Holiday Party Celebration Written By: Julia Wasas On December 12th Pitt SWE hosted a holiday party. There was hot chocolate, cookies, and more. Our members took a break from finals to enjoy some friendly competition. Members made 3D snowflakes and gingerbread houses. These were then judged to find the best one. Winners went home with prizes but everyone got to enjoy a good time and lots of candy.

SWE RIDDLE Pitt SWE would like to challenge you to a riddle! The first University of Pittsburgh student to email PittSWE@gmail.com with the correct answer will receive a $10 dollar gift certificate as a reward.

Please solve the riddle below. Three mathematicians are applying for a job. There are five hats, three white, two black. They’re lined up, and a hat is placed on each. The first person in line cannot see any hat; the second in line sees only the hat of the person in front of him; the third person sees only the hats of the two people in front of her. The first person to correctly figure out what color hat he has gets the job; you guess wrong and you are killed. Assume these are INTELLIGENT mathematicians, and that they will do the logically correct thing at each stage — if something can be deduced, they will figure it out. After a long pause, the first person, who cannot see any hats, says he knows the color of his hat. What is the color, and how does he know?

The Society of Women Engineers offers scholarship opportunities to all women members. There are a large number of scholarship opportunities and they all have individual requirements. To find a scholarship that applies to you please go to www.swe.org >Scholarship> Find a Scholarship. For non-Freshman members applications are typically accepted from December 1st to February 15th. Freshman applications are typically accepted from March 1 st through May 15th. Pitt SWE urges all of our members to go online and see if they are eligible for any scholarships. The scholarship values range from $1,000 to $10,000, and in the year 2012 SWE awarded scholarships in an amount over $577,000. Both graduate and undergraduate students are eligible. Good luck to all that apply!
