AROUND THE AROUND THE NHL NHL OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN Carolina’s Eric Staal and Detroit’s Nicklas Lidstrom were chosen as the team captains for the NHL All-Star Game on Jan. 30 in Raleigh, N.C. All of the All-Stars voted for the two captains, Eric Staal Nicklas Lidstrom who will then pick their squads in an All-Star draft. Lidstrom, who is 40-years old, leads all defenseman in scoring with 42 points in 45 games. “With all of the great players participating, it’s a great honor to be selected as a captain for this year’s All-Star Game,” Lidstrom told NHL.com. “I’m really looking forward to all of the weekend’s events and I’m very excited to be a part of the draft that decides the rosters of the two teams.” Staal, who will be playing in front of his hometown crowd, was the MVP of the 2008 All-Star Gamein Atlanta. He has 22 goals on the season and 46 points. His younger brother and Rangers defenseman, Marc, is also an All-Star. Eric admitted Marc was pressuring him to pick him in the draft. “I’m OK with the pressure from him,” Eric told NHL.com. “I’m not worried about him too much.”
HATS OFF, ZDENO In his 892nd NHL game, Boston’s Zdeno Chara scored his first-career hat trick in the Bruins’ 7-0 win over Carolina on Jan. 17. Chara, who is Boston’s captain, is just the fourth Bruins’ defenseman to score three goals in a game, joining an exclusive club with Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque and Glen Wesley. “It’s always nice to say I’ve done it — I’ve had a hat trick,” Chara, who won the Norris Trophy in 2009 as the league’s best defenseman, said after the game. “I did it.” 8

Dallas’ Jamie Langenbrunner and San Jose’s Patrick Marleau each played in their 1,000th-career NHL games on Jan. 17. Langenbrunner scored the game-winning goal in the Star’s 2-1 defeat of Los Angeles, and Marleau also scored a goal in the Sharks’ 4-2 win over Phoenix. In their 1K careers, Langenbrunner has 233 goals while Marleau has lit the lamp 338 times. Langenbrunner, from Cloquet, Minn., became just the 31st American-born player to reach 1,000 games.

RON BURKLE RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for three-plus seasons and established new standards for television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits while winning acclaim as the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations. A consistent post-season threat on the ice, the Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in 2009. Young stars such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal and others have been signed to long-term contracts, ensuring that the team’s core will remain intact. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux always will be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable career came this season in his role as a businessman — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. The new arena puts the exclamation point on Lemieux’s lengthy quest to ensure the Penguins’ long-term future in Pittsburgh and provides his adopted hometown with a spectacular state-of-the-art center for professional and collegiate sports, concerts, family shows and other events. “There were so many people who contributed to this project, including local and state political leaders, local business leaders, NHL officials and, of course, our fans,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse, “but I think it’s safe to say that none of this happens without Mario Lemieux.” Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise, winning praise for off-ice business accomplishments in addition to creating a positive, player-friendly atmosphere on the hockey side. The Penguins have sold out a team-record 186 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Over the summer, the Penguins were named the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations by ESPN The Magazine. Oh, and they won the Stanley Cup in 2009 — the third Cup of Lemieux’s career but his first as an owner. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to the two Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. DAVID MOREHOUSE DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Under his leadership, the Penguins have sold out every game for three straight seasons — the sellout streak was at 166 games entering 2010-11— while leading all U.S.-based NHL teams in local TV ratings last season and setting new standards for website traffic and social media. Morehouse joined the Penguins in December, 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project, following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill, as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He was Senior Advisor for the John Kerry for President campaign in 2004, traveling on the campaign plane and serving as Senator Kerry’s traveling chief of staff. He worked in the Clinton-Gore White House in the 1990s, and was Senior Counselor and Trip Director for Vice President Al Gore from 1999-2001. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres.

RAY SHERO RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, is at the vanguard of the NHL’s new breed of general managers — steeped in family hockey tradition but on the cutting-edge of new technology and modernization in hockey operations, player relations and team management. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. During that time, he has moved boldly to ensure a strong future for the Penguins, signing six key members of the team’s core — Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang — to long-term contracts. Shero built on the team’s already strong foundation by adding key pieces in the 2010 offseason to set the Penguins up for long-term success. With shrewd maneuvering and an aggressive approach during the first day of free agency, he solidified the team’s blue line with the long-term signings of top-rated defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek. Shero was named GM on May 25, 2006 and one of his first acts was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. In his first season, 2006-07, Shero led his team to its first playoff berth since 2001 and a 47-point improvement in the standings — the fourth-largest improvement from one season to the next in NHL history. Building on that success, the Penguins topped 100 points for the second straight season in 2007-08, winning their first division title since 1998 and advancing to the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to Detroit. After a rocky start in 2008-09, the Penguins rallied when Bylsma was named head coach in February, finishing 18-3-4 to earn a playoff berth and then defeating Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina and Detroit en route to the Stanley Cup. Along the way, they twice overcame 2-0 deficits in games (against Washington and Detroit), won all four seriesclinching games on the road and won two Game Sevens on the road — including the 2-1 thriller at Detroit for the Cup. Ray’s father, Fred, had won two Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975. The Sheros are one of the few father-son tandems to appear on the Cup. The late Fred Shero also was a coach and general manager with the New York Rangers. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, twice serving as team captain, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospects development. Botterill’s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.659) in team history, and is tied with Bowman for most postseason victories (23) and series victories (5). He also became the eighth-fastest head coach in NHL history to hit the 50-win mark (78 games). All-time under Bylsma, the Penguins boast a 65-31-11 regular-season record; 35-13-5 home record; 31-17-6 road mark; 40-3-3 when leading after two periods; 42-1-1 when scoring four or more goals; and 43-9-6 when scoring first. In 2009-10 the Grand Haven, Mich. native completed his first full NHL season behind the bench for Pittsburgh, leading the club to a 47-28-7 record for 101 points — breaking 100 points for the sixth time in franchise history and for the third time in the last four years — finishing only two points behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division title. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

TONY GRANATO TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.
TODD REIRDEN TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

GILLES M GILLES MELOCHE ELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. GAME N NOTES OTES THE SERIES Tonight marks the third meeting of the season between the Penguins and New York Islanders, with each team having won at home. Pittsburgh earned a 3-2 overtime victory over the Islanders on Oct. 15 thanks to Alex Goligoski’s goal at 1:51 on the power play with Milan Jurcina in the penalty box. . . The Islanders took a 2-1 shootout victory over

Each of the last three games between the teams has gone beyond regulation. . . Chris Kunitz had goals in three straight games and six goals in his last seven games before the Penguins visited New Jersey last Thursday. . . Jordan Staal and Tyler Kennedy each took a three-game scoring streak into the game against New Jersey. . . In their first four games back together, longtime linemates Staal, Kennedy and Matt Cooke had combined for 13 points. . . Chris Conner beat Joey MacDonald on a penalty shot in the win over Detroit, ending the Penguins’ penalty shot drought at 12 misses. MIKE L MIKE LANGE ANGE One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange enters his 35th season with the Penguins and will handle radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.
PHIL BOURQUE PHIL BOURQUE Two-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Bourque begins his seventh season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75+89) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88+111) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for FSN Pittsburgh’s coverage of Penguins hockey.
BOB GR ROVE OVE After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his sixth season as full-time host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or Icetime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts “Heineken Hockey Hour” and “Bob Grove’s Hot Stove” on Penguins Radio at 105.9-HD 2.

COMMUNITY UPDATE COMMUNITY UPDATE 2010-11 PENS & PINS CHARITY BOWLING SHIRT AUCTION The Pittsburgh Penguins Wives Association hosted their third annual Pens & Pins Charity Bowling Tournament for the benefit of Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater PA and Southern WV and once again, it was a huge success. Not only did the participants have a great time bowling with their 2010-11 Penguins team, but through their support, they also helped raise money to fulfill wishes of Make-A-Wish children in our local area. The tournament featured Penguins players serving as celebrity team captains for each competing bowling team. Each player signed the bowling shirt that he wore that evening, as well as a team signed bowling shirt and team signed bowling pin. Fans that were not able to take part in the fun at Pens & Pins will be able to bid on those unique prizes. All proceeds from this online auction will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater PA and Southern WV. The auction will run from Wednesday, January 26 until noon on Wednesday, February 9. With Jordan Staal being sidelined by an injury, an opportunity opened for Letestu, 25, to add some depth to the center position for the Penguins coming into training camp. The rookie forward seized it. “Coming into camp, [Letestu] had a strong chance to make the next step and prove that he could play at a consistent level,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “Jordan not being with us for camp and for the start of the season really opened up an opportunity for Mark, which he seized, especially early on in a situation where we’re looking for some depth at the center position for some possible offense on that position and on the power play as well. He was able to step in and be that.” He had posted impressive offensive numbers with WB/S, especially in his last two campaigns. Over his three seasons with the team, Letestu scored 51 goals and 134 points over 191 career games played. Letestu credits the length of time he spent in the organization to making him into a complete player. “They allowed me three years in the minors to develop, and here still, trying to make me a better hockey player,” he said. “Definitely the organization and the coaches and the people involved have done a tremendous amount for my career. . . I’ve only known one organization, I’ve only known

When we look at where our other players are at, we need these players to come up into our organization.” Letestu is continuing to produce offensively in his rookie season with the Penguins, ranking 10th in rookie scoring with his nine goals and 19 points through 47 games. He’s worked to improve all aspects of his game, and it’s paying off dividends. The center has been extremely strong off the draw for the Penguins this season, with his 53.7-percent success rate ranking second on the team behind Sidney Crosby. But at 5-foot-10 and 195 pounds, Letestu is one of the smaller players in the league. He knows he can constantly improve his strength and speed. “I think you’re always trying to get stronger,” he said. “I think being a little smaller, some of the bigger defenseman — especially in our division — it can wear

on you. So my conditioning is something I want to keep hammering on. My footspeed is always something that’s going to hold me back, so I’ve got to keep working on that.” While he knows he still has plenty of work ahead, Letestu couldn’t be happier to have signed an extension. “It’s pretty awesome,” Letestu said with a big smile. “Being undrafted and kind of a quick turnaround. It’s been a good ride, I’ve enjoyed every stop and this is just another step. There’ll be more after this, and hopefully I play my way into being wanted for another one. . . This organization has been good to me, and it’s time to be good back and give them some more years of solid play.”

TAG-A-KID In the event a parent and child might be separated at a CONSOL Energy Center event, parents can register their child with the Tag-A-Kid program. A wristband with the parent’s seat location and contact number will be given to the child. Registration is available at the Guest Services office located outside section 104.
VIDEO CAMERAS Use of video or audio recording equipment is strictly prohibited. CONSOL Energy Center reserves the right to confiscate any tape or film and remove the patron from the building.
WHEELCHAIRS A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. If a wheelchair is needed for the duration of the event, guests must supply their own wheelchairs. Wheelchairs cannot be reserved in advance. On Saturday, October 16, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Pee Wee age group (age 11 - 12) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarter-final heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

In its first few months, CONSOL Energy Center also hosted such acts as Lady Gaga and The Eagles; was home to the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase with Robert Morris; and featured multiple NCAA Division I basketball games, including the “City Game” between Pitt and Duquesne and the Big East/SEC Challenge. In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years. A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others. The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

What was it like winning two NCAA national championships with Boston College? Both times it was obviously a very memorable experience. It’s some of the best sports memories of my life. What’s the most exciting game you’ve ever played in? There was a game last year where we beat Yale 9-7. It was just back and forth the whole game and it was pretty intense. It was pretty high scoring, and we got to go to the Frozen Four [after we won]. What’s been the toughest part about transitioning to the professional level? The hardest part is that there’s twice as many games. That’s a big difference. At this point right now, I’ve already played as many games as I did in a regular season in college. It’s a little different preparing for 3-4 games a week instead of just two games. As far on the ice, you have harder games to play. Guys are a lot stronger, faster and more physical. Guys don’t make many mistakes on the other team, so they’re harder to play against.

How would you describe your playing style? I consider myself a two-way defenseman. The foundation of my game is being a solid defensive zone guy. Anytime I think I can create offense by jumping up in the play and supporting the rush, or if I get an opportunity on the power play, I move pucks well and have a pretty good shot.

WHATâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S HAPPENING DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAMS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY With the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and Dickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sporting Goods over the last three years the Penguins have provided over 2,200 sets of equipment free to local youth ages 4 to 7. This year, four girls-only programs will operate along side of our standard co-ed Little Penguins program. OPEN PRACTICE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation presented the 2010 Pittsburgh Penguins Open Hockey Practice on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the brand new CONSOL Energy Center. The event offered a rare opportunity for over 10,000 school students in grades one through eight from across Allegheny County to see the Pittsburgh Penguins at work. Students were entertained leading up to the start of practice with informational videos about behind-thescenes aspects of the team/facility, as well as educational elements related to the game (geography, math, etc.) each student received an activity book as a takeaway.
WELLNESS TRAINING K.A.M.P. AT UPMC SOUTHSIDE Presented by UPMC Sports Medicine and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. Young hockey players were divided into groups and performed a rotation of 10-minute drills, while UPMC Sports Medicine professionals provided assessments. While the athletes trained, their parents received lectures on nutrition, concussions and sports injuries in general. Over 150 athletes and parents attended the event.

CONCUSSION PROGRAM The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, in conjunction with UPMC Sports Medicine, are prepared to announce a comprehensive program for baseline testing and concussion education for all youth sports beginning at the earliest possible ages.
PENGUINS FOUNDATION CHARITY ASSIST RAFFLE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Penguins Foundation are pleased to host the Penguins Foundation Charity ASSIST Raffle, raising money for a variety of local charities in the western Pennsylvania area. Look for ticket sellers in their red aprons at every home game. The minimum prize each game is $2,000!
NEW SPORTS INITIATIVES — COMING IN 2011 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES In its efforts to fight the sedentary tendencies of America’s youth, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is excited to offer outdoor programs to promote fun and organized physical activity. The program, to be revealed in January, is designed to take advantage of the growing popularity of hockey in the tri-state area by affording young players access to existing facilities and newly constructed outdoor multi-use athletic facilities. These programs provide safe areas to play games under the supervision of established organizations. SCHOOL PROGRAMS • FIRST STRIDE In the ultimate Field Trip, participating schools will be provided with a Penguins-themed hockey experience: Students will be transported to and from a local ice arena, outfitted in full hockey equipment and learn fundamental hockey skills. The program will conclude with each child scoring their first goal! • GYM CLASS FOR A DAY This program is designed for 4th and 5th grade physical education classes and will provide basic skills and game instruction. Gym Class for a Day will transform your school gymnasium or parking lot into a dek/ball hockey rink. The Penguins will provide equipment for an ongoing P.E. Hockey Program. Penguins staff will be on hand to assist P.E. teachers in demonstrating and administering basic hockey skills and games. Each student will be provided a hockey ball and Penguins t-shirt to take home and continue practicing their skills.

THE PENGUINS THE PENGUINS GAME GAME VAULT VAULT ĆŤÄ Ä&#x2C6;Ä&#x152;ĆŤÄ&#x201A;Ä&#x20AC;Ä&#x20AC;Ä&#x2021;ĆŤÄ&#x2018;ĆŤ ĆŤÄ&#x2021;Ä&#x152;ĆŤ ĆŤÄ MELLON ARENA First place wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t on the line when the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders met in the penultimate game of the 2005-06 regular season on April 17, 2006. In fact, neither was a playoff berth. But that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop the 17,084 fans in attendance at Mellon Arena from creating an atmosphere that rivaled a Stanley Cup Final contest despite the fact that the home team had long been eliminated from postseason contention. While the game didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean anything in terms of the standings, it was far from meaningless to the rabid t-shirt waving crowd that came to help cheer 19-year-old rookie Sidney Crosby to get the Sidney Crosby three points he needed to become the youngest player in National Hockey League history to reach the 100-point plateau in a single season. Crosby, who entered the night with 97 points, didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait long to begin his chase towards the century mark. Just 1:04 into the game Ryan Whitney sprung Crosby and Andy Hilbert on a two-on-one. Skating the puck down the near wall, Crosby lifted a perfect saucer pass over the defender and onto the blade of Hilbert, who one-timed a shot across his body behind Garth Snow to open the scoring. Ryan Malone gave the Penguins a 2-0 lead midway through the ďŹ rst period with his 20th goal of the season and the Islanders Miroslav Satan then cut that lead to 2-1 a couple minutes into the second period. Later in the second, Crosby helped restore Pittsburghâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s two-goal advantage when he picked up point No. 99 off a nifty stickhandling play on an odd-man rush. After playing give-and-go with Colby Armstrong, Crosby turned the puck over to his backhand and slid a pass just beyond a New York defender to a wide-open Tomas Surovy, who slammed the biscuit home to put the Penguins up 3-1. With the crowd in a frenzy sensing that history could now happen at any moment, Crosby made sure they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to wait long to get what they came to see. Just a mere 25 seconds after the Surovy goal, and with New Yorkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Jason Blake in the penalty box serving a major penalty for charging, Crosby hit triple digits. Following a faceoff win just outside the New York zone, Crosby led the attack over the blue line, before quickly dishing a pass cross-ice to Malone at the top of the near circle. Malone wound up and unleashed an overpowering slap shot that beat Snow to the short side â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and more importantly gave Crosby point No. 100. Joe Melichar and Ryan Whitney added goals in the third period to produce the 6-1 ďŹ nal, but after the game, all the talk centered on Crosby. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One hundred points? At 18?â&#x20AC;? Armstrong said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s doing something most people canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t imagine or dream of.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a great accomplishment, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m deďŹ nitely proud of it,â&#x20AC;? Crosby said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;By no means, coming into the season, did I think about getting 100 points. But as it became near, it was something I thought would be a nice feat, and I tried to have the best ďŹ nish to the season â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and have no regrets.â&#x20AC;?

OUTSIDE THE OUTSIDE THE BOX BOX A recent encounter with the Detroit Red Wings at the CONSOL Energy Center was fairly representative of how things have been going for the Penguins this season when it comes to penalties. Pittsburgh drew five penalties to Detroit’s three. The Red Wings had four power-play opportunities to the Penguins’ one (Pittsburgh was also awarded a penalty shot). And Detroit’s power play went 0-for-4. “I don’t think it’s a major issue but you want to be going to the penalty box less than the other team and give your team the best chance of winning the man-advantage situation,” forward Matt Cooke said. That hasn’t happened often this season. The Penguins took the ice against Detroit back on Jan. 18 ranked No. 30 in the NHL (dead last) in penalty minutes per game at 16.1. They were also No. 30 in total penalties (280) and times shorthanded (194) and No. 28 in major penalties (43; by comparison the Red Wings had eight of those at the time). A penalty-killing unit that ranked No. 1 in the NHL (at 87.6 percent) and was bolstered by the recent return to the ice of forward Jordan Staal has helped the Penguins work around what had become a parade to the penalty box this season. Still, they’d like to test their penalty-killing prowess a little less frequently. “We’re the most penalized team in the league,” forward Max Talbot said. “We need to be better at this. “We need to work harder and play better and maybe pay attention to details a little better, too.” It’s not the plethora of fighting majors that had the Penguins feeling a little boxed in. Their willingness to stick up for their stars and for one another is a much-appreciated characteristic on what has been a winning team. would like to tighten up a bit in terms of how they’ve been going about their business. “There are obviously some times that we’re undisciplined,” Talbot said. “We have a lot of majors, which I think is a good thing for us; it means we play together. But at the same time there are some times where we’re still going for the big hit, where we’re getting our stick high or things like there. There are a lot of penalties, I think, we could avoid. “It’s a good thing we have good penalty killing. We wouldn’t be that high in the standings if we didn’t have it. But there are some times when you need to be more aware of where your stick is, or, that if a guy has his back to you, you can’t really finish him. There’s some stuff like that [the Penguins need to address].” That “stuff” has bitten the Penguins on occasion. A Jan. 10 home game against Boston was one of those times, as a couple of late penalties against the Penguins (boarding on defenseman Brooks Orpik at 14:39 of the third period and holding on Staal at 17:52) helped conspired to turn a 2-0 lead into a head-scratching, 4-2 loss.

That was a rare instance when the penalty killing failed to deliver when needed. “When you take a penalty you have trust and faith that we’re going to kill it off, but I don’t think there should be any kind of mindset to go out and take liberties,” Cooke said. “Sometimes, there’s confusion as to what a penalty is and what is not. Definitely some of them are avoidable, that’s for sure.” That trust in the penalty-killing unit remains well founded. Detroit’s 0-for-4 with the man advantage extended the Penguins’ most recent stretch of dominance in keeping opponents’ power plays at bay to 26 kills in the Pens’ last 28 man-down situations. And the Boston game proved to be just the second this season in which the Penguins had allowed a pair of power-play goals. Still, when things such as that happen it reminds everyone that there’s still work to be done as it relates to making penalty killing a less-called-upon facet of the Penguins’ overall game. “It’s good that it’s happening now,” Talbot said. “We can learn from it.”

The Penguins promoted Chris Conner from their Wilkes-Barre/Scranton farm club this past Nov. 10. They proceeded to go on a 22-5-3 run, including 12 straight wins. The 5-foot-8, 180-pound winger was happy to participate. Conner just wasn’t sure if he should take credit. “We got really hot when I first came here, so that helped out,” Conner said. Are you responsible? “No, no, no. I just came at the right time. I’m just doing whatever I can do to help the team win. The team was just playing really well when I first got here.” Modesty or honesty? One thing’s certain: Conner has done his part. Conner tallied six goals and four assists in his first 30 NHL games this season while providing the Penguins with energy that goes far beyond statistics. Conner got the opportunity to directly influence a victory when Detroit visited CONSOL Energy Center on Jan. 18. He netted a penalty shot that turned out to be the game-winning goal. Conner burst in alone on goaltender Joey MacDonald when Red Wings veteran Kris Draper hooked him from behind, preventing his shot. So the referees gave Conner a do-over. Conner didn’t freelance once he corralled the puck at the center dot: “I had a game plan before I went in. I stick to that one move. It’s been successful before.” Conner’s success story is quite remarkable. When the Penguins recalled him from the minors, most assumed his stay would be temporary. Conner turned pro in 2006 after playing college hockey at Michigan Tech; his longest NHL stint so far was 38 games with Dallas in 2008-09. But Conner has stayed in Pittsburgh, and played, often seeing third-line duty with Mark Letestu and Tyler Kennedy but more recently — vs. Detroit, for example — with Max Talbot and Mike Rupp. Conner averaged almost 12 minutes of ice time through his first 30 games. “I try not to think about it,” Conner said of his once-tenuous status. “I just want to go out and play my game and do whatever I can to help the team be successful.” So far, so good, as Conner’s won-lost record indicates. Conner had found a comfort zone with Letestu and Kennedy, but switching lines doesn’t rattle him. “I don’t mind,” said the Michigan native. “Whatever they think is best works for me. I can’t change my game no matter who I’m playing with, so that’s what I’ve got to concentrate on. I have to use my speed no matter who I’m playing with.” The Penguins had to make a major adjustment in early January when captain Sidney Crosby went down with a concussion. The Penguins’ lost their first three games without Crosby but rallied to win the next three, including the triumph against Detroit. “We’re just playing simple hockey,” Conner said. “Sticking to the system. We emphasize getting pucks to the net and getting bodies there, and it’s paying off.” Conner is enjoying his stint in Pittsburgh. It’s a star-studded crew, to be sure, but a tight dressing room, too: “The guys on the team are great. It’s pretty easy coming from [WilkesBarre/Scranton] and fitting in up here. It’s been good so far.”
