INTRODUCTION This book brings together a collection of images captured alongside older adults living across communities in the UK and Brazil. The photographs depict everyday experiences, daily lives, important places and challenges and opportunities to living in the community. The images form part of a funded project called PlaceAge, which is being led by UK and Brazilian academics, exploring how we can better design environments to support older adults to age in place.

PlaceAge ‘Age-friendly cities’ are defined as the policies, services and structures that enable older people to ‘age actively’ – that is, live in good security, enjoy good health and continue to participate fully in society. Place-Making with Older Adults: Towards Age-Friendly Communities (PlaceAge) project (2016-19) has undertaken research in six cities in the UK (Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester) and Brazil (Pelotas, Belo Horizonte and Brasilia) to explore how older adults experience ageing across diverse urban, social and cultural contexts and to identify implications for the design of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities. As part of the first phase of the research, we conducted over 120 walking interviews and 60 photo diaries with older adults living across a total of 18 neighbourhoods in the 6 cities in the UK and Brazil. Neighbourhoods were chosen according to varying levels of 16

affluence and distance from the city centre. In the UK, Manchester (Baguley, Rusholme and Didsbury); Edinburgh (Craigmillar, Leith and Morningside) and Glasgow (Partick, Govanhill and Easterhouse) were selected and in Brazil, Pelotas (Centro, Fragata and Navegantes), Brasília (Asa Norte, Asa Sul and Granja do Torto), and Belo Horizonte (Centro, Anchieta and Aglomerado da Serra). The walking interviews involved researchers accompanying older adults on a typical journey through the community. During the walk, participants identified challenges and opportunities to ageing in place and reflected on the meanings, associations and memories in relation to the community. The photo diaries invited older adults to capture images of living in the community across a fixed time period (commonly a week), followed by a photo-elicitation interview with the researcher which prompted the development of stories

INTRODUÇÃO Este livro traz uma coleção de imagens fotografadas por moradores de 60 anos ou mais de cidades britânicas e brasileiras. As fotografias retratam suas vidas cotidianas, seus desejos, e os lugares e pessoas mais importantes para eles. Essas imagens fazem parte de um estudo chamado PlaceAge, que é desenvolvido por um grupo de pesquisadores brasileiros e britânicos, os quais buscam entender quais fatores devem ser considerados no planejamento de cidades que permitam as pessoas envelhecerem de uma forma saudável, feliz e ativa.

PlaceAge Quando nos referimos a “cidades amigas do envelhecimento” estamos falando de cidades que possuam e apliquem na prática políticas públicas, que ofereçam serviços e estruturas que permitam às pessoas envelhecerem ativamente, ou seja, viverem em segurança, com saúde e plenamente participativas na sociedade. `Projetando Lugares com Idosos: Rumo às Comunidades Amigas do Envelhecimento` (conhecido como PlaceAge) realiza desde 2016 um estudo sobre o processo de envelhecimento em três cidades no Reino Unido (Edimburgo, Glasgow e Manchester) e três cidades no Brasil (Pelotas, Belo Horizonte e Brasília). O objetivo é entender como as pessoas com 60 anos ou mais vivenciam o envelhecimento em diversos contextos urbanos, sociais e culturais, de modo a identificar o que deve ser feito para termos cidades e comunidades amigas do

envelhecimento. Na primeira fase do estudo realizamos mais de 120 entrevistas caminhadas e 60 diários fotográficos com moradores de 18 bairros das seis cidades investigadas. A entrevista caminhada foi um método qualitativo aplicado pelos pesquisadores que acompanharam os entrevistados por um passeio pelo bairro. O percurso da caminhada foi definido totalmente pelos entrevistados. Durante a caminhada os moradores iam relatando sobre pontos do bairro e fotografando tudo o que achavam importante para suas vidas diárias. Os moradores foram selecionados por meio de um catálogo de contatos composto por pessoas que haviam participado de outros métodos da pesquisa, ou haviam sido indicadas por alguém. Um ou outro morador foram convidados a participar através de uma abordagem nas ruas do bairro. O diário 17

Both approaches provided rich material (visual and audio) on the physical (places and spaces), psychological (emotional attachments to place) and social (social participation and civic engagement) dimensions of ageing well.

Os moradores foram convidados a ficarem com uma câmera fotográfica durante uma semana e registrarem com ela todas as fotos que achassem importante para a caracterização de suas vivências no bairro. Um aspecto desse método é quanto à análise das fotografias: contrariamente à interpretação orientada pelo pesquisador; o diário fotográfico permitiu discutir os motivos e as razões por trás das imagens retratadas pelo próprio entrevistado. Nesse sentido, uma narrativa foi construída pelo participante junto a cada fotografia.

Work Packages

The PlaceAge Project is funded by the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) and addresses three specific research questions:

The PlaceAge Project in Brazil and UK was developed across three inter-linked work packages. In work package 1 (May 2016-September 2017), the research collected over 540 surveys, 180 face-to-face semi-structured interviews, 120 walking interviews and 60 photo diaries with older adults living across a total of 18 neighbourhoods in the 6 cities. In work package 2 (September 2017-August 2018), over 18 community mapping workshops and 18 knowledge cafĂŠ discussions were undertaken in the UK and Brazil with over 500 older adults and key stakeholders. Work package 3 (August 2018-May 2019) translated the findings from WP1 and WP2 into local and national policy and practice guidelines and tools and resources for designing sense of place for older adults which accommodate both the need for independence and mobility whilst encouraging social participation and community engagement. (i) How is sense of place experienced by older adults from diverse urban neighbourhoods in Brazil and UK? (ii) What services, amenities and features are needed to create age friendly communities that promote healthy cities and active ageing in different urban, social and cultural contexts? (iii) How can communities be designed to better integrate the sense of place needs of older adults across different urban and cultural contexts? The aim of the research is to develop place-making tools and resources which are essential for designing age friendly environments for older adults.

Objetivos do PlaceAge

Etapas de trabalho

O PlaceAge é um projeto financiado pela Agência Britânica ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) e tem como objetivo responder a três perguntas:

O Projeto PlaceAge no Brasil e no Reino Unido é organizado em três etapas de trabalho. Na primeira etapa (de maio de 2016 a setembro de 2017) a pesquisa aplicou 540 questionários, 180 entrevistas, 120 entrevistas caminhadas e 60 diários fotográficos com moradores de 60 anos ou mais nas cidades estudadas. Na segunda etapa (de setembro de 2017 a agosto de 2018) foram realizados 18 mapeamentos participativos e 18 workshops no Reino Unido e no Brasil com mais de 500 idosos e pessoas envolvidas em projetos nas cidades, nos setores público e privado. A terceira etapa de trabalho (de agosto de 2018 a agosto de 2019) teve como objetivo traduzir as descobertas das primeiras duas etapas em políticas e práticas locais e nacionais, bem como em ferramentas e recursos para projetar cidades adequadas a um envelhecimento ativo e saudável. O foco foi definir uma série de diretrizes urbanas que promovam a participação social e envolvimento da comunidade nos projetos urbanos. (i) Como o sentido de lugar é vivenciado e construído por moradores de 60 anos ou mais de diferentes classes sociais que vivem em diferentes bairros no Brasil e no Reino Unido? (ii) Quais serviços, amenidades e fatores são necessários para criar comunidades amigas do envelhecimento que promovam cidades saudáveis e ativo envelhecimento em diferentes contextos urbanos e culturais? (iii) Como as comunidades podem ser projetadas para melhor integrar as necessidades de senso de lugar das pessoas mais velhas em diferentes contextos urbanos e culturais? O objetivo da pesquisa é articular melhor o papel dos idosos como atores ativos no processo de design, envolvendo a comunidade dos bairros em todas as etapas de planejamento da cidade.

Photo-themes In the following sections we present the everyday lived experiences of older adults through photographs and narratives collected in the UK and Brazil. Each section represents a different theme derived from an analysis of the photo-diaries and walking interviews applied in the first year of the project “Place-Making with Older People: Towards Age Friendly Communities”. The themes presented here are: Place identity and histories: were expressed as important to older adults retaining a sense of place rootedness i.e. a feeling of being firmly established, settled, or entrenched in the community through historical ties. Older adults expressed a desire to a) retain and celebrate the sense of history and identity of the area and b) ensure changes support people to reconnect with their new environments. Important in retaining a sense of place was the preservation of community hubs e.g. libraries which act as both a social and educational space. Community places and social spaces: provided opportunities and places for social participation and engagement giving older adults people a sense of value and purpose in old age. Thereby enabling them to lead productive lives and make a positive 22

contribution in their community. Green spaces for wellbeing: older adults identifed the benefits of green space, not only as providing restorative benefits (place to sit, reminisce and think) but as an opportunity to engage in activities with others or as social spaces for family and community. These included public parks alongside more quasi-private green spaces such as community gardens. However, green spaces are increasingly being built on for private housing developments reducing the availability of quality outdoor space. Non places: in many communities, older adults feel that whilst there are large areas of open space, these need be transformed into usable space that provides a place for people to ‘sit and relax’, and as a place to meet up. Existing space in many neighbourhoods is in a state of disrepair, unusable and not maintained. These were seen as ‘no go’ areas, deterring use amongst older adults. These narratives portrayed a general lack of provision in terms of providing the conditions where place attachments can be developed. Navigating in the community and physical activity: older adults identified a number of barriers to getting around public spaces

Temáticas das fotos Nas seções seguintes apresentamos as experiências cotidianas vividas e expressadas por idosos no Reino Unido e no Brasil através de fotografias e narrativas. Cada seção representa uma temática diferente resultante de uma análise dos resultados obtidos através da aplicação de diários fotográficos e entrevistas caminhadas no Ano 1 da pesquisa “Projetando Lugares com Idosos: Rumo às Comunidades Amigas do Envelhecimento”. As temáticas apresentadas nesse livro são: Identidade do lugar e memória: esta temática é muito importante para os idosos e se relaciona ao sentimento dos mesmos estarem fortemente ligados e enraizados nas suas comunidades através de laços históricos. Os idosos expressam o desejo de: a) guardar e celebrar a identidade e memória da área e b) garantir que as mudanças ajudem as pessoas a se reconectarem com seus novos ambientes. Para manter o senso de lugar é relevante haver a preservação de centros comunitários e históricos, por exemplo, manter bibliotecas que funcionam como espaço social e educacional. Lugares comunitários e sociais: estes lugares oferecem oportunidades para participação

social e engajamento, valorizando a importância das pessoas idosas para a comunidade, permitindo-lhes, assim, levar vidas produtivas e dar uma positiva contribuição a sua comunidade. Áreas verdes para o bem-estar: neste tema os idosos reconhecem os benefícios das áreas verdes, não apenas como função contemplativa (lugar para sentar, relembrar e pensar), mas também como uma oportunidade de participar de atividades com outras pessoas ou apenas constituir espaços sociais para a família e a comunidade. Essas áreas incluem parques e praças públicos e espaços verdes privados, incluindo jardins comunitários. No entanto, os espaços verdes estão sendo cada vez mais construídos por empreendimentos habitacionais privados, enquanto os espaços públicos de qualidade na cidade estão se reduzindo. Não lugares: em muitas comunidades, os idosos sentem que, embora existam grandes áreas de espaços verdes, elas precisam ser transformadas em um espaço utilizável que forneça um local para as pessoas se sentarem, relaxarem, e também para se encontrarem. which makes accessing supports complex: place upkeep (litter, ice, leaves); physical barriers (upturned paving stones); the absence of street furniture (benches); and other obstacles (sandwich boards, garbage bins). Many felt anxious when journeying around the community due to: inaccessible urban spaces (e.g. narrow paths, parking on pavements); the poor positioning of transport stops (not being able to access key services e.g. hospital appointments); and ongoing disruptions (e.g. roadworks). Removing obstacles to accessing public space was not seen solely an issue for older adults but about creating open and inclusive spaces for all ages. Changing communities: this is attributed to ongoing urban regeneration and gentrification in both the UK and Brazil. The physical transformation of communities has often undermined older adult’s sense of familiarity and attachment to place and community. Age-friendly communities need to better understand and support the impact of such change on the lives of older adults. Housing and home: this theme reflects older adult’s emotional, economical, psychological and symbolical attachment to home. Home and neighbourhood are places full of experiences, memories and lifetime events which are important to older adults. For many home is a place where people feel safe and secure and a setting where they can 24

retain a sense of independence autonomy in the decisions they make.

Feeling safe and secure: this theme articulates the issue of safety as a key factor impacting ageing-in-place, with older adults feeling insecure and vulnerable when using public spaces. Many feel anxious about leaving the home, and this acts as a barrier to civic engagement and social participation. In response, people do consciously map safer routes to their destination which avoid certain areas of the neighbourhood. Other strategies to ‘feel safe’ include walking in busy streets, adopting safer modes of transport (taxi/uber versus walking) and relying upon friends and family to get around. Civic pride: older adults felt that ageing successfully requires assuming meaningful roles in old age, which can be achieved through civic participation and engagement. Older adults often participate in different forms of civic engagement in terms of organising and chairing committees and resident associations. Despite this, older adults reported that there views were seldom used to influence the decision-making process. Self-esteem, respect and recognition: this is an important aspect of living in an age-friendly community, providing older adults with a sense of visibility and recognition. Older adults often felt there was a lack of respect

Muitos se sentem apreensivos quando caminham pelo bairro devido a: espaços urbanos inacessíveis (por exemplo: caminhos estreitos e estacionamento em calçadas), mal posicionamento das paradas de ônibus (não poder acessar os principais serviços, por exemplo, para consultas hospitalares), e interrupções contínuas dos percursos (por exemplo, obras rodoviárias). A remoção de obstáculos para acessar os espaços públicos não é vista apenas como um problema para os idosos; essa remoção é necessária para criar espaços abertos e inclusivos para todas as idades.

Moradia e lar: este tema demonstra a afeição emocional, econômica, psicológica e simbólica do idoso ao lar. A habitação e o bairro são lugares cheios de experiências, memórias e eventos da vida que são importantes para os idosos. Para muitos, o lar é um lugar onde as pessoas se sentem seguras, protegidas, um ambiente onde podem manter um senso de independência e autonomia nas decisões que tomam.

Mudanças na comunidade: este tema é atribuído à contínua regeneração e valorização urbana no Reino Unido e no Brasil. A transformação física das áreas urbanas interferiu no senso de familiaridade

Sentimento de segurança: este tema articula as questões de segurança como um fator-chave que impacta no envelhecimento, como os idosos se sentem inseguros e vulneráveis ao usar espaços públicos. Muitos se sentem amedrontados em sair de casa, gerando uma barreira para o engajamento cívico e à participação social. Em resposta, as pessoas mapeiam conscientemente rotas mais seguras até o seu destino, evitando certas áreas do bairro. Outras estratégias para se sentir seguro incluem caminhar em ruas movimentadas, adotar modos de transporte mais seguros (táxi/uber versus caminhada) e confiar em amigos e familiares para se locomover. 25

from others (members of the public and transport providers) when moving around the community and on public transport, which creates a feeling of alienation and exclusion. People do not want to be treated differently by virtue of their age; rather they want to be seen as valued members of the community, where knowledge and expertise are respected and where communities are designed to support older adults to make a positive contribution. Family and community: this theme was one of the most important for the Brazilian older adults. In Brazil the life of most older adults is built around their families and many stay living with their son and daughter for life. Older adults are essential family members and are often responsible for taking care of grandchildren and even economically supporting relatives through their retirement income. Religion: the majority of older people in Brazil are very much involved in religious activities. The government often fail in providing support for older adults in terms of promoting group activities and emotional support. The churches today are assuming this role and religion has become one of the most important types of engagement for older people. Religious activities are responsible for providing emotional support and helping older adults to avoid isolation and loneliness. 26

Orgulho cívico: os idosos acham que envelhecer com sucesso requer assumir papéis significativos na velhice, o que pode ser alcançado através de diferentes formas de envolvimento cívico em termos de organização e participação em comitês e associações de residência/bairro. Auto-estima, respeito e reconhecimento: este tema é um aspecto importante em comunidades amigas do envelhecimento, proporcionando aos idosos um senso de visibilidade e reconhecimento. Os idosos expressam a falta de respeito dos outros (pessoas em geral e motoristas de ônibus) quando se deslocam pela comunidade no transporte público, o que cria um sentimento de alienação e exclusão. As pessoas não querem ser tratadas diferentemente em virtude de sua idade; em vez disso, querem ser vistas como membros valiosos da comunidade, no qual os seus conhecimentos são respeitados e as comunidades são planejadas para que os idosos possam dar uma contribuição positiva. Família e comunidade: este tema é um dos mais importantes para os idosos nas cidades brasileiras. No Brasil, a vida da maioria dos idosos é construída em torno de suas famílias e muitos permanecem vivendo com seus filhos e filhas por toda a vida. Os adultos mais velhos são membros essenciais da família e muitas vezes são

responsáveis por cuidar dos netos e até mesmo apoiar economicamente seus parentes por meio de sua renda de aposentadoria. Religião: a maioria dos idosos no Brasil está muito envolvida nas atividades religiosas. Muitas vezes o governo falha em dar apoio aos idosos em termos de promover atividades em grupo e apoio emocional. As igrejas hoje estão assumindo esse papel e a religião se torna uma das mais importantes ativadoras das comunidades em todas as classes de renda. As atividades religiosas são responsáveis pelo apoio emocional, evitando o isolamento e doenças psíquicas aos idosos em todas as cidades investigadas.

Aqui é a entrada da quadra, essa foi a primeira banquinha do Seu Lourival, e aí tem a figueira que é histórica, que eu queria mostrar. Isso, revitalizar, fazer um jardim bonito. Essa figueira histórica é que a gente estava querendo enfeitar no Natal, fazer aqui o Presépio, a gente pensava em usar esse buraco da figueira para fazer esse presépio todo. Eu gosto de morar nesse bloco, tem tudo perto, o comércio é muito bom, temos o mercado próximo, temos a igreja, tudo isso entre a 108 e a 308. A quadra é completa mesmo, tem clube, tem jardim de infância, tem escola classe até acho que a oitava série, hoje em dia mudou um pouquinho, inclusive eu estudei nessa escola classe, tenho até uma foto, em 1962 aos 10 anos. Eu só tenho essa foto, que na época não se tirava muita foto, não se ligava muito. Está vendo, essa daqui. Escola Classe SQS, super quadra 108, 4º ano. Porque antigamente era super quadra, não tinha super quadra Sul, se falava super quadra 108, depois que foi acrescentado o Sul por causa da Asa Norte, que a Asa Norte tinha poucos prédios, então a Asa Sul nessa ocasião era mais conhecida. Comentam que essa foi a primeira quadra, essa e a 308, Brasília foi inaugurada em 1960, quando eu cheguei aqui em janeiro de 1962, a quadra já estava completa, gramas, passeios, então acredito que deve ter sido mesmo a primeira, nós temos uma placa em todos os blocos dessa quadra, falando da inauguração do bloco... esse bloco foi inaugurado em 1958. They were doing a photography project. A project named “lambe-lambe” [wheat-paste]. We'd sit down, have a frame saying that they would send the picture to us, a person would perform and the other with a digital camera. É só uma barraca que vem lá de Moeda. Moeda é uma cidade que tem aqui perto, tem uns condomínios lá, tem muita chácara, tem muita casa, tem muito orgânico para aqueles lados. This photo was from our Easter lunch, during the retreat, look at the view of the retreat. It is called the retreat of Stones (Retiro das Pedras). It is a beautiful place, there are a lot of beautiful houses, but urbanization is coming, one day you will see. My friend lives there and we went for lunch there. Uma professora fez uma campanha linda para a criação deste Parque, e o governo do Distrito Federal na época, criou esse Parque Olhos d’água, que hoje é um espaço maravilhoso onde existe um espaço para idosos com uma academia ao ar livre, espaço para crianças, para você se deleitar olhando a natureza, tem fontes de água, são duas fontes de água, e olha que pássaros eu encontrei, que aves eu encontrei aqui, faisão, galinha da guiné. Esta é galinha da angola, é que a gente chama galinha guiné, aquela que fala, “tô fraco, tô fraco, tô fraco”, quando criança a gente gostava de imitar. Olha esta fonte de água aqui do Parque, isso é maravilhoso, a água cristalina descendo, brotando lá das rochas, e correndo sobre o solo, dizendo “Deus Obrigada, eu estou aqui para servir aos teus filhos, os animais, as plantas, os seres humanos”. Este lugar se presta muito para reflexões, minha janela é muito importante, abro as cortinas vejo que o sol nasceu e mesmo que não tenha nascido, que esteja chovendo, a chuva é importante para que o verde se torne cada vez mais verde.... A beleza da nossa praça pelas árvores centenárias que temos aqui. Todas as manhãs quando eu abro e vejo a beleza dessa praça, o brilhar do sol, me recordo de como a vida é bela, como é bom poder enxergar, quantas pessoas não veem o amanhecer do dia. E nós temos essa oportunidade de ver na praça um lugar público, onde as pessoas se encontram, uns para conversar, uns para namorar, outros que se encontram até mesmo para fazer negócio ou transitar pela praça. A praça é um local de trânsito de todos os tipos de pessoas. Eu costumo muito analisar as pessoas e ficar pensando. Nós estávamos sentados aqui e a gatinha estava aqui junto com os outros cachorrinhos, bem perto de mim, mas aí aquele animal veio com tamanha violência, que a gatinha velhinha se assustou e saiu correndo e ficou lá naqueles últimos galhos daquela árvore. Eu não podia tirar, ninguém conseguia tirar. Chegou um rapaz, que parece que me caiu do céu, era bem alto, um enfermeiro que mora ali, ele subiu na árvore e conseguiu alcançar ela, mas ela caiu, escorregou, porque o animalzinho estava super assustado. O homem ficou ali com a cachorra e não saiu. Eu pedi: ‘o senhor por favor, tira ela daí porque senão a gatinha não consegue sair’. Ele não tirou, ele ficou ali o tempo inteiro. Quando esse rapaz conseguiu chegar até ela, ela resvalou por entre as mãos dele, e bateu com uma violência muito grande no chão. Dois dias depois ela foi para a clínica e não voltou mais, e eu choro até hoje. Ela era minha companheira. Eu pedi para o condomínio para que botasse um aviso ali para que ele não soltasse a cachorra, quando a gatinha estava no hospital eu pedi pra que eles fizessem isso, pra que não saíssem com ela sem a coleira... era um direito que eu tinha. Então, nesses 13 dias, cada dia é uma igreja e aí faz a festa. De uma igreja para outra. Aí tem as pessoas, cantam, aquelas coisas. Eles levam a Santa para a casa das pessoas. Aí eles chegam e falam: "A Santa hoje está indo na 305 Sul, na casa da fulana de tal. Palmas para fulana!” É igual a cidade do interior mesmo. Tem as características de uma cidade grande e pequena. No mês de maio todo ano tem uma procissão com a imagem de Nossa Senhora de Fátima, aqui à noite, olha nossa quadra, isso é deste ano, todas as noites, em um bloco em um dos apartamentos nas quadras 214, 215, 216, 415 e 416, a imagem de Nossa Senhora de Fátima, circula nos blocos, reza-se o terço e, depois, a gente sai em procissão, levando a imagem com velas, para levar para o outro apartamento que aceitou organizar e fazer a homenagem a Nossa Senhora. Ageing populations in the UK and Brazil have created challenges in how to best design urban environments that support and promote everyday social engagement and healthy urban living for older people. The ageing-in-place agenda has become an important issue in redefining policy for older people suggesting that the preferred environment for older adults to age is in the community, where they can remain active, engaged, socially connected, and independent. Yet successfully ageing in place is dependent on older adults having the place-based supports for social participation, mobility and active living.

The resident perspectives presented in this book have provided an interesting insight into some of the challenges and opportunities of ageing across different urban, social and cultural contexts. Whilst common themes emerged from some of the photographs and quotes, the interpretation of those themes often differed across the case study cities, revealing the relationship between ageing and the urban environment to be nuanced and complex.

Understanding these experiences are important if we are to develop interventions and solutions at a city and community level across the developing and developed world. The design of age-friendly cities and communities requires integrating a sense of place which is broader than the delivery of physical and material interventions, and includes access to supports for active participation, opportunities to build and sustain social networks, and assuming a meaningful role in the community. The aim of this book has been to present the voice of older adults in the research. The photographs and narratives are part of a comprehensive analysis of older adultsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; experiences across the UK and Brazil. This data is being used in the project to support the development of a set of recommendations and guidelines that promote cities and communities that are age friendly. In doing so, we are working towards the design of resources and guidelines to support the delivery of age-friendly communities.
