LetterFromThePresident Dear Legacy and PJP Alumni, Well, I have been in the role as President of PJP for almost a year. I am thankful for the very warm welcome I have received from so many. Wow, what a year it has been! I am not referring to starting a new job in a global pandemic nor selling a house in Orange County, New York, while simultaneously purchasing one in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. No, I am talking about what I learned from this wonderful community called PJP and the Legacy schools from which it was founded.

I met two legendary football coaches in Coach Mich and Coach Psota. I saw in them two men who not only enjoyed winning football games but truly cared about the futures of the students with whom they came in contact. I witnessed a community, overwhelmed in grief in the passing of a beloved colleague, friend, and mentor, march on by establishing a scholarship in her memory. To date, the Stacia Ficarro scholarship has a balance of over $25,000. I observed many individual and team accomplishments on the fields, pitch, mat and track, in the gym and pool, as dedicated student-athletes persevered in a sports environment which they, their coaches and parents had never experienced. I watched Studio 38 conduct magnificent performances to such perfection, that one forgot the students were wearing special masks and remembering to sing and dance while maintaining proper social distancing protocols. And finally, I relished our teachers’ ability to endure in what was probably the most challenging year in their stellar careers in education.

As I close out my first year as President, I would be remiss if I did not recognize Father Kean for his seven years of service to Pope John Paul II High School, three as Campus Minister and four as Principal. His commitment to PJP is extraordinary. Although I have worked with Father Kean for less than one year, he is one of the finest and most supportive colleagues I have worked with during my 34-year career in education.

A Farewell Tribute to Father Kean All new institutions go through growing pains as they work to establish themselves. Pope John Paul II High School is no exception.

As a result of the merger of two existing schools in 2010, the community struggled to create an identity that incorporated the best of each school’s culture. Through seven of our ten years, we were fortunate to have a strong “influencer” to help guide us—Father Brian M. Kean.

Ordained in 2008, Fr. Kean’s first assignment was as the parochial vicar at St. Joseph’s Parish in Downingtown. In 2013 he joined the faculty at Archbishop Carroll for one year before coming to PJP. A proud graduate of Archdiocesan schools, including ConwellEgan High School, Father knew the value of a good Catholic education. Father came to PJP to serve as school minister in 2014 and quickly immersed himself into forming the unique spiritual life that has become a hallmark of the school.

Having influenced the spiritual component of PJP, when the position of principal opened up, Father accepted the challenge to influence the academic side of the equation. His tireless dedication and his extraordinary vision helped PJP to grow and maintain the academic excellence that has become the norm for our school. His four years as principal were marked by both highs and lows, but the PJP community always knew that there was a steady hand, guided by God, that kept us headed in the right direction. The struggle of the pandemic era was a test that PJP passed with the spiritual guidance and dedication to academics intact through the efforts of Father Kean.

HIS TIRELESS DEDICATION AND

Perhaps Fr. Kean’s most lasting effect on PJP will be on the students he was able to influence over his seven years. He was respected by all and was always there to answer their questions and assist them in all their successes and disappointments. His signature Friday wrapups became legendary and the trademark, “Remember to make good choices,” will echo in their memories for a lifetime.

In May, Archbishop Nelson Perez tapped Fr. Kean to become the assistant vicar for the Clergy for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Father will be missed, but PJP will move forward knowing that this influencer has set the stage for the future successes and accomplishments, rooted in God’s plan, for us all.

On June 9, 2021, the Senior Class officially became PJP Alumni. Many of those new alumni are just another branch of our Legacy Tree—A tree whose roots originated from our six legacy schools (St. Matthews, St. Patrick’s, St. Pius X, Bishop Kenrick, Archbishop Kennedy and Kennedy-Kenrick Catholic). Within this esteemed and cherished group of new alumni is a history of family members who are alumni of our legacy schools. In some families, the roots span multiple generations dating back to our oldest legacy school of St. Matthews, which opened in 1866. Many of these graduates have grandparents, aunts, uncles and siblings too numerous to present in this issue. ReligiousVocations Jack Brosius will be attending Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary

Jack Brosius, Class of 2021, will be continuing his studies at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Overbrook, majoring in Philosophy as an undergraduate and then concentrating on Theology as a post graduate. In his own words, “I will be working on the four pillars of formation, trying to figure out where almighty God wants me to be.” Jack is the first in his family’s history to ever enter the seminary. We wish Jack the best in his future endeavors as he joins our many Legacy Alums in the service of God.

“While praying and listening to our Lord, I found that he wanted me to further my discernment of the holy priesthood. PJP taught me how to handle social situations better and how to develop good friendships.”

May 21 marked a coming out of sorts. PJP was able to hold its first major event in over 15 months due to Covid restrictions. The Golfing Fore Scholarships outing welcomed 96 golfers to the beautiful Bella Vista Golf Course in Gilbertsville for an enjoyable gathering of golfers of all levels. The scramble event started at 1 o’clock and signaled a return to a level of normalcy. A buffet reception followed, along with plenty of great conversation renewing old acquaintances and making new friends.

The winning team – coming in at 14 under par – represented Bishop Kenrick well.

Classmates of the Class of 1982 – Buz Bass, Gerald Makoid, George Williamson, and Jeff Cooper took home the honors. Finishing at 11 under was the team led by Dean Fox, which included Larry Fiorini, Cory Melchior and Joe Lostracco. With a score of 10 under, the team of Bill Hunter, Matt Adamek, Naish Berran and John Mulholland took third place.

Awards were presented to Jeff Cooper for longest drive and Gerald Makoid won the closest to the pin competition.

Raising over $14,000 in scholarships funds, the outing was a huge success in our restart of our fundraising endeavors.

Stadium Update Pope John Paul II High School continues to make progress in the enhancement of its athletic complex. This year PJP received a Gift In Kind from Blue Tree Landscaping to seed, spread fertilizer, and aerate a number of the fields in the front of the campus. According to many who attended PJP athletic events this school year, the PJP fields look better this year than they have in many years. One visitor, who played on many outstanding grass fields during a very successful collegiate football career, said, “The conditions of the PJP fields are some of the best I have seen in my travels around the area high schools.” He was at PJP on this day to watch his nephew who plays lacrosse for PJP. This summer, Blue Tree Landscaping will seed, spread fertilizer and aerate the field directly behind the school building. This field is the home for Girls Field Hockey and Girls Lacrosse.

The other elements of the Stadium project continue to move forward. However, the project has been split into phases. Phase I is the purchase and installation of a flag pole for the south endzone. This project is being funded by Heather Skarbek and her family in memory of Steve Skarbek SPX ’83. Phase I will be completed this summer. Phase II is the purchase and installation of lights for the football field. The cost for Phase II is close to $550,000. As of the writing of this newsletter, PJP has almost half of the money in hand to cover the cost of Phase II. The past few years have taken a toll on the PJP Track to the point when soon it will be difficult for PJP to host track meets. As such, the refurbishment of the PJP Track is Phase III with a goal of implementing it as soon as possible.

The other components of the stadium project will also be done on a “phased in” basis. They include an additional set of bleachers, locker rooms, an Athletic Hall of Fame, an enhanced food and beverage section, and skywalk.

PJPNews PJP II STUDIO 38 PRESENTS

The Phantom of the Opera—Behind the Scenes Ever wonder what it takes to produce a show on the stage at Pope John Paul II High School? Obviously, a lot of rehearsals involving over 300 student performers, pit and stage crew led by talent-laden instructors, including the soon to be PJP Legacy Hall of Famer, Mrs. Marusia Lynn (Kennedy-Kenrick Class of ’96). But do you know what else goes on behind the scenes? If you have ever attended one of Studio 38’s shows, you may be familiar with the hundreds of volunteers, both parents and alumni (including legacy alumni), who donate their time and talents. Words cannot express the gratitude for their time spent selling tickets, soliciting sponsors and donations for the Tombola (basket raffle), running the concession area at intermissions, making lunches and dinners for those long rehearsal days, sewing and altering costumes and of course those well-known beautiful sets. Do you remember the bridge in Footloose, the boat in The King and I, or how about the car in Crazy for You? Those sets and many more from shows past were constructed or re-purposed by the “Build Dads and Moms” and this year was no exception.

Beginning in January 2020 and continuing straight through to the show dates (but with a one-year delay related to the pandemic), at all hours of the day, the “Build Dads and Moms,” armed with a hammer, saw and paint brush in hand, brought to life the sets that put you right there as if you were live on a New York stage. This year’s Phantom of the Opera featured the famous chandelier, the beautiful staircase and opera house boxes. There is no hired help, but just a group of hard-working, dedicated individuals who do not receive applause or standing ovations. Their pay and satisfaction come when they see those talented students putting smiles on the faces of the hundreds of audience members. These are our volunteers who helped make the Phantom of the Opera a spectacular success and to them we extend a sincere debt of gratitude.

AlumniNews Hall of Fame Weekend Including Heritage Golf Outing We are excited to finally announce the rescheduled date for the induction of our Hall of Fame inductees. Beginning on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at Spring Ford Country Club, Hall of Fame Weekend will kick off with our 8th Heritage Golf Outing. Sign up your group of golfers for some fun on the links, rekindle some old friendships or make some new ones, compete against members of our PJP golf team or for the non-golfers, stop by after the event to join in the dinner. Then on Saturday morning, October 9, 2021, PJP will officially induct six new members into its Legacy Hall of Fame at a brunch that will take place on the PJP campus. This group of inductees, who have contributed so much to our rich history of Catholic education at our legacy schools and PJP, will forever be enshrined. After the ceremony, our inductees will be honorary guests at our PJP football game against Upper Merion High School and be recognized during the game.

SAINT PIUS X ENDOWMENT FUND The Saint Pius X Endowment Fund was established in 1993 to address the growing need for financial assistance at Saint Pius X High School. Funds for the Endowment were raised over the years by the Saint Pius X Alumni Association primarily through the annual golf outing that was run by David Psota (Class of 1963) and his committee. The purpose of the Fund was to provide financial assistance to students of Saint Pius X related to tuition and school fees. Recipients must have demonstrated financial need and either graduated from a Saint Pius X partner school or belonged to a Saint Pius X partner parish.

Saint Pius X partner schools/parishes are: Saint Aloysius (Pottstown), Blessed Teresa of Calcutta (Limerick), Saint Eleanor (Collegeville), Sacred Heart (Royersford), Saint Philip Neri (Pennsburg), Holy Family (Phoenixville), Saint Basil (Kimberton), Saint Mary (Schwenksville), and Saint Francis Academy (Bally) and their successors.

The Saint Pius X Endowment Fund continues to fulfill its original mission by providing financial assistance to students attending Pope John Paul II High School. Since PJP opened in 2010, $150,000 in financial assistance has been provided to 205 students from the traditional Saint Pius X partner schools to attend Pope John Paul II High School.

Overseen by the Endowment Trustees, donations to the fund will provide deserving students who seek a Catholic education the assistance they need. Contributions can be sent to the: Saint Pius X Endowment Fund, PJPII Advancement Office, 181 Rittenhouse Rd, Royersford, PA 19468.
