The Department of Art boasts excellent studio facilities and a dedicated faculty, offering ample opportunities for personal artistic and professional growth. You will have the chance to explore your chosen studio area within an environment conducive to skill and stylistic development, while also gaining insights from the study of art history and contemporary art cultures. Moreover, the Department of Art houses the Galleries in Porter Hall, a vital part of the Pittsburg State University Museum of Art. Our galleries host regularly changing exhibitions featuring emerging to mid-career artists from across the country. Accompanying each exhibition is our ongoing visiting artist lecture and workshop program, where contemporary artists share insights and practices related to their work. We encourage you to visit our department and discover how Pittsburg State University can play a significant role in your future.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts program at Pittsburg State offers a comprehensive and well-rounded curriculum designed to foster creative and technical development within both emphasis areas: Studio Practice and Art Education. The components of the curriculum equip students with the tools and experience necessary to succeed in various artistic careers. Our curriculum provides a balance of foundational training, advanced knowledge in chosen areas, art history, professional practices. Coupled with mentoring through studio critiques and exhibition opportunities, consistent interaction with the faculty focuses the student on their artistic growth. Within the program there are a series of stackable certificates that students are awarded as they complete that portion of the program (See Certificate page).
Foundational Courses (39 hours): Students in both emphases begin with foundational courses that build core skills in different media and processes. The core includes two certificates, the Foundational Practice Certificate and the Core Studio Media Certificate, both encompassing 15 hours. Please refer to the page related to certificates
Art History (15 hours): Both emphases require a working knowledge of art history. This provides students with a context and understanding of artistic developments throughout history from pre-history through contemporary art. Completion of the art history courses lead to a certificate in art History.
Advanced Studio Practice (18 hours): To deepen expertise, students choose their area of study at the advanced level. The Department of Art Offers advanced studio courses which can lead to an Advanced Studio Practices Certificate (15 hours). These courses advance the student’s technical, formal, and conceptual aspects of their chosen media.
Professional Practices (14 hours): To prepare students for careers in the art world or teaching art, our program includes professional practices courses specific to their chosen career path.
Studio Practices Emphasis Professional Practices coursework covers the business side of the art world, writing for artists, as well as presentation and gallery practices. Completion of the Professional Practices (Studio) coursework leads to the certificate in this area (14 hours).
