LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Jack Herbert

Season’s Greetings from Pius XI Catholic High School! During the hustle and bustle of the Christmas and New Year holidays, it can be easy to get distracted by the seemingly endless preparations, to-do lists, and extra events, which makes me even more grateful for the moments of pause and reflection that we have built into the school day. Earlier this month, the prayer during morning announcements focused on the Gospel message below from Matthew. It was a powerful reminder for me that true faith—faith that is deeply rooted in Jesus’ teachings and actively lived out every single day—offers the best protection against life’s storms. Challenges, we know, will inevitably come, but if we allow the word of God to be the foundation for our lives and our work, as we have done with the mission of Pius XI, then we can withstand the winds, rains and floods, and emerge ready to celebrate the many blessings that God has bestowed upon us.

And celebrate we will, for this past year was filled with many reasons to praise the Lord, including: a new partnership with UW-Madison’s College of Engineering (outlined in our feature story on pages 6 & 7); our 3rd Annual Popesfest (see page 5 for the recap); new faculty and staff who add to the richness of our school culture (check out pages 8 & 9 to meet a few of them); and a beautiful Advent Season that has brought our community together, to name a few.

I say it every year, but it bears repeating, our winter Examen issue is always my favorite because we have the opportunity to publicly thank and acknowledge the many generous donors who have provided us with gifts during the past fiscal year. We are blessed with a growing list of wonderful partners who make it possible for us to meet the needs of our students and carry out our mission. A listing of donors who gave $250 or more is located on pages 22-30.

In closing, I want to thank you for your belief in and commitment to our important mission. We simply would not be able to carry out our essential work if not for your support. Merry Christmas! May the Lord bless you in 2025 and beyond.

Jesus said to His disciples:

“Not everyone who says to m e, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.

Everyo ne who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house.

But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock. And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand.

The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined.”

— Matthew 7:21, 24-27

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL Ryan Krienke

Pius XI Catholic High School Supporters and Friends,

I hope this letter finds you and your family well as we approach the Christmas season. I’m writing to provide an update on the progress at Pius XI Catholic High School and to express our sincere gratitude for your generous support. I’m pleased to report that our new schedule and academic programming have been going very well this school year. The changes we implemented have allowed us to provide a more in-depth, enriching and cohesive educational experience for our students. Student engagement levels have been excellent and we have seen an improvement in overall attendance with this new schedule. While it was a significant change from the long-standing modular schedule, we’ve received very positive feedback from teachers, parents and even students! We look forward to seeing the positive impact that this will have on our students’ achievement over the next few years.

We’ve also been fortunate to welcome several new outstanding teachers to our faculty this year. Their passion for Catholic education and commitment to helping our students grow intellectually and spiritually has been a tremendous asset. We’re excited about the fresh perspectives and positive energy that they are bringing to our community.

In addition to the academic success this school year, I’m especially proud to share that our student-led assemblies, with a special focus on giving voice to various groups within our diverse community, have been a special addition to our school culture. Our students organized meaningful assemblies this first semester to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month and, for the first time, a group of students in collaboration with Mrs. Brown, developed a Native American Heritage assembly in November. Both of these were student-led and a great way to give visibility and voice to these two groups of students in our school. Coming up on Friday, February 28th, we will finish our celebration of Black History Month, with an assembly led by our Black Student Union (BSU). Please consider attending! These student-led efforts have fostered greater understanding and unity among our student body.

There is so much to celebrate and be thankful for at Pius XI Catholic High School. Your generous financial support makes our initiatives possible. Our students depend on your generosity. On behalf of our entire school community, thank you for your commitment to Pius XI Catholic High School and our mission of providing a transformative Catholic education. The Archdiocese and City of Milwaukee need Pius XI, as we are a staple and bedrock in Southeastern Wisconsin. We are deeply grateful for your partnership. I wish you and your family a blessed Christmas and a happy New Year.

Please consider joining us for a weekly Mass on Friday mornings at 7:10am in our beautiful chapel. You will be in the good company of students and faculty living out the prayerful mission of Catholic education.

In Christ,

PROVIDING POPES WI TH ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES AND MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT

Pius XI Catholic High School Partners with College of Engineering at UW-Madison

This August, Pius XI Catholic High School entered into a partnership with the College of Engineering at UWMadison to help advance progress towards a shared goal: promoting success in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education from the high school level through college graduation and, ultimately, employment. Both organizations recognize the growing demand for skilled engineers and the need to get more students interested in engineering and other STEM careers. The partnership will aim to create innovative pathways to prepare students transitioning from high school to college to the workforce.

Demonstrating the real-life application of engineering, as well as the impact engineers have on daily life, is key to cultivating interest in students at the high school level.

“Virtually everything in our world today has benefitted from an engineer. A smartphone is a great example: All of the materials used to make it, the electronics inside; a durable, high-resolution screen; its connectivity—all of those are possible because of engineering. Engineers drive innovation, and over the next decade, the world

will need hundreds of thousands of new engineers,” commented Ian Robertson, Grainger Dean of the College of Engineering at UW-Madison. “Our College of Engineering can help meet the demand for exceptional engineering leaders. That begins with introducing younger learners to the many ways they can make a difference in our world through engineering—and then partnering with select high schools to provide those students a pathway to be successful as engineering students in college. Our collaboration with Pius XI is not only a model for future partnerships, but also helps to ensure we continue to recruit, support, educate and graduate top engineers.”

The partnership kicked off with a campus visit to UWMadison on September 26 for Pius XI students who were nominated by faculty because of their interest and aptitude in STEM-related courses. More than 20 students toured the College of Engineering, with a special lab tour that provided hands-on, practical experience. Lunch and a panel discussion with current UW-Madison students gave Pius XI students a chance to ask questions about how to prepare for an engineering major and how to be successful once accepted.

For Junior Amiciana Moore ‘26, the visit was her first experience on a college campus and provided her with a better understanding of her options.

“Visiting the College of Engineering at UW-Madison was a very informative experience,” remarked Moore. “I was surprised after talking to one of their current students that you can earn multiple degrees along with your main engineering degree. They explained and made sure it was clear that engineering is actually very flexible to explore.”

Pius XI Dean of Instruction Allison Warhus, who coordinated the event alongside College of Engineering staff, is grateful for the awareness this partnership provides. Ms. Warhus

noted that engineering is often difficult to expose students to in high school because it requires special equipment that is often only available in university and business settings.

“Giving students the opportunity to visit a campus with equipment that they can literally play with—the students got to crush pencils and guess how much force it took among other things—shows them what is possible and what is coming next,” said Warhus. “It sparks their curiosity and excitement and helps them to see the ‘why’ more clearly.”

The campus visit is just the beginning of what is sure to be a mutually beneficial partnership. Pius XI students will have the opportunity to experience more through additional campus tours, participation in the College’s Engineering Expo, and access to virtual and on-campus summer programming for qualifying students. College of Engineering representatives will also visit Pius XI to present on careers, the college admissions and enrollment processes at UWMadison and student success factors.

Instrumental in bringing this partnership together, President Jack Herbert is excited that Pius XI has the

opportunity to collaborate with one of the top engineering programs in

“The exposure this partnership will provide to our students and staff is unmatched,” remarked Herbert. “Working together, Pius XI and UW-Madison have the opportunity to ‘connect the dots’ and bring engineering to life in a way that will inspire more students to dream of a career in engineering. It is our job at Pius XI to make sure they are well prepared to chase that dream and we are well positioned to do this with our robust and rigorous STEM curriculum.”

Empowering Minds: Elevating the Men tal Wellness of High School Students

Pius XI Leads the Way as One of Only Eleven Greater Milwaukee Area Schools

Earlier this year, Pius XI was selected by the United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha County to participate in their Teen Mental Wellness: Empowering Minds Program, which is aimed at changing the lives of high school students by promoting mental health equity, improving access to mental health services, reducing stigma, increasing mental health literacy among adults and students, and fostering healthier school environments. The program, which launched in 2022, recently expanded to include nine additional high schools and Pius XI is proud to be among those selected. This expansion will help the United Way move closer to its goal of elevating the mental wellness of 21,000 high school students by 2030.

In the program, Pius XI will work towards becoming an Empowering Minds Mental Health School of Distinction by building a Comprehensive School Mental Health System based on the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s framework, which provides a continuum of services to promote student mental health and wellbeing. A Mental Wellness Team, made up of individuals representing key stakeholder groups, including academic leadership, counseling staff, students, parents, faculty and our third party mental health partners including Children’s Wisconsin meets monthly with our Implementation Coach from CESA 6 to move this important work forward.

Through the multi-year partnership agreement, Pius XI will be eligible to receive up to $50,000 each year while the school is actively working to develop and implement a comprehensive school mental health system. Once the school transitions from the implementation phase to the sustainability phase, it will receive a maximum of $25,000 for up to two years to support the sustainability of the school’s comprehensive school mental health system as Empowering Minds financial support comes to a close. During the sustainability phase, we will work to further identify and secure additional financial support for the continuation of the system developed under Empowering Minds.

Members of Pius XI’s REDgen Chapter look forward to the additional resources that will be provided through the Empowering Minds program.

GETTING TO KNOW PI US

MR. JEREMY HORKY

ENG INEERING TEACHER & RUBE GOLDBERG TEAM MODERATOR

Serving Pius XI Popes Since 2023

Tell us about your professional background.

“I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from Marquette University, graduating in May 2020. Shortly after graduation, I began working as an Electrical and Computer Engineer for a patent law firm in Milwaukee where I wrote and defended patents for new technologies in artificial intelligence, internet technology, and smart devices, as well as control systems for heavy machinery used in mining and power grid upkeep. After working in patent law for two years, I decided that a desk job wasn’t for me, and decided to accelerate my plans on getting into education. I applied for and was accepted to Marquette University’s Noyce Scholars program, designed to help people with Bachelor’s degrees in STEM fields earn a Master of Education in STEM Teaching, in which I concentrated on Computer Science Education and graduated in August of 2024. Around the same time as starting this program, I also was hired part-time at Pius XI, which quickly turned into a full-time teaching position to also function as my student teaching experience. I have been very happily teaching at Pius XI ever since!”

What classes do you currently teach at Pius XI and which one is your favorite?

“I teach four classes: UWM Dual-Enrollment Computer Science 150 and Computer Science 250, Intro to Engineering & Design, and Computer Science Discoveries. I really enjoy UWM CS 150, since it is an incredibly broad computer science course used to serve as both an introduction to and exploration of the field. It is designed for students who are strong in math and have some interest in computer science, as well as for students who are definitely interested in computer science and want to learn more specifics of how computers work!”

How do you measure success?

“I measur e success based fully on whether students are both enjoying class, and doing well in it. I see engineering and computer science at Pius XI as classes designed to make students excited about potential STEM careers. As such, I am not only looking for students who do well in these classes, but also those who seem genuinely excited by the prospect of attending college for Engineering or going to school for an electrician’s or mechanic’s license. Pius XI has such a unique program to help prepare these students, and I believe that success for me, as a teacher, happens when students are able to take advantage of this program and discover an interest in STEM fields!”

As the new Rube Goldberg Team moderator, what are your plans for the team in the future?

“First and foremost, the team is trying really hard to have a repeat victory at the national championship this year! My students are putting forth a ton of effort and have come up with some absolutely wild ideas (no spoilers here: come to the regional championship on March 14, 2025 at Discovery World to check out our machine)! I am super excited to see them succeed again, and my immediate goal is to support them and help them create the best machine they can.

In the future, I am hoping to create some opportunities for students who are not involved in the Rube Goldberg Team (including prospective Pius XI students!) to get involved with summer camps and live demonstrations to see what we’re all about! Rube is an awesome program, and I really want more people to know about it. Finally, I am hoping that with enough interest and an assistant coach, we will be able to start a second team at Pius XI to have both a Varsity and a Junior Varsity Rube team to allow even more interested students to participate!”

MRS. SUE KAHLER

READING SPECIALIST

Serving Pius XI Popes Since 2024

“I have a Bachelor’s Degree in English Lan guage and Literature from the University of San Diego and a Master’s Degree in English Language and Literature from Marquette University. Starting in 2013, I had the pleasure of teaching sixth grade homeroom and middle school English Language Arts at St. Anthony on the Lake in Pewaukee. In 2021, I transitioned to Marquette University High School to create a new academic coaching program for juniors and seniors that focused on developing executive functioning and academic skills. This year I joined Pius XI as the reading specialist and feel blessed to be part of the Popes’ community. My husband Russ and I have lived in Brookfield since 2001 where we raised our three wonderful sons. In the past 18 months, we have welcomed two daughters-in-law and an adorable new grandson to our family.”

What does a reading specialist do? Tell us more about your job and how you help our students.

“As the reading specialist at Pius XI, I teach Literacy Lab, a small group intervention-based class. The course instructs students to utilize metacognitive skills to improve reading comprehension, increase reading stamina and fluency, and foster students’ interest in reading. Literacy Lab also focuses on teaching students Latin and Greek root affixes to help them decode and comprehend multisyllabic words that appear across

According to the 2022 National Assessment of Educational Progress—known as the Nation’s Report Card—only 33% of fourth-grade students in the U.S. are reading at or above the proficient level. Pius XI is not immune to this national issue that has been growing for decades, seeing an uptick in new students who are reading below grade level. Lower reading proficiency greatly impacts success in all coursework. Students struggling with reading are more likely to demonstrate behavioral issues, as well as suffer socially and emotionally. To help address the issue, Pius XI has focused on literacy intervention efforts, including offering Literacy Lab, a small group intervention-based class led by Reading Specialist Mrs. Sue Kahler.

disciplines. In addition to reading skills, students advance their mechanics, usage, and grammar skills to further their comprehension at the sentence-level and improve their language awareness.”

How do you measure success, and what feels like “a win” for you and your students?

“I measure success in multiple ways, but I am data conscious. Diagnostic testing helps identify specific needs; however, I also use anecdotal evidence, such as student feedback, to determine pace and class structure.

A “win” comes in multiple forms: proficient or advanced achievement on summative reading skills assessments, students’ improved performance in other academic courses, and, most importantly, students’ increased interest in reading.”

As someone newer to Pius XI, what makes Pius XI special in your opinion?

“As a new member of Pius XI, I am amazed at the community. The school is a model of collegiality and collaboration that embodies its core values. Each member of Pius XI’s staff works diligently to meet students’ academic, emotional, and spiritual needs. Students frequently mention how generous the teachers are with their time and talents. The teachers and administration live the Pallottine mission of a community for all, demonstrated by their tireless, student-centric efforts. Pius XI is a place where all are truly welcomed and treated with the Franciscan values of respect and dignity.”

It is with tremendous gratitude that we acknowledge Mrs. Sally Graf ‘62 whose multi-year commitment funds a dedicated Reading Specialist for the next four Academic Years, beginning with our current school year.

“Every time I read and hear in the news that only one-third of young people are proficient in reading, I think no wonder kids are so frustrated, there must be more we can do,” said Mrs. Graff.

“I believe in the power of education and the role it plays in preventing intergenerational poverty. I want to do what I can to make sure the students graduating from Pius XI are happy, working, and living fulfilled lives.”

PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS: ADVENT AT PIUS XI

The holiday season is a special time at Pius XI, where faith, tradition, and community come together to celebrate the sacredness of Advent and prepare for the joyous arrival of Christmas. Rooted in our Catholic values, the school creates a meaningful atmosphere that reflects the true spirit of the season.

Throughout Advent, the school is adorned with purple decorations—a color rich in significance. Purple, symbolizing penance and preparation, sets a tone of reflection and hope. From banners and ribbons to classroom décor, the vibrant displays remind students and faculty of this sacred season’s call to prepare their hearts for the coming of Christ.

The heart of the school’s Advent celebrations is the beautifully arranged nativity scene displayed in the main lobby. On loan to Pius XI by St. Bernard’s Parish, this nativity scene serves as a visual reminder of the humble beginnings of Jesus’s life and invites all who pass by to reflect on the profound meaning of His birth. Beside it, the Advent wreath with its four candles represents the weeks of Advent, each week bringing its own theme: hope, peace, joy, and love.

On December 9, our entire school community gathered in the Fieldhouse for Mass to celebrate the Feast of the

Immaculate Conception, honoring Mary’s purity and her role as the Mother of God. This special Mass is not only a tribute to Mary’s significance in the Church but also an opportunity for students to reflect on her unwavering faith and trust in God’s plan.

Supported by students of our SOL (Sociedad Orgulloso de Latinos) Club, this Mass was performed in both English and Spanish as is tradition at Pius XI. This allows us to extend the celebration to Our Lady of Guadalupe (la Virgen de Guadalupe), whose feast day follows shortly after on December 11 and is a very important milestone in the liturgical year, especially for those of Latin-American culture or heritage. This dual focus highlights Mary’s universal significance, emphasizing her role as a source of comfort and hope for all people, especially for those who seek her intercession. The stories of her appearances inspire students to emulate her compassion, humility, and devotion.

At Pius XI, Advent is more than a season—it is a journey of spiritual growth and unity. By honoring the traditions of Advent, and the ecumenical celebration of Christmas, Pius XI ensures that the true meaning of the season shines brightly in the hearts of all.

IN MEMORIAM

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them, may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Dear Pius XI Community,

I am truly excited to serve this community as the new Director of Finance for Pius XI Catholic High School and look forward to what we can accomplish together. I come to this role with a background in nonprofit accounting, most recently serving as the Director of Parish & School Financial Consulting for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, where I provided guidance to parishes and schools on a wide range of financial topics, including budgeting, financial reporting, payroll, and compliance. I am proud to say that I attended Catholic Schools from kindergarten through college. I graduated from Marquette University where I obtained my B.S. with majors in both Accounting and Human Resources. My husband and I live in Muskego with our four children, and when we’re not busy shuttling them to various activities, we enjoy taking family vacations and spending time outdoors.

Service has always been a passion of mine and I believe that Pius XI’s rich history and the sense of community are what make this place so special. The “community feel” of Pius XI is something that is evident the moment you walk through the doors. It is this strong foundation that drives my commitment to ensuring the school’s financial health for future generations of Popes. My goal is to help balance the budget each year and strengthen the school’s financial position, while also creating efficiencies through implementing best practices. I look forward to working closely with both the academic and non-instructional staff to streamline processes and be a resource for everyone here.

Our annual financial report is included on these pages and you will see that our school reported an operating surplus in the 2023-2024 fiscal year.

Sincerely,
