Introduction and Motivation Early LRFD requirements for HP bearing piles were calibrated to established ASD values, which were based on the use of ASTM A36 material. Many state DOTs continue to take an essentially ASD approach to the design of driven piles, continuing to prescribe the use of Fy = 36 ksi for the design of HP bearing piles and/or prescribe greater reduction factors in order to arrive at ‘accepted’ allowable bearing capacities.
