EDITOR’S FOREWORD I don’t intend to take up a regular spot at the front of this magazine, but given this is my first issue as editor I felt I should take a little time to introduce myself, provide some insight into my vision for this magazine and explain what sort of changes you can expect to see over the coming months.

I’ve been a member of the club for just over 3 years after buying my Crossflow powered 1995 SE (Narrow) from another club member. I love my little car and despite not really getting enough time to spend properly on (or in) it at the moment, I am determined to get my refresh project finished and have her back on the road to enjoy before the summer is out. You can follow my persistently delayed progress on my thread in the build diaries area of the forum.

When I’m not failing to finish jobs on my car you will often find me somewhere on the Wirral shepherding my 5 year old son around with my wife, or at my office in Liverpool where I am the co-owner and co-director of a marketing and creative agency. Which ultimately is why I’m now writing this introduction having taken over from outgoing editor Peter Osborne.

I would like to thank Peter for his amazing contribution to the club over the past 16 years. His dedication to moving the quality of the publication forwards is the bedrock of why it has become the well-loved magazine it is. I hope I can do it, and him, justice by not only taking good care of it as it was, but also putting my own energy into pushing it forwards so it always remains a valuable part of the club membership offer.

So what does the new chapter for Westfield World look like?

My initial focus is on modernisation and relevancy. The digital age is upon us like never before, and with the exponential rise of things like area-based WhatsApp groups taking over a lot of day-to-day club chatter, I think it is important that the existing mediums - like the magazine and forum move to embrace and support these newer channels and not try to compete against them.

In the second stage I want to focus on the content and features, including looking at ways that the magazine can evolve to better compliment the other digital channels we use in the club. I have some ideas on this but I also want to hear from you all so over the coming weeks I will be posting up some ways that you can have your say in helping shape what the magazine becomes in the future.

If you have an idea for content, I encourage you to take some photos and write it up

Our Chairman mentioned in the recent AGM that one focus for his next year was to form a sub-committee to review the online forum side of things to refresh and realign it and I echo this sentiment with the magazine.

Stage one - which you hopefully have already noticed - is a refresh of the overall look and feel of the magazine. My aim is to nudge it a little closer to the sort of thing you might expect to find in the retail motoring press. We aren’t quite there yet, but I feel it’s a good start. Let me know what you think.

I’d like to finish by thanking everyone who has ever contributed content to the magazine. It literally wouldn’t be possible to put together without the generous submissions we receive from our AOs and members.

How about the return of clamshells?

Some members from my local area are changing their cycle wings to clamshells, going for that period look. We even have a member with FW bodywork and clamshells. The rumour that they are fitting them to reduce speed and increase downforce is entirely unfounded. It might work in F1, but not for a car with the fluid properties of a house brick. In case you haven't noticed the A in Westfield stands for aerodynamics. And is chrome making a comeback? Recently I had a quote to chrome plate my roll hoop, £650 plus VAT. Wow. Gold plating might be more affordable, but maybe not that acceptable.

The Westfield Sports Car Club is doing exceptionally well. New members are joining all the time and are always made to feel welcome in our community. The Boardroom, the font of all knowledge, is well supported. Our Club forums are the place, whether you offer advice, need advice, buying or selling cars or parts, or taking part in Sunday runs or Speed Series events, there is no better community than ours. Our Area Organisers must take a lot of credit for this, without them the Club would be just another nondescript social media page. Our AO's are moving with the times, with local area WhatsApp groups, these are great for letting you know of meets and runs, even at short notice. And there's always lots of banter, to cheer you up when it's raining and you've missed the Sunday run. Contact your AO if you want to be added to your local WhatsApp group.

This is your Club, make the most of it.

The Westfield Sports Car Club is doing exceptionally well

The spring edition of Westfield World was well supported. One of our biggest editions, in terms of page count and content, that we've seen for a long time.

Considering the circumstances, that is to be applauded, so many are willing to contribute to our magazine. Keep those articles coming, because they are entertaining and always interesting and educational reading. It makes you question how many Westies are sitting in the garage with tax and mot, waiting for that sunny Sunday run, how many are not quite finished with the winter upgrades, and how many won't see the light of day for some time to come? So many stories.

I've just said that the boardroom is the font of all knowledge. Here's a caveat. If you ask a question about braking, cooling, ignition, fuel etc, and the reply comes back "I have no experience but...." or "I have read about this...." or "Betty on Facebook

says....", then beware. These replies might be well intentioned, but when we are talking about critical safety aspects of our cars the advice needs to be correct and reliable. Take advice from members who have the knowledge and experience you need. We also have many sponsors and advertisers who, as soon as you mention you are a Club member, are more than willing to answer your questions and give good, safe advice. If you need help, give them a call. Just don't mention Betty.

My winter upgrades went well. New Bosch injectors - to replace the ancient Lucas disc type - and a Tornado Systems chip have certainly been worthwhile, my V8 is pulling like a train, as they say. New clutch slave cylinder too, all the way from Taiwan. The car is a tourer, with windscreen, comfy seats and carpets, but no heater. The brake pads all round have been replaced with standard spec road pads, M16 front, Sierra rear, solid discs, and the car stops on a sixpence.

For those of a certain age a sixpence is a pre decimal coin, and its nearest financial equivalent is a 2P coin. Decimalisation didn't quite work out as expected. You buy fuel by the litre, then calculate your miles per gallon. My speedo says MPH, sometimes too many. My tyre pressures are still 18psi. My pcd is 4 x 108, with 7" rims and an et of 35. Tyres are 205/60/15.

And my torque wrench is calibrated in both ft/lbs and n/ms. Now that could have a very disappointing ending. Anyone seen that 1/2" AF socket? It's next to the 10mm socket that has a 3/8" drive.

While Walton scribbled, Peter Osborne and Mike Black photographed the unfolding high octane action. Presumed lost, the 300+ black and white negatives they captured were recently rediscovered lurking in a dusty garage.

Osborne has restored many of these historic images and they form the basis of this book, along with samples of

Walton's contemporary Motoring News reports. Walton has also written 7000 words to accompany the 123 original photographs that bring to life the beginnings of this exciting, if somewhat mucky, branch of motorsport.

As my articles usually cover the Speed Series it has clearly become difficult to keep up with what people have or have not been doing with their cars over the horrendous period since the start of 2020. Many people, like myself, had cars all sorted and ready to start the 2020 season but our Speed Series had to be cancelled and certainly my car never saw the light of day and stayed in the garage under a cover looking very sad for itself.

It is fair to say that the track day enthusiasts have been far more active than most and seem to have got a good group together at several venues including Knockhill, Croft and Cadwell Park. I feel a bit jealous really as I am not sure I will be able to remember how to pedal quickly in the speed series and that would not go down well with me!

Simon has been steadily improving his ex Mark Anson blade car and has a different steering wheel position and paddle shift as well as some other special mods.

As he has been on track a lot it will be interesting to see how he performs in a bike engine car on slicks in Class W3.

This year has seen a great number of entries to the speed series (the best for several years) with quite a few newcomers and novices joining in the competition at the 32 events in our calendar. At the start of the season events were filling up at an incredibly quick pace. The few drivers who like to visit Wiscombe were not successful and no Westfield Speed Series drivers entered.

Matt Turner has had bad news as he installed a bored out R1 into his car in the search for more performance but it seems that it had problems on the rolling road and the engine damage has caused major problems. On top of his recent repairs to his campervan engine this was not good news but we hope he is back in action soon as we need him in W3.

In the build up to this season some people have been testing at Blyton and these include Simon Waterfall, Mark Anson, John Loudon and Pete Goulding. John has

out later in the year with the very quick supercharged honda engine car.

As I write this several Speed Series guys are getting ready to compete at the Longton and District weekend sprint on 15th and 16th May 2021 so it will be interesting to see how the lockdown has affected us but it will be good to be out there on the track against the clock.

We are getting closer to our own WSCC Blyton weekend in July when we have a Friday track day and weekend sprint at Blyton. The threat of Covid arrangements and changes in procedures including scrutineering, signing on and briefing etc need resolving. Ron Siddle is our event organiser and I am working closely with him to put things in place to ensure we have a great weekend. If you wish to enter or are able to marshal, including on the start line, please contact us as soon as you can.

Some recent news is that John Phelps has injured his hand and skin, whilst he was push starting his car, so we hope he recovers quickly and gets out double driving the “family” busa engined car.

INTRODUCING

TRIPLE M MOTORSPORT An interview with Alan Mugglestone, one of the ‘M’s behind the name of Triple M Motorsport along with his son Nick and wife Angela.

Triple M are based near Gainsborough, Lincolnshire and almost within earshot of one WSCC club members favourite venues... Blyton Park Driving Centre.

Alan’s story is one full of success and admirable achievements which have made him and the team a highly accomplished and recognised force within the motorsport world.

I had seen Alan and his son Nick around sprint and hill climb paddocks for a number of years, not really knowing anything about them. The large blue 7.5 ton race transporter truck should really have given me a clue as to what they did beforehand though.

In 2015 lady luck had the modest Yorkshire man and his son placed next to me in the paddock at Llys Y Fran hill climb (South Wales) when they were competing in their MX5 sprint car and conversation ensued. Over the next few years I heard that some of the British sprint competitors were using Alan for advice and setup work with good results. When I later acquired my own single seater I asked for Alan’s help to turn it into something more fit for purpose which he did admirably, enabling me to finish 12th in the British Sprint championship in my first year.

Grab a cup of tea (plus maybe a dustpan to pick your chin up off the floor) and brace yourself for an amazing story littered with success and how they came to be where they are today in the motorsport world.

Hello Alan, thank you for taking time out to talk to us and sponsoring the Westfield Sports Car Club. We value your support.

What is your background and how did you become involved in motorsport?

My father built and raced motorbike sidecars and I grew up helping him from an early age. I competed myself at trials, motor cross, side cars and karting and won the British GP at Silverstone driving a 250cc National kart in my rookie year of 1982, going on to have a successful crack at car circuit racing until time and money forced me to stop. I now compete in sprints and hill climbs whenever time permits, double driving our MX5 or Raw Fulcrum with my son Nick.

What did you do before Triple M existed?

I did an engineering apprenticeship at British Rail when I first left school, but through helping my dad with racing sidecars beforehand and competing myself in my spare time from an early age, I pretty soon started earning a living as a full-time race engineer and progressing through the ranks and disciplines.

In recent years we have been running British GT cars and Ginetta G55’s for customers and engineering the new Ginetta LMP1 car in 2019. If you have ever caught the motorsport on ITV4 early on Sunday mornings in 2020 you may well have seen Ginetta supercup cars racing, some of which are run by Triple M in the hands of Tom Hibbert and Stewart Lines.

I am one of possibly five people in the world that truly understand the science

How did Triple M come into existence and when?

After racing a Formula Ford myself, I started my career looking after Formula Fords and F2000 cars for other people. I then progressed onto looking after cars for various customers and various types of race cars in professional motorsport right up to and including F1 with Beatrice Lola Haas and Brabham. I was given a chance to build and manage a team from the owner of Fortec Motorsport to run his cars. Then later a South African agent of a car manufacturer in the UK asked me to set up a team which morphed into my own F3 team named TMR (Team Magic Racing). I sold it a few years later to an investor and then stepped back to be a freelance motorsport engineer which led to the birth of Triple M Motorsport with my wife Angela and my son Nick, (the other two Ms behind the name).

I have been involved in pretty much every

form of motorsport ranging from BTCC, NASCAR, F3, F1, Le Mans, British GT and so on along the way, winning 52 British, European and World championships.

These include two class wins at Le Mans in the LMP2 and GT2 classes with a Zytek LMP2 and Team LNT in a Panoz Esperante in 2006 for (Ginetta owner) Lawrence Tomlinson. I went on to design the Ginetta G50 as my first clean sheet of paper design and this car has carried the Ginetta flagship around the world.

Who was your inspiration?

I didn’t really have a car racing hero in the early years but grew up in the Ron Haslam and Barrie Sheen era and followed bikes.

This eventually morphed into cars.

I have since worked with the likes of Eddie Cheever, Steffan Johanson, Nigel Mansell and Martin Brundle as they have made comebacks in GT or sports prototypes after F1. Both Martin and his son Alex are proper people who really care about the sport.

What are Triple M’s specialities?

Making things faster than anybody else via race car engineering. Our USP is that we have so much breadth in experience over years in bikes, karts, and cars - along with having the privilege to work with some of the best drivers in the world - we have gained an understanding of what is going on with the behaviour of the cars and enhancing them to their maximum.

One speciality of ours is damper building and dynoing. I am one of possibly five people in the world that truly understand the science and “feel” of dampers and can put it into practice when building them for

specific purposes. We now have our own shock dyno in our workshop, but I also work alongside Ohlins and Mick Gardner Racing to build their impressive range of Ohlins dampers.

We also coach race drivers and have worked with some famous names and rising stars from a young age, Lando Norris being one of the many of late.

What products do you sell and support?

We supply Ohlins and Nitron dampers along with Pirelli race tyres who I helped develop a sprint and hill climb tyre to rival the previous monopoly of Avon branded tyres. 2019 saw many FTD’s, outright hill and sprint records set, and the outright British Hillclimb championship won all using the Pirelli tyres that we helped develop and supply. We have the skills, equipment and contacts to fabricate, build and supply anything needed to make cars faster.

What is the most impressive project that you have worked on?

There have been quite a few but the new Ginetta LMP1 car was a fantastic piece of kit in 2019. One of the most interesting would have to be the DeltaWing, which I engineered in the American LeMans series for three years.

Do you have a competitive motorsport history?

From a young age I have won in 6 different disciplines of motorsport including trials, motor cross, enduro, karting, car circuit racing and more recently sprints and hill climbs to get my son Nick involved. Both Nick and I have won the Hillclimb and Sprint Association championship twice each. (We have also both won in 10th scale touring cars, Nick taking his first title at 10 years old!)

Nick’s competitive streak also took him to the U16s national basketball title and a scholarship in the States for two years to finish his education whilst playing.

What other activities do you participate in?

I have tried most things including mountain biking, golf, fishing, water sports, paddle boarding. I have lots of toys but unfortunately not much time to play with them.

Another person is an old rival by the name of Brian Mee who became a good friend and encouraged me to progress and take leaps of faith in my own ability along the way to progress to where I am now.

Lawrence Tomlinson who gave me the chance to run his Team LNT Panoz race car to help them win in Le Mans in 2006.

Lawrence has since bought Ginetta cars and then gave me the chance to design a car from scratch which is something I had always wanted to do. This was the Ginetta G50, which later evolved into the G55 with different bodywork. Ginetta now own Blyton Park which, along with my wife

Angela, we also manage for Ginetta Cars having taken over from Richard Usher at the end of 2018.

Angela and Nick have been a huge driving force behind the Triple M success, and they both work just as hard as I do in making our business and life a happy and successful one.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE WESTFIELD SPORTS CAR CLUB

Zoom Conference, 22nd May 2021

Due to the continuing, unique circumstance we’ve faced for the last year, the Club’s AGM was once again carried out on-line, via Zoom.

We didn’t have quite as good an attendance this year, it was disappointing in fact; but I think you have to consider that by the 22nd, with the various easings of lockdown restrictions, many were simply out trying to return to a normal life of some description, and that Club AGMs were simply not that far up the priority list for many members!

It was agreed to start the meeting shortly after 3pm, when we had all available committee members and several Club members present. John Dolan opened the meeting, received apologies for absence and, along with the rest of the committee, expressed condolences to Kevin Pullen whose brother sadly passed away unexpectedly earlier that week.

The only change to last year being Quinten who stepped forward to replace Chris King as web master. Chris has done an amazing job over the past years but stepped down part way through the year as his business workload has increased

too much to give him the spare time to sort us lot out! Quinten, previously coopted to the committee for the balance of last year, has already made a fantastic start and has some good ideas for directions to take us in.

In his Chairman’s segment, once the formalities were out of the way, John shared with us his desire to conduct a full review of the forum’s current state, layout and style; it’s been broadly the way it is now, with some tweaks and new functionality added as it's come along, for quite a few years. John is looking to put a sub-committee of Club members together, with a view to overhauling the framework, to bring it into the 21st century, and to make the forum better for all members, and better for the Club.

This dovetails perfectly into the changes we will see in the magazine over the coming months, as it’s stewardship passes from Peter Oz to Andy Malone.

Andy joined us at the AGM, and introduced himself. The committee has already seen some mock ups of where Andy hopes to take us, and it’s a really exciting time to be a Club member!

With the business of the day being done remarkably promptly (for us!) our Chairman called the meeting to a halt at approx. 3.40pm, and after a quick general chat about perhaps increasing some of the club merchandise offerings, we all said our goodbyes and departed!

25TH ANNIVERSARY OF MY WESTFIELD On Good Friday 1996 our Westfield journey began, which my Dad and I did together. A van delivered the complete kit to us with everything they did not forget. The factory was only 30 minutes away so was handy for picking up the bits that were missed.

This was back in the days before the internet, so our only build references were the manual (ha ha, no mention of the Zetec engine) and the 36 pictures we took on a roll of film of various parts from the assembly line at Kingswinford.

Six weeks later it was finished, to be driven out of the garage for the first time, which is a really special moment.

Then off it went on a recovery truck for someone with a clipboard to check the chassis and engine number, no IVA or SVA in those days.

My wife and I have been on a few tours in the UK and Ireland, plus some camping trips to really enjoy the car on the road.

In the early 2000s I did a number of years in the Speed Series, which was fantastic.

I really recommend it to anyone remotely interested, so much more fun than track days in my opinion.

The car is 25 years old this year. I’ve resisted significant modification so it’s almost as it was except for changing to a side exit exhaust, the RAC roll bar, front anti roll bar, and recovering the dash. That misses out the best upgrade, which was suspension setup and small mod by Procomp.

It’s very much a keeper, mostly because of the fact that Dad and I built it together all those years ago. Annual mileage has

HOW WE SPENT THE COVID19 YEAR(S) AT SP RACING 2ND INSTALMENT

We had another couple of motorcycle jobs towards the end of the year, but nothing of much interest, so let’s get back to the Hayabusa race motor.

After the trial build the top end was stripped again and the valve train measured, which confirmed that the head would need shorter valve guides fitting.

The existing ones were just serviceable, but bearing in mind the investment in the engine so far it made sense to replace them and fit new valves also. The new Silicon Bronze guides are a couple of mm shorter on the seal side allowing clearance between the spring retainer and the valve seal.

We had a call from a new customer who wanted an engine stripped and then rebuilt so that the crankcases and cylinder head could be polished, and this arrived one afternoon on the back seat of his BMW!

It turned out the chap had been one of the ‘White Helmet’ motorcycle display team and intended to have his Triumph T100 customised to resemble his old bikes!

Because the intention was to have the crankcases polished everything had to be removed from them so that they could be acid dipped to remove the paint. A bit concerning really…

Triumph insist on using Torx head screws everywhere and great care needs to be taken to keep the Torx bit perfectly in line with the screw. As the motor had never

been stripped before everything was ultra-tight; three broken bits and a day or so of cursing and it was finally apart. They even use them for the crankshaft bearing bolts. The crankcases and head are now away being dipped/polished. The owner has replacement side covers too which were sourced in the USA. It seems they love their British bikes more than we do, most aftermarket parts tend to come from there too.

Well, last week, I decided it was worthwhile having it re-built as the sump pan was fine and all of the existing pipework and fittings suited the Pace pump. I sent it off to Neil Brown Engineering, who now own Pace. It arrived back a week later and what a transformation! Unfortunately it needed new bodies and new rotors, so in essence it’s nearly all new and cost a fair bit, but I still think it was the right decision in the end.

Cases stripped ready to go to the acid dipper/polisher. Let’s hope the internal areas don’t suffer!

So, back to the cylinder head – as the valve guides have been replaced it is essential that the seats are re-cut to ensure a good seal and no stress on the valves due to a misaligned seat. This can bend the valve stems as the spring pressure closes them causing the guides to wear like an“egg timer”.

So it’s back to the ‘busa whilst I’m waiting for the Triumph parts to come back from the polisher.

The old guides were removed and the Bronze ones fitted. They were reamed and honed to suit the new Kibblewhite valves and then the whole cylinder head was cleaned up ready to cut the valve seats Some time ago I had noticed that the Pace scavenge pump for the sump was very notchy when turned, so I decided to strip it to inspect and I’m glad that I did. I knew that the engine that came with the car had suffered a shattered clutch basket (separate topic later) and had been re-built, but I was led to believe that the pump had been changed.

If so it must have been before the clutch incident! The rotors were in terrible condition due to passing debris and so I put it to one side for the time being while I decided if a complete new dry sump system would make better sense.

60lb Kibblewhite valves, springs and retainers were fitted to hopefully manage the increased ramp and lift of the new cams. The new valve springs are compared to the OEM valves in the right hand picture below – the Kibblewhite ones are on the left, a thicker wire with fewer coils.

To facilitate the extra power and torque a new billet clutch basket and centre were fitted, after first priming the lubrication system utilising the feed pipe that attaches to the oil tank (the pump is behind the clutch, so it has to be done in this order). The green thing is a twin channel Hall Effect gear position sensor; one feed goes to the MoTeC ECU, the other to the gear position indicator on the car’s dashboard.

Just a few ancilliaries left to be fitted and it can go back in the car.

So, I decided to dive into the Triumph engine and get the cleaning up over and done with… This was like the rise of a phoenix from the ashes – after much cleaning the engine was assembled together with the new parts from the USA. Let me know what you think.

Time to fit and shim the camshafts – the effect of the new valves was to increase the clearance by 0.3mm, this would also have an effect on the valve to piston clearances, so this was re-checked before the cylinder head was finally fitted and the cams timed in.

The cam timings are finally chosen to provide good mid to high end efficiency, ultimately we’ll have to wait and see!

The Triumph T100 engine cases return from the polishers – they look stunning, but what a mess they have made doing it. It’s going to take a long time to get them clean enough for reassembly, so I’m going to put them to one side for now. The customer is off to Bahrain to install the sound systems for the formula one testing taking place there, so he’s away for a couple of weeks. Nice work if you can get it!

Finally, the ‘busa motor gets a new set of clutch plates and makes its way to the car, there is plenty more work to do to install and plumb it in properly!

So, time for the final assembly of the Hayabusa motor; dry sump, scavenge pump and the clutch slave cylinder were fitted first, on inspection the bore of the slave cylinder looked a little suspect, so it was replaced.

WIRRAL & NORTH WALES RUN

MONDAY TH 12 APRIL Denbigh Moor

It took a long time but it finally happened, a group of us managed to get out in our Westfield’s for a run out.

Monday the 12th April saw new restrictions come into force where up to six people could meet up (keeping 2m apart) but the best news was, Wales had opened up its border and was allowing people back in. Six of us had arranged to meet at the Tudor Rose for what should have been the first of Nick’s (our new joint AO) organised runs out, but with car problems he was unable to take part.

I met up with Mike C, Farmer John, Dave Y and Dave S - whose car had a small water leak when he arrived at the Tudor Rose. On closer inspection Dave decided it would be easier for him to nip back to his garage to sort the leak out, then hopefully meet up with us at Llyn Brenig for breakfast.

Mike led the way to Mold then onto some good B roads toward Denbigh before turning onto the B4501 to the cafe at Llyn Brenig. In the past we have always been able to get a really good breakfast at the lake side cafe but at the time the only hot food they had was baked spuds with either beans or cheese, served in a cardboard box with a wooden knife and fork, not very appetising. At least the tea stayed hot in its paper cup as we stood outside in the cold wind.

Mike and John headed back for home while Dave Y and I waited for Dave S to catch up before we continued our run.

Once Dave was back with us, he checked the hose again and said everything was ok for us to carry on. We decided to go over Denbigh Moor where we stopped to take in the views of Snowdon and the surrounding mountains covered in snow, we then continued back down the A5 to Cerrigydrudion before picking up the B5105 up through Clocaenog Forest to Ruthin. At this point Dave Y headed for home while Dave S and I headed over Moel Famau back toward the Wirral.

LDMC BLYTON SPRINT SPRINT WEEKEND WEEKEND

15th & 16th MAY 2021

15th & 16th MAY 2021 After many competitors had spent 18 to 20 months waiting, 11 Speed Series drivers took part in a great weekend of sprinting organised and efficiently run by our friends at Longton and District Motor Club.

Amazingly whilst most of the country was suffering from heavy rain and thunder and lightning we were not affected. The rain passed overnight and only started when we had finished on Sunday and were on our way home.

A recent issue with the starter solenoid (I think) caused Adam and Charlotte Phelps to withdraw plus Dave Cleaver was a no show.

It was good to see old friends again and some were sporting new helmets, overalls, gloves and boots. My Richard Houlgate on the gas brother Steve’s boots were particularly striking with a fluorescent green logo etc.

Since we last sprinted here there had been some track improvements with tyre walls on the inside approaches to The Wiggler and Bishops. In addition there was new tarmac which makes the exits from these corners much quicker so long as you are brave enough to use all

Friday night saw the usual convoy of drivers walking the track and debating how wet the track would get as the forecast was abysmal but fortunately all the predictions were wrong which was particularly good news for the guys on slicks.

SATURDAY

EASTERN CIRCUIT

Saturday started cold and damp as we got ready to tackle the quite technical Eastern circuit. Due to Covid, all signing on and briefing had been done online and there were only a few cars that needed scrutineering due to changes etc. The first shock I had was when I saw the immaculate looking car of Andy Hargreaves driving past to the start line in a new two tone grey bodywork.

P1 did not go without a few dramas including Steve hitting a cone and removing his offside rear wing on his blade car. It was eventually recovered by the marshals and brought back to him in 7 pieces that looked a bit like a jigsaw.

Luckily the plastic bolts holding it to the tub and sheared off leaving almost no damage to the mountings. We used some thin alloy sheeting strips for reinforcement and this was expertly riveted in place by Mick Skidmore with Ron Siddle showing his artistic skills as he covered the wing with black duct tape. Even Chris Mansley (scrutineer) called it a work of art and better than new.

This was a fantastic return to the track On his next run the neutral indicator light was not working so we set about looking for the fault and forgot the electric water pump was still on which flattened his new Powerlite lithium battery. So out came that battery and it was replaced with my spare and then the car would not start.

The time to the first timed run was too short to diagnose the fault so I offered him a double drive of my car which he accepted. At lunchtime we found the problem was the earth wire from the Power Commander direct to the battery had been connected to the positive whoops. We changed that round and all was good including the neutral light that required a loose connector fixing.

Today Simon Waterfall joined in the W3 action and was keen to see how his recent mods and trackday action would help his times even though he was on an old set of slicks. In the end he had a good day and beat quite a few good cars and drivers in our class on the day. He just needs new tyres now. I suffered most of the day with a suspect misfire and lack of top end power which was cured by changing the cam sensor plus a set of plugs on my CBR1000RR blade.

Today we got one practice and five timed runs as fewer drivers threw themselves off the track and the mechanical failures of yesterday were much reduced. Steve Everall was having problems with his paddle shift which was due to a loose fixing bolt in the mechanical shift mechanism. On his last run Mick Skidmore was trying hard to put in a good time on his last run but pushed too hard and spun at the first lefthander.

shoot for the Speed Series Drivers who lined up near the start line. On the last run and with full power restored I managed to put in a good run and beat Peter O’ Connor.

So the fastest Westfield all weekend was John Hoyle and Pete Goulding led the way in the single seaters. This was a fantastic return to the track and I am certainly looking forward to the next event.

Also in class W4 was Mick Dent who was determined to get closer to John Hoyle’s time but during his T3 run, on the approach to the fast lefthander at Bishops, he braked hard but the front end lockup caused him to hit the tyres on the left. This did a lot of damage including smashed bonnet, steering arm bolts broken and torn out of the left hand upright, cycle wing bracket damage, steering arm bent and oil cooler/radiator brackets bent back. He was lucky that the damage did not seem to have caused any distortion to the chassis rails near the wishbone mountings or indeed the wishbones themselves.

TIME TO CHANGE

MY GEARBOX? Firstly, some background info. I bought my SEIW back in 2015 from the second owner. The car was originally built in 1993 and only had 5k miles on the clock when I picked it up. Rumour has it that the 2ltr Fuel injected Pinto and gearbox came from a Cortina once owned by the Police.

As with most things of a 70's vintage, myself included, the gearbox has always carried a few aches, pains and leaks.

When cold it's almost impossible to select 1st gear. 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd are just as bad. The standard box also suffers from the well discussed short 1st gear. Combined with the selection issues I usually just give up and pull away in 2nd.

In recent years I have not had the time to fit in the change due to caring for my wife.

I'm sure it's not needed!

However last year after a long courageous fight Esther sadly passed away. I now find myself with the time and the enthusiasm to do something about it.

The decision to make a start came out of the blue. While flicking through the “Parts for Sale” section on the forum, a box appeared. It was a new build (never run) Type 9 with a Quaife Clubman straight cut gear kit. The price was right and the seller only lived 3 miles away, a couple of DM's later and it was in the back of the car. I know “Straight Cut” sends shivers down some owner’s spines with tales of bleeding ears and funny looks. But maybe it’s just an itch I need to scratch and on the plus side they hold their money really well if I ever need to move it on.

Previously when doing upgrades, it’s been on an ad-hoc basis. I would start a job and order parts as I went along. This time I would try to project manage the job a bit, setting up a spreadsheet listing all the parts I could think of. Columns for ordered, arrived, checked and of course the scary one, cost. An order was put in to Burton Power. My initial parts list was limited to the gearbox change, clutch kit, oil and

so on. However, I remembered what Ant Anstead (Wheeler Dealers) had said about a project. “If you get to the point of taking the engine out, do everything you can get to”. So, after squeezing the piggy bank really hard, I ordered more parts. Rear oil seal, pilot bearing, lightened steel flywheel and an alloy Quaife top cover. The last one is not essential but I couldn't resist.

I planned in the work for over the Easter bank holiday. As I would be working on my own, an engine crane was essential, and as expected I had 2 offers from club members. One A-Frame with block and tackle, and a hydraulic one with load leveller. I opted for the latter (sorry Graham and thanks Simon). So bright and early on Good Friday, work began. The initial strip down went without a hitch.

The Pinto is a simple beast, and once the pipe work, electrics and exhaust manifold were taken care of, the engine was pretty much ready to come out.

I decided, as I was working on my own, to split the box and take the engine out first. With the engine safely on the floor, the bell housing was next to come off, both to make some room and reduce the weight of the box. The gearbox mount bolts were a bit awkward to get at, being very close to the side of the mount. Not ideal when you’re trying to be both under the car and holding a spanner on top at the same time.

By 1 o'clock, both engine and box were on the garage floor and the rebuild could start. This is where things started to go sideways a bit. The gearbox mount I had in the parts box looked nothing like the one that came off the car, it turns out I had bought a Sierra mount! A quick photo onto the area WhatsApp group and within minutes, replies came back complete with 2 choices and links with where to purchase one, this club really is the best!

So that scuppered the box going back in despite what I thought was a well-planned upgrade. The day was not completely wasted as I fitted a new rear oil seal, pilot bearing and flywheel. While on the

subject, the original flywheel had radial cracks all the way around it, so it was a good decision to change. When fitting the clutch, I noticed there were no locating dowels on the new flywheel, so that job ground to a halt as well. A frustrating end to the first day, with more parts on order.

What have I learnt?

Working alone is hard and dangerous.

Everything takes twice as long and can be very frustrating.

Despite planning the swap there were still bits missing that held the job up by weeks, waiting for parts to come. Budget wise I was on track until I decided to do the extra jobs, but don't skimp. If you do them while the engine is out it’s only the cost of the parts. You'll be upset if a rear oil seal goes in a month's time. Oh, and you WILL spend more than you think, I did. I’d budgeted £1500 to swap the box, but came in at £1750. As for the driving experience, it’s a joy to drive and the long first gear is a revelation! It snicks into gear beautifully and isn't too noisy, but this might change as the gear set runs in. Only one problem, it’s not running right. Click, Click, Click… I’ve just ordered a full Omex ignition and throttle body setup. What did I say about the budget?!

A week later, and now on first name terms with the APC driver, work restarted. As with the removal, the gear box was to go back in first. Simon had also lent me a scissor type gearbox lift which was perfect for lone working. The only issue was the Cortina rear gearbox mount. There is a raised rim around the edge that runs really close to the nuts. After an hour of trying to bolt it in from underneath I gave up and the hole saw came out. A hole in either side of the tunnel future proofed that job, with blanking grommets to finish it off.

The engine went back in first time, and the decision to dry fit the box paid off with no clutch alignment issues. The rebuild went without a hitch with nothing to report there.

AROUND THE WORLD NEWS FROM THE WESTFIELD SPORTS CAR CLUB AREAS

Map-marker DERBY & NOTTS Well…. We have a new editor, Andy Malone, and I’m sure we all wish him well in his endeavours over the coming months, hopefully years. Of course, he can’t do much without something to format so lets all get stuck in and give him plenty of copy to look at.

The pandemic continues to disrupt our daily lives but on May 17th restrictions were lifted a little bit and we will be able to hold the June club meeting at the Clock… indoors. There will be the 6 at a table layout we had last year. Not a problem in the room we have at the Clock. Also, in our everyday life we can go to the pub and even have a meal if we want, there are restrictions though, table service and booking etc. All we need is for the various Covid variations to get under control.

As we head for 40 million plus people

who have had covid jabs, it should give us some hope of a further easing off of restrictions. Longton and District Motor Club put on the first sprint of the year at Blyton, no spectators though and restrictions on team members. By all accounts it went well with several WSCC championship members taking part.

However, Longton have just cancelled the May Sprint on Anglesey due to the Welsh restriction of 50 at these types of events, I would think that the Pembrey round will also fall foul of the Welsh Covid rules.

Check before you make plans for the season. I am not sure what will happen with the various shows at the NEC, Stoneleigh and Silverstone, time will tell.

As usual I have been asking area members to contribute to the stuff I write for the magazine and due to work/ family commitments, Tim Cole is unable to submit the follow up article to the excellent piece he wrote for the last

magazine, hopefully next time. Tony Smiley has done his second instalment and should be of interest to you bike engine boys, this will be outside the this area stuff as was in the Spring edition.

The ever-helpful Ian Podmore has put together a really good piece for his car's 25th anniversary. Ian did tell me that his Dad used to borrow the car to commute to work and back.

I hope you find these articles interesting and would encourage more of you to have a go at writing about your own car and the work you have undertaken or have planned, or just what you do with the car and the enjoyment you get out of it.

I don’t know how many of you watch Indy car racing but Romain Grosjean almost won the Indianapolis GP last week, but second place was impressive after putting it on pole. Shame he is not doing the Indy 500. He certainly has some support, in no small part due to his spectacular escape from the horrific fireball in the Bahrain GP at the end of last season. I don’t think there will be many people who now object to the ‘halo’ device, it certainly saved his life. I do think that it is far superior to the Indy solution of the Fighter plane cockpit canopy. I don’t think it will be something I will get used to like the halo.

We have had two Zoom area meetings.

The first went down really well with about 15 or so members and Zoom even gave us a free extension to the 40-minute cut off rule. Not sure what happened with the second one, only 4 bothered to take part, maybe the first one was a lot worse than I thought? Regardless of Covid restrictions there will be no more, not organised by me at any rate.

I succumbed to a 2007 SEiW running an 1800 Zetec on injection. I think it’s a real credit to the builder and obviously in the best colour too!

Ownership quickly led to the usual crop of questions and queries ranging from how to navigate an MOT, where to insure, where do I jack, what colour is the wire…. etc! The WSSC has been hugely valuable with some great, knowledgeable people willing to answer all my daft questions and provide advice.

I volunteered to pick-up the Devon & Somerset AO role a little while ago whilst still in the midst of Covid-19 restrictions.

The area had not had an AO for a little while but there seemed to be quite a few owners locally – albeit Devon and Somerset is a pretty big area!

In retrospect, volunteering during Covid was probably not the best idea I’ve ever had, but I thought that it was worth trying to get some interest going. Although still hampered by Covid to some extent, we have a WhatsApp group established and have even had a first low-key meet!

Some great cars and even better to meet some of the folks that have helped me out over the past few months!

I had a run out to the Haynes Breakfast Club hosted at the Haynes Museum in early May. The museum is due to open again from mid-May and well worth a visit if you have not been. It was good to meet a couple of other WSSC members there too. If nothing else a good excuse to have an early Sunday squirt up the A303!

I will plan to schedule in some drive outs over the coming months and will try to switch these up a bit to try to cover the area as best we can to give everyone the opportunity to join for all or part etc... I’ll post any ideas and plans in the forum.

I’d be really happy to take any suggestions on events, drives, meets, etc... that might get your juices going and of course open to offers of help to organise a few things too! I look forward to meeting more of you over the coming months and many more miles!

Map-marker DORSET Well, that three months went quickly! So, with a feeling of deja vous, time to try and dream up an area report covering a distinctly quiet Westfield period given the ongoing coronavirus restrictions.

However there does appear to be light at the end of the tunnel, and we are hoping to hold a much awaited get together for a pint and a natter in the very near future. The landlord of our regular haunt (The Crown Inn Bridport) contacted me to let me know they were planning to open again on May 17th in line with government guidance. Following a quick canvass around local members we are planning a get together on Thursday 20th to reintroduce ourselves to each other and the landlord and staff. Following this we are aiming to start our regular monthly get togethers on the first Thursday of the Month.

The Breakfast Club meetings at Haynes Motor Museum have started again, with the stipulation you have to book in advance and pay £5 for the privilege. To date a few of us have booked for the June and July events. Pre coronavirus events were very popular, and the organisers were looking to run them over two weekends, with a pre and post 1980 vehicle split. I understand that following a survey they have decided not to pursue such a split. Personally, I am pleased to hear this as I found it fascinating to see vehicles from all eras in one place and be able to talk to their enthusiastic owners.

Happy to report that Colin and I have successfully entered the MCC John Aley Trial, planned for June 26th. Initial information indicates that our road going Class R will run in daylight, starting in Chard at 5.00am and finishing near St Agnes late that afternoon. Hoping for a shorts and tee shirt day rather than the winter woollies attire required on our previous foray on the Exeter Trial!

Having been absent from the South West track day scene for a number of years it appears that some events are being run again at Keevil Airfield near Trowbridge.

To this end we have five Westfields and six drivers booked for a track day in July.

Good to have something to look forward to, I just hope the dreaded coronavirus does not rear its ugly head again.

In terms of cars, the majority are effectively raring to go, it will be interesting to see what mysterious upgrades appear over the coming weeks!

Colin has been busy changing the kingpins on “Dotty”, his venerable Austin 10, ready for a get together at Cirencester in the summer.

The front brakes on my 250 can be noisy at slow speed when braking gently at junctions and the like, to the point where my “financial controller” was getting less inclined to go out for a run even around rural somerset. I tried various recommended remedies such as selfadhesive shim, copper slip, CeraTex grease, and chamfering leading edge of friction material, all to no avail.

By chance I spotted an AP Brake kit (calipers, discs, pads, and flexible hoses) for sale on the forum which I purchased.

Following a trip to the “wild north” (well north of Bristol anyway!) to collect them, I spent some time in the garage swapping the assemblies over. I’ve only had the chance for a 60 mile run so far after bedding them in, but so far so good, the feel and stopping ability is fine and to date they are quiet!

Our volunteering at the local Covid vaccination centre continues, anywhere between one to three days per week. Still enjoying the experience even on wet and windy days. Currently doing mainly second doses with the aim of winding down this centre June/July time we have been told.

Hope to be in a position to provide a more interesting report for the next edition, in the meantime stay safe.

Summer is coming and restrictions are being lifted! Although no monthly meets or blats have taken place, track days have been organised. With COVID restrictions in place. Sadly, no spectators or passenger rides at these events. This didn’t stop some of the Essex & Kent boys from getting out and thrashing the life out of their cars.

We kicked off back in March when the tracks opened up again, Snetterton was the track of choice for Paul Demetriou in his XTR pushing his skills as far as he could which was then followed by one of his famous BBQs in his trailer.

Next was Brands Hatch in April where Paul Demetriou, Bernie Holdgate, and Stuart Walter took to the Indy track, with Jim Hughes on the spanners for the day.

Stuart Walter put in some impressive lap times in his 1400cc “Busa” BEC, and was pushing the limits and ended up having a “squeaky bum” moment coming out of Paddock Hill bend!

Back to Snetterton in May for Tim Essex, Stuart Walter, Dean Savill, Paul Demetriou and his lovely misses Helen, Kevan Purton, Bernie Holdgate and Rob Cooper helping with set ups. Everybody enjoys the Snetterton 300 circuit with its long straights and fast corners and hairpins.

This track day also gave Tim Essex a chance to use his new 360 Gopro. After a bit of editing it gave fantastic views of the day's track action.

Now with COVID restrictions being eased our first monthly meet will be on Sunday 13th June, Hanningfield reservoir, CM38HX @10:00am.

Finally, we would also like to thank Dave Woodall at open track for his kind donation to one of our members who is currently undergoing Cancer treatment.

Hopefully, the rest of the year becomes more normal...

Well here we go again, my third report under lockdown and hopefully my last!

Under lockdown that is not report.

THINKING OF SELLING YOUR WESTFIELD - DON’T! Well it’s not necessarily a ‘don’t’ BUT it’s definitely a think twice/thrice, cogitate/contemplate!

Not too much to report from our area due to lockdown but we have managed a few runs over the Trough to Settle, two early morning breakfast runs and an evening fish and chip run.

A cautionary tale from Bernie Darwin, during his recent MOT test the water pump decided to spread its contents over the examiners feet. Luckily due to his 2lt Zetec being zero emissions he was able to carry on the test with the engine off. So with the test passed, he set off home with the tank topped up and a 5lt container of water just in case.

New pump fitted the next day, and puzzled why the old one should fail after so few miles, Bernie realised it was possibly due to the antifreeze being past its best and temperature the night before was down to -4.

The reason for saying this is that in a period of lockdown blues I advertised mine. The thinking was I’d step straight into another. But plans never go to plan!

Anyway – advertised it was and immediately (and I mean seconds rather than days!) I had two contacts. One was a local member asking to view which I agreed to, and the next was offering the full asking price as it stood, without MOT, with him sending a transporter down to collect as soon as it could be arranged.

Hmmmm… too cheap perhaps! Tempting as it was to go for the quick bucks I opted to honour my first contact.

Anyway, Alex and his Dad turned up and following intense perusal, questioning and a ‘charge’ around the estate the deal was done and deposit paid – pending me MOT’ing before completion.

At this point I admit to realising how much prices were rising, and I did contemplate withdrawing my Westfield from the market for a more considered ‘plan’. But I am a big believer in honour amongst members.

due to covid so I managed to find one through a local garage. Driving to and from the MOT in the sun did hit me hard and I did start regretting my decisions.

And somehow I managed to resist the big temptation to go for one last blatt around the country lanes.

So off it went to its new home several weeks ago. And I have to say that from seeing its new accommodation it’s gone up in the world! The ‘Onliest (Lardy) One’s’ (I’m sure they will re-nickname) new owners appear to be great people and from communications since then I’m sure it will be well cared for and it will only be Angle-Double-Right

Lesson learned and a note to self, check your coolant more often than every 10 years.

Engine upgrade time for Alistair Ruttle to a forged Duratec build since the ring went on his previous one. He drove to Essex at 5.30 am had the engine and gearbox in and home by 5.30pm The new engine has a light map and is limited to 4.5k. Full rolling road booked for next month for final dyno, can’t wait to see the results Alistair.

Sad news to end with, Darren Bedworth lost his battle to cancer last month Darren was a Lancashire member for over 10 years. During that time he rebuilt 2 Westfields and always supported our social events and run outs. He will be very sadly missed by all that knew him.

derive as much pleasure from driving W500 over the coming years Alex as I have throughout my ownership, you will have had the bargain of the century.

In hindsight I should have kept my Westfield until a replacement had been found. Mine was always going to be an easy sell, with its high spec and high profile within WSCC with WW well documenting its history over my 10 years of partnership.

So…. sitting here in my reverie, sinking deep into misery…

NO – there will be further life in Westieworld. Despite finding the market ‘too expensive’ I will find something that catches my interest sometime down the line. I will just have to be patient, even if it may result in many missed sunny days blatting.

Where to now? – logical likelihood after owning the perfect ‘all-rounder’ (tour/road/track/sprint) would be going more track/sprint or more road/tourer, any more than that would be giving the game away.

There have been a few zoom meetings and I joined the last one post Westie sale. Needless to say there was a ton of quizzing on my future Westfielding.

Although I am not particularly feeling AOish, I am sure it’s likely just a temporary fault/electrical glitch and following a hiatus I‘ll likely get back with the program, especially if my garage becomes occupied by another doted on ‘pride and joy’.

Perhaps a temporary or joint AO’ship would work if no-one wishes to take on full ownership.

In the meantime (all being well) I will attempt to organise a full meet for June/ July. Keep an eye on the local events section of the forum for details.

Whatever the future brings, PLEASE head along to a meet when it happens, ALL will be welcome.

Last issue I admitted that my impetuous motivation had waned recently. Selling up certainly hasn’t helped, so if there is anyone willing to take on the role of Manc WSCC AO, please step forward and get in touch.

It scared passengers on track and road, and made them smile/laugh. Brought pleasure to many. Everytime I passed the local primary school it drew cheers and waves. It toured Scotland, attracting more tourists than local monuments. It surprised others on track days, and gained awards sprinting in the Speed Series. But mostly it’s been a great de-stresser/chill out blatter, always bringing a smile to my face.

Local area WSCC membership was surveyed pre-Covid and the consensus at that time was to look for new meet accommodation North of Manchester. We had a meet at Owd Betts on the Edenfield/ Rochdale road which had gone very well, with the highest number of members attending for a long while. The plan was to try a few venues in the area before settling on a permanent location.

Map-marker NORFOLK Hello. I appreciate getting the Norfolk area communicating effectively will be a challenge. I have sent an introductory Email to all the Norfolk WSCC members and received a few replies. If you think you would like to get involved then please email me your details.

I am planning for regular monthly meetings to commence in early July, so if members can recommend a venue please do let me know, otherwise I have a couple in mind.

OK, so over three years I have completely rebuilt my 1990 SEIW Westie as a road going “classic” sports car and replacement for two wheel enjoyment. The Westie has been an excellent choice; although “pressing on” down country lanes with the willing Crossflow “barking” away up front, it can feel more Vintage Sports Car Club than Westfield Sports Car Club!

cylinder head, I began to feel confident that finally the Westie had enough power to take to the track.

In the never ending search for a little more power, this season I have mostly replaced the downdraught Weber 32/36 DFV with Honda CBR900RR 38mm Keihin carburettors, using the Danst Engineering inlet manifold. This has really changed the character of the car, introducing real “urge” and a wonderful inlet/exhaust note, which makes it difficult to keep your foot out of it, especially like me if you have a lead foot and a ball bearing for an ankle joint!

April 24th 2021 was our first MSVT Track Evening at Snetterton. I drove the 30 miles not knowing what issues the track would reveal and whether I would make it back home. Though it was cold and cloudy, thankfully it remained dry as the Toyo 888Rs make the Westie “a little frisky” in the wet and with no wind shield I am quite exposed in the open cockpit. When I arrived, there was an eclectic bunch of around 50 cars on track including several (rhymes with) “Catering Vans”.

Having previously driven my modified TVR Tuscan, and more recently my heavily modified 300bhp Astra VXR, on Snetterton Track days and after a lot of jet/needle/timing changes and a rebuilt

Due to the lock-down my son had not driven the Westie, so he did the warm-up laps to acclimatise himself. After a few laps he reported bad fuel starvation in left hand corners, but apart from that he

thought the Westie was “pretty quick”, which is praise indeed as he regularly takes his Vauxhall VX220 (built on the same production line as the early Lotus Elise) on track days. The Westie was definitely holding its own, but a little later the new alternator failed and the rocker cover shook loose and covered the engine in oil. We called it a day and I drove home with no dramas.

Having hopefully sorted the issues the first Track Evening revealed, we are booked on another Track Evening at Snetterton on the 24th of June for further development.

In conclusion: tuning your own car for the occasional track evening adds yet another dimension to the already delightful experience of Westfield ownership.

AROUND THE WORLD Map-marker PEAK DISTRICT In April the COVID 19 restrictions were lifted sufficiently that, under the new rules, meetings in the Peak District for a group of six outdoors was possible.

So, for now, just a few of us met up, had a little run around the Peak District and ate lots of cake in between. April was one of the driest months on record, making for lovely dry roads and the sparkling spring sunshine accentuated the views as we drove along. We wrapped up warm as the cafe stops were all outside seating only, with no real fires to huddle round as we normally would.

All club members are welcome to join us for all or part of the day when the lifting of restrictions allow, which should have happened by the time this report gets published. Please keep an eye on the Events section of the forum, where I will advertise future meeting details.

We’re back! Although still with a way to go it’s great to be starting to head out of what for many has been an extended hibernation. In the last issue you may have read a number of updates from our area members including Glen Ivey who is rebuilding his wedding car and Steve Bamforth who is starting a new build.

It has been great to follow their progress through the forum in the Build Diaries section and really shows how much thought and care goes into making a Westfield.

I have been back in the garage again with a few minor alterations… a 3D printed bezel for my AIM dash to sink it into the main dashboard. Huge thanks to Paul Aspden who did all of the hard work and has generously posted the files in the 3D Printing section of the forum so anyone can download and take them to their local printers. Having experienced the process of computer modelling and 3D printing it really does open your mind to endless possibilities and a new way of working.

I’ve also had another go at my cycle wing brackets. As I run 215 width front tyres and had poorly bent the brackets, I had been forced to cut the inner sides of the arches during the recent rebuild. This not only didn’t look great but also weakened the arch so time for a fresh approach. This time I cut the round tube of the brackets about 20mm lower than Westfield and bent some new flat bar to the contour of my tyres. It took a couple of attempts to get it right but finally it gave enough clearance to mount the arches centrally and low on the tyre. Last time I mounted

I was a bit late due to having been for an early morning run up to Caffeine and Machine in Stratford upon Avon

the arches using big head fasteners which was fine but this time I’ve used high strength silicon (sikaflex) to bond them to the brackets. This has the added advantage of vibration insulation so they should stay there and continue to look good for many years to come.

Enough about me, I said at the start of this little section that we are back. With lockdown easing and the vaccine rollout well established our area has started to recommence meets. In May we headed to a new venue in Newbury which was thankfully brought to our attention by Carlie Norwell from A-Plan Insurance. It is a café, meeting point, and supercar dealer all in one and a great place for us to drive out too. It was great to see people again and the feedback was so good there is talk of returning multiple times to use it as a base from which we can explore the local roads. I do have to apologise as I was a bit late due to having been for an early morning run up to Caffeine and Machine in Stratford upon Avon with some non-Westfield

car enthusiasts. We covered 170 miles that day and a few weeks later went to the Caterham factory open day followed by the beach where we did another 140 miles.

Oh the joys of being out in these cars and the satisfaction of driving something you built, happy days!

AROUND THE WORLD Map-marker WARWICKSHIRE With the continuing restrictions we have been limited to further online virtual meetings, using the usual Skype format.

As with our meetings earlier this year, the March and April gatherings were well attended by area regulars, though we did welcome a new face to the group at the April meeting.

Ian Grant joined us for the first time even though he is a long-time owner of a Westfield and WSCC member. Ian filled us in on the details of his car and the fact that although he has had the car a long time it has lain idle for many years due to the usual pressures of family and work etc. He has stripped it down to begin the restoration, hoping to get the vehicle roadworthy later this year.

Hopefully, Ian will complete a detailed report on the work for a future edition of the magazine.

Just to mention some of the upgrades undertaken by others recently, Ali and Gail took their Westfield to Procomp in Birmingham for a full suspension check and geometry set-up. Hedley has fitted an oil catch can and breather pipes to his Zetec engined car, which is a great achievement for someone new to Westfields and without any significant experience of working on cars. Andy and Becky have had the engine out of their car again in order to replace a faulty clutch.

gear with the engine running, a collapsed thrust bearing being the culprit.

With the lifting of some of the restrictions more opportunities to get out and about has allowed some to enjoy driving Westfields again. Geoff, Steve and Phil enjoyed a great members day event at the historic Shelsley Walsh venue, with Geoff in his classic pre-lit, crossflow, Phil in a Honda S2000 powered version and Steve taking pictures. Geoff has owned his car for many years and has regularly driven at Shelsley and after running his car on the hill he explored the difference between the cars as he jumped into the passenger seat of Phil’s car for a very fast run up the hill. The comment of it being a real flyer underscored the contrast in performance between them. Also in contrast was the fact that Phil was three days into ownership of his Westfield at the time! By the time this is published we will have had our first Warwickshire Area track day at the Curborough Sprint circuit on the 28th of May, a full report will be in the next magazine.

As the UK road map to derestriction appears to be going well, the 17th of May brought us a major change, allowing indoor hospitality to re-open and larger groups from different households to meet outdoors too. Our next meeting was scheduled for the 20th of May, so we were looking forward to a proper face to face meeting at The Falcon for the first time this year. Clearly, we have discussed this during our virtual

meetings and everyone was really looking forward to it and hoping for some reasonable weather for a bumper turnout of Westfields. Unfortunately, the reality was some absolutely abysmal weather, high winds, heavy rain and cold.

No one braved the elements but there was a good gathering of people, with Hedley and Tom meeting us regulars for the first time in real life, not virtually, as had been the norm for the last six or seven months.

We gathered in the outdoor seating area, about fourteen strong at the peak, before drifting back down to half a dozen by closing time. The outdoor area, with lots of open sides for ventilation, the wind flapping the fabric and vinyl of the structure, combined with the sound of the beating rain, made for a quite cold and noisy environment for our get together. Fortunately we were kept so busy catching up with good friends, having a great laugh and being thoroughly engrossed in the moment of actually being ‘out’, that the weather faded into the background and it did not detract from it being a great meeting.

Thanks to all that attended, it was a brilliant start to the return to a more normal life, see you all again soon.

Map-marker WIRRAL & NORTH WALES After what seems an absolute age, finally things seem to be on the up and we’ve been able to get out in our cars as a group!

I had planned my first run for Monday 12th April, but sadly due to ignition problems the day before, I wasn’t able to go and a big thank you to Jeff for stepping in!

After spending a good week or so getting mine running again (don’t ask me what it was as I genuinely couldn’t tell you!) I put a message out on our WhatsApp group for what would be our first Sunday run of the year, the 25th April!

I had a healthy response with quite a few people saying they would like to attend.

We met at our usual spot, the Tudor Rose in Ledsham, but the traffic lights not working made things a bit more interesting than usual, thankfully it wasn’t too busy at that time on a Sunday morning!

So off we went, with Dave Y offering to lead the way for the first part off the run.

After a fairly clear and brisk journey, we arrived at a somewhat closed Ponderosa, oh dear! We parked up opposite the café, where I must admit it was cold and windy.

After a brief discussion, John mentioned he’d heard that the Rhug Estate was

pen on the A5. I led us back onto the A5104 towards Bala which is unfortunately full of 50 mph average speed cameras, where we picked up the A5 up towards the estate.

As we turned in, it was immediately apparent that it was very busy, perhaps others had had the same idea! We queued for a while and waited a long time for tea, but we were fed and watered at last! Angle-Double-Right

AROUND THE WORLD Map-marker YORKSHIRE As we're now getting closer to June, and hopefully the lockdown is easing, we should be able to get out and about again.

We have managed a couple of local runs, but the two meetings are still yet to restart, maybe June will see the pubs opening up again.

I'd like to welcome some new members, Pete Riley, Ross Sharp and John Taylor.

Pete has joined us on a run already, and I'm sure Ross and John will do so soon.

The first run was on the 17th April where we met at Squires Cafe before going on to Selby for fish and chips. Unluckily for us, the chippy closed at 2pm, we got there at 10 past! Fortunately, the cafe next door was open and welcomed us in (outside).

All the staff took a great deal of interest in the cars.

Angle-Double-Right We then headed up and over the Evo Triangle where again it was very cold, and back home along the B5105 towards Ruthin, a nice stretch of road. It was a decent run after a somewhat dodgy start, and thanks to those that came.

I’ve been busy on mine again, this time fitting some clamshell wings. This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a while now as the car had them from new, and the holes along the side of the body as evidence! I had finally found some for sale on Facebook marketplace, they were in unused condition, but had been sitting in garages since 1990 so not perfect, but good enough.

brackets, I feared this might take a while, but luckily our esteemed Editor had some lying around in his garage, as he is changing to cycle wings, perfect and thanks Andy!

After a few afternoons dodging the showers, the job was done. Having to extend the headlamp and side repeater wiring added some additional work but I’m very happy with the result, amazing how different the car looks now!

Hoping for many more runs this Summer, and very much looking forward to our two weekends away this year, keeping everything crossed they go ahead.

On 9th May, I had a ride to the Motorist with Barry Wilson in his Puma for the Cars and Coffee meeting, where we met Pete for the first time. The car of choice here seemed to be Blue RS Focus, they were everywhere, along with a number of supercars and classics.

May’s breakfast meeting should have been on the 16th, but the Swan and Cygnet are not doing breakfasts yet so some of us went over to Squires again for a bacon sarnie. It was a dull day with rain forecast, so not too many cars or bikes on show. The weather stayed fine up to leaving, but then a downpour arrived about a mile from the cafe. The only thing to do is keep driving, luckily, I wasn't too far from home.
