Koncept; Szorongás A thaiföldi író, Prabda Yoon Toll zárójelbe téve című novellájában a főhős arról mesél, hogy milyen is művészeti egyetemen tanulni. „Manapság már nem elég, ha csak ül ott az ember és aktokat rajzol” – írja. „Kell, hogy legyen ‚koncepciód’”. Leírja azt is, hogy az évfolyamtársai mind „teljesen odavoltak a konceptekért. Minden áldott nap az iskola falain kívül bóklásztak koncepciókra vadászva.

Mégis mi köze lehet egy bangkoki író vicces elmélkedésének – tehetjük fel a kérdést – egy budapesti művészhez, akitől amúgy nem állnak távol az aktok és kivételesen jól is rajzol? Hiszen globalizált korunk állandóan hangoztatott befolyása ilyen távolságra azért csak mégsem hathat ki?

exceptionally well – from Budapest? Surely, despite the much-trumpeted impact of our current globalised era, things cannot go that far? Albert find concepts and histories that are buried or hidden in the world around us that, once unearthed or unlocked, and then represented can tell us something about ourselves and the society we live in. Concepts are not abstractions to him, but rather reveal themselves as physical presences, narratives, histories and cultural codes that can be deconstructed and reassembled into subtly provocative works of art.

Adam Albert’s exhibition Never take a trip alone (2011), is in many ways exemplary of the way in which he works. spaces are represented via 3-D perspective ‘peepshow’ boxes (popular during the seventeenth century), engravings, drawings and a contemporary animated 3-D digital rendering of the same spaces. The experience of viewing this is both an experience of change and the unchanging. In art-historical terms something like time travel and yet simulta-

Hogy mindezzel mire megyünk, az már a nézőpontunktól függ. Bizonyos szempontból a két szürke szoba tanulmányozása megismétli azt az élményt, amikor kiállításra megyünk egy művészeti galériába: próbálunk magunk körül mindennek jelentőséget tulajdonítani, miközben kínoz minket a szorongás, mert meg akarjuk találni az elemek „helyes” értelmezését, meglelni bennük egyfajta „tudást”, egyfajta „igazságot”.

neously an eternal return to the same grey, rectilinear spaces, that, ironically, become more and more abstracted the more times you visit them and the more the representation of them seeks to add detail, to tease and please the eye. In this way, two people who, in different ways, changed cultural perspective over time (Humboldt championed a holistic vision of knowledge, a kind of global perspective; Goethe, as Pankaj Mishra wrote recently, was part of a movement that founded ‘a national perspective founded on aesthetic achievement’), are implicated in more visible changes in the artistic means of representing perspective over time. Perspective, like culture, like knowledge is a constructed phenomenon. And, of course, all this is merely a gloss. Concepts are everywhere. One is invited to consider evolving concepts of optics over time as well as subject–object relations, to name just two arenas of thought that Albert opens up.

Where you go with it all, of course, depends on your point of view. In a way, this study of two grey rooms replicates the experience of visiting an exhibition in an art gallery: we look for significance in everything around us and suffer too the anxiety of wanting to find the ‘correct’ interpretation of those elements; to find in them, perhaps, some sort of ‘knowledge’, some sort of ‘truth’.

That is certainly something of which Albert is fully conscious. In the past he has described his process as one of taking objects that convey a clear message (a globe, a street sign, a map, the decoration on a tray),

Both exhibitions pivot on the manipulation of materials to bring out a variety of symbolic and cultural histories and meanings.

At Paks, The Narcissism of Power (Bones of Buchephalus) (2017), features the skeleton of a horse, bought by Bertalan Székely, professor of anatomy at the Royal Academy of Drawing in Pest (now the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts, where Albert teaches) to that institution during the latter par t of the nineteenth century as an essential tool for artistic study. It stands in Paks, at once deceased and immor tal, essential and redundant, apparently staring into a sheet of onyx (the kind of material used to decorate Art Deco buildings), held, like a mirror, in the kind of rough metal frame that articulates modular modernism. It is as if a natural history display has somehow infiltrated a builder’s merchant’s store. And yet, for much as that vision is humorous, it also reveals the trace of certain received ideas of how we order the world: the place of construction materials and the place of animal skeletons in the world today. It speaks of a received artistic language of power and vanity: the equestrian monument and the reflected image. And it speaks of redundancy: if the bones are here, they are not

Yet Albert’s art is not set out to be a trigger for some sort of existential crisis. While fields such as epistemology and metaphysics are implicated, they are not the essence of his output. And there is no need to see the psychiatrist yet.

the metal rods and you move from images of classical sculptures (of the kind you might find in an artschool anatomy class) to models of what look like monuments and modernist architecture. And you, the viewer, are pushed to turn the material connection of the rods into a conceptual connection, all the while wondering if this is merely an index of the artist’s interests or references (surely a ‘mood board’ in contemporary parlance), or a study of some greater objective whole.

More than anything it is like flatpack furniture: it is preconstructed, but the assembly is down to you.

Adam Albert himself constructed the Library of Craftsmanship (2017) a four-metre-high modular structure that formed the centrepiece of the Paks exhibition. In part of the work is a monument to Béla Sámsondi Kiss, a Hungarian architectural engineer who invented a ‘clever concrete’ construction technique during the 1940s that could have been a cheap and practical alternative to the prefabricated concrete panels used to fuel Hungary’s postwar reconstruction.

Nem tárgyakban vagy műalkotásokban lakoznak, hanem a művész, egy tárgy és a többé-kevésbé cinkos néző kapcsolatában. És, mint annak mind Yoon, mind Albert tudatában vannak, a koncepciók teljes mértékben a kapcsolódásaikban élnek.

knowledge transmitted to and retained within the people who made it: we are left wondering, does craftsmanship lie in objects or in people? The etymology of the word suggests the latter, but it is a commonplace to see it in the former. But above all there is a sense in which Albert’s art, for all its referencing of scientific or cultural systems, is a profoundly humanist one. It is a social world constructed of human actions and human thoughts, where constructs and concepts slide over each other, sometimes aligning and sometimes in flux.

There is no doubt, as Prabda Yoon’s art student recognised, that concepts are slippery, subjective things. They reside not in objects or artworks but in a strange relationship between the artist, an object and a moreor-less complicit viewer. And as both Albert and Yoon recognise, concepts are entirely relational beings.

Michel Foucault ugyanis rámutatott arra, hogy nemcsak a tárgyi kultúra, hanem az eszmetörténet is értelmezhető az archeológia szempontjai szerint. Ez a fajta új archeológia aztán komoly karriert futott be nemcsak a történettudomány, hanem a művészettörténet berkeiben is. Ehhez a karrierhez nagymértékben hozzájárult az is, hogy a relativitás és a relativizmus posztmodern szempontrendszere nagy hangsúlyt fektetett a tudományos és a történelmi objektivitás kritikájára, ami együtt járt a szubjektivitás és a személyes perspektívák felértékelődésével. Albert Ádám legújabb kiállításának címe, a Melancholy of the Disconstructed Meaning1 is a huszadik század utolsó harmadába repíti a nézőt, hiszen a dekonstrukció egy olyan értelmezési stratégia, amely a nagy irodalmi, filozófiai és politikai struktúrák ideológiai összetevőit veszi górcső alá úgy, hogy a struktúrák elemeinek viszonyrendszerén keresztül mutat rá a struktúra alkotóinak motivációira. 2

A paksi kiállítás középpontjában például egy titokzatos épület áll, melynek formavilága és minimalizmusa konstruktivista allúziókat kelt, miközben a neve Library of Craftsmanship, vagyis a kézművesség, és átvitt értelemben a mesterségbeli tudás könyvtára, ami nemcsak a könyvtár gazdag szimbolikus mezejét hozza játékba, de a teória és a praxis, a szellem és az anyag, a knowledge és a skill, avagy a sophia és a techné sokoldalú dialektikájára is épít. A modernista jellegű épület egyik nyílását például egy kazettás üvegablak tölti ki, amelynek különös, lombikokat idéző motívumai éppúgy utalhatnak a modern kémiára, mint az alkímiára. Egy másik ablakban pedig egy üveg armatúrát idéző dombormű jelenik meg, amely speciális falazó technikával (gipszbeton) készült csakúgy, mint a különös építmény egésze. A gipszbeton amúgy magyar találmány, furfang betonként is ismeretes, és Sámsondi Kiss Béla 3 fejlesztette ki az 1930-as években. A lényege az, hogy a betont előre gyártott és műanyag merevítőkkel rögzített gipszlapok közé öntik, ahol a gipsz erős nedvszívó hatásának köszönhetően a beton nagyon gyorsan megszilárdul. A végeredmény pedig egy elegáns, könnyűszerkezetes, de nagy teherbírású és esztétikus (márvány simaságú) beton struktúra, ami ráadásul környezetbarát is, hiszen csak minimális fazsaluzást igényel.

and historic objectivity had a major role in this, and this change was also accompanied by the appreciation of subjectivity and personal perspectives. The title of Ádám Albert’s newest exhibition is the Melancholy of the Disconstructed Meaning1, which also transports the spectators back to the last third of the twentieth century since deconstruction is an interpretative tool, which examines the ideological components of great literary, philosophical and political structures in a way that through analysing the network of structural elements, it sheds light on the motives of those who created 2

the structures. This is the ideological and logical context in which Ádám Albert’s structures can be interpreted. However, the elements and network of these structures also contain secrets, personal stories, unusual and not easily decodable phenomena. Moreover, Albert does not only build upon the

interplay between the structures of meanings and phenomena but on the attractiveness, formal build-up and design, as well, since he designs and orchestrates particular elements in compliance with aesthetic considerations.

The focus of the exhibition in Paks is a mysterious building, whose shape and minimalism create constructivist allusions, while its title Library of Craftsmanship refers to a librar y of handicraf ts and craf tsmanship in a metaphorical sense. It does not only allude to the rich symbolic field of the library, but also builds upon the multifaceted dialectics of theory and practice, spirit and matter, knowledge and skill, or sophia and techne. Some of the openings of this modernist building display stained-glass windows, whose strange vial-like motifs could just as well refer to modern chemistry as to alchemy. In another window, there is a relief resembling a glass light fixture, which has been created with the help of a special masonr y technique (“frozen” concrete), just like the rest of this peculiar building.

esztétikus, állványzatra emlékeztető „tárlók” is, amelyeken különleges fényképek, ambrotípiák láthatók, amelyek egy 19. századi eljárással (a szegény ember dagerrotípiája) készültek. Az állványzatok azonban önmagukban is érdekesek, hiszen egyrészt segédeszközök, másrészt viszont önálló, konstruktivista jellegű strukturális esztétikummal is bírnak. Ráadásul segédeszköz mivoltukban a szocialista Magyarország vizuális kultúráját is felidézik, hiszen erőteljesen emlékeztetnek a hetvenes évek szögvasból készített virágtartóira, amelyek szinte minden háztartásban megtalálhatók voltak.

A múzeumi „virágtartók”, a muzeológiai és építészettörténeti viszonylatok, valamint a dekonstruktív esztétika együttesen a mikrotörténet felé terelik az eszmei horizontot, amit az is erősít, hogy Albert Ádám bevallottan vonzódik az Annales szellemisége felé. Az Annales iskola a történettudomány berkeiben nagyjából a hétköznapok, a technika és a technológia történetével fonódik össze, ami múzeumi kontextusban azt a kérdést is felveti, hogy vajon hogyan is nézne ki egy ilyen szempontú művészettörténet, miközben jelen esetben az talán még izgalmasabb, hogy hogyan is néz ki egy ilyen szempontú művészet.4 Albert életműve, és különösen annak második fele, amely Goethe és Humboldt dolgozószobájától Sámsondi Kiss Béla „múzeumáig” ível, attól lesz különösen izgalmas, hogy éppen egy ilyen fajta „Annales Art”-ként értelmez-

tured but heavy-duty and aesthetic (marble-smooth) concrete structure, which is also very environment-friendly, as hardly any wood is used for creating formwork for the concrete.

The empty “library”, devoid of shelves and books, creates an eerie effect in itself, even without the puzzling information fragments, since it equally resembles a modernist house and the model of a post-modern, deconstructive museum. Moreover, it is actually presented in a postmodern gallery, more precisely exhibition space, i.e.

Kunsthalle, which was transformed into a gallery from the building of a factory. The ambivalent, museum-like atmosphere of the whole exhibition is further reinforced by the spaciously arranged and very aesthetic “showcases” which resemble frames. They present special photographs, ambrotypes (the poor men’s version of daguerreotypes) created using a 19 th century procedure. The frames, however, are interesting in their own right since, on the one hand, they are aids, but on the other hand, they have an air of individual constructivist structural aesthetics. As an aid, they allude to the visual cul-

hető, amely az olasz mikrotörténelemhez5 hasonlóan nem pusztán az egyedi esetekre fókuszál, hanem az olyan nagy, „mitikus” struktúrákat is vizsgálja, mint a technológia és a tudomány. Albert művészeti programja így olyan életművekkel állítható párhuzamba, mint Mark Dion vagy Kader Attia munkássága, akik szokatlan, meglepő és látszólag kaotikus és irracionális archívumokat építenek fel. Egy ilyen fajta, nem szokványos archívum sejlik fel a paksi ambrotípiákon megjelenő tárgyakon keresztül is. Az egyik állványzaton látható fényképeken nyilazó férfi izmokat feltáró, anatómiai szobra jelenik meg. A másikon pedig három emlékmű makettje, és az azokról készült fényképek is, amelyek az emlékművek allegorikus kultúráját és a geometriai stúdiumokat is megidézik. A két állványzat így együttesen az emberi test kulturális leképezését és funkcióját, biológiai és politikai szerepeit hozza játékba a klasszikus és kora modern társadalmak történelmi heroizmusának felidézésével, miközben a művészeti stúdiumok szemléltető eszközei arra is utalnak, hogy a történelem ábrázolása is csupán a design egy formája, amit az esztétika törvényei nagymértékben meghatároznak.

A harmadik állványzaton négy még rejtélyesebb tárgy, egy gőzgép, egy kutya szobrocska, egy koponya és egy babérkoszorú látható, amelyek tovább tágítják a történelmi horizontot. Maguk a tárgyak, illetve hordozójuk, az ambrotípia együttesen a szürrealizmus és a démodé, vagyis az elfeledett és épp ezért érdekes dolgok kultusza felé mutat. Sőt a gőzgép és az elemire bomló koponya kapcsán akár még a steampunkra is asszociálhatunk, ami a Felvilágosodás korának kultúráját házasítja összes a modern, alternatív valóságokat generáló sci-fivel. ture of socialist Hungary since they closely resemble the plant stands manufactured from angle-iron in the 1970s, which used to be present in almost all households.

The “plant stands” in the museum and also the museological and architectural relations together with the deconstructive aesthetics point the ideological horizon in the direction of microhistory, which is also reinforced by the fact that Ádám Albert is admittedly attracted to the ideas of Annales. Within the study of history, the Annales school is associated with the study of everyday life and the histor y of engineering and technology, which, within the context of the museum, also poses the question what art history having such orientation would be like, or perhaps what is even more exciting in the present context: what art hav4

ilar fashion to Italian micro-history 5, does not focus on specific cases, but examines such great “mythical” structures as science and technology. Thus, a parallel can be drawn between Albert’s artistic program and oeuvres such as Mark Dion’s or Kader Attia’s work, who build unusual, surprising and seemingly chaotic and irrational archives. Such a peculiar archive seems to be created from the objects depicted by the ambrotypes in Paks. The photographs in one of the frames present an anatomical statue showing the muscles of an archer.

Another frame displays the models of three memorials and photographs of them, which evoke the allegoric culture of monuments as well as studies in geometry. The two frames together create an interplay between the cultural representation and function of the human body, its biological and political roles, through allusions to the historic heroism of classical and early modern societies. At the

same time, the visual aids presented, which are used in the study of art, make reference to the fact that the representation of history is only a form of design, largely determined by the rules of aesthetics.

The third frame presents four even more mysterious objects: a steam machine, a statue of a dog, a skull, and a laurel wreath, which expand the historical horizon even further. The objects themselves and their carrier medium the ambrotypes together point towards surrealism, démodé, that is the cult of forgotten and, therefore, interesting things. Moreover, the steam machine and the disintegrating skull might even remind us of steampunk, which attempts to connect the culture of the age of Enlightenment with modern science fiction, generating alternative realities. The spectator might have the feeling as if Albert recreated the alternative, surrealist reality of the 1920–30s using the historiographic tools of the 1960–70s in accordance with the popular narratives of the 21st century. Within this perspective, the montage and the unusual dream-like associations also connect to Borges’s “Chinese encyclopaedia”, which was made famous by Foucault when he showed that the language of the archive and the order of discourse greatly determine knowledge itself 6. Just like a “Chinese encyclopaedia” is unusual for European readers, Albert’s taxonomy is not easy to decipher either. This difficulty, however, the complexity of interpretation

and decoding sets another layer of time in motion: the postmodern discourse of modern historicism, which also influences Attia and Dion. At this point neither the Enlightenment or modernity nor their locally different forms create excitement but people themselves, the perspective of the individual, which then directs attention to the politics of remembrance, the problems of individual

Ez a nehézség, a dekódolás, az értelmezés komplexitása azonban az idő újabb, Attiara és Dionra is ható rétegét hozza mozgásba, az új historizmus posztmodern diskurzusát, amikor is már nem a Felvilágosodás vagy a modernitás, illetve annak lokálisan eltérő formái lesznek izgalmasak, hanem maga a személy, azaz az individuum perspektívája, ami viszont az emlékezetpolitika, az egyéni és a kollektív emlékezet problematikája felé tereli a figyelmet. Ez a problematika ráadásul ma, a technológiai konvergencia és az on line véleményformálás korszakában egyre markánsabban határozza meg a Homo Sapiens kultúráját és kommunikációját. A kiállítás további elemeinek értelmezéséhez így az is egy fontos adalék lehet, hogy Albert Ádám ma azon a tanszéken7 dolgozik, ahol egykor Barcsay Jenő és Székely Bertalan is tanított.

and collective memory. This problem defines the culture and communication of Homo Sapiens more and more markedly, especially today, in the age of technological convergence and online opinion-shaping. Therefore, the fact that Ádám Albert currently teaches at the department7 where Jenő Barcsay and Bertalan Székely used to teach might be an important piece of data in deciphering further elements of the exhibition.

A big skeleton in a museum hall usually directs spectators’ thoughts towards natural sciences; in the Gallery in Paks however, Albert presents the skeleton of that particular horse which was bought by Bertalan Székely. This evokes associations with the milieu of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts: on the one hand, with the science of anatomy, and on the other, with the topos of the artist-scientist conducting experiments in chronophotography. Despite this, the skeleton facing the onyx slabs might also recall science fiction or the culture of quasi scientific body snatcher horror movies.

Egy nagy csontváz egy múzeumi térben általában a természettudomány irányába tereli a gondolatokat, Albert azonban egészen konkrétan a Székely Bertalan által vásárolt ló csontvázat mutatja be a Paksi Képtárban, ami a Magyar Képzőművészeti Egyetem miliőjére enged asszociálni: egyrészt az anatómia tudományára, másrészt pedig a kronofotográfiai kísérleteket folytatató akadémikus művész toposzára. Ennek ellenére a csontváz az ónix lapokkal szembeállítva a sci-fi, illetve a tudományos hangvételű testrablós horrorfilmek kultúráját is felidézheti.

A csontvázra „ragasztott” cím, a rendszertani besorolás, a Bucephalus csontjai pedig a történelem és a mítoszok felé tereli az olvasatot, hiszen Albert Nagy Sándor lovának nevét használja. A legendás hadvezéren keresztül pedig megjelennek a 19. századi művészet legmagasabbra értékelt műfajai is: a történeti festmény és a lovas szobor. A „legendás ló” azonban nem a hallgatókkal és nem is a nézőkkel néz farkasszemet, hanem egy csiszolt ónix „tükörrel”, ami már az ókorban jól ismert és használt féldrágakő volt, amelyből díszítőlapokat és faragványokat egyaránt készítettek. A tükörsimára csiszolt lap önmagában azonban nem az ókori fürdők és nem is a barokk wunderkammerek hangulatát idézi fel, hanem inkább magának a természetnek tart tükröt, amikor a hirtelen megszilárduló, kavargó mikrokristályos kvarc esztétikáját árasztja magából. Ez az esztétika a Felvilágosodás kora óta a fenségessel kapcsolódik össze, aminek emberi, pszichológiai dimenziói a romantika korszakában váltak a festészet egyik meghatározó elemévé Caspar David Friedrichtől William Turnerig ívelően. A fenséges romantikus esztétikáját aztán az amerikai absztrakt expresszionizmus fedezte fel újra, és Jean-Francois Lyotard értelmezésében vált a reneszánsz humanizmusának és a Felvilágosodás racionalizmusának kritikáját mozgató szellemi energiává.8 Albert szempontjából azonban az sem érdektelen, hogy a növényi és a krisztallográfiai struktúrák esztétikai karrierje a

This legendary general creates allusions to the most highly valued genre of 19 th century art: historical paintings and equestrian statues. The “legendary horse”, however, does not face the listeners or the spectators but stares into a polished onyx “mirror”, which was a well-known and often used semiprecious stone already in antiquity, often used for ornamental slabs or carvings, as well. The mirror-like polished slab in itself does not merely allude to the atmosphere of ancient bathhouses or to baroque cabinets of wonder, but it holds a mirror to nature itself by exuding the aesthetics of the quickly solidifying, whirling microcrystalline quartz. This aesthetic has been associated with the sublime since the age of Enlightenment, whose human, psychological dimensions became determining features of painting at the age of Romanticism, from Caspar David Friedrich to William Turner. The Romantic aesthetic of the sublime was rediscovered by American abstract expressionism, and according to Jean-Francois Lyotard, it became the intellectual energy fostering the criticism aimed at the humanism of Renaissance and 8

the rationalism of Enlightenment. It is also interesting from Albert’s perspective that the aesthetic career of plant and crystallographic structures coincided with the closer observation, description, and classification

of these structures. In view of the fact that modern capitalism held representation and marketing in high regard, it is not surprising that these “natural” structures became incorporated into the most prestigious symbols of capitalist wealth and power: the skyscrapers of the beginning of the 20 th century.

Nevertheless, Ádám Albert manufactures not only mirrors out of precious stones but bookshelves, as well; still, his activities are not primarily inspired by modern skyscrapers. In his 2016 exhibition titled Taxography, the bookshelf made of polished and encrusted stone slabs did not appear to be an elegant article created for personal use; it was more like as if it were the monument of the shelf itself. At the same time, the frames were conveniently made of iron, creating a strange, ambivalent effect. The title of the work, Flat-pack landscape (Vanishing point), also added significant layers of meaning, as on the one hand, it recalled the DIY culture of IKEA and, on the other, confronted the phenomena of breaking and vanishing with the geometry of the classical perspective in a postmodern way. Instead of a classical landscape, we were left with a geometric pattern, which, because of its “material”, still evoked natural associations since we saw white Carrara marble and blue quartzite, whose metamorphic, crystalline structure pleases the eye. Another piece of Taxography, titled Pure Pragmatism, used a similarly complex minimalist approach; it was made up of 18 pieces of wooden book

századforduló idején egybeesett e struktúrák alaposabb megfigyelésével, leírásával és rendszerbe foglalásával.9 A reprezentációra és a marketingre mindig is sokat adó modern kapitalizmust ismerve pedig az sem meglepő, hogy ezek a „természetes” struktúrák is beépültek a kapitalista gazdagság és hatalom legnagyobb volumenű szimbólumaiba, a huszadik század elejei felhőkarcolókba.

Albert Ádám azonban nemcsak tükröt, hanem könyvespolcot is készít drága kövekből, de ilyen irányú tevékenységét mégsem elsősorban a modern felhőkarcolók inspirálják.

A Taxográfia című 2016-os kiállításának csiszolt és inkrusztrált kőzetlapokból álló könyvespolca nem elegáns használati tárgynak tűnik, inkább olyan mintha a polc emlékművét látnánk, miközben a tartóelemek praktikusan vasból készültek, ami fura, ambivalens hatást eredményez. A mű címe, a Lapraszerelt tájkép (Enyészpont) is jelentős mértékben hozzáad a jelentéshez, ugyanis felidézi egyrészt az IKEA DIY kultúráját, másrészt a törés és az enyészet jelenségét a klasszikus perspektíva geometriájával konfrontálja posztmodern szellemben. Klas�szikus tájkép helyett azonban csak geometrikus mintát kapunk, ami azonban „anyagából” adódóan mégis naturális asszociációkat kelt, hiszen fehér carrarai márványt és kék kvarcitot látunk, amelyeknek metamorf, kristályos struktúrája önmagában is szemet gyönyörködtető. Hasonlóan komplex minimalizmussal dolgozik a Taxográfia egy másik darabja, a Pure Pragmatism című munka is, amely 18 darab fa olvasóállványból épül fel, és egyrészt a tudás esztétikumát, másrészt hétköznapi tárgyaink inherens geometrikus „strukturalizmusát” is kiemeli. A polc és az olvasás maga pedig a művészettörténet perspektívájában átvezet a személyes archeológia folyamatához, annak történetiségéhez is, hiszen Albert a tudás rendszerének egyik lehetséges szimbólumaként Goethe és Humboldt szobái (Never Take a Trip Alone, 2011) óta újra és újra alkalmazza a könyvespolcot.

stands and emphasised, on the one hand, the aesthetic of knowledge and, on the other, the inherent geometric “structuralism” of our everyday objects. The shelf and the act of reading itself take us to the process of personal archaeology and its historicity, as well, as Albert has been using the bookshelf over and over again as a possible symbol of the system of knowledge since the creation of Goethe’s and Humboldt’s studies (Never Take a Trip Alone, 2011).

The owl, sitting on a high shelf also relates to this strange and eerie synthesis of the librar y, histor y of ideas, and taxonomy, providing an obvious historic reference to Minerva’s owl. The stuffed “real” Tyto Alba, in other words barn owl, is titled the Nightwatch of Anxiety, which might recall either Rembrandt’s Night Watch or the magical Night Watch of post-soviet fantasy.

The

owl, however, is not only a symbol or a borrowed image: its history, its story, its “birth” is closely tied to Albert’ destiny since the bird in question has been found on the highway, killed. This “personal link” and uniqueness put the institutes of the museum and the archive into a different light, since the barn owl does not only represent its own destiny but its whole species and the cultural role of this species, which adds further layers to the melancholy of the deconstructed meaning. A similar personal starting-point can be identified at the centre of his earlier big exhibition titled Bauxite-crisis, which was built around the artist’s special

collection of aluminium trays. In the exhibition space, these trays were presented, on the one hand, as archaeological findings in the form of prints, which took the viewers back to Romanticism and Classicism, the golden age of archaeology. Next to them, however, a brilliant photograph was also displayed, which showed the figure of a smelter next to a house of cards built out of aluminium trays, delineating the historic dimensions of the crisis with reference to the land of aluminium. The Hungarian People’s Republic, owing to its significant bauxite deposits, became the eleventh greatest aluminium manufacturer of the world by the end of the 1950s, and it could have achieved an even higher rank if the Soviets had not taken the majority of the Hungarian alumina out of the countr y because they wanted this strategically impor tant (aeroplane and rocket industry) metal to be manufactured in Russian smelts. Therefore, Hungary became an alumina superpower, and the Hungarian aluminium industry, which used Soviet technology, started to decline slowly. This process reached its peak around the change of regime in Hungary, when alumina plants and aluminium smelts started to close down, one after the other. The outdated technology and amortization led to the red sludge disaster in 2010 in Devecser, when the lye used for the purification of bauxite flooded the settlement causing serious personal injuries and environmental damage. and in a very subtle way by placing living plant structures on an iron plant stand. The aluminium trays themselves do not really recall heavy industry; they rather evoke the

kai őrségét.10 A bagoly azonban nem csak egy szimbólum, nemcsak egy átvett kép: története, keletkezése, „születése” összefonódik Albert sorsával, hiszen egy autósztrádán talált, elütött lényről van szó. Ez a „személyesség” és ez az egyediség egyúttal a múzeum és az archívum intézményét is más megvilágításba helyezi, hiszen a gyöngybagoly nem csak fajtáját és fajtájának kulturális szerepét, de saját egyéni sorsát is reprezentálja, ami további rétegekkel gazdagítja a dekonstruált jelentés melankóliáját. kiállításnak, a Bauxit-krízisnek is, ami a művész alumínium tálca gyűjteményére épült. A kiállítótérben ezek a tálcák egyrészt archeológiai leletekként, nyomat formájában jelentek meg, ami a romantika és a klasszika archeológia hőskorába repített vissza. Mellettük azonban felbukkant egy zseniális fotó is, amelyen az alumínium tálcákból alkotott kártyavár mellett egy olvasztár alakja látható, aki a krízis történeti dimenzióit jelöli ki az alumínium országára utalva. A Magyar Népköztársaság ugyanis jelentős bauxit-vagyonának köszönhetően az 1950-es évek végére a világ tizenegyedik legnagyobb alumíniumtermelője lett, és még sokkal előkelőbb helyezést is elérhetett volna, ha a szovjetek nem szállítják el egy államközi egyezmény keretein belül a magyar timföld nagyobb részét, hogy a

Such an element is, for example, the globe, photographed from a strange angle above, which might either represent the global context of Bauxite-crisis or might have an epistemological meaning, as well, in that it focuses on how representation is mediated. stratégiai jelentőségű (repülőgép és rakéta-ipar) fémet inkább oroszországi kohók állítsák elő. Így végül leginkább timföld-nagyhatalom lettünk, és a szovjet technológiára épülő magyar alumíniumipar lassan hanyatlani kezdett, ami éppen a rendszer váltás idején tetőzött, amikor sorra zártak be a timföldgyárak és az alumíniumkohók. A technológia elavulása és amortizációja vezetett végül a 2010-es devecseri vörösiszap katasztrófához is, amikor is a bauxit tisztítására használt marónátron öntötte el a települést súlyos személyi sérüléseket és környezeti károkat okozva. Albert azonban csak igen áttételesen, finoman reflektál erre a környezeti krízisre vas virágtar tóra helyezett élő növényi struktúráival.

of the material of the Descriptio exhibition, where a black, a grey and a white globe also appear with the inscription “Heimat” (homeland) in Gothic script, which, because of the colour coding, might set memories of Nazism in motion, as well. This exhibition also presented world maps with the caption “context is determined by interpretive strategies”, which might as well be one of the slogans of new historicism or new art history criticising totalitarian approaches. Besides the world maps and globes, the filing cabinet and the collection of bell jars alluding to museums of

Az alumíniumtálcák sem a nagyipart, hanem inkább a hatvanas-hetvenes évek hétköznapi, vizuális kultúráját idézik fel, és helyezik egyfajta archeológiai kontextusba.

Ez a kontextus ráadásul utalhat a múzeum és a muzeológia antimodernista kritikájára is, amely nagyjából a szürrealistákkal kezdődött, majd Marcel Broodthaers munkásságában, és az ő „sas osztályában” vált paradigmatikussá. Broodthaers ugyanis egy fiktív múzeumi osztályt hozott létre, amelyben az általa gyűjtött különféle sasokat állította ki, amelyek a hatalmi reprezentáció, a zoológia és a populáris kultúra különféle, de mégis „személyes” metszeteit mutatták be. Sőt rámutattak arra is – a kínai enciklopédia szellemében – hogy látszólag objektív és kanonizált rendező elveink milyen mértékben szubjektívek és esetlegesek.

A struktúra tekintetében a Bauxit-krízis egyes elemei a személyes, történelmi időt is mozgásba lendítik: visszautalnak az előző kiállításra, a Descriptio-ra és az azt megelőző Never Take a Trip Alone-ra is. Ilyen elem például a szokatlan szögből, felülről fényképezett földgömb is, ami a Bauxit-krizis globális kontextusát is reprezentálhatja, de ismeretelméleti jelentése is lehet, amennyiben a reprezentáció medialitására irányítja a fókuszt. Hiszen a földgömb egy szokatlan szögből válik műtárggyá, melynek során háttérbe szorul leképező funkciója, amit az is felerősít, hogy az ezüstös csillogású giclée print a dagerrotípiákra emlékeztet. Ez a szokatlan „szög”, ez a meglepő nézőpont jellemzi a Descriptio kiállítás anyagának egészét is, ahol egy fekete, egy szürke és egy fehér földgömb is megjelenik, melyen a „Heimat” (haza) felirat látható gót betűkkel, amely a színkódból adódóan a nácizmus emlékezetét is mozgásba lendítheti. De láthatók voltak a kiállításon világtérképek is a „context is determined by interpretive strategies” felirattal, ami viszont a totalizáló szemléletmódokat kritizáló új historizmus vagy az új művészettörténet egyik jelmondata is lehetne akár. A világtérképek és a földgömbök mellett a kartotékszekrény és a természettudományi múzeumokat idéző üvegbúra kollekció is inkább tudományos, mint politikai irányba tereli a Descriptio jelentését, miközben a bemutatott „anyag” hiánya (a

natural history turn the meaning of Descriptio to a scientific rather than political direction. At the same time, the lack of presented “material” (there is nothing under the bell jars, and the filing cabinet only represents itself as a structure) creates an uncanny effect. However, emptiness enhances the kind of self-reflection that evokes the spirit of the Art of Describing, the 17 th centur y Dutch art of description and narration. It is the kind of Dutch naturalism and empiricism in the light of which, in “Northern” developed bourgeois societies, the function of both science and art was cataloguing, classifying and ruling, that is, exercising power and representing it.11 Something, or more precisely someone, still appears in this self-reflective and objectless, empty “description”: the scientist himself, the explorer who is portrayed in exotic surroundings in an old photograph. The figure of the explorer takes us even further back in time, to an earlier, in a certain respect programmatic exhibition, whose title Never Take a Trip Alone refers to a topos of the age of Enlightenment: namely that noblemen of the Grand Tour never travelled alone since in order to preserve their memories and record their experiences, they took artists along.

At the centre of Never Take a Trip Alone, we do not find the scientist or the draughtsman but – with Foucault’s words – the 19 th century dispositive of knowledge: the extremely spectacular representation of Johann

búrák alatt nincs semmi és a cédulakatalógus tárlója is csupán önmagát, mint struktúrát reprezentálja) kísértetiessé teszi az egészet. Az üresség viszont erősíti azt a fajta önreflexiót, ami szellemiségében az Art of Describing-ot, azaz a leírás és az elbeszélés 17. századi holland művészetét idézi meg. Azt a holland naturalizmust és empirizmust, amelynek fényében az „északi”, fejlett polgári társadalmakban a tudomány és a művészet funkciója egyaránt a katalogizálás, a rendszerezés és az uralás volt, vagyis a hatalom gyakorlása és reprezentálása.11 Valami, illetve valaki azonban ezen túl is megjelenik az önreflektív és tárgynélküli, üres „deskripcióban”, még pedig maga

a tudós, a felfedező, aki egzotikus környezetben áll egy régi fotográfián. A felfedező alakja pedig még messzebbre vezet vissza az időben, a korábbi, bizonyos tekintetben programadó kiállításhoz, melynek címe arra a Felvilágosodás kori toposzra is utal, hogy a Grand Tour nemesei többnyire nem utaztak egyedül, hiszen emlékeik megőrzése, illetve tapasztalataik rögzítése céljából művészeket vittek magukkal: Never Take a Trip Alone.

A Soha ne utazz egyedül középpontjába azonban még sem a tudós, és még csak nem is a rajzoló, hanem úgymond – Foucault-val szólva – a tudás 19. század elejei diszpozitívja került: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe és Alexander von Humboldt dolgozószobáinak rendkívül látványos leképezése. Albert ugyanis digitális grafikákra épülő és trükkös, anamorfikus struktúráját is látni engedő, modernizált perspektíva-kabineteket hozott létre, amelyek

The two rooms, however, are not just simple representations and are not only projections of the system of knowledge of that age, as there are also two digital prints assisting the interpretation of the perspective cabinets. The prints have the captions “pictorial surface” and “representational canon” written on them besides drawings of a pair of binoculars and a library staircase. One of the prints, thus, points towards media archaeology while the other more towards the politics of aesthetics.

In connection with the latter, the possibility of a scientific-historical or a cultural-historical interpretation also arises. The former would focus on the fact that both Goethe

sidered modernist or from a scientific-his-

tific paradigm, which can essentially be contorical point of view empirical realist. After the birth of a constructivist sociology of science and Bruno Latour’s cultural anthropology 12, this particular realism, however, is not simply a “faithful” representation of nature, but such an economic and political enterprise whose sole driving force is not an interest-free thirst for knowledge. This interpretation, focusing on the critique of scientific objectivity, can be linked to the other, cultural-historical interpretation, which is associated with perspective cabinets and capitalist visual entertainment, which, from the very beginning, only focused on entertaining the public, and thus, was not

a 17. századi Hollandia kukucskálódobozait, illetve azok közül is Samuel van Hoogstraten híres szobáját idézik meg.

A 19. század elejének két sztártudósa és ismeretelméleti szempontból is meghatározó figurája közül Goethe inkább költőként vált híressé, de a természettudományok is foglalkoztatták, Humboldt pedig korának egyik legismertebb geográfusa volt, aki beutazta Dél-Amerika és Ázsia akkor még kevéssé ismert középső régióit, és számos új növényés állatfajt is leírt, melyek egy részét róla is nevezték el.

A két szoba azonban nem szimpla reprezentáció és nem is csupán a tudás akkori rendszerének leképezése, mert a kukucskálódobozokat két digitális nyomat is értelmezi, amelyeken a „pictorial surface” és a „representational canon” felirat olvasható egy látcső, illetve egy köny vtári lépcső rajzolatának társaságában. Az egyik kép így a médiaarcheológia felé mutat, a másik pedig inkább az esztétikai politika felé. Az utóbbi tekintetében ráadásul felmerül egy tudománytörténeti és egy kultúrtörténeti olvasat lehetősége is. Az előbbi azt állítja a fókuszba, hogy Goethe és Humboldt is egy bizonyos tudományos paradigma keretein belül dolgozott, ami lényegében modernistának, illetve tudománytörténeti szempontból empirikus realistának tekinthető. Ez a bizonyos realizmus azonban a konstruktivista tudományszociológia és a Bruno Latourféle kulturális antropológia12 után már nem szimplán a természet „hű” képe, hanem egy olyan gazdasági és politikai vállalkozás, amelynek nem az érdekmentes tudásvágy az egyetlen hajtóereje. Ehhez a szálhoz, a tudományos objektivitás kritikájához kapcsolható a kultúrtörténeti szál is a kukucskálódobozokkal, illetve a kapitalista látványipar megidézésével, amely azonban a kezdetektől a nép szórakoztatására fókuszált, akiket nem annyira a tudósok dolgozószobái kápráztattak el, hanem inkább az egzotikus és erotikus szcénák.

Ezzel a problémával, azaz a látványipar elvárásaival Albert is tökéletesen tisztában van, és már a kezdetektől

so much fascinated by studies of scientists, but by exotic and erotic scenes.

These problems, i.e. the expectations of the visual entertainment industry, are perfectly clear to Albert, and he has been placing great emphasis on the elegant execution of his works, that is on design and typography.

At the same time, he frequently takes a very critical stance regarding the traditional economic and political role of art, as it can be

witnessed in The Country of the Blind or in the infographics of Hunt the Key (Hunt the

nagy hangsúlyt fektet műveinek elegáns kivitelezésére, vagyis a designra és a tipográfiára, miközben gyakran kifejezetten kritikusan lép fel a művészet hagyományos gazdasági és politikai szerepének tekintetében, ahogy ezt a Vakok országa, vagy az „Ingatlanpanama” (Keresd a kulcsot: Ingatlanpanama a „legpestibb” budapesti utcában) infografikája is mutatja. Az esztétikumról és a design-ról azonban soha nem mond le, mert talán úgy gondolja, hogy a vonzó és jól áttekinthető látvány része az argumentáció hipermodern kultúrájának is. Sajátos archívumaiban, illetve „múzeumaiban” azonban a design-t és az esztétikát nem annyira a direkt, politikai, mint inkább az indirekt,

Still, he would never surrender aesthetics or design, maybe because he thinks that attractive and orderly design is a part of the hypermodern culture of argumentation. In his peculiar archives and “museums”, design and aesthetics do not really serve direct or political but rather indirect epistemological criticism, whose exact spatial and temporal location is not even easily identifiable. The starting point, Never Take a Trip Alone, seems to

ismeretelméleti kritika szolgálatába állítja, amelynek még pontos tér- és időbeli helyzetét sem könnyű lokalizálni.

A kiindulópont, a Never Take a Trip Alone mintha egy futurisztikus, alternatív jelent mutatna, a Descriptio, Bauxitkrízis, a Taxográfia és a „Melankólia” esetében azonban nehezebb belőni az időt, Albert taxonómiáinak és archívumainak idejét: letisztultságuk és funkcionalizmusuk a klasszikus modernizmust idézi, miközben rejtélyességük, titokzatosságuk inkább az irracionális antimodernizmus, illetve a modernizmus és a modernitás kritikájának levegőjét árasztja magából.13 És éppen ez a dialektika, a különféle esztétikák, illetve a mikro- és a makropolitika zavarba ejtő és elgondolkodtató keverése, valamint a történelmi és a személyes emlékezet elegyítése válik még inkább ütőképessé az elegáns és letisztult design által, ami olyan hatást kelt, mintha egy utópikus jelenben élnénk, ahol a szokatlan és egyedi történetek is ugyanolyan anyagi bázisra épülnek, amilyennel a hollywoodi scifik nagy konszernjei rendelkeznek. Egy olyan utópikus, alternatív jelenben, ahol az sem elképzelhetetlen, hogy alumínium tálcákon keresztül ismerjük meg Magyarország kultúrtörténetét és egy ónix tükörbe nézve töprengünk el az emberi tudás felépítésének természetén.

present a futuristic, alternative present, but time, the time of Albert’s taxonomies and archives, is much more difficult to determine in the case of Descriptio, Bauxite-crisis, Taxography or „Melancholy”. Their clarity and functionalism evoke classic modernism, while their mysterious and enigmatic features exude the air of irrational anti13

modernism and the critique of modernity.

It is precisely this dialectic, the perplexing and thought-provoking mixture of different aesthetics, micro and macro politics, the mixing of historical and personal remembrances made even more effective due to the elegant and pure design, which creates the effect as if we were living in a utopian present, where unusual and unique stories are built on the same material base as those owned by the great syndicates in Hollywood science-fictions. In such a utopian alternative present, it is not unimaginable that we learn about the cultural history of Hungary through aluminium trays, and we ponder about the nature of the structure of human knowledge while staring into an onyx mirror.

Az emlékezet műszaki rajza Albert Ádám művészi szemléletmódja

Albert Ádám alkotásainak egyik legfontosabb eleme maga a vizualizáció; műveiben olyan összefüggések válnak láthatóvá, amelyek ebben a formában korábban nem jelentek meg. Mindez távolról, összefoglaló megállapításként általánosítóan egyszerűnek tűnik, miközben az eddigi életműre közelebbről tekintő néző számára a vizuális eszközökkel megjelenített művészettörténeti, képelméleti utalásokból, társadalmi, gazdasági jelenségekből, vagy a kollektív emlékezet kiválasztott elemeiből kialakított komplex jelentésszövet rajzolódik ki. A vizualizáció elsősorban a bonyolult összefüggések világos megjelenítésére vonatkozik: Albert az általa következetesen épített rendszerben olyan személyes szemszögeket használ, amelyekből az egyes alkotóelemek – addig sokszor figyelemre nem méltatott tárgyak, képek vagy mintázatok – mások számára új kombinációban kerülhetnek új megvilágításba, illetve olyan eszközöket alkalmaz, amelyekkel az összefüggésekből leszűrt tudás a legtömörebb formában továbbadható. Lényegét tekintve tehát Albert Ádám művészi szemléletmódja sajátos pedagógiai rendszerre épül.

The blueprint of memory Ádám Albert’s artistic approach One of the most important elements of Ádám Albert’s works is visualisation itself. In his works, he makes relationships visible that were not present in that particular form before. From a distance, this statement appears to be a simple generalisation, while spectators viewing his oeuvre from close up can see a complex texture of meaning consisting of art historical and pictorial references, social and economic phenomena or chosen elements of collective memory represented using visual means. Visualisation primarily refers to the clear representation of complex relationships: in his consistently built system, Albert uses personal aspects from which individual components – pre-

succinct way. Essentially, Ádám Albert’s artistic approach is built upon a specific pedagogical system.

A decisive element of visualisation is determining the viewpoint, laying down the space and time coordinates for the viewers while fixing the position of the artist. Ádám Albert’s works show constant characteristics from two respects. On the one hand, almost all of his works are (possible) elements of a spatial design, regardless of the fact whether they are three-dimensional installations or two-dimensional photos or graphics. On the other hand, it appears as if he designed his works not merely for a gallery exhibition but for an imaginary (empty, white) living room. (The most suggestive and at the same time most emblematic representation of this idea was his The Model of the Idea / The Idea of the Model installation at the 2015 Leopold Bloom award. The lack of people, missing from the surrounding objects, was especially striking in this particular conceptualisation of space.) Besides creating a virtual inner space which can be transformed into reality, potential monumentality is a key concept of Albert’s visualisation: the scale of almost all of his works appears to be alterable: they can be reduced or magnified, just like maps. It holds true for many of his works that the actual work of art appears to be a model or reduced (portable)

version of a possible “life-sized” work, which under optimal (realizable) circumstances could be magnified or projected to the surrounding world.

Despite the fact that Ádám Albert’s works are built upon stiffened, “frozen” spaces in which movement is only potential and only refers to the spectators or their gaze, visualisation is a temporal process in all cases. The perspective cabinet (Perspective cabinets, 2011) modelling Humboldt’s and Goethe’s studies, which are narrative and conceptual at the same time, are emblematic representations of the method of combining space and time. Albert’s (re) constructions consist of objects having their own history and pictures carrying layers of meaning from the past under their surface; through these, time appears to enter space seamlessly, without any human interference. The elements the artist places in these frameworks, frames, and tableaus created by him are related to human memory and the idea of preserving and transmitting knowledge. The spectator can use these space- or time-fixations while constructing or reconstructing the meanings and connections.

Moreover, in his imagination, the spectator can move within the virtual memory worlds created by Albert in a way similar to moving in the grid system operated labyrinth-like Esper machine – the famous image analytic

device from Blade Runner, where information can be gained with regard to the third dimension from two-dimensional elements.

If a spectator were to view the pictures, models, or objects offered for analysis along an imaginary time line – condensed into one collection – then he might be able to identify it as a building similar to Kurt Schwitters’s Merzbau, where elements of the present and past, from a few decades or centuries ago, joined together and appeared in a new, personally motivated pedagogical cabinet of wonders. Pictures do not turn yellow or

become faded here, but as a result of their combining, they “whiten” with time, forming a cleaner, clearer structure. This is the wider context into which the white architectural elements, white objects and spaces fit.

The reason why thoughts of a unitary image and space might emerge when thinking of Ádám Albert’s oeuvre is that his way of working and his approach have been quite homogenous over the past decade. The use of technical drawings, models and typographic elements, precise execution, and a limbo between an object’s personal “handcrafted” production and the illusion of industrial manufacturing are constant characteristics. Most important, however, is the consistent application of the collector’s viewpoint and approach. The approach of the collector who does not only place the items chosen or found by him in a box or in his well-defined place, but who also passionately selects from the surrounding world (or its past) items that fit his system. With regard to collecting, Albert is not so much interested in completeness but in condensing items into a given time and space, as if he was expanding an imaginary archive with each of his works or body or works, which can provide guidelines in getting to know a particular segment of the world. is also connected to the gesture and idea of collecting, which also appears in his works (for example, Art and Power, 2015) often with critical overtones (see, Hunt the key: Globalisation and real estate in “the most emblematic Budapest street).

Symbols having historical context often

Ha a szemlélő az elemzésre felkínált képeket, maketteket, tárgyakat egy képzeletbeli időegyenes mentén, valóban egyetlen gyűjteményben összesűrítve látná, akkor talán Kurt Schwitters Merzbaujához hasonló építményként azonosíthatná, amelyben a jelen, a néhány évtizeddel vagy akár évszázaddal ezelőtti múlt elemei egymáshoz ízesülve, egy új, személyes indíttatású pedagógiai Wunderkammerben jelennek meg – a képek itt nem elsárgulnak vagy megfakulnak, hanem összekapcsolódásuk révén idővel „kifehérednek”, egyre tisztább, világosabb szerkezetet alkotnak. Ebbe a tágabb összefüggésbe illeszkednek a hófehér építészeti elemek, a fehér tárgyak és terek.

Az eddigi életmű egységes képének és terének gondolata elsősorban azért merülhet fel, mivel Albert Ádám munkamódszere és szemlélete az elmúlt évtized során homogén maradt. Folyamatos jellemzője a tervrajzok, makettek, tipográfiai elemek használata, a precíz kidolgozottság, a tárgyak személyes, „kézműves” megmunkálása és ipari előállításának illúziója közötti lebegés. Mindenekelőtt azonban a gyűjtő szemszögének és szemléletének következetes érvényesítése. Azé a gyűjtőé, aki nemcsak egy dobozban, vagy jól lehatárolt saját terében helyezi el az általa kiválasztott vagy megtalált tárgyakat, hanem aki gondosan és szenvedélyesen emeli ki a környező világból (annak múltjából) a rendszerébe illeszkedő elemeket.

appear among his visualization tools; these are often placed next to other elements of the collection redesigned and taken out of their original framework. In the installation created in 2012 in Frankfurt, we can see the palms of two hands facing upwards, holding the motif of a stylised yellow cube. The encounter of these two elements might even be interpreted as the confrontation of the organic and the geometric, which often appears in Albert’s works. However, besides these classic examples, they also allude to the posters of the 1970s, corporate emblems of the Kádár era. Albert does not evoke nostalgia with the seemingly randomly positioned (as if stencilled on the wall) pattern but creates insecurity while overwriting the memories: he creates context and demolishes it. Albert also treats typographic fragments in a similar manner, just like those pictogram elements that he used to build new systems according to his own algorithm (Pictograms, 2008, and The Country of the Blind, 2013). The elements in his collection are not accidentally found objects; all of them become part of a greater system as a result of a rigorous selection process, and they are reframed within his imaginary constructed space and corresponding time.

The catchment area of his collection spans centuries; still, within its focus is the visual world of 20 th centur y Eastern-Middle-Europe, more precisely the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

Besides transforming and re-contextualising the elements of his collection, another important visualisation tool used by Albert is the imagery of technical drawings, models (Work probe, 2014), and architectural drawings, which are all directly related to his own pedagogical field, anatomical drawing. All of the above representational methods are ways of presenting the structure, the connections, and the workings of things portrayed in a static way; they are mediation tools, which, in this specific case, become a part of finished works of art. of art can always be decoded by the spectators, as Albert always relies on such connections from art, architecture, or cultural history that are familiar or seemingly familiar to the given European, or more precisely Middle-Eastern-European population (let it

Vizualizációs eszközrendszerében gyakran megtalálhatók a történeti kontextussal rendelkező szimbólumok, amelyeket gyakran az eredeti összefüggésrendszerükből kiemelve, újraszerkesztve illeszt más gyűjtemény-elemek mellé. 2012-ben, Frankfurtban készült installációján feltűnik két felfelé tartott tenyér, benne egy stilizált, sárga kocka motívuma. A két elem találkozása akár az Albert munkáiban gyakran felbukkanó organikus és geometrikus konfrontálódásaként is értelmezhető, de klasszikus példák mellett megidézi a hetvenes évekbeli plakátok, illetve a Kádár-kori vállalati emblémák világát is. His works can be interpreted as maps portraying these connections, on which the given objects are located as imaginary geographic units. Thus, on this metaphoric map, seemingly independent objects and images can be found, which have no organic relationship with one another: still, the interpretation of the meaning of the globe and the projected image, the architectural model and the plant presuppose the symbolism of a unified map, with a single loose system of reference in the background. (See the installation titled Descriptio, 2013.) The logic of the system is determined by the artist based on such common knowledge as the pictorial world of educational visual aids, or those invisible ratios that have infiltrated the spectators’ minds more strongly than any actual memory (like the grids of a school notebook, or

Albert experiments with tools, patterns, and ratios at the borderline of the conscious and the unconscious building new models out of them, while he creates a new space for memor y which has never existed before.

a unique combination of visual methods, and at the same time, he attempts to model the working of memory.

The approach of his work could even be categorised as role modelling; parallels can be drawn with the activities of a natural scientist, an archive manager, or even a teacher. Similarly to the natural scientist, he constantly observes and seeks regularities, then places the discovered objects into his collection and classifies them. His observations of the world can be condensed into signs. Albert often poses natural and artificial worlds – plants and the environments created for them using technological tools – as opposites (see, The Model of the Idea / The Idea of the Model, 2015). In his installations, he frequently uses seemingly anachronistic projectors as technical tools; this kind of visualisation method of projection itself recalls images of projection sessions of 20 th century scientific societies, but it also draws a parallel with the technical device usage of contemporary art (see certain works of Nan Goldin or Tacita Dean).

Closely related to the role model of the natural scientist is the creator or manager of an archive; it is as if all of Albert’s works came from one monumental, imaginar y archive. This imaginary institute is located at the borderline of private and collective memory. It is not merely a product of individual memor y since all the decisions of the archive creator result from the given social-historical environment and the system of connections. Neither is it an exclusively collective phenomenon since all the elements of the archive can be explained based on the creator’s own autobiography and certain subjective decisions. Albert’s

archive is a peculiarly 21st century formation, the subject of which is primarily the 20 th century wealth of information. 20 th century storage devices such as wardrobes and filing cabinets – which can be viewed as sculptures themselves (see as a possible parallel Simon Starling's art) – play an important role in his archive. The items of his archive may not really fit our age, thereby embodying the ruins of modernism: the dead-end street of Enlightenment. Nevertheless, the fact that

A rendszer logikáját a művész határozza meg, olyan közös tudásokra alapozva, mint az iskolai szemléltetőábrák képi világa, vagy azok a láthatatlan arányok, amelyek gyakran minden emlékképnél erősebben ivódtak be a nézőbe – legyen ez egy füzet vonalazásának vagy az általános iskolai rajzórákon gyakran ábrázolt geometrikus testnek az aránya). Albert a tudatos és a tudatalatti közötti mezsgyén elhelyezkedő eszközökkel, mintákkal, arányokkal kísérletezik, belőlük új modelleket készít, miközben az emlékezet számára addig nem létezett, új teret hoz létre. Az összefüggések megjelenítésére a vizualizációs módszerek sajátos kombinációját alkalmazza, ezzel egyidejűleg tesz kísérletet az emlékezet működésének modellezésére.

Alkotásainak szemléletmódja akár szerepmodellek szerint is kategorizálható: a természettudós, az archívumkezelő és a pedagógus tevékenységével állítható párhuzamba.

A természettudóshoz hasonlóan folyamatosan megfigyel és törvényszerűségeket keres, a felfedezett tárgyakat gyűjteményébe helyezi, rendszerezi. Megfigyeléseit a világról jelekbe sűríti. Albert gyakran állítja ellentétpárba a természetes és a mesterséges világokat, a növényeket és a számukra technikai eszközökkel létrehozott környezetet (lásd: The Model of the Idea | The Idea of the Model, 2015). Installációiban technikai segédeszközként több

they are displayed suggests that by building on these ruins, a future generation might be able to return to the way of transmission of knowledge that was believed to be valid for centuries. A parallel with Albert’s retrograde strategy can be found in Mark Dion’s archive creating and arranging activities, although the difference is that while Dion usually focuses on existing objects with well-defined contexts, Albert interferes more, and apart from a few exceptions (see Bauxite-crisis, 2014), he displays more enigmatic connections.

The third ar tistic role model is the one closest to Ádám Albert’s everyday life: the approach of the teacher, where the condensation and transmission of collective knowledge also play a prominent role. Here, the pedagogical purpose provides the new context for Albert’s objects and images, which function as visual aids in this respect.

He formulates the transmittable information, prepares visual aids, and by this becomes the heir to László Moholy-Nagy’s old principles. While as a teacher of anatomy he points out invisible connections in his everyday life, in the process of the artist’s trans-
