pius welcome Dear Pius X & Cathedral High School Alumni, Parents & Friends, On Divine Mercy Sunday, Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II were canonized Saints by Pope Francis. These leaders of the Catholic Church embodied the call to holiness, the call to evangelize, and the call to be witnesses of joy in a world filled with broken promises and fragile peace. Their witness reminds us all that we are called to be Saints - in our daily lives, in our own skin, with all our gifts and limitations. We thank God for their impact in our lives and we pray for their intercession for us. On May 18th, we welcome 260 graduates to the rank of alumni. Once again, I am amazed by our incredible students. These young men and women, the 58th graduating class from Pius X, excelled in countless ways that you will see throughout this issue. More than 95% of our seniors are enrolled in higher education, more than 10% of them have earned a 30 or higher on the ACT and more than 30 of them earned regent scholarships. Our Academic Decathlon team won state and placed fifth at Nationals. Boys Tennis and girls Cross Country won state and girls Basketball placed second. Most of our other activities earned entrance into state tournaments as a team or with individuals, and we have many spring activities still going on. Having been blessed to be in the spring musical, White Christmas, I was reminded of the talent, dedication, hard work, time, and team-work by so many students, teachers, coaches, volunteers, and parents for every team, class, performance, etc. We are blessed. Thank you seniors and be assured of our prayers that you always stay close to the Lord and do well in life. I also want to congratulate three staff members who are retiring. Mr. Michael Murphy is retiring after 29 years as head of our Band program. A teacher for 38 years, Mr. Murphy will still be employed full-time by Pius X as one of three elementary band teachers in our Catholic elementary schools. Mrs. Margaret Kaiser-Woodward, Math department chair, is retiring after a 30 year teaching career - 21 years in Catholic education, and 13 years at Pius X. I am grateful that Margaret will continue to help with our Academic Decathlon team. Mr. Alfredo Garcia, assistant maintenance director, is retiring after seven years at Pius X. He intends to move to Texas to be with his family. BOLT 2014, “The Sky is the Limit,” celebrated its 29th anniversary. This important and elegant fundraising event benefits the students of Pius X and was a joyous and successful evening. A special thanks to Mrs. Deb Schulte and the executive committee of BOLT for doing a fantastic job. Final numbers are still coming in, Superintendent Fr. Jim Meysenburg was an added bonus for the but it looks like we should net more than $222,000. This amount cast, crew, and audience for the spring musical, “White Christmas.” will be paired with Give To Lincoln Day donations to fund several capital improvement projects, including a new roof on the physical education/practice gym, renovation of original rest rooms in the school, up-grading the lighting and acoustics in the LPAC, additional air-conditioning in a computer lab, continued improvements to our east parking lot, and maintaining our facilities. Pius X will participate for the third year in the Give To Lincoln Day on May 29th. This one-day, city-wide philanthropic push has been very successful for Pius X having funded a three-phase renovation of our chemistry labs the last two years. As stated above, this year’s funds will be used with the BOLT funds for several projects. Thank you for your prayer and support for Pius X High School. May your summer bring joyful times with family, relaxation and rejuvenation! Let us continue to pray for one another. Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Father Jim Meysenburg, Superintendent

Pius X and Catholic Education is a Family Tradition

Charlene and Clancy Woolman, Cathedral ’56, have four children and three grandchildren, including Kat Woolman ’13, who are all Pius X alumni.

by Sophia Werning

Imagine being a junior at a small, urban Catholic high school in the mid1950s. Life as you know it is about to change. While attending classes in what once was an apartment building, your Bishop announces that a larger, new school is being built on the outskirts of town, amidst corn fields. Many decisions need to be made. You and your classmates are given the opportunity to vote on the new school colors. The winners: forest green and gold. Your old mascot, “Bluebirds”, would be changed to the “Thunderbolts” – inspired by a loud clap of thunder that struck as the future superintendent and head football coach were traversing the countryside scouting opponents for an upcoming game. And you’ll have a new football field, to boot.

The best part - construction of the school is lagging behind. The school year will start four weeks late. This is one of the fondest memories of George Easley ’57, who had a front row seat at the cusp of a new generation of Catholic high school students who made their mark as the inaugural graduating class of Pius X. “We had four football games before classes even started at the new school,” Easley recalls with a smile. Cathedral High School in downtown Lincoln took on a new name when it opened its doors on October 1, 1956. “Cathedral High and Pius X are the same,” he emphasizes. “It was all the same students. We just had different school colors, a new location, and a new team name. The name ‘Bluebirds’ at Cathedral was so scary and ferocious,” he chuckles.

“And we changed to the ‘Thunderbolts.’” The rich tradition of Catholic secondary education in Lincoln has now spanned three generations, and has had a lasting impact. Whether it is in the area of academics, service to the community, athletics, music and performing arts, or most importantly, Catholic identity, Pius X has become an integral, important part of the city and Diocese of Lincoln. “God has allowed many blessings on our family as a result of me, our children and our grandchildren attending Pius X,” reflects Pam McCabe ’71. “Academically, Pius X excels in educating a student in all high school courses. More importantly, it is prayer, duty and love of God, plus moral courage, which we all need, that is taught as part of our Catholic faith

When she began her freshman year, Hanna Schafers ’14 was grateful to have parents and grandparents who once attended Pius to give her a primer on being a Thunderbolt. “It’s interesting going to school and having some of the same teachers as my parents,” she says. wife Betty ’63 attended before marrying and starting their family. “It’s been wonderful to see the school change and grow, along with our family.” Betty adds: “It’s great to have the tradition of our family going to the same school and receiving a strong Catholic education.” “I’m the oldest of seven who all went to Pius X, a great start to our further education,” Ann Cusick ’69 reflects. It is here that she met her future husband Nick ’69, and they are proud that their four daughters attended their alma mater. “Having our granddaughter Kate (Rawlinson) attend and soon graduate from Pius is a bonus,” Ann says. Nick adds that he appreciates the “extra attention

to morality, service to others and other Christian principals which are a great addition to the high quality curriculum and dedicated staff at Pius X.” The Cusicks’ daughter, Jennifer Rawlinson, agrees. “A quality Catholic education offers the best of both worlds – a high-level academic preparation and a foundation in character and community,” she says. “As a bonus, Pius offers a family atmosphere. We’re grateful that Kate has an opportunity to attend Pius X. It has grown and changed so much since we (Jennifer ’92 and her husband, Jeff ’91) attended in the early 90s and I think – then and now – the experience of attending Pius is unparalleled.”

Pius X Academic Decathlon Places 5th in the Nation by Sophia Werning

Earning medals at the National Academic Decathlon Competition were Philip Hanigan, Abigail Miller, Stephen Kotopka, Matthew Sievert and Nathan Kramer. The Academic Decathlon team is made up of students at all academic levels. The 12 person team worked hard, studying for more than 10 months to prepare for the competition.

After a remarkable season of competition, Pius X’s Academic Decathlon team emerged as one of the top 5 teams in the country at the National Academic Decathlon Competition held in Honolulu, Hawaii, on April 24-26, 2014. The team placed an impressive 5th place in the medium school division, and brought a total of 11 medals home to Lincoln. The exhilarating trip included an opportunity to compete at the highest level and an opportunity to explore the breathtaking sights and fascinating cultural aspects of Hawaii. This past February, the Pius X Academic Decathlon team members were crowned state champions at the 2014 Academic Decathlon State Tournament held at the University of Nebraska Omaha on February 22, earning them a berth at nationals. The victory marked the first time in school history that Pius X won first place at the state tournament, remarkably, after only four years of competition. Pius X Decathletes – who were runners-up at the state tournament in 2013 – bested last year’s state champions Creighton Prep in the large school category, earning the Thunderbolts a trip to nationals. Academic Decathlon is a 10-event scholastic competition for teams of high school students across the nation. Each high school enters a team of nine students: three “A” or Honor students, three “B” or Scholastic students, and three “C or below” or Varsity students. The theme

for the 2013–2014 Academic Decathlon season was World War I. This year’s team members are seniors: Robert Bryant, Claire Henrichsen, Stephen Kotopka, Nathan Kramer, Abigail Miller, and Matthew Sievert; juniors: Cory Liesch, and Philip Hanigan; and sophomore Henry Jaros. Alternates are: senior Daniel Beals; junior Lucy Kohmetscher, and sophomore Catherine Krueger. The Academic Decathlon coaches are Margaret Kaiser-Woodward, Mary Jo Kopf, and Ann Kotopka. Father Steve Mills and parent chaperones Mike Kotopka, Michelle Liesch and Curt Krueger accompanied the team to nationals. “This year’s team represents a group of Pius students who studied over the span of ten months to achieve something very special,” Coach Kotopka reflects. “Participation in the national competition and the successes achieved were a rewarding way to end our season. We are humbled to have the opportunity to represent Pius X and the state of Nebraska and grateful to all that made the trip possible.” Individual medalists are: Honor Level – Philip Hanigan, Top Team Scorer, Gold medals in Art and Science, and Bronze medals in Music and Economics; Stephen Kotopka, Silver medal in Art. Scholastic Level – Nathan Kramer, Gold medals in Essay and Art; Bronze medals in Music and Social Science; Abigail Miller, Bronze medal in Art. Varsity Level – Matthew Sievert, Gold medal in Social Science. Claire Henrichsen received the Most

Valuable Player vote by her team and a $250 scholarship. Each of the coaches and team members received a participation medal. “Many of the goals of Academic Decathlon were transparent during our open time in Honolulu,” Kaiser-Woodward notes. “We experienced a challenging multidisciplinary learning environment.” For example, science and nature were on display as students went on a hike at Diamond Head and snorkeled at the Hanauma Bay National Wildlife Reserve. Students immersed themselves in music and the arts at a traditional luau that consisted of different music and dance from the Polynesian islands of Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa, and Micronesia. A 4-hour tour of Pearl Harbor offered a close-up history lesson on one of the most important historical events that changed the world. “The effort put forth by our students has been amazing, and it is gratifying to see them succeed,” Kaiser-Woodward reflects. “The bonds they developed and the pride they took in each other’s success was wonderful to see and experience.” This unity was strengthened further during daily Mass celebrated by Father Mills during their trip. “Celebrating the Mass gave us the opportunity to come together and reflect on the different gifts and graces our Lord has given each of us,” Kaiser-Woodward explains. “The memories created by this journey far outweigh any medals won and will be cherished for a lifetime.”

Drafting Department Gifted with a 3-Dimensional Printer by Sophia Werning

Thanks to two anonymous donors, Pius X recently added state-of-the-art technology to its mechanical and architectural drafting curriculum. The addition of a MakerBot Replicator 2 allows students in to witness their drafting designs come to life using 3-D printing technology. The new printer will enable students in engineering design and advanced mechanical drafting classes to create professionalquality, high-resolution prototypes and complex models. Industrial Technology instructor Don McKee, whose department is the recipient of the new 3-D printer, explains that advanced mechanical drafting students will use the device to create small assemblies that they will then take apart and “reverse” engineer in a new and different manner. In the future, McKee envisions the technology also being incorporated into the advanced engineering curriculum and by the Physics department. “After originally meeting with the donors, I was so excited and so grateful for

The MakerBot Replicator 2 is a positive addition and a great learning opportunity for Pius’ advanced mechanical drafting students. In the future, engineering physics students will also use the technology.

this exceptional gift,” McKee says. Before the actual model was chosen for purchase, McKee assigned four advanced mechanical engineering students the task of researching different types of 3-D printers, comparing and contrasting the various models available, and making a justified recommendation on which model to purchase within the funding limits. “It was amazing – the students’ number one choice turned out to be the same exact model that the donors chose as well,” McKee explains. “They are really excited about it, and this experience truly validated their research and work.” In addition to the printer, the donor is providing the classroom a 3-D scan-

ner used in conjunction with the printer, allowing for pre-designing models using 3-D imaging. As far as McKee is aware, Pius X is one of only three high schools in Lincoln and the only Catholic school in the region using this technology in the classroom. “As parents of two Pius X students, we can see how this cutting edge technology will inspire our children and so many others,” the donors explain. “We are so thankful for Pius X in accepting this gift and incorporating it into their curriculum. Pius X is a wonderful school, and we are excited to provide the students in the Industrial Technology department with this gift.”

You Can Protect Catholic Education, Give an Everlasting Gift When George Easley’s wife passed away in 2011, he and his family decided to establish a scholarship at Pius X in her memory. It was a natural choice as Joanne believed deeply in Catholic education and Pius X High School. “Planned Giving is so very important – it ensures our school will be around for many generations to come,” comments George, a 1957 Pius X alumnus. “I encourage everyone to write down and figure out which of several charities to designate and be recognized in a will. There were two charities on the top of our list that we wanted to leave a legacy with - our parish and Pius X.” George says it’s very easy to designate a certain amount or percentage of your estate, just “treat your charity like another child”. “We chose to give to Pius X from our IRA,” George explains adding that this ensures that the gift would not be taxed and that every dollar would benefit Pius X’s students. “Joanne and I are making this gift not only in our memory, but for the sake of our children and grandchildren.” You can protect the future of Catholic education and Pius X High School through a planned or deferred gift, including will bequests; as the beneficiary of a trust, retirement account, or life insurance; gifting of real estate; or by creating a life income agreement (trust, charitable gift or annuity). Your gift will impact the future, ensure that a Christ-centered education remains affordable for all students and their families, and leave a lasting legacy.

Students Receive Best of WordStruck Live Awards

“The Wildwoods” is an acoustic music group featuring senior Noah Pinkman and sophomores Chloe Pinkman and Noah Gose. The group entertained the crowd with their original music which includes folk, pop, fiddle, and rock.

Serving as the emcees for WordStruck Live were seniors Kathryn Budell and Joey Murphy. The event capped off the 19th year for the WordStruck program which encourages students to develop their God-given gifts as writers and artists.

WordStruck Live attendees enjoyed the live table reading of Nicholas Theisen’s prequel script of “The Office: Interviews.”

Original music, poetry, art, videography and creative writing were celebrated during the first ever “Best of WordStruck Live” award show held on Saturday, May 3rd. The student-led, red carpet event featured the “best of the best” among the student, faculty and alumni submissions received over the past school year that were recognized on Pius X’s literary website, WordStruck.net. Sponsored through a grant from the U.S. Bank Nebraska Foundation, WordStruck.net provides students at Pius X with an exciting and unique way to engage in literacy and the arts. The website is one of the only online cooperative ventures of its kind at the high school or collegiate level in the nation. Whether it is creating lyrics to music, writing poetry and essays, or through editing and videography, WordStruck.net provides students the opportunity to have

their creative work published and widely viewed online. Out of 210 submissions received this year, WordStruck.net has published 90 pieces of writing, visual art, photography, original musical recordings and creative videos. “Our web site eclipsed 11,000 hits by the time we held the live event,” says Pius X English teacher and WordStruck advisor Jeremy Ekeler, who two years ago came up with the idea of bringing the school’s literary magazine WordStruck into the digital age through this online medium. The award show highlighted the top five finalists in four categories. Winners in each category were announced live at the event and include: Poetry - “The Years” by David Cao, Narative/Short Story - “Covered Tins” by Katie Rice, Photography - “Graduation” by John Boes, and Dynamic (artwork, music, and multimedia) - “ThunderBoo Painting and

Poem” by Monica Condon. “The Cage That was Your Heart” by Lauren Schieke (multi-genre poem, script, story, painting and photography combination) was named the Best of Wordstruck for the favorite piece of the year. The event included student performances and presentations. Emcees of the event were seniors Kathryn Budell and Joey Murphy. Musical entertainment was provided by The Wildwoods, featuring recording artists and sophomores Chloe Pinkman and Noah Gose and senior Noah Pinkman, and other artists. In addition to the support from U.S. Bank Nebraska Foundation, the literary web site has received in-kind support from web designer and Pius X alumna Bridget (Ellingson) Bredenkamp ’98 of Design by Bridge in Lincoln, Neb. To view all submissions including the “best of the best” award winners, please visit: www.wordstruck.net.

Faculty and Staff Volunteer at Kids Against Hunger During their annual retreat, Pius X faculty and staff gathered for Mass before going to the Kids Against Hunger warehouse to package meals for people who are in need. In just two hours, they packaged enough meals to feed almost 25,000 people. If one is ever in search of a community service project for family or an organization, this is a great one to get involved. For only $90, one child can be fed for an entire year. One can get overwhelmed with the enormity of poverty that exists in our city, country and world, but we can make a difference even in one person’s life. Pius X Spanish Teachers Present at National Conference Pius X Spanish teachers Amy Roberts and Katie Hayes ’99 presented a foreign language education workshop, “Keeping it in the Target Language” at the 2014 Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (CSCTFL) held on March 20-22, in St. Louis, Mo. Roberts and Hayes, along with Aleidine Moeller from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln (UNL), presented the day-long training session focused on the overall goal of improving the quality of foreign language instruction. Founded in 1969, the CSCTFL is a regional foreign language organization that serves 17 Midwestern states through its annual spring conference that attracts approximately 1,500 participants from all around the U.S. In addition to exchanging ideas and best practices, workshops such as the one presented by Roberts and Hayes are meant to generate excitement about language learning and to energize language educators. “Katie has been my hero and role

model since I was her student-teacher five years ago,” Roberts says of her colleague and fellow presenter. “She has taught me everything I know about teaching in the Target Language. We shared our experiences and best practices to a very captive audience.” “Working at Pius has been a Godsend,” Roberts continues. “I feel blessed every single day to be able to come here to ‘work’ every day. My colleagues are incredible, our administration has been so supportive, our department is outstanding, and our students are a joy to teach.” Roberts received her Masters of Art in Education from UNL in the spring of 2012. She has been teaching at Pius X since the spring of 2010 when she began as student teacher. In addition to teaching Spanish, Roberts serves as sponsor of Club World Aid and is the Girls Junior

Varsity Soccer Coach. Hayes received her Master of Arts in Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the spring of 2013. She began teaching at Pius X in the fall of 2003. In addition to teaching Spanish, Hayes is co-sponsor of the Spanish Club. “I was touched to be invited to be a part of this workshop,” Hayes reflects. “Presenting with Amy was inspiring. Her enthusiasm for teaching is contagious, and it is clear she loves her students and her job.” At Pius X, the foreign language department is often referred to as the “Dream Team.” “The Spanish department works so well together and, as a result of years of collaboration and sharing, we are seeing the positive effects in students’ work,” Hayes notes.

Mike Murphy Steps Down as Band Director by Sophia Werning

More than 30 Pius X Alumni were on hand to honor Mr. Mike Murphy during his final high school band concert. His senior band students organized a special tribute to Mr. Murphy, including a special memory book filled with pictures and letters from his former and current students and parents.

After nearly three decades, Pius X Band Director and music instructor Mike Murphy will be orchestrating a new chapter of his life. Murphy has announced that he is stepping down as Band Director for the high school, but will continue to be employed by Pius X as an instructor for area Catholic elementary and junior high schools in Lincoln. Murphy’s dedication, strong leadership, and unfailing passion for music and the band program has impacted thousands of students over the past 29 years, many of whom have gone on to study and perform music in college and beyond. Under Murphy’s tenure, the band has grown

and flourished. The incoming freshman class will have one of the largest groups in school history participating in the program - 131 students. Murphy has taught music for a total of 38 years. In addition to Band, Murphy teaches Music Appreciation, Jazz History, and Music Theory; and has taught Band at St. Mary, Sacred Heart, and St. Peter Catholic grade schools. Murphy recently received the high honor of being inducted into Phi Beta Mu International School Bandmasters’ Fraternity in recognition of his exceptional career. “It has been amazing to watch our band program grow over the years under

Mike’s leadership,” Pius X Principal Tom Korta reflects. “He has brought a wealth of knowledge and a love for music to the 100+ kids under his care each year.” Reflecting upon his distinguished career, Murphy says “it’s especially gratifying when a former student tells me that Band was the favorite part of their day and that they have a lasting love of music because of it. I find that when I talk to former students, they rarely remember a contest rating, but they remember the music, the performance, their friends, and the trips. That’s what has mattered most.” During his tenure at Pius X, Murphy has taught two generations of music students. “It’s fun to teach kids of former students,” he reflects. A beloved teacher and mentor, Murphy’s students hold many fond memories of participating in Band under Murphy. “I think he has made the department like a family, so kids want to stay in it all four years once they join,” explains senior tenor saxophonist Joey Murphy, nephew of Mr. Murphy. Senior percussionist Matthew Sievert adds that “I will definitely remember all the things he taught me when I go to college – not just in music, but things like teamwork, dedication and other life skills.”

FOUNDATION

Michelle Birkel

Director of Development

Dear Pius X and Cathedral High School Alumni, Parents and Friends, Greetings from the Pius X Foundation. I feel incredibly blessed. I have the opportunity to meet with many people who remind me daily how Pius X has impacted them, the spiritual foundation instilled in them and the great education that is offered. I am excited about this issue of Pius Connections, as we are telling more of our Pius X story. Our third generation family article on page 4 speaks for itself. Something ‘special’ is going on here. You can see it when students encounter difficult situations and are struggling, and they in turn are helped by caring faculty and staff. You can see it when the Foundation and supporting parishes make every effort through scholarships and financial assistance to help families provide their son or daughter with a Pius education. A parent of an alumnus recently told me, “the faith and knowledge of my children’s Catholic education is priceless. I personally could not have allowed them the privilege of this Catholic education both emotionally and financially without the support of the entire staff.” We hear many stories of how teachers have impacted their Update on the children and “turned their lives around.” Pius X Endowment Dan Elsener ’73 reflected on the tremendous impact the Catholic church has all over the world by way of The endowment funds for Pius X continue to grow charitable works, healthcare, and education when he and be of great assistance to Pius X High School’s received his Outstanding Alumni award last August. financial budget. Kyle VerMaas Memorial Scholarship Established by Sophia Werning

Family members, colleagues of Lisa and Randy VerMaas, and friends of Kyle Joseph VerMaas ’12 are honoring his life by establishing an endowed scholarship in his memory. The merit-based scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating Pius X senior having a GPA of 3.5 or above, and planning to attend a 4-year college or university to pursue a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) field of study. Kyle was born October 14, 1993, to Randy and Lisa (Lierz ‘82) VerMaas. He has one brother, Connor ‘13. Kyle attended St. Peter School in Lincoln, and graduated from Pius X in 2012. He loved to read, and his favorite subjects were math and science. While at Pius X, he would challenge himself by taking Advanced Placement classes, and his favorite teachers were the ones who would push him to excel. “Both Kyle and Connor felt that Pius X gave them an excellent education and prepared them well for college,” Lisa says. During high school, Kyle also was inspired to become an organ donor by his fellow classmate, Kathryn Slattery ’12, who was awaiting and ultimately received a life-saving heart and liver transplant (see page 28). Kyle passed away following a brief illness on March 16, 2014. At the time of his death, Kyle was a second-year Biological Systems Engineering student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), where he was on the Dean’s List. Kyle loved the engineering program and dreamed of one day developing new bioprosthetics and traveling the world. He had recently been accepted into a program to complete a minor in Spanish by attending a study abroad experience in Toledo, Spain. “Kyle was mischievous and loved to have a good time,” his mother Lisa shares. “He was fiercely loyal to his family and friends—and he had many.” An avid athlete and outdoorsman, Kyle loved to hunt deer, fish with his father and brother, water ski, wakeboard, play pickup basketball, work out at the gym, and spend time with those who meant most to him. He also was a member of the Newman Center at UNL, where he attended Mass.

“Kyle was not perfect, but he tried hard to always do better,” Lisa reflects. “His Catholic faith kept him grounded.” Prior to his passing, Kyle had shared with his mother that he had attended churches of other faiths and knew that he would always be a practicing Catholic, and thanked his parents for the gift of his Catholic education. “Kyle would be honored to have a scholarship in his name to help others like him attain a higher education,” Lisa says. “We are proud to be able to offer a scholarship in Kyle’s name that might give a bright, ambitious student some assistance in achieving his or her dreams.” Assisting in establishing the endowed scholarship are friends and colleagues of Lisa and Randy VerMaas from Inpatient

Physician Associates in Lincoln, and Cardiac Services at Bryan LGH Hospital. If you would like donate to this scholarship or another existing scholarship, or establish a new endowed scholarship or endowed fund, please contact Michelle Birkel at the Pius X Foundation at 402.488.1046. ThunderBOLT Fun Run Endowment Established by Sophia Werning

After only three years of existence, the Pius X ThunderBOLT Fun Run has raised enough funds from sponsorships and event participation to establish a $10,000 endowment to benefit the high school’s programs and clubs. The new ThunderBOLT Fun Run Endowment will provide special funding to a Pius X academic department or one of the numerous school-sponsored clubs or activities. To apply for this grant – which will be distributed annually – a department or club/activity leader is asked to write a short essay describing their purpose or activity, how the funds will be used, and how the award will impact Pius X and its students. The first grant awarded will be in the amount of $500. The idea of a ThunderBOLT Fun Run began in 2010, with the first Alumni and Friends of Pius X Family Fun Run taking place on August 27, 2011. With the first run being held around the Pius X neighborhood, the event was moved the following year to Holmes Lake Park. The Fun Run has since become an annual event under the name of the ThunderBOLT Fun Run. Including both a 1 mile run/walk and a 5K, the ThunderBOLT Fun Run is a family friendly event which has continued to grow with alumni, parents, students, children and friends of Pius X of all ages and skill levels participating.

Top: The 1 mile fun run/walk in 2011 kicked-off what has become a yearly tradition for many alumni and Pius X family members. Bottom: Founding committee members pictured in 2013 with Theo the Thunderbolt (center) included Bob Duden ’83, Kristin (Edwards) Heath ’91, Lori (Lieb) Morin ’96, Kara Foster ’88, and Shawna (Arroyo) Schroer ’96.

Founding members of the ThunderBOLT Fun Run committee involved in the establishment of this endowment include: Pius X Alumni Director Kristin (Edwards) Heath ’91, Bob Duden ’83, Kara Foster ’88, Lori (Lieb) Morin ’96, and Shawna (Arroyo) Schroer ’96. “The ThunderBOLT Fun Run committee is pleased to establish

this endowment and give back to the clubs, activities, faculty, staff, and students of Pius X High School,” Heath says. The 4th Annual ThunderBOLT Fun Run will be held the morning of August 2, 2014 at Holmes Lake Park. Alumni Basketball Tournament Celebrates 10 Years of Fun and Friendly Competition by Kristin Heath, Director of Alumni

March Madness ~ Thunderbolt Style celebrated its 10th anniversary as the Pius X Alumni Basketball Tournament was held March 21-22, 2014. The annual event saw an amazing turn out with more than 300 alumni players being supported and cheered on by fellow alumni, friends and family. Almost every class year from 1983-2013 was represented with 38 teams competing. With four games playing at a time in the old and new gyms, fun was had by all. After the final games, the teams and their families headed to Dino’s Eastside Bar & Grille for more catching up with their classmates. The basketball tournament is not only a gathering of local alumni. Several alumni travel from out-of-state. John Herrod ’92 currently lives in New Orleans and has participated in the tournament every year for the last 10 years. The annual Alumni Basketball tournament is a great way to stay connected with classmates and give back to Pius X. The funds raised by the tournament have supported many Pius X projects over the years, including long-time Pius X teacher and coach Don Kelley and his heart transplant; televisions in the commons for slide shows and daily announcements; the purchase of a shooting machine for the basketball teams; as well as, a yearly donation to the BOLT auction. Thank you to all who participated, volunteered, and cheered on our players. It was another great success, and everyone loved the 10 year anniversary shirts! Congratulations to this year’s winning teams. Aldrich Division: 1986 - Steve Burt, Bob Glenn, Tom Gourlay, Mike Hall, John Korinek, Bill McManus, Pat McManus, and Ken Sedlak. ince Pius X first opened its doors on October 1, 1956, thousands of students have proudly walked our halls, and more than 9,900 have earned diplomas. As the years pass, we are able to claim new alumni whose parents have also shared in our 58 year history. To celebrate this legacy, we are honored to feature graduates of the Class of 2014, who followed in their parent’s footsteps, instilled with values and knowledge from a Catholic education.

Athletic Hall of Fame Established; Inaugural Inductees to be Honored by Sophia Werning

until 10 years after high school graduation. • Coach - Individuals must have coached at Pius X High School for at least 5 years. A coach would be eligible for Hall of Fame induction if he/she has retired from coaching or has reached the age of 60. • Contributor - This category would include teachers, administrators, boosters, fans, or individuals who made a significant contribution to Pius X athletics. • Team - Athletic teams are eligible for the Hall of Fame 10 years from the completion of their athletic season of accomplishment. State Championship title(s) are a requisite, unless waived by the Board/Chair due to extenuating circumstances (historical, emotional, precedent, etc.) The newly established athletic Hall of Fame will honor our student-athletes, coaches, and athletic contributors and supporters, as well as Pius X teams, that have demonstrated significant accomplishment and notable contributions to Pius X’s sports programs.

After enjoying more than five decades of excellence and achievement in high school athletics, Pius X has established a hall of fame to recognize those who have made notable contributions to its sports programs. The announcement and opening of nominations for the Pius X Athletic Hall of Fame was released in February via local news media and other communication avenues, including the Pius X Foundation’s e-mail newsletter, E-Connections. The inaugural class of inductees to the Hall of Fame will be honored on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014. The reception will begin with a social hour at 4 p.m., with the presentation of the awards at 5 p.m. in the Pius X Commons. Pius X has a rich history of athletic accomplishment and community support. The Thunderbolts began participating in athletics in 1956 with its first football team. In 1970, Pius paved the way for women’s athletics as the first Lincoln school to offer female sports, starting with a women’s golf team. Today, Pius X students compete in 19 NSAA-sanctioned sports and have won more than 50 state championships in a wide variety of athletics. “Pius X has a very strong athletic tradition, and I’m pleased that we will be able to recognize some of the outstanding individuals that have been a part of that tradition,” notes Pius X Athletic Director

and Head Football Coach Tim Aylward ’69. The purpose of the Pius X High School Hall of Fame is to honor individuals and/ or teams in the following categories: • Athlete - Any high school athlete who participated at Pius X in an NSAA sanctioned sport, and proved to have superior performance. Any such person may not be considered

The Pius X Hall of Fame selection committee received a total of 65 nominations: 44 athletes, 14 teams and 7 coaches. The first induction will be comprised of approximately 10 of these nominees. “The Hall of Fame has been in the planning stages for a while,” Aylward notes. “It will be a great addition to our school to finally make it a reality.” Nominations for the Athletics Hall of Fame may be submitted online at www. piusx.net/foundation/awards.htm at any time. Nominations may also be sent to the Pius X Foundation, 6000 A Street, Lincoln, NE 68510.

Catching Up with Kathryn Slattery ’12 by Sophia Werning

On January 11, 2012, just 17 days before her 18th birthday, Kathryn Slattery ’12 became the first combination heart and liver transplant recipient in the state of Nebraska. Today, more than two years later, Kathryn is living the busy life of a typical young woman: working, studying, and spending time with friends and family in her home town of Lincoln. The road of recovery from the historic surgery, however, has not been easy. Just five months after her transplant surgery, Kathryn was crowned Queen of the Pius X prom, and shortly thereafter, she walked triumphantly across the graduation stage at the Lied Center amidst thunderous applause. Unfortunately, the following July, Kathryn received her first major set-back from her transplant surgery. Ulcers had developed in her stomach, and tests determined she had contracted post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD), a rare form of cancer usually found in transplant recipients. This resulted in the need for chemotherapy treatment. Not long after that, it was then discovered that the cancer had moved to Kathryn’s brain. There were 5 lesions discovered, and Kathryn had to undergo several

more rounds of chemotherapy treatments. Radiation followed, and her doctors decided to also pursue an aggressive stem cell treatment at Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital in New York City. Kathryn’s last treatment was in June of 2013, and today, Kathryn is a cancer survivor. Throughout her post-transplant health trials, she managed to take classes on and off at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln campus. In the months since her recovery, Kathryn’s life is taking on a new direction: She has become the chief baker at her family’s art and culinary business, Art & Soul in Lincoln. She aspires to pursue this vocation further by receiving professional culinary training in the future. In looking back over these last two years, Kathryn reflects: “I’m thankful for my struggle, because without it, I wouldn’t have stumbled across my strength.” She is very grateful to hear that many people are still praying for her. Kathryn also was very moved upon hearing that her classmate since Kindergarten, Kyle VerMaas, who recently passed away, had been inspired to become an organ donor while Kathryn was very ill awaiting a heart and liver transplant. “If I could talk to Kyle, I would tell him how much his donation means to the
