LETTER FROM CEO Dear iBLOOM reader, 2021 is already in full swing and I want to wish every iBLOOM reader a year filled with joy and inner peace! During 2020, I learnt that inner peace and acceptance can only happen when we consciously make changes within us. 2020 has taught us that although we often do not have control over or cannot change our situation, we do have a daily choice and control over our thoughts and attitude.

When I joined our beauty group more than 10 years ago, I learnt the importance of having a proper skin care routine, and how something as simple as a good routine with good products, can dramatically change your skin. It’s something small over which you have the power and control. At home, you have two opportunities every day to change your skin - once in the morning and once at night. Don’t let these opportunities go to waste! Using good products on your skin twice a day can make such a difference and your monthly treatments will also work so much better, if you’re already caring for your skin properly. I have two teenagers at home, who are going through hormonal and emotional changes. One of the biggest lessons that I am sharing with them as their Mom, is to love the skin that they’re born into and to have a regular skin care routine. Our skins love routine!

As we step into autumn, we all delight in witnessing leaves changing into the most beautiful colours. Our business park is filled with trees transforming into the most stunning yellow, orange and red shades and when I drive into through the business park and see this amazing canvas of colour each morning, I am always in awe of creation! We are delighted to bring you our autumn edition, which is packed yet again, from front to back cover, with the best beauty and wellness solutions. In addition, I would like to pay a special tribute to all of the mothers out there. Fall Into Autumn!

“Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree.”~Emily Brontë Summer is coming to an end and as we gently fall into autumn, this season brings with it a time of change and rich beauty, as we become mesmerised by nature’s transformation into a kaleidoscope of colour - gorgeous deep and vibrant russets, oranges and reds mingled with rich golden and brown hues. We observe with wonder, as the leaves all around us change and gradually start to fall, all in preparation for the winter months to come.

Just as in nature, it is also a time of transition for us. As we pack away our swimwear and slowly unpack those warmer clothes, we recognise the effect that summer has had on our skins, after months of sun exposure. So let’s embrace this season as the perfect time to care for our skin and repair our skin’s barrier, to make sure it is functioning at its optimum level - radiant, healthy and ready for the drier winter months, which are just around the corner.

Transitioning Your skin is a living, breathing organ that constantly has to adapt to its surroundings and environment, so, as the seasons change, it’s quite normal for your skin to also go through a transition period. Your skin may be dull or feeling drier and may need more nourishment after spending time in the summer sun. To navigate these seasonal changes, make the most of exfoliators, masks, serums and moisturisers to help repair any skin damage and give your skin a boost.

Step 1: Exfoliate away

Our hands are an outward extension of our hearts and minds. They powerfully affirm what we are expressing with our words when we speak, to help get our message across to the person we are communicating with. Just think about those flamboyant people you know who 'talk with their hands!'

In the past, the focus was on having a simple manicure to keep our natural nails neat and tidy, and the biggest decision we had to make, was which colour to paint them! Today, we have an explosion of choices and decisions to make from what fabulous nail shape to choose, whether to keep our natural nails or strengthen and enhance them with artificial tips and extensions, to how to show off our personalities with all the elaborate nail art on offer, including decorative stones or glitter, not just for special occasions, but for gorgeous nails, every single day!

MANICURES

COLOUR ME

What does a manicure entail?

You know this ‘golden oldie’. It is a liquid lacquer available in a variety of colours, painted onto the natural nail using a base coat to avoid staining your natural nail and with a top coat for shine and sealing the product. Nail polish is not as strong and durable as gel polish, gel or acrylic and will only last about 4-7 days, and can chip or peel.

The first step is to make sure your own nails on your hands and feet are as healthy as possible and this can be done with a regular manicure. This will ensure that your nails are at their strongest for when your nail technician works with your natural nails or applies any artificial nail enhancements A manicure starts with a soak to soften the skin and cuticles, followed by cuticle removal, a buff to even out your nails and then a file to ensure they are all the same shape and length. You may then choose to leave your nails natural, have a French manicure finish or have a nail polish colour applied.

A manicure is finished off with moisturiser, massage and cuticle oil. There are several add-on’s that can be included, such as a Gel Polish Application, Paraffin Wax and more.

Nail Polish Application:

Removal: Removal can be done at home or in salon with a nail polish remover or acetone.

Gel Polish Application (Light Cured Polish)

This is probably what you’re getting when you ask for ‘Gelish’. This product is basically a hybrid of gel and nail polish, and it is cured and hardened with a LED/UV light. It’s not as hard as gel, but longer lasting than normal polish, and will last you approximately 2–3 weeks, without chipping.

Removal: This product is soaked off with 100% acetone by your therapist in salon and your nails are buffed and prepared for your next application of colour.

NAIL ENHANCEMENTS

At your appointment, your nail technician will assess your nails and discuss the options to advise you on the best treatment to give you the desired finish that you are looking for.

If your nails are not strong and don’t grow well or you simply want fabulous looking nails, your nail technician will advise you on the correct choice of the following: Overlays, Gel or Acrylic Tips, Gel or Acrylic Sculptures, as well as nail colour and nail art options.

Overlays:

An overlay is when acrylic or gel is applied directly onto your natural nail and shaped by hand, before being buffed and sealed with a top coat to create that glossy effect. This nail enhancement technique does not involve the lengthening of the nail with a tip or being sculptured.

Longevity: 2–3 weeks Perfect option for: Anyone with nails lacking in natural wow factor and helps to strengthen nails that are in reasonable condition.

Overlays

Tips:

Tips are pre-cut pieces of plastic that nail technicians use to give your nails length, by using a nail glue to attach them to the natural nail. They are unusually long for most women, and need to be cut down by the technician to your desired length.

Acrylic or gel is then used to seamlessly blend the tip in with your natural nail. Once your nails are dried, they are filed, shaped and designed according to your preference.

Longevity: 2–3 weeks Perfect option for: Anyone looking to add some length and strength to their nails.

Sculptures:

Sculptured nails are when acrylic or gel is applied over the entire natural nail and then lengthened using a piece of foil, called a ‘nail form’ to support the extension and shaping of the nail. This nail technique offers a wide range of creative designs and is the most popular with classic ‘trend-setters’.

Longevity: 2–3 weeks Perfect option for: Anyone looking for nails

that are trendy, but light-weight and strong, and these are perfect for Instagram photo’s.

What is Acrylic:

Acrylic is the original product used for nail extensions. It’s a combination of a liquid and powder that creates a hard protective layer over your nails, whether they are natural, tips or sculptures. The mixture hardens from exposure to air and can be shaped or sculpted into your desired look. It is finished off with a glossy top coat for a polished look.

Acrylic Tips

Removal: This product must be soaked off in salon with acetone, filing and buffing to avoid nail damage.

Advantages of Acrylic Nails:

• Ideal if you are very rough with your hands, as they are strong and durable.

• The nail extensions can be strong, flexible and natural-looking.

• They can be moulded and filed into your preferred nail shape.

• Maintenance is quick and easy.

Gel Sculptures

What is Gel:

Also known as a “hard gel,” it has a honey-like consistency and cures under an UV curing light.

It can be applied over your natural nails or tips and can be used for a Sculptured application too. The main difference between Gel and Gel Polish is that your nail tech can repair, strengthen or extend the length of your nail with gel, and it can then be shaped and sculpted to your desired look, just like acrylic.

Removal: This product must be soaked off in salon with acetone, filing and buffing to avoid nail damage.

Here are some things to consider:

• Stiletto tips (tips or nail shapes) are very weak and break easily. However, they are the best option if you have naturally downward pointing nails, providing your natural nails are strong.

• Ballerina nails (tips or nail shapes) Ballerina nails are essentially a stiletto nail with the tips cut off to resemble ballerina slippers for a graceful, elongated look. The blunter edge makes it a little stronger than a stiletto.

• Almond nails (tips or nail shapes) Almond nails are flattering for most nails due to the softly tapered finish. Ideal for slenderising wider fingers and shorter hands for a girly, glamorous finish.

• Oval nails (tips or nail shapes) are stronger and better shock absorbers than pointed nails, but are not as strong as squoval or square tips.

• Square or slightly rounded tips (tips or nail shapes) have a larger surface area and therefore absorb shock better. This makes these tips stronger and less likely to break.

• Squoval tips (tips or nail shapes) (square with rounded corners) make fingers look longer and slender. This makes them perfect for short nails and fingers.

• Square tips (tips or nail shapes) are ideal for clients who have long narrow or medium width nails, as they create the illusion of width.
