’t completely out of the question. ‘If I’m going out in the evening I’ll have a little nap in the afternoon.

‘As I’ve done it for so long, my body can cope with less sleep but you have to make it up the next day,’ notes Nicky.

‘You just have to listen to what’s your body is telling you because you have to be at your best at half six in the morning.’

Does she ever stretch bedtime to a little later? ‘I’ve treated myself to a trip to the theatre sometimes, which is a very late night, but you have to make sure you park your car in such a place that you get straight home!’

So where are we likely to find Nicky at weekends? ‘Carrow Road on a Saturday,’ is the emphatic reply.

Following that she’s likely to be found somewhere near water, on the Broads (particularly Whitlingham) or on the coast. ‘It’s a treat to live somewhere where you can get to the coast in half an hour.’

And she adds: ‘One thing I want to do on the programme is get out a bit more myself.’ So can this lark (as opposed to night owl) imagine doing another half a decade of dawn starts? No question.

‘I’d love to.’

hen a small group of Southwold folk met early last year to bounce around the idea of an arts festival in the coastal town, one wonders if they knew they would be welcoming the likes of the surprisingly artistic Andrew Marr 18 months down the line.

The inaugural Southwold Arts Festival is due to start at the end of this month, with Adnams as sponsor and Emma Freud OBE as patron - who will open the Festival with a street event on June 28.

Emma says: ‘My favourite town already has everything that makes life wonderful: a literary festival, a summer theatre, the best fish finger rolls in the UK (at Suzie’s Beach Cafe), and now its own Arts Festival - a huge celebration of everything that is artistically fabulous in our community. It’s exactly what Southwold deserves and I am really thrilled to have been asked to be the Festival patron.’

The first concert performance will be at St Edmunds Church and will feature the internationally renowned Opera Babes, made up of Karen England and local girl Rebecca Knight, two women who have come a long way from busking in Covent Garden in 2001!

says: ‘I’m absolutely over the moon to be involved with the inaugural Southwold Arts Festival. I live locally and am often on the beach or the pier with my family and am really looking forward to singing in the fabulous St Edmunds Church.’

On June 29, there will be a folk concert at St Edmunds Hall featuring Vin Garbutt, the so-called Teeside Troubadour and winner of the BBC Folk Award for Best Live Act. Also that day, there will be a special Festival Songs of Praise with songs and hymns chosen by each of the Festival artists.

Then a full house is expected for the evening with broadcaster and political journalist Andrew Marr, who will provide a talk about his life and sign copies of his recent book, A Short Book About Drawing.

There will be a range of afternoon events including a performance by the well known writer and broadcaster Janet Gershlick who has a home in Southwold, and there will be a musical revue celebrating the life of Noel Coward from the Must Close Saturday Company, which includes Helen McDermott best remembered for her long career with Anglia Television, and the highly respected poet George Szirtes will also be providing a talk and answering questions.

programme that will have wide appeal and there will be a special children’s show hosted by the popular children’s entertainer and songwriter Nick Cope. The highly regarded Common Ground Theatre Company will bring their premiere production of Mary Shelley and the Curse of Frankenstein to the Festival, plus local pianist and composer Nathan Williamson will provide a diverse programme.

And, building on the success of the Art Exhibition in the town last year, the 2014 exhibition will include some of the most memorable images of the town and will not only be open throughout the festival week but for a month in total. Organisers have managed to secure some very important pictures including some of the best original paintings by local artists Katherine Hamilton and Mary Gundry and also rare pictures by John Piper, Tessa Newcombe and Henry Davy.

Two of the highlights of the Festival will be concerts by the classical violinist Tasmin Little on July 2, who was awarded an OBE for her services to music in 2012 and whose album Elgar: Violin Concerto, won the critics award at the Classic Brit Awards; and the finale concert, on July 5, will be hosted by Digby Fairweather’s Half Dozen with blues singers Val Wiseman.

Chairman of the Festival planning team, Simon Tobin, concludes: ‘This new Festival for Southwold will be a huge benefit for the town.’ He adds: ‘As well as international artists and inspirational theatre throughout the week there will be something to appeal to everyone. We are delighted that there has been such a positive response to this exciting new project,’ he adds.

LATITUDE’S LINING UP ANOTHER AWARD-WINNER It won Line-Up of the Year at the UK Festival Awards 2013, so can Latitude win similar plaudits on the strength of next month’s lineup? Festival ‘veteran’ Emma Outten thinks so!

he awards just keep coming for Latitude Festival. Already lauded as a family friendly festival, last year it was named LineUp of the Year at the UK Festival Awards. It certainly helps that it’s so much more than a music festival – you could easily go for the comedy alone, although it’s the musicians who tend to take the headlines.

Taking place from July 17 to 20 in the grounds of Henham Park, the line-up sounds good, with Irish indie rockers Two Door Cinema Club headlining at the Obelisk Arena on the Friday – not only will it be their first festival headline appearance, it’s their one and only UK show of 2014.

Saturday’s headliner is former Blur front man and Britpop legend Damon Albarn (did you know it’s 20 years since Britpop burst onto the music scene? And did you also know his first ever gig was supporting Nik Kershaw at Ipswich Gaumont!?).

This will be a career-spanning performance and follows the release of his solo album Everyday Robots. The Grammy Award winner singer songwriter, producer and composer is no stranger to Latitude, having appeared in 2007 as part of the super-group The Good, The Bad & The Queen, but will be his first ever festival performance as a solo artist.

The third and final headline act is American rock duo The Black Keys, and this will be their first ever UK festival headline performance.

Melvin Benn, founder and creator of Latitude, is confident that this is going to be the best Latitude yet: ‘This year sees Latitude return for its ninth edition, with a sensational and diverse bill that once again really offers something for everyone. We’re incredibly pleased to announce The Black Keys as headliners.’

The support acts at the Obelisk promise to be just as headturning. Returning will be Britpop legends James, who also went down well with the Thetford Forest Live crowd last year. ‘We love playing Latitude because it embraces creativity in all its many faces; not just a dole queue of bands. On the Sunday look out for Haim, the Californian sister trio who have taken the UK by storm, following an outstanding appearance on The Jools Holland Show (not to mention the Nick Rayne’s LCR at the UEA recently).

The partnership with BBC Radio 6 Music continues for another year, and headlining on that stage are Scottish quintet Mogwai, Scandinavian collaboration Röyksopp and Robyn (performing in a joint-appearance as part of their Do It Again 2014 tour) and Swedish singer-songwriter Lykke Li. Plus I must mention Daryl Hall and John Oates, fresh from their induction into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame! I Can’t Go For That? Yes, I can!

Latitude provides the best in new, upcoming and niche music, so if this is your thing, then the i Arena is the place for you. Headliners this year are Cass McCombs, Julia Holter and Berlin-based contemporary composer Nils Frahm.

And if you really want the nod about who’s tipped to be the ‘next best thing’, The Lake Stage will be the first place festival goers can see the stars of the future, handpicked by BBC Radio One DJ and broadcaster Huw Stephens. (Previous artists who have graced the stage before going on to win awards or headline their own shows include the brilliant Bombay Bicycle Club, who will be at the Obelisk just before Damon Albarn this year). Headlining the Lake Stage this year will be Bondax, Catfish and the Bottlemen, and Luke Sital Singh.

ete Goodrum, writer, advertising expert, marketing consultant and best-selling local author, is as busy as ever. His latest book, Norfolk Broads: The Biography has just been published

Pete, this is your third book in a little over three years. You’re seldom out of the local best seller charts. This is a prolific output!

Yes, I guess you could say that. It’s been a busy time.

My last two books were very much about Norwich, and this one is a rather wider subject, in that it tells the story of the Norfolk Broads.

It certainly does. You cover their entire history.

I’ve tried to. My publishers were anxious for me to write a ‘history of’ rather than a ‘guide to’ the Broads.

This book is very much about how the Broads came into being, and their subsequent development into the wonderful waterways they are today.

And when it comes to their origins, we now know that they are ‘man made’.

We do. The truth is that their beginnings as peat diggings were forgotten, for centuries. It was well into the 20th century before it was proved that excavating peat for fuel was the reason that the Norfolk landscape had these huge areas that became flooded, resulting in the Broads.

You’ve written a lot about the balance between man and nature on the Broads.

I really wanted to explore that. We humans have developed the area, and used it for business, agriculture and of course tourism. But equally there has been an enormous amount of work put in to conserving the landscape. There’s a massive irony in that the area we’ve protected, to retain its natural aspects, was created by man in the first place.

Your book contains a lot of social history.

Yes. From the Dark Ages on there was a steady development of society and to look at how we became more industrialised, which fuelled the need for holidays, was fascinating. I’m very patriotic about Norfolk and always keen to remind people just how innovative the county has been. World class businesses have been born here and when it comes to tourism we’ve led the world.

The Broads are universally known as a great place to relax.

We’ve also led the world in conservation and again, world class people have been involved with strategies to protect the area.

You must have done a considerable amount of research for this pretty definitive history.

I did. It was engrossing. The story of the Broads takes in art, culture, tourism, wildlife, agriculture, architecture, boats and boatbuilding. That’s without the railways and the part they played, the world wars and the great shifts in society that happened after 1945. I’ve tried to paint a picture that contains all those elements, so yes, there was a lot of research to do!

Would you say that the Broads are unique?

It’s always so dangerous to use that word ‘unique’. But, hundreds of miles of navigable waterways, through a wonderful landscape, taking in villages and countryside is pretty special. Add to that the fact that the Broads themselves were man made in ancient times, and then recovered for both commercial and leisure use. The brilliant conservation work done here. The outstanding achievements in tourism and leisure. All the feats of engineering achieved here. And then, show somebody a picture of a yacht sail and a windmill, and wherever they are in the world they’ll say, The Norfolk Broads. I’ll stick my neck out. That has to be unique doesn’t it?

In the Heart of the Broads A Victorian vicarage set in a delightful Broadland village – who could want more? asks Sarah Hardy

he Old Vicarage at Hoveton is a rare opportunity indeed.

Built in 1881, it has only come on to the open market three times in its illustrious history. The present owners have lived there since 1997 and have lavished much care and attention on it, creating a warm and welcoming home that still has a noble and handsome feel to it.

The ground floor also boasts a gorgeous drawing room, dominated by a large bay window and with a marble fireplace. ‘The drawing room is wonderfully elegant and we use it when we have company. It’s very cosy with the open fire in winter,’ say the owners.

An Action-Packed Month Our gardening writer Ellen Mary tells us what we should be doing in the garden this month

he month of June brings lots of early light and long, warm evenings. The rise in temperature will mean the garden and vegetable patch will develop in leaps and bounds with continuously colourful displays. This is the month to have your hoe out, ready to stop those weeds in their tracks. It is also the month where your hard work really pays off and you will be munching on your own harvests in no time. It’s the beginning of a satisfyingly productive few months to come.

Garden and Flowers Water your garden more frequently as the soil will dry out quicker. Try and water at the base of the plants, especially if there is a water shortage to help retain moisture. If you haven’t already, install a water butt to ensure you have plenty of your own water for next year.

When your flowers are past their best, dead head your containers, pots, hanging baskets, and borders. Dead heading is necessary to stop your plants from producing seed which will mean they stop flowering. The more you dead head, the more flowers you will enjoy.

Why not try growing your own winter bedding plants from seed? Sow ornamental cabbage from now until July to mix with pansies in the winter.

They look stunning in pots and will bring you some much needed colour in the cooler months. Always think ahead when gardening!

After a mild winter expect a few more pests than usual. Protect your lilies and hostas, along with other tasty plants, from slugs, snails and aphids. Nematodes are a pet, child and wildlife friendly way to control slugs and snails. Try to keep away from pesticides by spraying soapy water on greenfly or other aphids to keep them off your lovely plants.

Jobs For JUNE Fruit and Vegetables Keep on sowing your lettuce, spring onions and radishes. If you sow seeds every week you will be eating your own salad for many months rather than all in one batch. If you only have space for a window box, choose the ‘cut and come again’ salad leaves which are easy to grow in small spaces and will supply you with plenty of salad throughout the summer.

There are so many seeds to be sown now you can almost take your pick.

You can sow seeds in egg cartons, toilet roll holders, old packaging – almost anything! Plenty can be grown in small, urban spaces or if you are lucky enough to have a large garden or allotment, let your imagination run riot If you are growing a cordon (tall) variety of tomato, pinch off the side shoots to encourage more fruits. Pinch where the leaf shoot joins the main stem, but don’t pinch off a flower shoot. You can grow tomatoes in hanging baskets if you choose the ‘tumbling’ variety.

Wildlife Gardening Tadpoles will be developing their frog legs and starting to emerge from the water to the sides of your pond or pond bucket. They are particularly open to predators at this stage, so make sure you have plenty of cover for them to hide under. Good marginal plants are ideal and widely available.

Soak sultanas, raisins and currants overnight to soften them ready for feeding the birds in the morning. Don’t leave out whole peanuts as baby birds may choke on them. Crush them up and add some pear or apple.

Keep your bird feeders covered over to protect them from larger birds, rodents and predators.

If you are eager to get to a garden centre or nursery, make a list of wildlife friendly plants so you can factor them in to your plans. Butterflies love heavily scented plants like Phlox or Buddleia and bees love Foxgloves and Penstemon.

M E TH O D First marinate the chicken breasts in the lemon juice, zest, honey and oil (this is best done 24 hours in advance).

Once marinated, remove from the mixture and place skin side down on a very hot griddle pan, no oil is needed in the pan as the chicken will already be coated in oil as prepared above.

Once the skin is coloured place skin side up on a lightly greased baking tray and cook in the oven for 20-25 minutes, at 1800C. 5 minutes before the chicken is cooked, place the cherry tomatoes onto the same tray and cook.

For the polenta, bring 1 pint of water to the boil, whisk in the uncooked polenta, turn down to a low heat and cook for a further 20 minutes, stirring every couple of minutes. Once cooked, remove from the heat, season with salt and pepper, then mix in the butter and grated parmesan.

For the sweet chilli dressing, finely chop the chillies and garlic then combine the honey, oil, chopped parsley and coriander together.

To serve, place the polenta into a bowl, rest the chicken breast on top along with the cherry tomatoes and dress with the sweet chilli dressing and finally garnish with some dressed salad leaves.

In a large mixing bowl or a mixer, combine the flour, caster sugar, baking powder and salt.

Break the eggs into a bowl, add the lemon juice, lemon zest and caster sugar. Whisk the mix until the ingredients are all well combined.

Cut the butter into small pieces, and combine it, using your hand, until it makes a sandy type of texture. Add the eggs to form a dough. Do not overwork. Rest for at least 3 hours.

Add the double cream and whisk again. Pour the filling into the cooled baked pastry case almost to the top and baked for 35 to 40 minutes at 150oC or until just set but with a slight wobble in the middle.

400g of plain flour 200g of caster sugar 200g of unsalted butter 1 pinch of table salt 1 /2 tsp of baking powder 2 small eggs

For the lemon mix filling Juice from 5 lemons 180g of caster sugar Zest from 5 lemons 5 medium eggs 125ml of double cream

Once rested, roll out the pastry to 3mm-5mm thickness and line a tart tin with it. Cover with baking parchment paper and fill with baking beans. Cook in an oven at 200°C for about 15 minutes. Cool, then remove the beans.

Chill and cut into portions or use a pastry cutter to remove the crust if you don’t want it.

Garnish with dry candied lemon slices or a light dusting of icing sugar.

xperts are predicting another long hot summer this year, enticing people out

into their own gardens, and those of the pubs and restaurants around our beautiful region. We all love the thought of dining outside at the first glimpse of sunshine, and quickly dust off and oil the little wobbly wheels of the barbeque before dragging it out of the garage, knocking everything over in its path. But is there a perfect beverage to enjoy al fresco, whether it is with a cremated sausage or a fresh Cromer crab salad?

The great British weather does not give us a very long summer so I, for one, want to make the most of it. As soon as the weather hits 20 degrees, the shorts are on and I’m off in search of a beer garden!

But upon entering a pub or restaurant, my habits seem to change drastically from those of the colder months.

A local real ale turns into a refreshing chilled cider. And that glass of red or richer white wine becomes a crisp Sauvignon or light Prosecco. Occasionally, despite it not tasting nice enough for the other eight months of the year, the pretty colours and bundles of fresh mint poking out of a glass make me want a Pimm’s!

This isn’t rocket science; in warmer weather, of course we want something refreshing rather than warming and comforting. The company you are with will also impact on what you are drinking.

That Pimm’s and lemonade shared amongst friends looks and feels even more impressive when being poured out of an elegant glass jug as fruit spills in to the glass below.

In our Courtyard Garden at The Assembly House we love serving sparkling wines. An Afternoon Tea can’t help but be enhanced by that cold bottle of fizz being plunged in and out of a silver bucket of icy water.

The perfect tipple for me, though, has to be a cold and refreshing, but elegant rosé. If just enjoying a drink in the sun without food then, of course, Pimm’s, a cold Pilsner or a glass of fizz will do a fantastic job. But if you are spending your pennies on something nice to eat, then as always why not enhance it with a glass of something nice to drink.

The kind of dishes that appear on al fresco menus tend to be lighter and angled towards the lighter whites and rosés anyway, and rarely match well with heavy reds. At The House we provide a separate menu for dining outside, with what we believe are the best dishes to enjoy under the sun.

Rosé no longer has the stigma of that cheap tasting, sugary, pink liquor only tolerated on a cheap summer’s holiday to Majorca. It now has a much better reputation, and there are some stunning rosés available at great value. They have come full circle and are even now considered fashionable in many wine lovers’ eyes.

Even Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie produce their own rosé at their holiday retreat in Provence. It’s not cheap, and sells out instantly - not surprisingly.

The reason for its modern popularity is probably the move away from the sweeter sickly stuff, like the majority of white Zinfandels coming out of California, to rosés that are drier and rounder in flavour with less residual sugar. The labelling and bottling has also become more elegant and looks much more appealing both on the supermarket shelves and the back bar displays.

If looking for something dry, maybe to pair with charcuterie meats, olives and good bread, then go for something from Provence, Bordeaux or Navarra in northern Spain. With some fresh seasonal shellfish from our bountiful regional coastlines, try a rosé from Chile, Australia or New Zealand where an off dry sweetness will likely be found.

The summer is the perfect time to enjoy a great rosé and there is something exciting about finding a great one and enjoying it icy cold with friends under the afternoon sun.

The ‘Large Black’ Breed

BLACK This month, food writer Andy Newman finds a fifth of the UK’s stock of a rare breed pig in one field in Norfolk, and Roger Hickman keeps it simple to bring out its wonderful flavour

W

e hear much about rare breeds nowadays, perhaps so much that we have lost sight of what that phrase actually means. But as I bump down a muddy track near Oxborough Hall in west Norfolk in Robert Simonds’ 4x4, the emerging sight of a field full of completely black pigs is striking.

But what really hits home is that I am looking at around a fifth of Britain’s remaining stock of what a hundred years ago was one of Britain’s most common pig varieties. Of the 450,000 or so sows in the country, just 300 are Large Blacks – and 60 of those are happily ensconced in the field before me.

With ‘lop’ ears and long, deep bodies, the Large Black is the UK’s only all black pig. Extremely docile and very hardy, it is ideally suited to outdoor rearing. The breed originates from the Old English Hog, established in the 16th and 17th centuries.

In the early part of the 20th century, Large Blacks were widely distributed throughout the country, especially in the

south-west and East Anglia. So successful was the breed that at the Royal Show in 1919, they outnumbered all other breeds in the show ring.

As so often happens in food, misunderstanding of a healthy eating ‘fad’ led to their decline. Healthy eating campaigners propagating the rather simplistic ‘lean is better’ dogma, meant that breeders came under pressure to produce leaner meat.

Of course, food-lovers know that to produce a tasty, moist piece of meat, the presence of fat in the cooking process is a necessity. You don’t have to eat the fat once it’s cooked – but try to produce a very lean piece of pork, and you will most likely end up with a dry, bland lump of meat on your plate.

You only need to taste pork from Robert Simonds’ Scotts Field Pork herd to realise how true this is. It has a much more intense flavour, and the presence of intra-muscular fat lends the meat a beautiful moistness.

Norfolk Produce

Pork

Robert is a man with a passion for both his animals, and the delicious product they become. Born to a farming family in Suffolk, he was just 14 when the family farm was sold. But by then agriculture was in his blood, and he was determined to make it his life.

Of course, that is much more difficult when you no longer have any land, and the career path can be chequered in such circumstances. Robert ended up working on other people’s farms in the UK and in New Zealand, before finding his way to agricultural college in Cirencester.

The end of his course coincided with a boom in outdoor pig production, presenting an opportunity for ‘first generation’, landless farmers to pursue a career. This is exactly what Robert did, becoming a contract farmer. But as any ‘wage slave’ will tell you, it’s not the same when you are doing it for someone else. So 10 years ago he decided to take the plunge and set out on his own.

Wanting to follow the example of his great grandfather Dr Andrew Kay, who kept a herd of pedigree Large Blacks at Blakeney during the 1920s, Robert set about seeking his first sows – and found them on a prison farm in Lincolnshire.

With those two sows, kept at the bottom of his garden, Scotts Field Pork was born.

As well as keeping the rare breed alive (and producing excellent pork into the bargain), Robert’s operation is true sustainable farming at its best. He raises his pigs as a tenant on a 20 acre tranche of a larger 150 acre farm, and each year moves to a different part of the farm. This allows for traditional rotation, returns muck to the soil, and provide mutual benefit to Robert and his landlord.

This is part of the ethos of Scotts Field, which is an important part of the brand: entirely free-range, a family business operating on a small scale, everything sourced and supplied locally, and a very small supply chain.

With around 60 sows, he is already the biggest producer in the country of Large Blacks, and plans to increase his herd to around 100; still small scale, but a vital cog in the preservation of this truly rare breed.

RECIPE Roger Hickman’s Pork Fillet with Chorizo, Carrots, Red Onion and Carrot Purée serves FOUR

INGR E DI E NTS 2 Scotts Field pork fillets, 2 small cooking chorizos, 2 red onions, 12 baby carrots, 3 large carrots, orange juice, a few inner leaves of spring cabbage, 250ml veal or chicken stock, rapeseed oil, a knob of butter

Trim the pork fillets and season them with salt and pepper.

Heat some rapeseed oil in an oven-proof frying pan and seal the fillets on all sides. Then put in the oven at 180°C for four to five minutes, depending on the thickness of the fillet. It is important that you don’t overcook the meat, as it is very lean and will dry out very quickly. Do not be scared of serving pork slightly pink. Remove from the oven and leave to rest for a couple of minutes.

Dice the chorizo and fry in a little rapeseed oil. When they are done, remove with a slotted spoon, reserving the oil.

Slice the onions into eight 5mm thick slices. Put a little oil into a roasting pan, and then place the slices in the pan.

Sprinkle with a little salt, and then cover with greaseproof paper. Now lay another roasting pan over the top – this will stop the centres of the slices springing out as they cook.

Roast in the oven at 180°C for ten minutes.

Peel the baby carrots and roast in a frying pan with a knob of butter until each side is coloured. The carrot should now be cooked through – if it isn’t (for example if the carrots are slightly thicker), finish off in the oven for a couple of minutes.

To make the carrot purée, peel and finely chop the large carrots. Put them in a pan with just enough orange juice to cover them. Lay some greaseproof paper over the top, and gently simmer until all of the liquid has evaporated. Blitz in a food processor, pass through a sieve, and adjust the seasoning.

Wilt the spring cabbage leaves in a pan with two tablespoons each of butter and water, for just 30 seconds.

To make the jus, reduce the stock by a half, and then split with a little of the chorizo oil.

The Boathouse, in our magical Broads, is now open for business, offering delicious food in stunning surroundings, discovers Sarah Hardy

he Boathouse, which opened in late April,

is a welcome addition to the burgeoning foodie scene in the Broads. The sister to the nearby and well-established Waterside, it stands proudly on Ormesby Broad, offering unsurpassed views over the open waters.

It has been the brainchild of Michael Minors, who made his career as managing director of Norwich-based insurance broker Hugh J Boswell, and his wife Belinda, who have spent two years and £2 million developing the former Eel’s Foot pub into a wedding venue, restaurant, and bar, which also offers accommodation and three lodges! So, yes, it is quite an ambitious project.

Michael and his team, which includes local architect William Glover, have used the original building and added on several new areas and landscaped the grounds. But they have retained the building’s feel and features, and reflected its natural setting.

Inside it is contemporary, with a relaxed vibe. Colours are greens, greys, blues, with splashes of a warm red. There is exposed brickwork, open fires, pine floorboards and a mismatch of chairs, tables and sofas, all creating an attractive eclectic atmosphere. There are books and magazines, including Places&Faces®, to browse through.

There is a large bar, serving a good selection of wines, beers, spirits and soft drinks, including its own wine label and several cask beers.

Three signature brews, sourced from Wolf Brewery in Attleborough, are Boathouse Bitter, Gentleman Jim and Eel’s Foot.

There is also a separate restaurant area, where one wall pays homage to the pub’s history, plus plenty of tables and chairs outside to soak up those marvellous views.

Food served at lunch times includes several pub classics such as fish and chips, sausage and mash, a pie of the day, pasta and burger choices. Plus sandwiches, baguettes, and salads. There is also a thoughtful children’s menu.

In the evening, it steps up a notch, with more fine dining options on offer. The menu is short and seasonal – with much use made of local supplies - and is overseen by Simon Rogers, who also runs the kitchens at The Waterside.

So what did we opt for? Well, my husband and I visited early one Saturday evening and the place was buzzing, as it has been since it opened.

We bagged table 15 in the bar which is a goodie. Right in the window, it overlooks the Broad – and is very near the bar, of course!

As we chatted over the day’s events and looked through the menu, I had a glass of the Boathouse’s own rosé and my husband tried the Boathouse Bitter. Both were very welcome!

I started with a simply divine asparagus dish with Parma ham and juicy cherry vine tomatoes which was a big hit while Himself had a much appreciated goat’s cheese and beetroot salad.

As a main course, I opted for chargrilled chicken with spring onion, pea and woodland mushroom risotto with watercress pesto at £13.95. It was a healthy portion and bursting with flavour. He chose fillet of sea bass, roast cherry vine tomatoes, fondant potato, seasonal greens and beurre blanc sauce at £14.95. This was light and flavoursome - I know as I had a very decent fork full!

Other options included sea trout, belly of pork and the 8oz sirloin steak, with all the trimmings, caught my eye! Next time!

Puddings are always a real treat and the Boathouse doesn’t disappoint. I had a very yummy crème brulee with raspberries and strawberries while my husband had a great apple crumble with a dollop of vanilla ice cream, so was basically in heaven!

All the dishes are very attractively served on white china, and the service is very friendly, with the staff looking smart in their black uniforms.

As the weather continues to improve, it will be wonderful to both eat and drink outside, making the most of this unique setting.

You can keep an eye out for wildlife – the birdlife is superb and the range of butterflies at this time of year is great, too. And, as there’s an impressive children’s play area, your little treasures will be kept very busy as you relax and appreciate just how lucky we are in this region!

Tuddenham Mill near Newmarket was the perfect place for me and my friend to catch up over dinner, what with us living in Norfolk and Hertfordshire respectively. It was also her father’s favourite restaurant, so our visit turned out to have had extra resonance.

G

oing to the Fritton Arms felt like many happy returns. The atmosphere, ambience and food could hardly be better, and we were there just days after it opened. Looks like the Somerleyton Estate has got a winner on its hands.

Fritton Lake has always been special. As a reporter on the Yarmouth Mercury in the 70s, I covered the big civil engineering development when a shallow valley was created opening up the view and subtly drawing visitors towards the waterside. Later with our children it was a treat to have a family season ticket and make the most of this delightful spot, its sheer beauty and tranquillity and the adventure playground.

But we hadn’t been back for years, during which time the former manager’s house at the entrance had become a hotel and restaurant. Last year Lord Somerleyton, Hugh Crossley, decided to take back both Fritton House and The Duke’s Head, Somerleyton, from outside management and re-launch them himself. After closure The Duke’s was back in action earlier this year while Fritton House totally re-emerged as the Fritton Arms on April 1.

So it was with real anticipation that we drove down the short tree-lined approach road from the main A143 towards the Fritton Arms with its immediately welcoming homely feel thanks to the various dining areas. Imagine the further joy when we were shown into what, in a previous life, had been for us the old cafe area where many a pot of tea, cake and ice cream had been

consumed. Now there’s a restful colour scheme, candles and dimmed lights, an assortment of chairs and tables creating just the right feel of relaxation, superb landscapes from Gorleston artist Geoff Chatten and, above all, a log fire.

Oh let’s not forget the food, though it was hard to concentrate with the view of the park from the window and a muntjac deer in the distance! It really is a good sign when it is hard to make your mind up and the main menu and specials board offered plenty of variety without overwhelming, a key ingredient being the fact that the 5000 acre Somerleyton Estate can provide both produce and its own herd of Welsh Black cattle. You don’t get much more local than that!

We started with a very acceptable goat’s cheese and black pepper mousse with roasted beetroot and herb oil for my wife while I went for an up-market version of ham, egg and chips – pressed ham hock with a quail Scotch egg and delicate stick-like fries which were all very tasty. As we awaited its arrival the young and attentive staff had brought us herb bread with a perfect crust.

This was a step up from pub grub but still in keeping with the informality. For main I selected a simply melt-in-the-mouth slow braised belly pork on champ mash with Savoy cabbage, honey and thyme roasted carrots and a cider jus which gave off such an appetising aroma; my wife tried the local beef steak with an oriental marinade, Asian vegetables and tempura prawns which got a thumbs up.

would be available next time. That’s the kind of response I like!

And here’s a final encouragement. After all these years Fritton Lake has totally changed from being a paid attraction. The country park is now free and the emphasis is on the outdoor adventure centre from which you can hire boats, bikes and take part in a range of sporty activities including open water swimming. That makes the Fritton Arms a pub restaurant with the biggest grounds and lake you could possibly imagine. Just how attractive is that? lot and in this case it was the inclusion of hazelnuts and the serving of salted caramel ice-cream. Trust me it was every bit as delicious as it sounds!

By this time the moon had risen between the trees. Clearly this won’t be available every night but was an added bonus for us. We moved over to comfy chairs by the fire to round off with coffee (loving the cute tiny milk bottle which came with it) and frankly were reluctant to leave.

The executive chef is Stuart Pegg and his team includes colleagues who are also trained in butchery, so they know exactly what they are doing. Before leaving we chatted with manager Ben Davenport who, like Stuart, is in overall charge of both the Duke’s Head and Fritton. Originally from Lowestoft he has a wealth of experience, including running a highly successful pub in Wiltshire which attracted a coveted Michelin star. But the lure of Suffolk and the challenge of Somerleyton were too great to resist.

Ben outlined his philosophy of creating a relaxed, friendly (that most certainly includes families and dogs) unpretentious atmosphere with informal good food. It was a joy to share his vision and enthusiasm especially when all of that had been so obviously demonstrated. My only slight criticism – and the Fritton Arms isn’t by any means alone in this – was that clearly it has an excellent wine list but, as a tee-totaller, failed to show similar imagination for the soft drinker. And I bet that’s already been put right; Ben was straight on the case saying I was the second person who’d asked for elderflower and promising it

needed a bigger doughnut. My God I needed a bigger doughnut but where, on one of the two days in the year that all doughnut shops are shut, did I have a cat in hell’s chance of finding one? If I could not find one, how could I stop the water pouring through the ceiling?

There used to be hardware shops that were manned (and it really was ‘manned’. You would never be served

This pleasure dome had every conceivable item of hardware known to man (ok and to woman, too) but what if you wanted something specific and did not know what it was called?

I would be terrified to ask, for fear of being laughed at by the men in brown coats. Was it a spigot or a widget? Did I want my screws to be self drilling, Phillips or flat head? Did I want a screw at all?

If I needed to attach something to a wall, did I need a wall plug, a sink plug or an ear plug? And weren’t cavity fixings rather rude, especially as hardware stores unashamedly had male and female couplings?

The reality is that every trade and profession has its own secret language intended, I am sure, to perplex and humiliate (rather than enlighten) the uninitiated. Take doctors for instance. Instead of talking of the nearest or furthest part of your anatomy, they refer to bones or tendons being proximal or distal. They also resort to acronyms, especially when they do not want their patients to know what they are talking about. If you look in your notes and read: TATT, TATSP, C2H6O or NFN you might just wonder what message

Barbados Without Breaking The Bank!

Canny Kate Morfoot travels to the Caribbean island of Barbados for a luxurious holiday without a hefty price-tag

B

arbados is home to glitz and glamour; it’s the bedrock of film stars, pop icons and famed celebrities. The place where not only the best rum in the world is made, but also where you can find the trendiest restaurants and most stunning beaches, not to mention outstanding hotels.

But do you need a big bulging wallet to enjoy this ultimate island of the big spenders? I decided to try and find out!

The Club Resort and Spa, located on St James Beach on the West Coast, also known as the Gold Coast, has a rock star location next door to the Sandy Lane Hotel, but at a fraction of the price.

One of only nine all-inclusive hotels on the island, it offers buffet style breakfasts and lunches, a la carte dinners in two of its restaurants and premium drinks, all included. The main reason this hotel hits the mark is that it serves excellent food – fresh fish, meats, fruit, all prepared and served by friendly and attentive staff.

Nestled within five acres of lush tropical gardens, it offers

panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea, three fresh water swimming pools, a gym, free tennis, free water sports, a spa and a salon. You can spend your entire holiday there without leaving and indulge in as much good food, drinks and sports as you like, as well as soaking up the rays.

I was very pleased that I’d packed my running shoes and T-shirts as early morning gym sessions and tennis games meant I could take advantage of the three meals a day on offer!

There’s heaps of entertainment during the day from guided walks, to rum tastings, a cookery school within Enid’s Restaurant and Caribbean dancing classes.

If you do want to explore outside the all-inclusive set-up, then getting around the island is easy, and as cheap as chips.

The yellow ‘Reggae Reggae’ and Blue buses are both speedy and reliable. Paying just two BBD Barbados Dollars (60p), you can do just one stop or take in as many stops as you like.

The nearest town to St James Beach is Holetown: a bustling place, bursting with small independent boutiques and a designer shopping mall, LimeGrove, for more expensive items.

For down-to-earth Holetown, head for the One Love Bar to experience Mount Gay Rum at its best with the locals, then afterwards, take in some sun on Surf Side and join the party set to watch the sun go down.

A hidden gem on the island is Café Bar Carizma, owned by an English couple. It’s based amongst beautiful gardens in the centre of the Chattel Village, Holetown. On Tuesdays and Thursdays they have live music by 1359 and serve the best Spanish tapas.

It’s safe to go out. On Friday nights most people head to Oistins. It’s a popular fishing town on the south coast and is a hub of activity with lots of people and music. Excellent fresh fish, from tuna to marlin, lobster and the local mahi-mahi and flying fish, is cooked in front of you. You can get your fish grilled or fried depending on what you fancy. I headed for Pat’s Grillin’ and Chillin’ where I had a whole Red Snapper and chips costing around BBD 15 (£4.50).

Alex Ferguson had taken his friends to Lonestar, known as ‘The Ivy’ of the Caribbean recently. Next door, with the same view and pretty spectacular fresh seafood, is JuJu’s, a beach bar restaurant without the celebrity prices.

North-West of the island is Speightstown, a magical place with lots of heritage. Pop into Frangipani Art, where you can buy local cards and paintings. And just a short walk towards the Port St Charles, you’ll find some amazing beaches and

can hire sun loungers for 20 Barbados dollars. Further along, you will find the Port St Charles Yacht Club, where you can stop to have lunch and sunbathe on the deck or use their lovely swimming pool.

Another walk takes you to Little Good Harbour, a charming village with one rum bar and several fishing huts where the locals bring in their catches. The Fish Pot restaurant, overlooking the sea, serves premium quality food and is highly recommended.

Head back on the bus to Mullins Beach bar for a sun downer and a final swim in the sea for the day, or stop by at The Colony Club Hotel for half-price cocktails during its happy hour from 5 to 7pm and watch the sunset.

If you’re a member of the National Trust, then don’t forget your membership card as it will give you free access and reduced entry to the fascinating sites managed by the Barbados National Trust. Choose Wildey House or the wonders of nature at the Andromeda Botanic Gardens or see the stunning views of Gun Hill Signal Station.

All the beaches in Barbados are free and accessible to the public, meaning it’s not uncommon to spot the stars swimming in the sea or basking in the sun. Think nothing of dipping in the sparkling waters smack bang outside the hotel of Sandy Lane and swimming into someone you recognise.

Strolling past Sandy Lane’s pink umbrellas and towels, we bumped into friends we know staying at this luxurious $4550 a night hotel. We were kindly invited up to the Lower Terrace for drinks and promptly introduced to the beach bar waiter, as well as Alpha Jackman. Described by the late Michael Winner as ‘a likeable, charming chap,’ I can only assume that’s why he’s so excellent at being Guest Services Manager there and made us feel so welcome, even as non-residents.

After what became a decadent lunch of sushi, grilled fish and lamb, we strolled back along the ocean side. A three minute walk and we were back at The Club Resort and Spa, a world apart from Sandy Lane Hotel, but very much a great holiday hot spot, and just a stone’s throw from the conspicuous wealth prevalent on this magical island.

f Stefan Gurney, Executive Director of the Norwich Business Improvement District, were to take to the Norwich’s Got Talent Stage this summer, what would his talent be?

I only ask because, from this month, Norwich BID will be encouraging us to Head Out, Not Home on a Thursday evening and, new for this year, the free city centre entertainment will be all about showcasing talent.

Anyone who saw the flashmob launch of the new Discover Norwich smartphone app recently, can guess the answer: Stefan would emulate John Belushi in The Blues Brothers and dance to Shake Your Tail Feather! Although the fan of the film wonders: ‘Whether it’s a talent is a very different question.’

Head Out, Not Home is inspired by London’s Covent Garden and will run in partnership with Norwich & Norfolk Community Arts (NORCA), from June 12 to August 28. Sitting in the offices Norwich BID shares with VisitNorwich in Millennium Plain, Stefan explains: ‘Thursday evenings are logical because it’s already got late night shopping.’

Moreover, The Forum will also be organising film nights for the first five Thursdays of Head Out, Not Home – unfortunately for Stefan, his favourite film isn’t a PG so it will not be one of those shown!

Head Out, Not Home is BID’s bid, if you like, to increase the attraction of Norwich city centre as a place to visit, work and live.

Although Norwich is in the top 10 of UK places to shop, the challenge is getting people to stay out beyond 5pm.

Established in November 2012, Norwich BID is run for local businesses by local businesses. Of the businesses who voted, 79 per cent by number (and 91 per cent by rateable value) voted yes to spending £3m, over five years, on initiatives that will make a difference to the vitality of the city centre, such as Norwichristmas.

It raises the money by an annual one per cent levy on the rateable value of business premises over £15,000 within the BID area. Stefan says: ‘We were very keen to support the SME’s – the small and medium enterprises,’ and adds: ‘In the BID area, to put it into context, there are 667 that pay but there are 1135 businesses, or rateable values.’

It’s by and large welcomed by the business community. ‘Every Friday I try to speak to businesses and we’ve had nothing but positive responses,’ says Stefan.

Four key areas are reflected in the business plan: promoting Norwich; creating the Norwich experience, thanks to early evening events, the alert radio scheme and the city hosts (the Games Makersstyle volunteers are a national first and even got the Olympic seal of approval from Lord Coe); creating a cleaner, greener city; and, finally, creating a stronger voice for business.

And, Stefan announces: ‘We’ve just drawn in funding from the Technology Strategy Board to look at doing a Near Field Communication trial in Norwich.’ He believes contactless communication between smartphones and tablets could help reinvigorate the high street. ‘We are looking at making Norwich one of the pioneers of NFC,’ he says.

Stefan is well aware Norwich BID needs to deliver: ‘I respond to a

board of 20 directors made up of the business communities - and those businesses are the levy payers at the end of the day.’

He is perfectly placed to be Executive Director. Born and bred in Norwich, he was the City Centre Manager with Norwich City Council for more than five years.

Although he says: ‘The Business Improvement District allows us to have a little bit more aspiration to really up the game of the city centre.’

He recalls: ‘I was private sector prior to working for city council so it was a mindset change working with a local authority.

‘I described it, when I went for the post of city centre manager, as being like a poacher turned gamekeeper because I understood what the retailers would want.’

In fact, Stefan had worked in several management roles: running bars and restaurants in various London stations for Compass Group; in the West End for the then Virgin Cinemas; Sainsbury’s and Rentokil Initial.

‘I thoroughly enjoyed my time in London and spent 10 enjoyable years there in my 20s.’ However, as he acknowledges: ‘The quality of life in Norwich is its big selling point.’

The former Norwich School pupil has come full circle. ‘It’s very strange coming back and working with Norwich School: we’re supporting the Young Norfolk Arts Festival and I work closely with the headmaster Stefan Griffiths,’ says Stefan.

He studied Classical Civilisations and Archaeology at Nottingham University, which may explain why daughters Adara, five, and Isis, two, are thus named. ‘Adara is Ancient Greek and it means beautiful and Isis is an Egyptian goddess,’ says Stefan, who lives in Thorpe Hamlet with his wife Alison.

He was particularly pleased that the exhibition Roman Empire: Power and People came to Norwich Castle recently, courtesy of the British Museum. ‘I love all that stuff, and did my dissertation on metopes and pediments (which is the very nerdy architecture at the end of the temples!) so for me it was beautiful seeing some of that stuff come to Norwich.’

Stefan is keen to promote Norwich as a festival city, hence BID worked with the Norfolk and Norwich Festival on the extra, final event called It’s Your Festival last month.

It also supports the City of Ale Festival, which finishes this month, and this will be swiftly followed by visit to the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group – one of the largest groups at Westminster. ‘I’m not even an ale drinker!’ admits the lager-loving former rugby player. ‘It’s not my first tipple of choice but I think I will indulge.’ He adds: ‘I do enjoy a pint of Ribcracker at the Ribs of Beef and have a few drinks in The Murderers with Philip Cutter, who sits on my board!’

In 2017 there will be a re-ballot for the Norwich BID. Stefan is hopeful it can secure another yes vote.

‘Norwich has the opportunity of having at least two Business Improvement Districts,’ says Stefan, who can envisage a secondary BID, encompassing Prince of Wales Road and Tombland.’ Could he also envisage bossing both? ‘Who knows - I love what I do,’ says Stefan.

‘I love the city and love the opportunity to put something back.’

Pearls

Pearls have fascinated us all for centuries. Regarded as both good luck in marriage and expressions of sorrow, they enjoy a timeless charm. Sarah Hardy reports

P

earl jewellery has a long and noble history.

During the Roman Empire, pearls were a symbol of wealth and status whilst in medieval Europe they were symbols of authority on regalia, and as attributes of Christ and the Virgin Mary in jewellery, symbolising purity and chastity.

By the 17th and 18th centuries pearls had become lavish adornments, symbolising high social rank while by the early 19th century, pearls were used in more elaborate jewellery, celebrating love or expressing grief.

Leading lights of the 19th century European Courts enjoyed wearing pearls very much, with necklaces very fashionable, from long ropes to chokers.

Rulers often wore crowns adorned with pearls to demonstrate their authority and the prosperity of their land. In Russia, Iran, China and India, ostentatious displays of pearls formed an integral part of the regalia of ruling monarch.

Indeed, our own Crown Jewels have many glorious pearls in the crowns, orbs, sceptres and swords. And both royal and aristocratic women have always worn intricate tiaras, adorned with pearls, to impress!

The Art Nouveau period saw many elaborate pieces created, often with a nature or wildlife theme, while the Roaring Twenties saw long sautoirs worn with flapper dresses for an ‘in’ look.

In the final part of the 20th century, jewellery design saw many changes. During the 1960s and 70s, European jewellers broke away from all conventions and created abstract pieces, with pearls used in very unusual settings.

And the 1980s saw designers seeking out more novel creations, continually searching for new ways of wearing them. Often this was setting them in a variety of metals, perhaps with textured surfacing, or combining them with non-precious materials.

Overall, the variety of pearl jewellery is boundless. Whether natural, cultured or imitation, pearls remain a firm fashion favourite and are worn by an increasing amount of women.

Maria Pennington, manager of Bradley Hatch, a family jewellery company based in Wroxham, is passionate about pearls, admitting: ‘I wear them 90 per cent of the time! They really give me a lift. And they do wonders for your complexion. I always think that if I have my mascara, my lipstick and my pearls, then I am ready for the day!’

She continues: ‘They simply epitomise elegance, softness, femininity – just think of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany’s. And they really do go with any outfit.

‘Younger girls love to wear them with say jeans and a smart shirt, they will layer them up, wearing several ropes, of differing lengths, or wearing several bracelets on their arm.’

She explains that each pearl is individual, like its owner, and that they come in many different colours so there is always one to suit a person’s complexion. ‘Generally, the rounder the better, although the lustre and sheen contribute to the cost,’ she explains, adding: ‘They are often given as gifts for Christenings, weddings, 18th birthdays and so on – and people do pass them on. But you need to look after them – keep them in their own box that isn’t airtight. And don’t shower or bathe in them!’

A Privileged Position Julian Gibbons isn’t too impressed by the seeming misuse of the law by a MP

When I was training to become a solicitor the syllabus was somewhat distorted, in the sense that much of what young law students learned was difficult to put into practice. For example, there were big chunks on the law of murder and manslaughter, which fortunately the average practitioner encounters relatively rarely in their career. Likewise, whilst constitutional law gave us a valuable oversight as to the sources of law, for most it became of mere historic interest.

One thing though we were taught was that when it came to parliament, it is sovereign. One of the consequences of sovereignty is the privilege which attaches to pronouncements made by MPs and peers in the two houses. This means that however outrageous, they cannot be sued for defamation.

Parliament itself maintains some basic checks to ensure that this privilege is not abused.

Every so often, the right is abused and the innocent victim of the parliamentary slur has no remedy, other than to write letters to the newspapers or use the internet to put their version across.

Most recently a firm of solicitors in the north west of England has become the victim of a parliamentary mugging by the MP for Rochdale, Simon Danczuk. He has been apparently been approached by a constituent, a Mr Cowdry, who believes that he had been penalised by the firm, about whom he complained some four years ago. The complaint related to the administration of his late father’s estate and Mr Cowdry now owes the firm something in the order of £127,000 in legal costs.

One of the less savoury aspects of the workings of the democratic system is the tendency for our representatives to sound off when not in possession of the full facts. In this case Mr Danczuk saw fit to brand the firm’s senior partner a ‘solicitor from hell’. He also accused the firm of ‘finding a loophole’ to enable it to sue Mr Cowdry for complaining. The Solicitors Regulation Authority added fuel to the flames by expressing sympathy with Mr Cowdry’s position, and even writing to the MP in question with a letter containing multiple errors of fact and law, something entirely outside their remit as a regulator.

At first blush, this appears a scandalous affair. No one should be penalised for making a complaint about a firm of solicitors.

However, the reality is somewhat different.

First, Mr Cowdry was never a client of the firm, but rather a beneficiary along with various brothers and sisters. Second, the firm’s senior partner was the executor and trustee of the estate.

This obliges him to administer the estate according to law and if those obligations conflict with the wishes of a single beneficiary he may have to ignore them, if they do not accord with the best interests of other beneficiaries.

In this case Mr Cowdry behaved unreasonably and to the prejudice of his co beneficiaries. He ignored reasonable requests of the executor to leave the house of his late father so that it could be sold in order to pay him and the other beneficiaries what was due to them under the will. He then complained about this to the Legal Complaints Service. These were not complaints about the conduct of a solicitor in the management of a client’s affairs, but rather were about the way the executor had performed his duties, something for which he is ultimately accountable to the court. The executor therefore sought the court’s permission to charge the estate for dealing with complaints about him as executor, something that the Legal Complaints Service should never, he said, have involved itself in. The High Court agreed with him and found against Mr Cowdry. Not only this, but costs were awarded in favour of both the executor and, as significantly, in favour of Mr Cowdry’s siblings, who were also parties to the action. This says much about the view of the court of Mr Cowdry’s behaviour.

Astonishingly, none of this was mentioned by Danczuk when he laid his parliamentary question. Denigrating a professional firm and one of its partners is a disgrace when done behind parliamentary privilege and where the MP concerned is either not in possession of the facts because he hasn’t bothered to check, or is but chooses not to mention them.

In this case his appalling behaviour is made worse by the fact that at no time before making his comments did Danczuk approach the firm to find out its version of events. Whether he bothered to read the judgment of the court is not clear, but if he did it certainly isn’t apparent from his pronouncements.

So, an issue portrayed in a convenient sound bite as being a poor constituent oppressed by a hateful firm of solicitors because he dares to complain turns into a constituent whose conduct towards the executors of his father’s estate is so bad that the executor is forced to seek the approval of the court for his administration of the estate. A constituent left with a bill because he complained becomes a constituent ordered by the court to pay costs, not just to the firm but to his siblings too because of his unreasonable behaviour.

I hope the firm concerned does not hold its breath waiting for Danczuk to apologise. They have complained to the Speaker of the House of Commons about the MP’s conduct. If I were them, I would be waiting for Danczuk to repeat the comments outside the House. Such a step would show that Danczuk had confidence in his position. Again, I will not be holding my breath.

The Best Just Got Better Matt Joy approves of the changes made to the Skoda Yeti, a first class family car

OW ON EARTH do you take a success story and make it better?

That’s the difficult task facing Skoda with its all-conquering Yeti. First introduced in 2009 it tore up the rule book with its novel approach to practical motoring.

Combining the best elements of a family hatchback with those of an SUV to create the ideal crossover.

The general public clearly thought so; over 250,000 have been sold since 2009 with a big chunk of those in the UK too. But the competition never lets up so the Yeti has been enhanced, with the facelifted version arriving in showrooms early in 2014.

The change you’ll notice first is the exterior.

The Yeti has been brought more into line with the family look, so there’s a squared-off grille, smarter body-coloured elements all round and new bi-xenon headlights with LEDs. The round fog lights are gone and replaced by more discreet rectangular items too.

Even with a more mature and discreet look there’s no mistaking the Yeti for anything else. It still has that tough, planted look, and with new choices of alloy wheel and paint colour there’s even more opportunity to stand out from the crowd. If you don’t like the Yeti then these details probably won’t change your mind, but the Yeti is distinctive in a sea of similarity and is worthy of praise for that.

There’s an added twist however. As well as the standard Yeti there is the Outdoor model, which as its name suggests is better prepared for tough treatment. Outdoor models have black trim down the sides and on the lower edges of the bumpers, so bumps and scrapes won’t break your heart. The bumpers themselves are also of a different design to allow better approach and departure angles should you choose to venture off-road.

There are updates on the inside too with a new three-spoke steering wheel, new seat trims and fabrics plus the option of decorative inserts on the dashboard. It helps to lift the already-good quality feeling of the cabin, without sacrificing any of its utility.

Interior flexibility is still one of the Yeti’s strongest assets. The load area is unchanged at 510 litres up to a maximum of 1760 with all the seats removed, an impressive figure for a car of this size. There’s still the flexibility to slide, fold and remove the three individual rear seats too, something which very few rivals can offer.

Add to that some new tech, such as a reversing camera and keyless start for the first time, plus clever features such as a rechargeable torch mounted in the boot and a high-vis vest holder under the front seat and you get the feeling that the Yeti could cope with just about anything.

Especially if you go for the four-wheel drive version, now equipped with the latest generation Haldex system that automatically diverts power to all four wheels only when required which helps to save fuel as well as giving you traction when required. In fact the new system means all 4x4 versions have reduced CO2 emissions compared to the outgoing models.

Climb behind the wheel and getting comfortable is easy, with plenty of adjustment in the steering wheel and the seat, all topped off by that raised driving position that is a real boon. It’s also a delightfully easy car to drive; the manual gearbox is slick, the pedal weights are nice and light and the steering is well-weighted and accurate.

Despite its modest size the 1.2 TSI version gets along very well indeed, behaving like a much larger, naturally aspirated engine and pulling the Yeti along more than quick enough to keep up with the traffic flow.

However the best all-rounder has to be the 2.0 TDI with 140PS, which comes in four-wheel drive Outdoor form. With more torque than you really need you can get up to speed with complete ease, and cruising never requires any effort even on inclines. The security of four-wheel drive traction also means you can hustle the Yeti along if you want to, and despite its height it feels secure, comfortable and even good fun.

That the revised Yeti has gained improvements and additions rather than wholesale changes tells you everything you need to know; this was an excellent car to start with, and the changes have merely added to its appeal. It’s a family car you need not make excuses for.

Cars with cross country 4x4 capabilities remain hugely popular, which could well explain why Volvo has introduced a Cross Country version of its V40 hatchback.

This very capable all-roader is enhanced by a number of unique Cross Country details, including wheels with the same size as the Volvo V70, including up to 19-inch rims, a front with dark, contrasting bumper, honeycomb mesh grille and upright DRL-lights and the contrasting rear bumper with integrated skid plate. Plus the driver rides 40 mm higher in the V40 Cross Country than in the standard V40, bringing him or her up to a whole new altitude.

The five-door, five-seat premium all-roader features refined off-road inspired details, such as the anodized, black high104

gloss frame around the greenhouse, the black rear-view mirror housings and the sleek rails floating over the roof.

Inside there’s a very much a copper and brown theme.

The Raw Copper exterior colour alternative is echoed in the contrasting stitching inside - and it can be emphasised even further by choosing the Copper Dawn centre stack inlay. The leather upholstery comes in five different versions, including the Espresso Brown accent colour.

The Volvo V40 Cross Country looks as though it has been designed around people. The wide instrument panel, together with the fluidity of the door design, creates a spacious, ‘largecar’ feeling. The interior is designed to offer the driver and passengers a spacious and relaxing atmosphere with a true Scandinavian flavour.

With a fully graphic display, the V40 Cross Country is available with a new, instrument cluster that expresses emotional functionality, always displaying the most important information in any given situation right in front of the driver.

And it certainly offers versatility for open-ended adventures - the V40 Cross Country offers thrill-seeking customers the right versatility to bring both friends and gear along on an open-ended adventure. The two-piece, 40/60, rear seat backrest can be easily folded, for example.

Sensus Connected Touch offers new connectivity possibilities, turning the seven-inch display into a state-of-theart infrared, beam-scanned touch screen that can be used even when wearing gloves - a world first in cars.

All wheel drive enhances capability, of course. The V40 Cross Country features class-leading driving dynamics with All Wheel Drive available on the T5 (and T4) versions to enhance the all-road, all-weather capability.

The five-cylinder 2.5-litre T5 engine has a power output of 254 hp and 400 Nm of torque, including 40 Nm overboost delivered during acceleration. It comes with automatic transmission and acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes 6.1 seconds. Fuel consumption is 7.8 l/100 km (EU Combined).

The T5 version comes with a six-speed automatic gearbox, then there’s the Hill Descent Control. To make altitudechanging adventures more comfortable for the driver, the V40 Cross Country also features Hill Descent Control on the T5 version with All Wheel Drive.

It feels fast on the move. Like all good Volvos there is a characterful beat from the engine when extended which encourages you to make the most of it. Whether you leave the gearbox in automatic mode or flick it up and down with the lever, it switches ratios smoothly and quickly, emphasising the performance. And the four-wheel drive system is clever and highly effective; some time spent driving the Cross Country on a frozen lake in Sweden revealed that it is secure and reassuring with Volvo’s DTSC system switched on, and surprisingly playful and fun with it turned off. The modest flurries of snow and cold weather in the UK wouldn’t trouble it in the slightest.

But most of all the Cross Country makes you feel cosseted as the driver. The seats are superb (with the option of contrasting trim which looks pretty smart), the driving position is excellent and of course a fraction higher thanks to the increase in ride height, and the dashboard is both visually attractive and easy to use. The ‘floating’ centre console design has been around for a few years but it still looks fresh. The simple button arrangement is easy to use and the clear display screen is simple to navigate.

The added features on the Cross Country version are very welcome – it gives a strong impression of being equipped for life, with plenty of thought given to the layout and how it can best suit a multitude of users and situations.

Retirement Party, Great Yarmouth More than 200 people came together at the Imperial Hotel in Great Yarmouth to wish BDO consultant Michael Muskett a happy retirement. Michael started work in 1961 at accountants Tunbridge and Groom which later went on to become PKF and finally, just over a year, this company merged with BDO. Chinese New Year, Riverbank Chinese Restaurant, Norwich The Chinese New Year, the Year of the Horse, was celebrated with a buffet dinner and auction.

The event was hosted by Toni Patching and Piang Fui Pun at their Riverbank Restaurant in Norwich.

Guests included the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Norwich, and the Sheriff of Norwich and the Sheriff’s Lady.

More than £5000 was raised for this year’s Norwich Civic Charity, Leeway, which helps victims of domestic violence and abuse.

Auction prizes included a holiday villa in Gambia and a signed Norwich City Football Club shirt.

KLM UK Engineering Apprentices Day, Norwich Airport KLM UK Engineering, based at Norwich Airport, opened its hangar doors to careerseekers looking for dream apprenticeships as trainee aircraft engineers.

Julian Taylor Julian Taylor, Show Director of the Royal Norfolk Show which celebrates its 60th anniversary this month, explains exactly why Horatio Nelson is his Norfolk hero

Describe your job to us I am Show Director, ensuring that the Royal Norfolk Show remains the best two day agricultural show in the country. This is not just in terms of numbers of people attending, but in the quality of stock to be judged, and this comes through many years of dedicated service of staff, exhibitors and inviting the top judges in the country to attend.

Are you Norfolk born and bred?

Yes, I am ‘bred and born’, as we say in Norfolk. I was born at Ditchingham near Bungay, and I live and farm in Starston near Harleston.

What’s your ideal day out in the area?

I thoroughly enjoy visiting churches throughout Norfolk: graveyards are always fascinating as they are a physical connection with history.

Which iconic Norfolk characters do you most admire and why?

Horatio Nelson. Coming from a naval family, as I do, he is, without doubt, a true Norfolk hero. Having been born on the north Norfolk coast at Burnham Thorpe, he was absorbed by the sea, tides and winds. There is no doubt that his early years informed and influenced his decision processes later in life to become the great tactician that he was. I was lucky enough to visit Nisbit Plantation on Nevis Island which was home to his wife Frances ‘Fanny’ Nisbit, and I was amused that even now Lady Hamilton, Nelson’s mistress and consort, is referred to as ‘that Hamilton woman’ on the island. I think that of all his attributes it was his tenacity during peace time, when on half-pay, that encourages me most. He certainly had some personal wealth but he was always trying to find a position and had no qualms about pushing himself forward as the most suitable person to take command. And he had the drive to succeed.

What’s your favourite pub in Norfolk and what do you like to drink there?

Sadly my favourite pub is no more: The King’s Head at Pulham St Mary. It used to be run by Jack Brice, who was a wonderful host and was not beyond having

‘lock-ins’ until the early hours. And, being from the Waveney Valley, Adnams bitter was my favourite pint.

Where do you like to eat out in Norfolk and why? And what do you order?

For eating out my wife and I like to go to the Wildebeest at Stoke Holy Cross, where I will have locally produced meat or fish and vegetables.

What do you miss most when you leave the region?

I miss the farm at Starston, whether it’s the crops growing in the fields or the woods and the wildlife living within.

What are you reading at the moment?

I, sadly, only read when on holiday, as there are many farming and related magazines and papers that need studying. On holiday I will read about the Second World War - normally the exploits of those behind enemy lines.

Would you prefer – a day on the Broads or a day at Yarmouth’s Pleasure Beach? Why? Of these two choices the Broads would always win, as I can find great pleasure in being out in wild places I am a keen watcher of wildlife.

Opera, musical, drama or movie - which would you prefer to watch? And what was the last production/ show you saw?

Opera – we will go to the Theatre Royal to enjoy one of the performances given by the Glyndebourne Touring Opera Company when they come to Norwich in the autumn.
