GIRL SCOUT ENGINEERING DAY On Saturday, January 22, Pitt’s Society of Women Engineers will have a Girl Scout Engineering Day from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM in Benedum Hall. This event is designed to inform younger girls in the area about the different types of engineering as well as

to encourage interest in engineering, math, and science. Two Junior Girl Scout Troops consisting of fourth and fifth graders
will take part in the event. By participating, these girl scouts will satisfy their Science in Action Badge. Additionally, a Cadette Troop made up of sixth and seventh graders will be there to act as counselors. By volunteering at an engineering day, the cadettes will be fulfilling a badge requirement. The event will involve the scouts splitting into groups and going to six stations. Each station will have a presentation and activity related to a different engineering discipline. Every half hour each group will move to a different sta-
tion. The activities at each station are as follows: making a prosthetic hand model for Bioengineering, making lip gloss for Chemical Engineering, learning how cell phones and Skype work for Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering, having a pasta bridge contest for Civil Engineering, doing an efficiency activity using a yarn spider web for Industrial Engineering, and designing a new futuristic mode of transportation for Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Engineering. Girl Scout Engineering Day was planned and organized by a Pitt SWE committee consisting of Aimee Pickering, Claire Hoelmer, Ashley Nielson, Taylor Robinson, and Erin Gramling. RECENT EVENTS: SWE EARNS AN A+ AT THE nals with a delicious dinner and some fabulous grahamcracker house building fun! Prizes such as stockings full of candy, SWE T-shirts and gift cards were raffled off.
BLOOD DRIVE SWE, with the help of other Engineering organizations on campus, put on a very successful blood drive on December 6th. According to our contact Dale Ellgass from the Central Blood Bank, of the 36 people who registered to donate, 30 pints of blood were collected. This blood alone could help over 90 patients. A special thanks to Pitt SWE’s Julia Wasas and the Central Blood Bank for their part in organizing this event. by Jana DuMond
